Guess I can throw that idea for a community ad away.. :)

@CamilStaps what is the lower image?
there'll be a new Arduino proposal

user61389
@jippie a mess

it is still online
oh it is a picture of one of your projects

user61389
@jippie I guess on something with RF, py2ohh.w2c.com.br/trx/vfo40-80/vfo1.JPG, but I'm not sure / have no idea who made this

ha-ha

user61389
Ah, apparently it is some kind of ola amigos

8:26 PM
@jippie @CamilStaps BBC tells me there is some sort of controvercy in your country about what kind of song the new king will get for the inauguration? Jeez, the problems some countries have!

user61389
@angelatlarge did that make it to BBC? Really..

@angelatlarge yeah I heard something like that too. Poor young king-to-be who is forced to listen to 'his' song while nobody took the effort to ask him what he likes.
/me is not really royalty aware.

@jippie Apparently, he likes it. But some people think that it isn't respectful enough.

he has to like it.
it is his job

Like I said: the problems some countries have.

8:29 PM
these people just want to profilate themselves.
yes, we have bigger problems than that

@jippie And if you did have problems, you always have a read-made solution in the coffeeshop next door.

i don't smoke

@jippie Hence the problems.

if only that was my biggest problem
what was your mosfet / bjt question again @angelatlarge

@jippie Can I have a reference on that?

8:37 PM
...

@jippie I have no idea what you are asking about

m

user61389
Ah I spoiled again, didn't I?

Are you sure you don't smoke?

Q: BJTs versus (MOS)FET to switch a load from a microcontroller

angelatlargeI would like to know what are the reasons for choosing bipolar junction transistor (BJT) versus a field-effect transistor (FET) (MOSFET or a JFET) to switch a load from a microcontroller. In our hypothetical situation, assume that the load requires more current than the microcontroller can provid...

@angelatlarge yes

@jippie Ok, what's the question?

@angelatlarge the url to that question

@jippie Oh, you just needed to find that question? Sorry. I am no help. Maybe I should smoke something.

When we launched Careers 2.0 back in 2011, we set out with a goal: make the job search process better for the millions of programmers who visit our site every month. Part of achieving this goal is educating employers about what you want from them. In the past, our annual user survey helped us help companies change the way they found and hired programmers, while Joel’s book on how to find the best technical talent and his talk on how to stand out and attract top talent are a few other examples of how we’ve worked to educate tech companies on what you really want. …

Why don't we have this for EE? @Kortuk

@jippie careers?

9:02 PM
uhhuh

@jippie that is SE wide,.

user61389
@Kortuk huh? I thought Careers 2.0 was for programmers only - careers.stackoverflow.com/about

@CamilStaps hmm, whatever. I had an invite to it a long time ago, I assume not for my 150 rep on SO

@Kortuk It was for your writing skills

@Kortuk you probably wrote an answer which received an upvote there

9:06 PM
@Kortuk (which I think I just fine/good/perfect -> never noticed anything)
@Kortuk BTW, @CamilStaps has a question for you about some comment you made long ago...

@angelatlarge ohh?/

user61389
@angelatlarge @Kortuk nah, only if you're bored (board!?)

UPVOTE ME!!!!! I AM LONELY. — Kortuk Mar 22 at 21:44

@CamilStaps did you find an old one when I was still learning?

@CamilStaps We are the board. He is a mod
I guess he's a board too.
Maybe more like a plank

9:08 PM
@CamilStaps haha. no one was giving scifi love, and people like olin were voting down another SE's ad, no idea why.

@CamilStaps Are you giving me hard time about a typo?

@CamilStaps Bastard! But your's is funny!

user61389
@Kortuk I downvoted too :) it's funny how fast the first comparisons with Olin were made, by the way

@CamilStaps Haha. No, this time i picked olin unrelated to other things, but because:

@DavidKessner He's like 1 micro-Olin.

@Camil: It's a reference to the Star Wars death star, but that still doesn't explain the purpose of this ad. Again, who is supposed to be convinced to do what by this ad? — Olin Lathrop Mar 17 at 14:09

It took me a while, but I like that ad, actually

user61389
@Kortuk yeah, well, I have to agree with Olin, but that's also because I never watched Star Wars, probably

Looks like a funny fish at first
@CamilStaps Sigh. The youth these days

@CamilStaps that is fine if you dont get teh ad, why dowvote another SE trying to get its name out there?

>! huh?

9:12 PM
You know what the problem with that ad is: the indentation is perfectly circular, but where it is, it needs to be squished

user61389
@Kortuk the community ads should have to do something with EE, I believe. Otherwise, one could also ad an add with "Cooking questions? Try Seasoned Advice instead."

That's one problem anyway.
@CamilStaps "Forgot to put a heatsink on that voltage regulator? Try Seasoned Advice!"
It give you 5.0V and a fried egg

@CamilStaps Ha. It should have something to do with out site, that is why I support any nice looking SE add. It does not detract and I enjoy it. Either way, not a huge deal to disagree, but I am going to write comments to ask for upvotes.

@CamilStaps is your LM317 stable yet?
@Kortuk can I add an ad for myself, so if someone clicks on it I get rich?

@jippie technically it should be a non-profit, but whatever, we have not been strict about that.

user61389
9:16 PM
@jippie the problem is gone for now, but I'm not sure for how long..

user61389
Can I add an ad for Olin, so if someone clicks, he gets rich?

@CamilStaps that is a ridiculous idea

user61389
I am going to finish a job before going to sleep, so.. bye!

@CamilStaps You are a student, it is saturday evening. What do you mean by: "going to sleep" at 23:30!?

I am looking forward to a good answer to this:

Q: Compare AVR programming tools

mFeinsteinI am dealing with PICs for some time and now I want to learn how to use an AVR. I have 2 MCUs in here, the AT32UC3C2512C-A2UT and the ATXMEGA32A4U-AU but I still dont have any programming tools. In the PIC, things are pretty simple: You just buy PIC Kit 3 and you can program and debug all PICs ...

Unfortunately, the only answer there now is not very useful.

10:57 PM
Man, I am full of snarky comments today!

hhh
Stupid question: is there anything like potentiometer for caps? I need various small caps so wondered whether it is possible to buy some component where it is possible to adjust the cap?!
I found en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_capacitor but looks outdated, there must be smaller versions of this

@hhh Have you tried ebay?

hhh
Yes, apparently called variable trimmer caps...trying to get assorted set

11:23 PM
hey all
got a quick question, anyone hom?

@vicatcu Hiya. Whats up?

the idea is I want 5V out when 5V connects to 'bas' and 3V out when 5V is disconnected from 'bas'
doesn't act that way in sim, am i doing it wrong?

@vicatcu I haven't used the simulator much, but if both are connected, you will be discharging V2 into V1, right? V1 wants 3V between Vcc and ground and V2 wants 5V. Since both are ideal V sources both cannot be satisfied.

i thought the p-fet would cut 3V off when 5V was engaged
i.e. connected to bas

Ah, sorry, I thought you meant a vertical connection from V2, gotcha.
@vicatcu If you put a switch in there, it would be much clearer :)

11:30 PM
ah true
refresh

@vicatcu Nice. I am not a MOSFET guy, but let me think about it for a sec...

me neither

@vicatcu Honestly, I don't really see what the MOSFET is doing there for you: vout is tied to base, right? So Vout will be at whatever the base is, either 0V or 5V. That's what comes to my mind.

yea you're right

@vicatcu Ok, gotta get back to "work-work" for a little while. Good luck.

11:36 PM
so is the only way to allow power from two different sources a diode junction?
ok later
