01:00 - 18:0018:00 - 22:00

6:00 PM
So, the kids are on vacation this week. We took them to the Tank Museum (hosted on military base) nearby. they had a great time and were impressed by those war machines.
My daughters were under-impressed by the under-representation of female tank soldiers in the promotional films, though....

6:11 PM
@AviD No - I have to have 1 iPad work force me to use, and there is an old apple device, and the kids have some ipoddy things - doesn't mean I'm not a Unix bod through and through. My unix devices outnumber apple ones by 23 to 5

Sanity check:
> b. Since the impulse is spread over a greater period of time, your momentum is decreased.

@RoryAlsop most the Apple ones are unix devices nowadays.

@AviD I would have thought you guys would have been the country to show the equality in the military :-)

so double-score

@tylerl I'm not that modern

6:12 PM
@RoryAlsop yeah, but @TerryChia was saying you needed a DMZ app for your mobile, which would be your iPad.

Plus - iPads that are owned by your work don't count, as you can't do anything to make them nicer

@RoryAlsop A hammer works nicely ;]

@AviD I still prefer to use my smartphone, despite it being much smaller
@DavidFreitag Hahahaha - you should see the shattered screen I have on it
damn thing keeps not dying

@RoryAlsop well, some, but I think the movies were done a while ago. There were some females, but I guess the "typical" is still male... dunno.
@RoryAlsop so you're saying sometimes smaller is better?

@AviD If I compare an android device to an apple device - always, yes :-)
(avoids euphemisms nicely)
weird repeat there

6:14 PM
I guess, if it's smaller, you would need to do that twice.

@AviD It ain't the size of the cruise missile, it's the potency of that warhead.

@DavidFreitag shouldnt it be the guidance system?

@AviD Nah we have plenty of the damn things we'll hit something important eventually.

btw re tanks, in case you missed my tweet - one of the first things my kid says, as we walk up to the older tanks - "but look at all those weak spots!"

@AviD brilliant!
I was impressed by the Israel space launch requirements - retrograde. Dunno what that means in terms of extra propellant/reduced payload

6:16 PM
a few minutes later, my other kid is asking about a certain feature of the newer tank models - "ah, is that to protect the weak spots?"
@RoryAlsop I didnt realize there was an Israeli space launch, till @TildalWave mentioned it...

6:31 PM
DOGECOIN TO THE MOON

Dear Lord. I had no idea Dogecoin has its "own" symbol.

@Kisunminttu Everybody please close down the internet. We have lost.

@AviD Hey, slow down a minute. This could be the best thing that's ever happened to humanity. The reign of Doge will provide us with much wow.

@Kisunminttu I'm sorry, but your association with @Adnan has proved that your taste in anything is forfeit.
2
sorry @Adnan ;-)

@AviD Wow. So everything I say from now on will be of lesser value than what you guys say?

6:39 PM
@Kisunminttu I wouldnt say of lesser value, just assumed to be based on... a certain preference, if you will. ;-)
nah, just kidding, we dont have any values here.

@AviD Damnit! I was trying to lure you into a trap where I could accuse you of being sexist. (Hint: the word "guys")

ahhh, nah, not at all.
at least, not from my end.

Speaking of values, I just got my peer evaluation from the Python course. My code was unfinished but I worked a lot on it and I learned new things, so I'm proud of myself for trying. Most of the evaluations said "yup, your code is screwed, but A for effort!", one person even told me where I went wrong.

@Kisunminttu very cool!

But then... then there was this one comment that read: "Great job!" I started laughing so hard

6:42 PM
I bought a slicer dicer
I have cut myself already three times while doing the dishes, the damn thing is razor sharp

if code is easy to write, and it comes out correct - it's time to change jobs.
or at least projects.
you dont learn anything from correct, easy code.

@LucasKauffman, tired of your kitchen turning grey and your knife falling on the floor every time you try to slice lettuce?
@AviD My thoughts exactly

@Kisunminttu indeed

Speaking of things you can also get on TVShop, I was so close to buying a ceramic frying pan once. Frying stuff seemed so effortless with it.

@Kisunminttu to be honest it does make life easier

6:45 PM
@LucasKauffman I believe you. Does it take up a lot of space?

speaking of buying awesome things to make life easier, I just got one of these: aeropress.com

I was quite skeptical but it does make it easier to make fruit salads or slice stuff like onions or bell peppers
tomatoes not too good
@Kisunminttu not really
@Kisunminttu it all fits in a single box

only made a couple of cups yet, but so far its awesome: much easier to clean than a french press, much quicker and easier to prepare - and the coffee is just fan.freakin.tastic.

@AviD better than nespresso ristretto india origins?

@LucasKauffman please. thats one of those hipster machines that put out starbucks-style espresso?

6:48 PM
@AviD you don't know nespresso?

@LucasKauffman nespresso yes, the indian risotto specifically not really

@AviD You a fan of some nice coffee?

@AviD it's the strongest variety they have
I like a cup of it in the morning
if I drink more than three I get hyper

@Kisunminttu yeah. I recently started getting fresh single source from a boutique shop here.
every time, I order a different type, from around the world.

@AviD Ooooh! What's your favorite so far?

6:50 PM
this week I have Tanzanian. Very nice.

Mine is djimmah mocha

@Kisunminttu Hmm. I think as a region, it would be pacific area.

@AviD that grinder, can you actually take it with you?

I think the Papua New Guinea Sigri was my favorite.

like is it easy to make a single cup?

6:52 PM
The Panama Palymra was also fantastic, though that is central american.
@Kisunminttu ooh, havent had that yet.
@LucasKauffman its not a grinder, its a press.

@AviD The other one I really liked was from Kenya

@AviD can I take it to work? I'm currently at a client where the coffee is incredible shit

@LucasKauffman incredibly simple! grinds, water, 10-second mix, press gently. Done.

@AviD might order one then

Oh, and that is just about all the cleanup, too - just pop out the puck, wipe the end clean.
@LucasKauffman yeah, its pretty small - the size in that pic is a match.
5

6:54 PM
@AviD [:double entendre]

you do need pretty fine grind for it though.
@LucasKauffman I really hope you replied to the wrong one there ;-)

nope
so incredible dirty

@Kisunminttu @xander also digs dem beans, he pointed me at the panama. really might be my favorite...

@AviD which one should I order though?

@LucasKauffman hehe
@LucasKauffman which coffee or which press?

6:56 PM
@AviD which press

@LucasKauffman I think there is only one kind?

@AviD I will definitely try that one, then.

packaged with other stuff, too

@AviD they have like javajug and hario grinder?

I'm a lazy git, so I still get my coffee pre-ground. Probably get around to buying a grinder in a couple months....
@LucasKauffman ah, well if you want a grinder.... just make sure its a burr grinder, and has a small enough setting.

6:58 PM
@AviD what is the disk fine filter?

though if they are packaging it, I assume its a good fit.
@LucasKauffman thats the filter at the bottom of the press.

@AviD you need one?

the basic press comes with like 350 filters, and you can easily reuse them, so its at least a year's supply.

@AviD ah so the DISK is like a permanent one?
mmm what would you buy?

@LucasKauffman always buy sharperer knives. I just got a set of 6 new ceramic ones. Sooooo slicy dicy

7:01 PM
@LucasKauffman ah yeah, I guess so. the regular ones are kinda like paperish. you dont need it, but...

@RoryAlsop I have a kit actually, but I use it mainly for meat and fish, veggies ...meh

@RoryAlsop oh yeah! I love me my ceramic knives.
aaaand you can get them on an airplane.... ;-)

@AviD What're you implying?

@LucasKauffman I would say dont bother with it, the press comes with the paper filters - no reason to drop another ~10EU if you dont even like it....

@AviD actually mate of mine took one on an airplane by accident (one of those credit card foldable ones)

7:02 PM
@Kisunminttu aaaaabsolutely nothing. But if anyone is checking up on @Adnan.... ;-)
oh btw @LucasKauffman - if you do get the AeroPress, be careful when you press - first time I made one, I managed to tip the cup over and spill coffee all over my father-in-law....

@AviD ooh :/

could watch it all day
It takes current meteorological data

@LucasKauffman my mistake for using a mug with a rounded bottom...

Alright, I'm off to see my fantabulous significant other.

@Kisunminttu oh! does @Adnan know about him?

7:08 PM
I hope you guys have a nice evening.

or her, whatever - we're not judging. ;-)

@AviD Nice try. I'm lucky that the plot isn't that thick : )

dammit @Adnan I've been picking on you too much lately. Sorry about that, I blame @Simon's absence.

@Kisunminttu or is it?

@Kisunminttu "plot", hehe

7:10 PM
@AviD Kinda forced...
Alright, gotta run.

@Kisunminttu hehehe, now you're just baiting me.
oh cool, just realized the Aeropress is made by the same people that made aerobies (the better-than-frisbee frisbees).

1 hour later…
8:15 PM
@AviD Fun fact: best boomerang I ever made started life as an Aerobie. I cut it in half, removed the rubber from the outside edge, and made a woomera for it. Ideal for hunting.

@RoryAlsop wow, awesome! Kill anything?
though ftr they also sell aerobie-style boomerangs too...

@RoryAlsop What's a woomera? I only know of Woomera in Oz that used to be the test site (also rocket launches)

A woomera is a wooden Australian Aboriginal spear-throwing device. Similar to an atlatl, it is an extension of the human arm that enables a spear to travel at a greater speed and force than possible with the unaided arm. The town of Woomera in South Australia, founded in 1947 as the home of the Anglo-Australian Long Range Weapons Establishment, is named after the spear thrower. Description The woomera is in length. One end is wide, while the other is more pointed and has a hook. The woomera was traditionally decorated with incised or painted designs that indicated belonging to a parti...

ah cool, didn't know that

@TildalWave neither did I, but Google did!

8:26 PM
@AviD someone had to, I'm glad it was you :))
(that googled it)

well, chrome did it for me :-)

ok so that Woomera town is named after woomera, because a woomera is a device that enables you to throw the spear farther, and the site was for long range weapons ... knowing how Oz names things, it makes perfect sense

8:38 PM
@TildalWave exactly right
Mine was about 4ft long, with a notch for the end of the boomerang. Could launch it so fast it would take about 20 seconds to come back
4

@RoryAlsop I'm not sure what "boomerang" is referring to in that sentence.

hehe who starred that?
ah, right ... @AviD of course :)

hehe... Grandma's chicken salad ;-)

Client: As a side note, have you ever heard of XSS vulnerability? A customer says there's one on their site.
Me: Yes, I've heard of them. And seeing one on that site wouldn't surprise me in the least.
multi-line and markdown don't get along.

@tylerl No, they don't. And it pisses me off every time too.

8:46 PM
If SE would open-source their chat code, I could fix it for them.

@TildalWave So, a woomera is kinda like an atlatl?

@Iszi that sentence escalated quickly.

@Iszi exactly like one, I think.

Oh, hey. It's even in the second sentence of the Wiki article.

8:48 PM
> A woomera is a wooden Australian Aboriginal spear-throwing device.[1][2][3] Similar to an atlatl, it is an extension of the human arm that enables a spear to travel at a greater speed and force than possible with the unaided arm.
I have the History Channel to thank for my atlatl awareness.

@Iszi I always get atlatls and axolotls mixed up...which explains why I have a stick in a tank, and a very upset lizard embedded in a kangaroo's head
3

Oh, wow. Now I see I was a little behind there. Just now noticed @AviD linked the woomera article.

It happens to the best of us.

@RoryAlsop Ok, I get the stick. But how did you manage the lizard?

@Iszi erm... :-)

8:55 PM
is this one of those repeating plot devices that never get explained?
Like "the noodle incident".

@AviD hahahahaha - I have no idea what that is, but now I do have an idea of what it could be. Explanation is not needed.

Favorite thing about (most) Linux window managers: Alt+drag to move windows, Alt-right-mouse-drag to resize them. No more hunting for the stupid window border. Can never go back to Microsoft ever again.

@RoryAlsop WHAAAAT. of course you know what that is. A certain young boy with his pal tiger?

I'm not aware of the noodle incident. I feel like I should be, but it probably involves TVTropes and I'm still working - not a good combination for productivity's sake.

Calvin is a fictional character, and is the title character of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson. Calvin demonstrates a level of wisdom, vocabulary and humor unusual for a six year-old boy. However, in many ways he is typical for his age: he absolutely hates baths, and fears and hates his babysitter, refuses to go to school, frequently disobeys his parents, and is lazy and selfish. Calvin frequently loses himself in various fantastical worlds of his own imagining. On the rare occasions on which he applies himself, Calvin's projects in school are very well received, to h...
there is even a section there for it :-)

8:58 PM
@Iszi I have many Calvin and Hobbes books but never heard of that

> The Noodle Incident is a running gag about an event at school in which Calvin was involved in the past. Whenever a character mentions it to Calvin, he immediately gets very defensive about it. The June 10, 1989 strip hinted that worms were involved. The incident itself is never shown or explained, although various allusions appear throughout the strip.

The term has since become television jargon for any unexplained incident that is mentioned on-screen.

I suppose we should expect @AviD to have superior knowledge on that topic. After all, he and Hobbes are practically cousins.

Sounds awfully like the "Oh no, not again" from the bowl of petunias

@RoryAlsop Only heard that in reference to HHTG

@tylerl that's the one :-)

9:01 PM
@tylerl HHTG?

HHGTTG, to be precise
Hitch Hikers' Guide To The Galaxy

@RoryAlsop Ah.
Actually, I was kind-of expecting the noodle incident to be about HIMYM. Seems like their kind of humor.

@Iszi like the goat in the bathroom?

@Iszi I think I was as well...
@AviD now you're just making things up...

haha, nooo

9:03 PM
@AviD I haven't seen past the first couple episodes of HIMYM.

In my 2nd year at university we did have the tractor tyre/skier incident in my flat...

"The Goat" is the 17th episode in the third season of the television series How I Met Your Mother and 61st overall. It originally aired on April 28, 2008. Plot The episode begins with the aftermath of the events of "Sandcastles in the Sand": Barney and Robin are in bed together. Robin proposes that they pretend their tryst never happened, and Barney agrees. However, Barney feels quite awkward and uncomfortable around Ted at MacLaren's later in the day. Hoping to find an excuse for his and Robin's actions, Barney seeks out Marshall to help him find a loophole in the Bro Code, a book l...

@Iszi 15 minutes ago I didn't even know what a woomera is and you're asking me?

was also mentioned a few other times earlier on.

I did know of the Woomera tho

9:05 PM
@AviD that explanation makes absolutely no sense
I have read it twice and can't make head nor tail of it

@RoryAlsop so, standard fare for HIMYM.

@RoryAlsop Wait a sec... shit in here is supposed to make sense?!
4

It might help if I watch it and understand who the characters are
@Iszi that actually made me laugh
out loud
like a real life lol

@RoryAlsop *as opposed to WHAT??

9:06 PM
hahahaa, I was just pulling that up for you!

@AviD I have it on speed dial now

hehe

right - Finnish beer time (courtesy of @Adnan)
Don't worry RoryM - I'm only drinking one of each of the pairs of beers

and then split the other one?

lol
(really)

9:10 PM
Actually... Kloster Andechs...it's not Finnish at all...

9:20 PM
> When the evening passes into dusk and the day draws to a close, time goes a little slower. Just the right time for a glass of Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel.
With a description like that and half of the year in Finland matching it perfectly, I'm not surprised it's popular there :)
it's a good beer tho, I like the dark one (gold label)

Yup, gold label on this
