1:17 AM
@DavidFreitag I'd hit that.

@Simon I can't help but laugh when i look at it

@DavidFreitag Are you at school right now?

@Simon Nupe. I have very early classes this semester. Although I am working on a physics take-home test right now

@DavidFreitag Oh, I thought you were doing night classes.

@Simon Nope. This is my last semester and the classes I have are only offered once per semester and I got shafted with 10/11am ones

1:23 AM
@DavidFreitag Neat, then you're all done with school?

@Simon No, then I transfer to the local university as a junior and work to a BA in comp sci

Ah, I see.

This will finish up my ASC. Luckily I'm graduating in the fall semester so I don't have to walk to get my diploma, they just mail it to me

The heck is an ASC?

Associates degree

1:27 AM
Bleh, no idea what that is.

a 2 year degree
BA -> Bachelors -> 4 year degree

4? I thought it was 3 like a bachelor here.
Will you be able to complete yours in 2 years since you did a 2 years degree?

Well technically there is no hard set requirement that you stay for four years. They only thing you need is the credits. If you can get all ~150ish credits in three years they wont care.
@Simon No, my ASC took me closer to three years to get since I work full time.
7 semesters including 3 summer semesters.

dayum
You must be really motivated to keep going.

It helps that I'm not paying for any of it

1:33 AM
Oh yeah, that's cool.

well besides books, calculators, computers etc...

Still pretty good.

especially since all of those things are tax deductible

2:33 AM
@TerryChia Hey you donut, do you know anything about web-based music server/player?

@Simon No.

Aw.

All my files are local anyway.

I'd like to upload my music to a linux box to access it anywhere.

2:35 AM
@DavidFreitag It's funnier if you bit.ly it.

lulz

@TerryChia I didn't really do it to be funny

I did find some options but not sure which one to choose so I guess I'm just gonna have to test them.

@Simon This looks promising. askubuntu.com/questions/28039/…

Isn't that LAN only?

2:37 AM
@Simon There are several options in there, read down

@DavidFreitag Reading is difficult for Canadians. ;)

This hard 8=============D

For some reason my brain read that as "Reading is hard for Canadians"

@Simon's D is so famous blink-182 wrote a song about it.

Let's go back in time.
MEMORIEZ

2:41 AM
@Simon 'dat nostalgia

Yeah, sigh.

2:54 AM
K, managing servers with Digital Ocean is amazing.

@Simon and super cheap
I dropped both my AWS instances for digital ocean

@Simon How so?

@DavidFreitag Ya, I got the 5 bucks instance to do some testing/projects
@Xander The Web UI makes it very simple and quick.

@Simon And deploying to SSDs is super fast

@DavidFreitag Yup, 60 secs.

3:02 AM
@DavidFreitag Not really comparable products.
With AWS you get access to much more than a simple VPS.

@TerryChia True, but all I wanted was a VPS

@DavidFreitag Aye, and DO makes perfect sense for that.

Yaaaar. I be havin' a southern accent.

> Oh, well. At least you always have the Daniel's shooting simulator to sate your need for firing weapons into black voids.
That sounds suspiciously like an euphemism.

4:03 AM
I was almost fired from a job driving the hearse in funeral processions, but then the funeral home realized how much business I was creating for them.
3

@StackExchange Hahahaha - massage therapist...

@DavidFreitag Surgeon is terrifying.

@TerryChia Heh, I didn't see that one. Yeah that inspires terror.

I'd assume Fedex driver is normal.

Yeah, we have had a few regular fedex drivers at work. They are all very insane drivers

4:12 AM
@TerryChia I hope not. Fedex is delivering me 26 bottles of wine tomorrow.

@Xander Big party?

@DavidFreitag No. Why?

@Xander Dunno, that's quite a lot of wine.

@DavidFreitag Well, yes, if you plan to drink it all at once. :-)

@Xander I always want to get a bottle of wine when I stop at the package store, but I always end up standing there staring at a few hundred bottles of wine and giving up

4:17 AM
@DavidFreitag LOL. Yeah, it gets to be information overload pretty quickly if you don't know exactly what you want.

@Xander Something red, something good.

@DavidFreitag Some of this set is 2011 Red Zin, which we probably won't even open for another year or two.

So @Xander is a coffee snob, a beer expert as well as a wine connoisseur. That sounds expensive.

@TerryChia And don't forget whiskey, (and whisky) which are probably my most expensive beverage habit.
@TerryChia And tea, though that's only expensive when I go for the loose-leaf stuff, which isn't very often.

@Xander Yeah but mentioning you being a whisky snob in a room with @RoryAlsop and @AviD seems a bit lame. ;)

4:20 AM
Yeesh, sometimes I'm glad I have an unsophisticated pallet.

@TerryChia Yes, this is true.
@DavidFreitag Nothing wrong with that. Drinks should be about the enjoyment, not the cost. Sometimes, in fact, the cost alone can negatively impact the enjoyment, which is entirely counter-productive.

@DavidFreitag Does that mean "I like decent but not too expensive stuff" or "I'll stuff anything remotely edible down my throat"?

@Xander I'm not entirely worried about cost. If I truly like something I'll spend whatever the cost to get it (within reason obviously). I'm just glad I don't have to ;]
@TerryChia It's more along the lines of "I enjoy the lesser things in life"

@DavidFreitag If I want some ARM boards with decent compute power (CPU and RAM) but don't require too many ports and stuff what do you recommend I get?

@TerryChia That depends on your version of decent

4:26 AM
Cost is definitely a factor.
@DavidFreitag I'll probably get a bunch of them to cluster.
So something nice from a cost/performance perspective.
Honestly I'm not sure how powerful ARM chips are now; I want something I can run tests and compile stuff on.

Well there's always the RasPi. It's probably the cheapest you will find out there
which is $35
Or the banana pi. More powerful dual core Allwinner A20 CPU and gigabit ethernet for $63

@DavidFreitag I'll want something with a bit more power. :) I have a rasppi and it absolutely sucks.
@DavidFreitag Whoo yeah, the allwinner a20 looks good.

A bit more expensive, but its better than the banana pi

@DavidFreitag I assume those boards have no problems running Linux?

1GB ram, 4GB Nand flash with Gigabit ethernet 2 usb ports and a sata

4:36 AM
Yeah that looks like a winner. Cheers.

@TerryChia Yes but it won't be as easy as the pi
You will most likely need to compile your own kernel

@DavidFreitag Won't be a problem.
:)

@TerryChia I didn't think it would, but I thought it warranted the disclaimer ;]

5 hours later…
9:43 AM
@TerryChia high-end and even mid-end smartphones have pretty beefy ARM CPUs. They're insanely expensive if you just want the CPU, but if you already have one lying around, you might not need another device.
oh, and you'd typically compile on a PC and run on the ARM board
also you can run qemu on your PC if all you want to do is test some ARM binaries, but performance is poor

@Gilles Only Android device I have is a first gen Nexus 7 sadly.
That Allwinner board @DavidFreitag suggested looks perfect.

morning!
almost time for elevenses

10:04 AM
mayday, mayday, SOS, code red
the production at the office is at 0%
we ran out of coffee.... ;~;

@Lighty is there no emergency coffee delivery service near you?

@RoryAlsop I think that's just @Lighty.
He's an intern after all no?

i am, we have to order it (nespresso machine capsules)
well, as intern, its my job to deliver coffee when theres none in the office, which mean me going to the other side of the building (where the good coffee is served), instead of the lobby in this building
they ahve a different public machine (takes coins) in building 2
the one in our building is just... yuck
watery stuff that claims to taste like coffee

11:03 AM
EY sponsored a decent coffee machine once because they had a crappy one at the client
apparently landed a lot of extra sales

@LucasKauffman brilliant

raz
11:41 AM
Coffee is the old way, Monster's are your friend.

@raz no, not really
I like the taste of coffee, Monster tastes horrible

raz
Eh, it's like alcohol. At first you dont' like it. But then you realize it's delicious.

@raz i normally drink those too :3

@raz No you'd still be comparing J&B to Single Malt Macallan

@LucasKauffman well, sure, after you finish a whole bottle, they both taste the same.

11:48 AM
@AviD nope
:-)
J&B leaves you feeling dirty

@RoryAlsop if @LucasKauffman drank a whole bottle of Macallan all at once, he'd feel pretty dirty.

@AviD lol

@LucasKauffman The hell is Monster?

@Adnan is an energy drink

raz
@Adrian energy drink

11:55 AM
not as good as red bull

@raz So, it's not only the girls in the bar who call me Adrian

raz
@LucasKauffman Lagavulin is my preferred single malt

@RoryAlsop personally I dont like redbull as much as some others
like sucking on a licorice plant.
@Adnan So, it's not only the girls in the bar who call you Monster. ;-)
@raz okay @everbody, he's not all bad.

@AviD He knows how to Google. Yup, he checks out

raz
Talking about me?
I'm confused

12:02 PM
You're confused? Welcome to the DMZ!

raz
Sweet, I fit right in

:3

@AviD - have you tasted some of the new flavoured red bulls? Silver, blue and red I think. The silver is actually alright.
As a transport mechanism for caffeine they are pretty nice.

nope

But Monster sponsor some of our gigs. Red Bull have never done that :-(

12:04 PM
red bull is almost twice the price as some of the others here, and less the kick.

raz
^^

monster here costs 1.05euros for a 500ml can, redbull costs around 1,90 varying to 2.20 for a 225ml can o.o

Every time this topic is opened, I start thinking that I should really start using caffeine

@AviD I'd feel like a Muslim having to eat porc
BLASPHEMY

@LucasKauffman really? Macallan is halal for you?
you Belgians are strange. Really strange.
Damn Belgians.

raz
12:10 PM
Belgians make great beer, I'm ok with them.

@Adnan heh, I like how you say "using" caffeine. Not drinking it. Like drugs.

@AviD As an outsider, this is how I see it

heh, no that is justified.

In my whole life, I've had probably 7-8 coffee cups and 1-2 energy drinks

@AviD All great drinks and food should be savoured

12:12 PM
@Adnan ALL AT ONCE??? I'm surprised your heart survived.

Over 15 years, I believe
@RoryAlsop @AViD A news on the the Careers.SO thing?
Sorry for the nagging, but it would be very very nice to have it

@AviD yep - this is how I see it too. Using caffeine
@Adnan some days I have more than that
@Adnan none yet - guessing best bet is to follow that meta.se question on it
Shog9 was aware and said he'd look into it

@Gilles Also, qemu won't trap on unaligned access, so tests won't be complete (of course, proper C code does not do unaligned accesses, but not all 3rd-party libraries are properly implemented).

12:34 PM
Whaaaa?! A second bounty you offer on a question has a minimum of 100, and a third one is 200!
Well, that's shitty

@Adnan Well, makes sense, in a way. If you want to offer a second bounty, then the first bounty "didn't work" and the second bounty should thus be bigger.

@ThomasPornin Bigger is better
2
MORE

@ThomasPornin My case is promoting unanswered meta.SE questions (unresolved bugs, no official answers, etc.)
I don't mind spending 50 rep on some deserving issue
and I don't think the SE team is looking for rep points as incentive to do their job

@Adnan How do bounties work on meta.SE ?

@ThomasPornin Looks like they work the same way as on anything site
At least this is what I noticed

12:42 PM
mmh, the general meta.SE, or the infosec-specific meta.SE ?
Because in the latter, you tend to have the same rep as on the main site.

@ThomasPornin General Meta.SE

@Adnan Ah OK. That one has its own specific rep count.

i made my first JScript text-game, a fun little flick to learn certain functions and such
need some people to try it and tell me how much it sucks <3

@Lighty very much.
and I dont need to click the link for that.

@Lighty it sucks and you suck too

12:53 PM
@LucasKauffman not as much as your mom

but in all seriousness, for a beginning shrimp like me, is it good-ish?

It's a text game

yes, a very simple text game

@Lighty Awful

could be worse

1:00 PM
@Lighty Nope

yes

That's pretty much as bad as it can be

could be written in PHP

Good one, but nope

ahw ):
but it has dragons in it! D:

1:01 PM
this kevin nabben

and a shiny gem
@LucasKauffman whats with him? :o

@Lighty idk his name is in your code

@LucasKauffman thats me o.o

@Lighty Next time put your credit card in the code

1:20 PM
@Adnan He's not that dumb, he'd crypt it using MD5.

1:32 PM
@Lighty A game based on popups is the worst idea in history.
And that includes the invention of stupid.

Yosemite looks awesome, I can't wait!

@TerryChia Yaaay! Now we how you look!

I need a bit of help, what time does it say for you is this hangout with Astro Clay plus.google.com/+SedsOrg/posts ? I'm not sure for which time zone it displays the time for me
Says it's gonna be at 3:30 to me and I'm CEST, if that helps
anyone around? :P

9:30 PM for me

@Simon ah cool thanks

1:47 PM
I'm in Eastern.

Montreal, right?

Ya

UTC - 4h?
yeah it's like EDT

Yes.

cheers

1:51 PM
@TildalWave Fri, October 3, 4:30 AM
( I'm in GMT+3)

@Adnan yup cheers we've already established with @Simon it displays by your local time zone (really hate it when sites display time and don't include for which time zone it is, I'd expect better from Google at least)

@TildalWave It's a good thing if you double check in case my time is actually wrong on my Google account but it should be fine.

when you don't know which time zone it's for the error is up to two days
@Simon yes, you're right ... thanks @Adnan :)

Now let's all kiss

Group kiss!

1:57 PM
shit do we have to?
I'm down with some nasty bug ... erm, I've got a headache ... it's that time of the month ...

When I can't figure out a bug and it's not something that I immediately have to fix, I just stop working on that and then sometimes when I'm at home, I figure out what's the issue out of nowhere, without even thinking about it.

@Simon All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking. (Friedrich Nietzsche)

@ThomasPornin Very true.

But mind that it is an implication, not an equivalence. You need to walk to conceive a great thought, but you can also conceive a lot of not-so-great thoughts when you walk.

But the great thoughts might make up for the lesser ones.

2:10 PM
Or not.
Depending on who is doing the thinking.

Hehe.
@ThomasPornin Personally, my emotions alter my thoughts far too much, which usually ends up being negative. Taking a walk to think about a CS problem will be productive most of the time. On the other hand, taking a walk because I'm not feeling well about something that happened will probably make things worse.

@Simon Walking is for thinking about rational issues. For feelings, you need whisky.
6

@ThomasPornin Tehe, maybe that's what I'm doing wrong, I should swap beer for whisky.

2:39 PM
What was the rationale behind preventing sub-25-reppers from commenting?

@Adnan To prevent spam, and it used to be 50. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/12119/…
Seems stupid though. I don't know why you need a rep threshold to prevent spam in comments, but not answers.

@Xander Was there enough abuse to justify the amount of "I don't have enough rep to comment" answers?

@Xander Except now, people just post comments as answers which sucks.

@Simon Exactly

@Adnan I have no idea, but I suspect not. I suspect it was a "we should build this in, just in case" feature.
@Simon Yes.

2:57 PM
I've decided to create a new programming language. It is called Stupidlang, and it's basically a dialect of PHP.
Part troll for those hipsters who will flock to it, part education for everyone else. And part endless amusement.

@AviD What makes you think you can improve PHP?

@AviD And to develop in Stupidlang, you gotta buy a special instance of VS, which costs 10k a year.

Well I say "dialect" of PHP, it's really just very similar. As in exactly the same.
@Simon no, not VS, it will have its own IDE. Well, I say "IDE", I mean "very poor implementation of a text editor, with a menu to compile". Well, I say "compile", I mean "deploy to CI environment". Well, I say "deploy", I mean copy to production website over FTP.
@CodesInChaos "improve"? you think I'm trying to improve on PHP?
2 mins ago, by AviD
Well I say "dialect" of PHP, it's really just very similar. As in exactly the same.

@AviD And you won't be able to copy over FTP unless your credentials include one of the 100 most popular passwords, right?

@Simon passwords...? Ah no, you misunderstand.

3:03 PM
I'm sorry.

lol

@Simon oo, another idea for a new language, similar to Ook!. I will call it "Canadien", here is a sample:
Sorry. Sorry, sorry! Sorry.

What is it with you and the word "Canadien"?

@Simon you guise are foony.

BUT IT'S IN LE FRENCH!

3:07 PM
wait, isnt that how you spell it?

Hahahahaha
In French, yes.

RIGHT enough griping, time to learn another node.js framework.
I am sure that this time they did not repeat any or all of the silly beginner mistakes all the other frameworks made.
ach, the downside to researching the entire internet. Still, it's not like I'm not learning anything interesting, and it is a ton of fun.

@AviD You would listen to some real music at the same time too.

3:29 PM
SHOULD NOT WOULD

2 hours later…
5:10 PM
LIKE THE CEILING CAN'T HOLD US!

LIKE THE CEILING CAN'T HOLD USSSS

...... Wut?

5:33 PM
@Simon I always thought that adding "ay" between each vocal sounds more like a bad speech impediment than music.

@TildalWave Yeah well, I try to not question pop music that much.

raz
I stopped question it a long time ago.
questioning*
can't think today, maybe another monster in my future.

@Simon I just try not to listen to it, or be suggested by the industry what they think I should
Unless they're Canadian of course, in which case - Celine Dion FTW!!!
jesus dudes I was kidding!!

@TildalWave Haha :p

raz
Rush is Canadian

5:43 PM
@RoryAlsop So you bought a Oneplus one right?

@DavidFreitag can it be shellshocked?

@raz So is Bryan Adams.

@TildalWave It can be shelled, all you need is a modified howitzer

@Simon or Leonard Cohen

@TildalWave OR ME!
dat voice

raz
5:48 PM
Now now, Canada has apologized for Bryan Adams several times.

@Simon Well no wonder there's many nations missing at IAC 2014 then :P

:(

they said they had problems with visas but what they really meant to say is they don't want to share the same part of the world with @Simon

@DavidFreitag yup

@RoryAlsop Do you have any invites to share?

5:50 PM
@TildalWave When you fill up the form, there's a checkbox asking: "This country is Simon's home, are you sure you still want to go?"
True story.
Oh for fucks sake, is it that time of the month? Am I really gonna cue all the love songs I know?

@Simon and your national flag didn't have that maple leaf on it until you sat on its middle, right?

@DavidFreitag Not received any yet, but I will add you to the list

@RoryAlsop Haha, I thought there might be. Thanks

@TildalWave Look, everyone's happy about it, it's all good.

@Simon what I don't get is why has your flag so much red in it?
white I get

5:54 PM
@TildalWave It was that time of the month when I sat on it.

ewww
or the end of the South Park episode where they kill Kenny

raz
They almost always kill Kenny

6:10 PM

Q: Shellshock Vulnerability Information on Information Security Stack Exchange

IsziOver on the Information Security Stack Exchange, we have created a Community Wiki question to address some of the concerns regarding Shellshock vulnerabilities. What operating systems and devices are known to be affected by Shellshock? What patches are available? This is simply a list of produc...

Q: Effect on PCI compliance of not checking SSL certificate?

Eric R.PCI DSS states: "[You must...] verify that only trusted SSL/TLS keys/certificates are accepted." Long story short, our merchant provider just asked us to please stop verifying their certificate after we had some SSL handshake issues. Is this wrong?

Why even bother with SSL/TLS then?

@raz Yeah. Nothing like being asked to intentionally implement the equivalent of Apple's GOTO fail.

raz
@Xander Sometimes it just boggles the mind.

What kind of a company fixes their stuff? I might wanna work there :)
I could brag I'm in a I'll fix you if you'll fix me professional relationship :)))

6:41 PM
@Iszi I'm ashamed of you daddy, your question got owned.

raz
Oded was not pleased

Wait, Google uses algorithms? I thought they just place a cat in a box for each new query

@raz There. Answered.

@TildalWave They're all about monkeys you donut.

raz
@Xander Well done! Saving the ignorant one answer at a time.

6:57 PM
@TildalWave Theoretically, red is for England and white for France, thus symbolizing the two nations on which Canada was built.
As my wife said: there is more red than white on the flag.

raz
Yeah, "Don't mess with Canada... we'll dry up and blow away"

@ThomasPornin YOU HAVE A WIFE?
You donut, I thought you were the loner of all loners.

@Simon Thus it is written in my Security.SE profile: I also have a life.

@ThomasPornin I didn't believe it until now.

raz
@Thomas life != wife

7:00 PM
Oh man, maybe she's from here, hence why you moved here. This is getting interesting.
I bet you met her at a zoo here while watching the bears.
4

@ThomasPornin Why white for France? Oh,... wait. For the same reason red is for England, no?
so the Canadian national flag is an embodiment of cliché?
@Simon How do you make a bear area in the zoos of Canada? You just arbitrarily decide which part of the country is gonna be a zoo and put a few signs around it?
2

@TildalWave That's how we used to do it back then. Now, we have a sophisticated underground pipeline to transfer bears.

7:16 PM
@Simon A technical error whilst copying the idea of Belgians because you had to translate it into two languages?
The translator thought: Neah, this is Canada. Beer would freeze in the pipes, but we could stuff bears through them, how does that sound?

7:42 PM
@TildalWave White was the main colour for France before 1789. Québec was lost to England in 1763 (battle in 1759, treaty signed in 1763).
@TildalWave At Saint-Félicien (a town in Québec), there is a zoo where they put the tourists in a cage, and the bears are on the outside.

Hence why we are gud m8s with da Brits.

The bears find it neat. For some reason, the tourists like it too.

@ThomasPornin You would know that.
@ThomasPornin Does your wife ask you to recite cryptographic algorithms in bed?
"Honey, let's do PBKDF2 today"
