Q: Good site for nutritional info

Anurag UniyalI cook my breakfast from several raw ingredients (about 12) and was trying to come up with caloric and nutritional content for the same, for few ingredients I could get details on Wikipedia, a bit of google brings few other sites, though I am wondering is there a comprehensive listing of most kno...

Q: How do I remove small grounds when using a french press?

onemachWhen I use a french press to brew coffee, there always is some small grounds with the coffee. I have adjust the grinder to make coarse grounds, but this does not help a lot. Can I remove these annoying grounds without a filter?

Q: 'Popcorn' microwave button

msh210My microwave oven has a "POPCORN" button. Its manual reads: Touch this pad when popping popcorn in your microwave oven. The oven's sensor will tell the oven how long to cook depending on the amount of humidity it detects from the popcorn. See page 31 for more information. Page 31 clarifies:...

@jay i'm only teasing, I love you really. I guess.

Is it the picture that did it?

Yeah, unfashionably light jeans are enough to make me switch sides.

Good to know.

@ElendilTheTall Wait, what? Which colour is fashionable these days?
I haven't noticed much of a trend. It was very dark blue a year or two ago.

Darker than those
(I'm joking again jay)

Q: Does black metal vessels cook food more quickly than normal steel?

Anisha Kaulhttp://www.prestigesmartkitchen.com/default/deluxe-hard-anodized-pressure-handi-mini/p-33442-75884410482-cat.html This is made of Aluminum. Does this make any difference to cooking speed as compared to the steel non black cooker?

2:30 PM
\m/

@Mien ?

@rfusca?
\m/ is a sign for metal, the music genre.

oh, ic

And there was just a question posted about "black metal", that's a subgenre :)
Stupid joke, I'm sorry.

ah, you wierdo

See the last star on the right ;)

I suck at jokes.

how true

:D

Jay
@ElendilTheTall these are quite fashionable ill let you know ><!

is metal the only kind of music you listen to?

Jay
she also listens to plastic too corny, CENSORED :D

2:39 PM

How do you strike through?

Jay
lol need to heado ut for class now

you should be able to edit and see the history on that now to check

sneeky
Yes, I saw it on the history
I didn't expect you telling me :p

lol :P

2:45 PM
@mien don#t pay attention to these boring people

my inlaws come in today :(

I like dthe black metal joke.

@rumtscho I find Ratio a really cool book.
I don't know why. It's nothing fancy and nothing I didn't know at all. But still :)

@rfusca why the emoticon?

@Mien ya its neat
@rumtscho don't get along that well

2:46 PM
They must be very happy. New grandparents and all that.
@rfusca They'll probably be too busy with the baby to quarrel.

the exact opposite
new baby will cause many issues to come up

Such as "if our daughter had married the guy we had in mind, he would have made her a more beautiful baby" or what?

@rumtscho lol. That would mean that it's time to move away from the in-laws, I think.

so @Mien needs saving?

It was his parents who lived nearby I think, not his inlaws
@hobodave apparently, she has some freedom when her dragon is asleep. You have to talk to her about a more permanent solution.

2:51 PM
@rumtscho they originally had somebody picked out for her to marry...his nickname was Ogre....
@Sobachatina ya the in-laws are just coming up for a visit

But tell us the gossip @hobodave. How are your last days in the old job?

@rumtscho no, certain religious things and the fact that we won't let our daughter go stay with them for extended trips
@hobo more importantly, hows the worm coming along that steals the rounded transaction pennies from all the financials?

@rfusca you have a holy war within your family? It sounds exciting... in the dangerous sense of exciting.
@rfusca he needs a place with a high transaction volume to make money off it. Maybe he should be working on a different one. Like a backdoor which sends valuable insider info to him.
hello @laura
how was vacation?

hello! it was fantastic :)

@hobodave Yes! Save me!
But the dragon is awake now :(

3:00 PM
@Mien but he lives in a different city during the week?

So... was it decided while I was away that @Kenny was a dragon?

Chained to his server room with three chains only dissolvable with live water?

That's a little too awesome. It might make the fungus and citrus, etc jealous.

@rumtscho Yes, and in weekends as well.
Speaking of the dragon.

@Sobachatina I'll take it.

3:01 PM
@Sobachatina are the eastern/Russian fairy tales known in the west?

Dragons have ponytails?

@KennyRasschaert you take his dragon, and raise what?

What could you possibly raise after taking someone's dragon?
Perhaps you meant "raze"

@Sobachatina I suspect that when a male metalhead dragon wants a day job, he tries to tame his mane a bit, to look friendlier.

@rumtscho Good point.

3:04 PM
@rumtscho who told you he's a metalhead?

I am stereotyping here again, but I just assumed that @Mien 's dragon must be a metalhead dragon.

@rumtscho Some are, I think. I see Baba Yaga around from time to time.

jinx.
@Sobachatina wow, I#ve never seen Baba Yaga personally :P
I meant more the memes like the chained three-headed dragon beside the living water well, the kidnapper dragon who returns every night to the tower where he has locked the princess (but is away during the day), Kaschtschei's live being hidden in a recursive set of implausible vessels, etc.

@rumtscho busy days, but I'm still keeping my old schedule :)
I'm certainly not coming in extra early

@hobodave when do you switch?

3:10 PM
April 16 is my first day at my new job

So in two weeks :) Exciting.

@rumtscho ya, there's definitely a bit of a war

Who's winning?

it's fun because my coworkers are all coming to me and complaining about our boss and how much she sucks

Do they already know you'll quit?

3:13 PM
yes I told them the same day

Q: Durability of Hard Andonised metal (Aluminum)

Anisha Kaulhttp://www.hawkinscookers.com/1.1.5.hawkinsconturaHA.asp They are hard Andonised but haven't specified the metal used in the body, here. http://www.prestigesmartkitchen.com/default/deluxe-hard-anodized-pressure-handi-mini/p-33442-75884410482-cat.html They too are hard Andonised but have used Alu...

@Mien oh, we've already won, they have no 'weapons' in this war :) It has to do with how they want us to raise our kids and they have absolutely no say in the matter. They can make us a bit miserable just from their words, but ultimately its strictly on us.

I see. Well, good luck the coming days then ;)

thanks :)

hobodave has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

3:17 PM
@StackExchange shh
ass

:D

@rfusca ouch. Your lifestyle already incorporates lots of religion: If they insist on more than that, what do they want, that you send your children to grow up in a convent?

@rumtscho lol, not 'more' - different. He's a Lutheran pastor and they want the kids raised strictly Lutheran

So what are the differences between Lutheranism and other Christian views?

Are there that many differences between the two then?

3:21 PM
the one thats likely to come up this visit is baptism
they believe in infant baptism and they believe its a condition of salvation - we don't believe either
most Lutherans wouldn't make an issue out of the differences. My parents are and they don't, but her parents do.

Hi @ElendilTheTall, we're talking about religion again :)

@rfusca we have a similar issue with my mum, in-laws and wife's grandmother

Ah, I thought that infant baptism was the norm, except for one or two teachings - so I would have assumed that you, as a non-teaching-specialized Christian, would continue the tradition of infant baptism.

though they're probably less hardcore than yours

Here, a lot of babies get baptized for the grandparents and to be with the class. It doesn't harm them, so why not.

3:25 PM
because it labels them

I got baptized because my parents' wedding witnesses wanted to be my godparents.

@rumtscho its common, but not to much to label it 'the norm' - especially around here

Labels, really?

I don't care about it, and I don't feel "labeled". It was just a funny ritual.
I remember it, because I was 14 when it happened.

@Mien it has no religious significance to you, it does to us

3:27 PM
@rfusca But does the not-being-baptized have a significance?

So you feel you 'betray' God if you baptize your kids?

I mean, if you want your children to be baptized at some point (I assume that you do), why is it important that it isn't now?

@rumtscho because, to us, baptism is a decision you make for yourself, its not something that is done to you

@rfusca Ah, I see.

@rumtscho :)

3:37 PM
There are a lot of styles of buttercream :-/

@ElendilTheTall they're religious?

@rfusca only in a vague, British, grew-up-with-it kind of way
they probably couldn't tell me why they want her christened besides a few mumbled 'it's just how it should be's
and I've told them before, AFAIC it's up to her to make an informed decision when she's old enough to
I'm sure wife's granny probably thinks her great-granddaughter will burn in hell if she's not christened - what a lovely, moral Christian attitude that is.
But then she's a crotchety old bat
:)

@ElendilTheTall what a lovely, moral family attitude that is

It's the truth
She's an odd woman
sometimes she's lovely
but she has that deeply annoying old-person attitude that her opinion is the only valid one, and how things were done in 'her day' is the only way to do things

I have a kitchen question, if I may.... ;)

3:46 PM
and she has no tact - if she thinks you're wrong she'll tell you
@laura shoot

Does anyone here have experience with Wolfgang Puck knives?

I don't see why you think this is an old-person attitude. I've met young people with it. (And tactless too)

I'm thinking about buying a new knife set, and I found a good deal on a Wolfgang Puck set, but I've never used or inspected them in person

@Laura not i

@Laura not me, but isn't he a celebrity chef?

3:47 PM
how good of a deal?

yes, he is a celebrity chef

I read about knives recently
About the line of a different celebrity chef

@rfusca $80 for a 10-piece set

forget it

And the conclusion was that they were terrible

3:47 PM
A) you don't need 10 knives

seems too low to be quality

@laura why do you want a set at all?

ya, definitely don't need 10 knives

B) if they're that cheap, they're crap
get yourself 1 good sized chef's knife

But also, a good knife doesn't need a celebrity chef to sell it.

3:48 PM
@ElendilTheTall it's not actually 10 knives...the knife block counts as one "piece" and one of the "knives" is a carving fork (which I don't have)

@laura alright, you don't need 8 knives

lol

It is the mediocre knives which use such marketing.

you need 3, max
1 big one, 1 small one, and a serrated one

@Laura you need 3 knives - chef's, paring and bread.

3:49 PM
@rumtscho great minds...

@rumtscho yeah, that's typically what I think. But I'm no knife expert, so I wanted to see if anyone had used these before

i was in the middle of typing that as well lol

haha
good to know you're all in agreement

THE ROOM HAS SPOKEN
:)

thank you, room!

3:49 PM
Bestow upon us your offering

if you're looking for a good deal on knives, I've been really happy with mine and they're not bank breaking

In my case, extend the Photo SE equipment lending library trial to me :D

@laura you are welcome. Now head to the nearest Global store and get yourself a good knife :)

second question: (french-style) chef's knife or santoku knife?
@rfusca what kind do you have?

@Laura this isn't the question, it seems.
The second question should be - soft (German) or hard (Japanese) steel

The form is all up to personal preference, they say.

haha feel free to answer that one, too, @rumtscho :)

@laura at some point you need to find a stockist and try them out

i like the french shape better personally

you need to get one that fits your hand nicely and has a good weight for you
are there any shops in New York?
;)

3:52 PM
@Laura From what I#ve read lately, you should get a Japanese and then sharpen them regularly. This is what knowledgeable people do.

@ElendilTheTall might be a struggle, but I can probably find one or two

@rumtscho <raises hand>

If you know you won't sharpen, German may be better.

haha I like that phrase "this is what knowledgeable people do"

@Laura that knife is well rated, especially for the money. And it beats the pants off my 4 times the price Henckles.

3:54 PM
You can't get a Solingen knife as sharp as a Japanese one, but it seems to take longer for a Solingen to get unusably dull.

cooks illustrated gave it good reviews too
4
Q: Do German or Japanese knives hold their edge longer?

rumtschoI want to buy a chef's knife, but I can't sharpen, and I don't plan to learn it. I will have to send my knives for sharpening, so I obviously prefer this to happen as rarely as possible. I am leaning towards a Solingen style knife, probably a forged Zwilling. But I read in an answer herethat th...

cool, thanks

@rfusca I read a bit more since
It was on the site of a knife afficionado, with lots of reviews of different knives
He confesses that he is a fan of hard steel
And for him, it was obvious that the Japanese are always better - because he never could get the German ones as sharp.
But I doubt that he would ever let his knives get as dull as I do.
I mean, he uses a 10 000 er stone on his knives o.0

ya, my thing is that for most people they're not going to try to split atoms with their knife....there is such a thing as "good enough"
i really, really wanted a global...but $120 vs $25....

I got a Global for £40

3:59 PM
did it 'fall off the back of a truck'?

Had it for nigh on seven years now, sharpens up beautifully

I'm a Shun man

@rfusca if you call Amazon the back of a truck

@ElendilTheTall sometimes man...sometimes
@hobodave ya, shun's are nice
anyway, i'm off to lunch

4:01 PM
I've taken some quite nice water droplet shots

@ElendilTheTall nice

processing now, I'll post them later to bore you all to distraction

seven years ago, the pound was stronger, wasn't it?
@ElendilTheTall can't wait

it was this one, but it's more than twice the price now
no idea why
perhaps the Global factory was hit in the tsunami
@rumtscho sarcasm?

Q: What knives are "required" for a serious home kitchen?

Nathan KoopI consider myself a serious home cook. What knives are essential?

I wish he'd accept that answer some day

4:03 PM
@ElendilTheTall no, straightforward "you promised me a bauble? Give me that bauble! Now! Waahaahaaa!"
Wow.

Q: Winners of Special Weekly Topic Contest: March 13 - April 3, 2012 (Pies, Cakes, Cookies!)

LauraI'm going to be on vacation March 18 - 28, and without internet access for much of that time - which overlaps with what would be three separate weekly contests. In order to keep these running, questions coming in, and all of you eligible for prizes, I'm changing the contest slightly for the next...

@laura thank you! And thank you to StackExchange too.
I didn't expect it.
Actually, I tried to hold back and not flood with multiple questions per topic.
Now I feel somewhat guilty, there probably were other people without a win who asked contest-worthy questions.

@rfusca Totally agree. Well done.

@rfusca when do you consider children to be able to make an informed decision about baptism? 10? 18? Some other age?

@rumtscho 8 years old for us. </data point>

@rumtscho don't feel guilty. It's all done randomly. and the other two winners were people I haven't seen participate in the contests before, which is a good sign (I think - they might've just posted contest-eligible questions by chance).
I'm off to lunch as well. I'll be back in a bit :)

4:21 PM
@rumtscho You should feel very guilty.
As soon as the statute of limitations expires BAM you win again.
And as a moderator too. New users will think you rigged the vote.

@Sobachatina maybe i shouldn't have asked so many questions - I admit that the contest played a role in my decision to make cookies, a cake and a pie.
OK, actually I would have had to make the cake anyway, it was for the semseter brunch. But else, I probably would have cooked/baked other things.

Well... I suppose if you gained weight then I won't complain.

But I made intentionally one long pie lattice question even though I thought it could have been split better, just to avoid contest-eligible inflation.
@Sobachatina I don't think so. I don't know for sure, because I don't have a scale.

@rumtscho It's a good philosophy in life, in general, to not own a scale.

@Sobachatina depends on which scale. People would have to pry my kitchen scale from my cold dead fingers.
But it only goes to 2 kg, I think.

4:27 PM
Not even you are that light. :)

I don#t have a bathroom scale. But my weight seems to stay constant, or at least I fit in my pants I bought 7-8 years ago.

@rumtscho Well, we'll see after all the cookies.

I would have a scale if I was trying to manage my weight. It would have been important to measure myself. Even now, I am thinking of buying a sleep-measuring system to see if I can get to the root of my sleeping problems.
@Sobachatina I didn#t eat the cookies, I gave them as a gift.

Clever, but disappointing. My whole theory goes out the window.

It turned out to be less than a perfect gift, because my friend's wife was on a fast - not eating sweets in an effort to lose her baby kilos

4:30 PM
:)

I also didn't eat the cake, I brought it to brunch here
But my "pie" probably has more calories than the cookies and the cake together.
It is actually a quiche with a flaky crust and a lattice.
It has bacon, cheese, eggs, etc.
I have been eating it exclusively for the last few days.

Nice.
We went rock climbing yesterday for my son's birthday.

And there is still some left. It creates a nice sated feeling. I suspect that a piece of it has more calories than what I usually eat for a meal.

It was an indoor rock climbing wall.

@Sobachatina wow, great

4:33 PM
He scaled all the way to the top several times with a cast on one arm.

They allow kids to rock climbing?

Very impressive.

What?!
I just wanted to ask what the sibling with the broken arm thought of such a birthday party...

They have auto-belay mechanisms. The kids are clipped in- even if/when they fall they fall very very slowly.
His older siblings with whole limbs were too scared to climb to the top. :)

Lol.
Although, he may be a bit too young to be scared, if he is the youngest after baby.

4:36 PM
Maybe- he just turned 6. He is the daredevil of the family though.
Thus the broken arm.

Oh, @Sobachatina I am reading a book in Russian. And a minor character there has your family name.
I keep waiting for him to turn up in a situation requiring a declination.

Really?! That almost never happens in English let alone Russian.

But he seems to be too minor for that.

Too minor for declension? Pity.

It is an English book, translated.

4:37 PM
Harry Potter?
That's the only book I've read with my name in it (as a very minor character)

Фонтани рая, by Arthur Clarke

Interesting- I'll have to check it out.

I've only read the first third, so maybe he will come up more frequently later.

The next book on my list (after the Agile dev book for the work book club) is the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson.

Generally, I would say that every Arthur Clarke book is worth checking out, even if there isn't a special reason.

4:38 PM
I've heard a lot of good things about it if you like fantasy.

Sadly, this one isn't as good as Moondust or such. It isn#t the greatest Clarke stuff. It is on the average Clarke level, which is, of course, much higher than the average book of other authors.
@Sobachatina I like fantasy a lot.

You've talked about him a lot. What book would you recommend starting with?

@Sobachatina I like Moondust and The songs of distant Earth the best.
But the Space Odyssey and the Rama series are more popular.
I don#t know which one is better for the starting reader.

Ok, I'll check it out sometime. THanks.
As for my name- does it end in 'и' or 'ий' in that book. If the first then it is a foreign name and won't decline. If the second then it might.

in и.
I think that it is a recent translation, so more probable to keep the foreign sound without trying to make it more Russian by adding й.
Hah, the book I am reading now got both Hugo and Nebula.
So objecitvely, it should be considered better than Moondust.
But personally, i find it way too rambling. I have finished a third of it, and I have the feeling that the action hasn't started yet. Actaully, I don#t care that much about "action" in the narrow sense, but I still don#t know what the book is about.

4:54 PM
@rumtscho I know what you mean. A good candidate to be translated into Russian though. I read some Dostoevsky which was like one continuous rambling.

oh yes, I worked my way through Karamazovi once.
It had a coherent story, actually.
But I had a very hard time reading it, because it assumed implicit knowledge I din't have.
For example, somebody (I think it was even somebody in an official capacity, like a policeman) asked one of the main characters "Did you kill X?"
And the character asked said "I swear on my honor as military officer that I didn't"
From thre on, there was no question that he wasn#t the killer.
