9:00 PM
Hey, we have just described some of the worst of 'merican cuisine. You should be feeling right good about baked beans for breakfast about now.

@SAJ14SAJ Well, I think it's a perfectly representative dish from the ‘fine’ cuisine known as Campbell's.

@SAJ14SAJ- everyone is talking about "ramps". Wikipedia suggests it's an allium. Are they common up there?

somewhat like a leek, no?

@Sobachatina I think they are, but I am not really into them.

@Sobachatina Wait, I thought ramps were things skateboarders used?

9:00 PM
@derobert No- that's an inclined plane.

Its about half way between a spring onion and a leek, size wise, but very perishable, and generally only avilable in season.

@Sobachatina no, inclined planes aren't curved

Kenji Alt of serious eats is into them, I think he had an article a couple of days ago.

@Sobachatina at least in Euclidean geometry.

Screws are curved, and they are just a round inclined plane.

9:02 PM
@SAJ14SAJ They are curved around the plane that isn't inclined. :)
@derobert So- they're more like a disinclined plane?

@Sobachatina Could be. As long as we keep the mathematicians away.

bluergh

@SAJ14SAJ Yeah- that's the most recent one that made me think about them.

I hate fritatta
and omelettes

9:05 PM
I hadn't heard of them until this season.

I have no strong feelings, although my favorite way to eat eggs is scrambled.

poached
is the way to go
poached egg, steamed spinach, crumpet, hollandaise
maybe even some american bacon
got yerself a brunch

I cannot go with the poached.
I don't like my eggs runny. I want them completely cooked.
And I don't see why a strumpet is needed for brunch! :-)

Dude, eggs have to be runny
don't be a girl

Nope, don't want runny eggs. That is gender-neutral good taste!

9:09 PM
Rubbery eggs are the opposite of good taste

Cooked doesn't mean rubbery, when done correctly.

Bah- I'll take my eggs from barely cooked sous vide to solidly fried.
It depends whether I have toast on hand to mop up the yolk.

People keep posting links to Ramsey's scrambled egg method, and it sounds nasty to me.

Don't want a fried egg sandwich dumping yolk all over me when I'm driving to work either.

bacon and fried egg sandwich (with ketchup), now you're talking

9:10 PM
@ElendilTheTall Yep.

No ketchup on an egg and bacon sandwich!

@SAJ14SAJ your credibility is descending rapidly, my friend

@ElendilTheTall :-)

free-fall...

Ketchup definitely goes with eggs

9:11 PM
I am not southern enough for the ketchup on egg thing.

I'm not sure if I'd put it on an egg & bacon sandwich

@derobert try it
turn to the red side

Huevos rancheros!!!!

Well, first, I'd have to have an egg and bacon sandwich. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had one.
Is this properly on bread, or a (American-style) biscuit?

bread
preferably good crusty hand cut bread
thick enough to wedge a door with
plenty of butter

9:12 PM
I like it on whole wheat bread, or bread, but a biscuit is very very popular. Our fast food industry has kind of made the biscuit a standard.

grilled bacon
fried egg with runny yolk
ketchup
then book a coronary exam

ah, you all with your free healthcare...

I think there is a reason Sybil will not let Commander Vimes have pork dripping sandwiches any more, when he is not on vacation.

@derobert damn straight
all so we can enjoy our bacon sarnies
right, time for bed

"Sarnie"? That is a new one to me.

9:14 PM
g'night all

Night, @ElendilTheTall

@ElendilTheTall night.

That breakfast sounds like so much work

@SAJ14SAJ your vocabulary is so limited
@derobert that's lunch, man

First, you've got to make some good crusty bread.

9:15 PM
@derobert we can buy it here
our supermarket bread isn't like loft insulation

You could buy it here too, but that'd be cheating.

@derobert Pepperige Farms hearty white makes a decent breakfast sandwich.

@ElendilTheTall hmmm fiberglass bread.

@ElendilTheTall Off to be with ye now!

Then you have to make bacon and and egg, ok, that's not hard
Then you have to book with a cardiologist...

9:17 PM
You can skip that last part if you are brave.

Indeed. BTW, how good are cats at guarding against birds?

@derobert They live inside. So they watch them on Kitty Television with great interest, but have little practical experience.

I've planted some strawberries in a box on the deck, and—assuming they grow at all—I need a way to keep them away.

@derobert Screening?
Chair and shotgun?

I'm in the suburbs, not a rural area, so shotgun is out. (Just barely. It still is VA.)

9:20 PM
If you were in Texas, I think it would be required
The thing is, even if you get a cat, she might not stay by the strawberries. They are fickle that way.

True, but would bird to chase attract him/her?
And I guess, if the cat is stuck on the deck, can't go too far.

Birds are generally afraid of cats, yes. Slugs are not.

I'm hoping the slugs won't make it up on to the deck.

Also beetles. And deer.
But perhaps you don't have Carolina Deck-Climbing Deer there?

And if the slugs do make it up, I know how to take care of them—they absolutely love salt.

9:23 PM
And beer.

deck-climbing deer? I hope not. Its 10 ft up...

The CDCD is very tenacious. Its an invasive species up here, of course.

I think if those show, we have animal control :-P

You would also have to make sure your cat doesn't jump. They are wonderful creatures, but not always the most analytical decision making process.

Well, assumably it'd learn before the 9th jump?

9:25 PM
Also, once you adopt the cat you are on the hook for 10 to 20 years.... so don't do it just for strawberries :-)
@derobert Sadly, they don't all get issued the full 9.

But then you'd be off the hook long before the 10–20 :-P

But you would be very sad.

Yes. Because then the birds would get the berries.

arrgggh

I hope you realize I'm not serious here!

9:26 PM
I know.
But I was serious about the CDCD... like kudzu, when they are invasive, they cause huge environmental damage.

I've not heard of the CDCD. Sounds annoying.
... and also sounds like cause for a shotgun, if only the neighbors weren't 20ft away

Pretty much only to deck gardners. They are not recreational climbers.

I guess you just what, mount spike strips on the deck posts?

I never thought about that.

"CLIMB THIS YOU #*!@#* DEER!"

9:28 PM
They are some sort of relative to the reindeer, so I am not sure how much actual traction they need.

Well, spike strips should increase traction....

I imagine they would.

And if they're persistent enough, I guess you get venison for dinner.

I have not read any articles saying that they CDCD make good venison, though. They are probably tough and stringy.

Hmmm, wonder if that means they'd be good in long-cooked stew?
I've got 4 slow cookers at the moment...

9:31 PM
Why so many?

One I need to get rid of. The other three are to make obscenely large batches of chili

Can a batch of chili be "obscenely large" or is that just slang for "almost enough"?
How do you like to make your chili?

LOL, well, when frozen it can be lunch for a few months. Easily 4 gallons of chili.
How do I like it? Hmm. Spicy.
With beans and meat

What about the great religious chili questions? Ground or cubed? Beans or no? Tomato or no?
I am either, no, yes.

I usually make ground (easier). Yes to beans. Yes to tomato.
I use more beans than meat.

9:34 PM
Ground is defnitely a patience saver.
Now that I think about it, I haven't made chili in a long, long time.
I sort of started making chili mac for quick dinner in the fridge.
I love some chili mac.

I use a 12qt pressure cooker to make beans, and use them all up
I used to use canned beans, but dried are better and, above all, so much lighter!

When carrying them home, that is for sure. Since i am single with no wife to tell me it is a waste, I let Peapod deliver all my heavy groceries.

And I used to only have a manual can opener.

Lug that 25 lb bag of cat litter! I only ordered four!

Opening 5 cans of beans + 3 cans of tomatoes per pot was not fun.
Or maybe it was 6 cans of beans...

9:36 PM
I have never had an electric can opener. Once I dscovered they aren't all as bad as the original cheap kind--I have an Oxo now--I don't feel the need for an electric.
Where did you squeeze in the meat and sauce and chili and onion and stuff?

They're 6qt slow cookers, it just barely fits
as in, its almost overflowing. But not quite!
(I drained and rinsed the canned beans, so they loose some of their bulk)

18 quarts? I would just do it in my 18 quart stock pot (no kidding) in the oven then :-)

Well, I season all three differently, so I have some variety

I have a cute little 1 1/2 quart slow cooker. I use it at holidays as a buffet gravy server!

And my biggest stock pot is 12 qt

9:39 PM
There is no One True Chili?

Nope, not one true chili. There are plenty of good chilis

None of them involve tofu in any way, though, I feel confident in saying.

Yep, no tofu.

And chicken chili verde is at the fringe of acceptability to me.

I see chicken chili as a different dish, really.
But its OK. Its just not really like other chili.

9:42 PM
I want to make that.

that looks good

Its like the soul of chili and pig. What could be bad?:-)

Hmmm.... I guess the only thing that could go wrong is you could have guests over, and it turns out they're vegan.
That'd be bad. (Clearly, you'd need to replace the guests)

Hopefully, I am smart enough to find out any halal, kosher, or vegan guests. I don't feed vegans. Everyone else can eat baked ziti :-)

LOL
No, no one should have to suffer through feeding vegans.

9:52 PM
the hardest guests I had for Thanksgiving were celiac non gluten non soy eating people who couldn't have eggs.
We had philadelphia style ice cream for dessert.
And I didn't give them any stuffing.
I did have a cornbread without wheat flour.

@SAJ14SAJ Well, at least suffering from Celiac is a good reason to avoid wheat.

Are you working late today?

Nah, I'm normally here this late. Going home soon.

Ah.
My kitty says "Arooow" which I think means, "get up and pay attention to me".

Oh. I know what else could go wrong with that pork. The cats could beat you to it.
Wonder what cats think of chili peppers

9:57 PM
They are quick. But they are essentially tuned to the sound of a cat food can being opened.
I don't even know if they can taste capscum oil.
