2:00 PM
Dammit, you guys!
you're just encouraging her.

@AviD ♥

@AviD OMOGOD @AviD! GUURL SAID LENGTH.. OMOGOD!
YOU KNOW.. GURL.. INTERNET.. LENGTH.. FUNNY.. GURL!
HOEHE.. BEWBS

Jesus. Kids today.

To be fair, this has become kind of a reflex for me at this point ... Not my fault anymore.

@Adnan yeah. exactly. Those kiddies keep starring that crap.

2:02 PM
Pretty much everything starred on the DMZ is crap.
13

@FEichinger I'm pretty sure somebody who shot somebody once tried that defence

"I was just following orders" has usually worked in the past.

Wasn't starring supposed to be for something useful and relevant to the conversation?

@Adnan Oh, look, somebody isn't ignoring me. That makes me sad. Now I need to step up my game again.

@FEichinger Yeah, I think yesterday I saw that your icon is small. I changed my mind, you're alright.
@ScottPack Ahhhh.. true.

2:05 PM
... Well dammit. It was so nice not having to interact with you.

@FEichinger I know, I felt the same.

@Adnan notice how this comment didn't receive a star.

but all nice things must come to an end.

Guess I can always return the favour and ignore you instead.

you two should just get a room

2:06 PM

 The DMZ

A serious place where infosec is discussed PS we don't do hard...

@kalina Says you of all people ಠ_ಠ

@FEichinger I don't know what you're talking about
I'm innocent

@FEichinger What's that supposed to mean?

You know full well what I'm talking about, lady. Full well.

did you just call @Adnan a lady?

2:07 PM
...
Maybe.

@kalina I know, right? It felt warm and fuzzy.
Like it's the right thing to do

@Adnan don't get any ideas, you wouldn't be able to pull it off
not emotional enough

@kalina I wish I could link you something form my Facebook photos.
Last Halloween I dressed as a lady with breast cancer.

I don't need you to link your "secret" pictures.

... I think I've disrupted the DMZ enough for today, yes.

2:09 PM
Nice black dress, earrings, purse, high-heel shoes.
Oh, I was sexy as hell.
I made out with pretty much every girl in that party.
and one dude
For one night, I felt young. I felt like a 20 year old.
Next morning, however, not so young.

way to kill chat
now get out
*points at the door*

2:27 PM
@Adnan I don't know why you're asking me. I didn't vote for anything to go to SO recently. It's probably just what the majority chose.

@Iszi - is it not whatever the last voter chose?

It's always majority's choice, unless a moderator votes.

@AviD - I'm having trouble with my current employer. They actually expect me to take the holidays I'm entitled to. Which means I have to take 3 more weeks off than I am used to...
@FEi - ahh, thanks

If multiple options have the same vote count, the earliest choice wins.

@RoryAlsop You sound like Sheldon.

2:36 PM
That's probably all detailed on meta where I could have read it had I not been lazy, right?

@RoryAlsop Probably.

:-)

@RoryAlsop European Metaltech Tour!

@Terry - well, holiday is confusing. And my brain gets all empty. I quite like Rory's idea though

I think you meant "more" empty
*hides*

2:40 PM
hey, if anyone in here downvoted my answer on the executive laptops, can you check and see if my edit fixed it. I spotted what I think was the problem in my answer. (Silly me forgot to clarify that I was thinking of offline attacks, not persistent compromises when talking about what a VM offers)

wow, even mods sometimes go "why teh downvotes plz?"
my oh my this coffee is delicious

@Iszi True. Seems like that's what happened

@kalina it's natural to want to be able to improve an answer.

psh
everybody knows that all improvements should be made before the grace period is over, so there's no proof you edited the post
4

@kalina This is the first thing you said in this chat that actually made me laugh. Star-worthy.

2:45 PM
@Adnan everything you say in chat makes me laugh
one of those sad, uneasy little laughs
not completely sure if this is still a safe place to be little laughs

@kalina I'm glad I can provide laughter for your depressing life.

@kalina ha, ha,.... ha????

my life only started being depressing when I first met you
@AJHenderson exactly like this!
;)

40 mins ago, by kalina
you two should just get a room

@kalina Which only indicates to how weak your personality is. Weak enough to let me affect you.

2:47 PM
@Adnan my personality isn't weak, I just have to filter 99% of it to be even remotely acceptable amongst other people

@kalina Off-topic: Other people can duck themselves if you have to filter 99% of your personality to be accepted.
@kalina Even when you're annoying, I still find you nice.
Damn, that thing you said made me freaking angry

"that thing"?

> I just have to filter 99% of it to be even remotely acceptable amongst other people

that made you angry?
you have anger issues

@kalina It made me angry because... ahhh.. why bother.
@kalina Well, I'll bother. It made me angry because it's annoying to hear that someone is being oppressed so much that they have to hide 99% of who they are.
I don't like that happening. Even to you.

2:51 PM
sure sure
I'm the victim

@kalina sigh
@kalina Do you really not see that I'm trying to sympathize with you? Are you incapable of understanding that some people on some occasions under some circumstances can actually be on your side?
Are you completely convinced that the whole universe is out to get you?

@Adnan when you protect 99% of yourself (if that number is accurate) then, yes, someone is generally convinced the universe is out to get them

@AJHenderson not always true

or atleast that most of it wouldn't like you if you didn't

and here's me trying to avoid all the serious conversations

2:58 PM
@kalina wait, does that mean you'll leave the DMZ if we make it all serious conversation all the time?
(oh wait, so would everyone else)

ha

@AJHenderson Even if you're a a combination of neo-Nazi, baby-eater and Al Qaeda supporter, all at the same time, I'm sure you'll find some people who aren't out to get you.

the DMZ? Serious conversation?

@Adnan unfortunately the people who are out to get you would be armed with predator drones and hellfire missles
but I agree with Adnan that it is unfortunate when people feel like they have to shut themselves off

@AJHenderson Especially when the person is delusional enough to victimize themselves almost all the time.

3:01 PM
and there are very few people who I've ever really wished would leave a chat or stop participating, and most of them ended up banned by the hands of others eventually
(which is to say, I don't actually wish anyone in this room would leave, even if a joke sometimes calls for alluding to it)

@AJHenderson I share a similar opinion. If I see someone I wish they're not here, or I actually dislike, I wouldn't engage them at all.
It's just difficult for some people to accept that there are times for sarcasm, jokes, and seriousness.

@Adnan it's also hard to figure out what people mean in text over the internet without context of body language and tone
hense why I occasionally make sure to spell it out

@AJHenderson Problems really arise when the misunderstanding stretches far after "spelling it out". At that moment, you realize it's not just misunderstanding, it's actually lack of understanding.
@AJH Anyway, how's VP.SE moderation going?

pretty good
migration is pretty much done now

@Adnan I am not delusional

3:06 PM
still trying to figure out our third new moderator
and already found two spammers that had been missed in the past
one looks hopeful to reform, the other I'm less confident in

@AJHenderson I fall victim to this a lot... I'm very... animated, my text doesn't fully portray what I'm saying

but obviously can't really say more than that here (as far as problem troubleshooting goes)

@kalina From what I've seen more often you're not properly reading the intent of what other people say.

@ScottPack that may well be the case

@kalina but to be completely blunt, I'd rather never tell a joke than actually hurt someone's feelings

3:09 PM
@kalina If I may be honest, that is indeed the case the vast majority of the time when it comes to conversations with you.

@kalina In this chat room, at least, I don't think I've ever seen you singled out in any negative way.

@AJHenderson I will tell a joke with the intent of not hurting somebody and if it does hurt them I will apologise and fell bad about it forever
@ScottPack and I never said anything to make it seem like this was the case

I think that's the case with pretty much everyone in here

there is a reason this is my current most active chat room

@AJHenderson Only two spammers. That's a good thing :D

3:10 PM
@AJHenderson yeah, I like this room and the people in it

That's because we're the reasonable people of StackExchange.

the reason the DMZ works so well is that I honestly think we have a bunch of very nice and very funny people

Except for @Adnan.

even adnan and simon

That guy's a doucheweasel.

3:10 PM
because they'd rather find the funny side rather than assume the worst

I've never, ever, ever, felt that I was hurt by anything @kalina said (or anybody else here, for that matter).

there are other channels on the network where I'd have already been accused of starting an argument just by us having this conversation

Also, I've never ever thought @kalina (or anybody else) is actually being intentionally mean to me or anybody else.

that's why I'm here, chatting away, without even wanting to use your horrible little site about cryptography and not sharing your email address

@kalina Woah woah woah. There's a whole other site for those crypto weirdos.

3:12 PM
are you saying that your site is actually just about not sharing your email with people?

eway no alktay boutaway ryptocay

Meh, my email is pretty trivially constructable.
Hell, it's in my profile!

@kalina I think our issue here is that you do indeed think some of us are targeting you.

my e-mail is my name

I hope I'm misreading your texts

3:13 PM
it doesn't even need to be in my profile

@Adnan oh no, you've totally got it wrong if you think I have an issue with anybody in here

36 secs ago, by Adnan
I hope I'm misreading your texts

@Adnan Or if you're adequately tattooed maybe you're misreading our sexts.

@kalina No, it's also about how to hack into your own Facebook account/server/phone since you've forgotten your password.

@AJH - and my email is my name. It's great not having to hide. Except for the spammers. And recruiters. And...

3:14 PM
@Xander though most of those are VTC:off topic :)

NSA, President, Bomb, Targeted Attack, Weapons of mass destruction, Obama, Murder, Nuclear weapons, Nukes, Cake

@RoryAlsop I have multiple domains, I'm screwed by spammers either way

Oh, we're also about watching what other people are doing.

@ScottPack I like watching what @RoryA is doing
After he voluntarily gave me his address

@Adnan That depends on the time of day. Trust me.

3:16 PM
I made a decision a long time ago I'd rather deal with filtering out the crap and have people that should be able to find me find me, since the people I don't want to find me are going to do so anyway

I was rather disappointed to hear that I honeymooned just a couple of miles from @RoryA and we never had beers.
@AJHenderson When I got involved in SE that's where I went too. I wanted my name out there and accessible for personal branding purposes.

for me it was my involvement with GameCube Cafe
and that started my online persona

@AJHenderson Indeed. I made that decision a week ago when I put my email on my Sec.SE profile

I spent nearly 15 years online before I decided to use my proper name. Phaw.

if you google me, I'm actually one of the top results for Google. I have the misfortune of sharing the name of a moderatly successful voice actor and a somewhat famous physics professor
so I don't completely dominate the search results, but I'm most of them

3:18 PM
> if you google me, I'm actually one of the top results for Google
Wow, quite the achievement!

@AJHenderson I get you, man. I share a name with a published guitar instructor, an English book buyer/reviewer, and the preferred brand of air tanks for firefighters.
I've occasionally gotten on the first page, but it's rough.

oh sweet, my photography site now has me beating the physics professor again

It doesn't help that there are 2 other people with my name in infosec.

I'm now third again
when wiicafe shut down, I dropped to 5th
IMDB and wikipedia for the voice actor beat me

@ScottPack Oh, you reminded me.

3:21 PM
but I now beat him for the first result in image searches :)

I hate the other Adnan xxxxxx
There are 10s of them
God damn it!
A very accomplished doctor, a famous entrepreneur, a military spokesman in Jordan

@kalina are you also known as dobalina?

@AJH - I'm all of the first page of results on a google search, and a good portion of the next 2 pages
Which is why I thought it was funny to ask that question at Christmas

@RoryAlsop Alsop is a much less common name it seems.

Especially in Scotland

3:23 PM
perhaps Rory is secretly the highlander

@RoryAlsop Which means no other Rorys

20:52 -!- dobalina [~dobalina@gateway/tor-sasl/dobalina] has joined
          #stackoverflow

Heh - there can be only many Rories

that is weird though, pictures from ajhenderson.com made it to the image search results on Google, but ajhenderson.com isn't in the first page of results for AJ Henderson

@RoryAlsop See, we could have gotten that answer but the site proposal was taken down for spam.

3:25 PM
@ManishEarth What's that?

@Adnan IRC

@Adnan irssi
when I saw that I first thought it said "kalina"
And this dobalina uses tor

Interesting. On the plus side "scott pack security" is a page full of me. I also found where, apparently, I gave an interview.

@ManishEarth Interesting
@ScottPack What's up with everybody having results for them using their name?!

@Adnan Do you even personally brand, bro?

3:27 PM
@ManishEarth #stackoverflow on what network?

@kalina freenode

gay

@ScottPack Using my full name, I can't find myself int he first 2 pages of Google

@ManishEarth does freenode do host spoofing as part of the ircd?

@kalina Hey, I'm usually on irc.mozilla.net. I have a couple of freenode rooms open, that's all
dunno
I have a mask on freenode, iirc

3:29 PM
There are two politicians with my very same name

Ok, this is proof enough. I don't recall giving this interview but I'm fair positive this proves it was really me, when talking of DNS
> You can think of it like a big honking phone book.

so It is impossible to build a brand against them...

I can live with masks

Manishearth [manisheart@wikipedia/Manishearth]

@kiBytes Senator Bytes?

3:29 PM
xD

@kalina Dunno how you would go about getting one, though. I got my mask from Wikipedia.

@ScottPack Hehehehe... yup, sounds like you

@ScottPack xD

speaking of branding, is it bad that one of the criteria I have for naming my kids is that I have to be able to get their domain?

Yes

3:30 PM
No, that's fine
dflkasjflkj-AJ.com
A bit hard to pronounce though

I was thinking they may have the middle name .info

@RoryAlsop Do you keep track of who you've spoken to and when, if it was published? I make sure to track all my conference sessions for my CV, but not much of anything else.

@kalina - masks...you have seen my band, haven't you?
@Scott - I try to, yes

Speaking of...I wear your pin on the shoulder strap of my messenger bag. Today was the first time someone's asked about it.

excellent! Oh - we have new merch for 2014 - I need to look at sending out some little packs. I'll work out a batch of goodies and see who is interested.

3:36 PM
@RoryAlsop no
@ManishEarth it's fine, I'm in holland

@RoryAlsop you know, that reminds me, I don't think I ever have actually gotten around to listening to any of your band's music

I'm also dancing with you and getting ignored

I should really probably do that some time

I find this unacceptable, but c'est la vie

@kalina - www.metaltech.me

3:37 PM
@kalina Wait, what? How long have you been in this room?

especially the Gallery and Video pages :-)

@AJHenderson I think my favorite song of theirs is Kommittment.

also - @dancing with who? me or @Manish?

@Xander trick question?
@RoryAlsop you didn't post a url, too much effort

21:05 * Flyk dances with Manishearth
21:06  * Manishearth pokes Flyk
21:06  * Flyk purrs
21:06 < Flyk> hey! stop poking him! this isn't facebook
21:06 < Manishearth> lol
21:07 -!- ndrei [~avo@83.142.149.227] has joined #stackoverflow
21:07 * Flyk pokes all the people
@RoryAlsop

3:38 PM
okay.... metaltech.me
there you go
@Manish - I don't even. Wat?

@AJHenderson Or Kontrol. I really dig the sound of that one.

@RoryAlsop #stackoverflow, Freenode IRC

Kontrol is good fun

now I have to re-learn how to set up irssi
it seems like an awful lot of effort

The best one to play is This Kiss - it is cracking on stage

3:39 PM
irssi? bitch-x!

Especially when we get big stages, like at festivals - we can jump off them for the big crescendo

@kiBytes BitchX? pff, mIRC

@RoryAlsop Since shifting to Pandora I've not been hearing your guys stuff. There was one of those that I always thought I liked until I heard it again.

@kalina shame on you

@Scott - have a look at the new vid on our videos page - one of the film guys did a quick 50 minutes to edit a cool snippet
@Scott - oh, and now you know you don't like it :-)

3:41 PM

Anyone ever encountered an issue on Linux with printers where the drivers are installed and the printer is recognized but stuff isn't coming out of the printer?

@RoryAlsop It's weird, yeah. I'll hear it and remember, "Oh yeah, I don't care for this one." then 5 minutes later will have gone back to thinking that I do.

@TerryChia That's not a Linux issue

@TerryChia the question should be in negative "haven't any of you encounter this issue in Linux..."

clever and sneaky - must figure out how we did that

3:42 PM
It's called "broken printer". A common malady :p

@RoryAlsop That's a big ole 500 error.

@ManishEarth Hehe.
This damned Canon printer is effing annoying though...

@TerryChia Yes, that's called printing. You'll need to perform an OS reinstall and try again.

@Scott - dammit. What did I break now

Most of my coworkers uses that joke with me. "Yes, in Linux is easy, isn't it kiBytes?" just recompile the kernel and...

3:44 PM
people call you kiBytes in real life?

...

I thought they called you Congressman Bytes?

Master Bates
2

ok ok
I'm done for today =)
16:45 here. I am going home!

@RoryAlsop you fixed it

3:45 PM
I hate you

c u!

BYE
DIE IN A FIRE

hey rory, did you see my ping in Cutting Room

@kalina Oh, look. A fire.

I will try to remember that @kalina =)

3:46 PM
@FEichinger second in two days

@kalina Really, I missed one?

@FEichinger yes
you don't pay attention to me anymore

Tsk!

A competent programmer would have automagically detected that and updated the counters.

I would expect nothing less
"A competent programmer" wouldn't have used PHP to write it
2
*runs away*

3:47 PM
Troof.

@kalina Screw you.

@FEichinger .oO( waiting )

@kalina WELL GET OVER HERE THEN.

hang on, somebody is wrong on the internet
actually I can't be bothered to put that much effort into it

user58869
what is "QOTW Author Selection"?

user58869
3:52 PM
was there a link with more info to click, i closed the thing already

user58869
can i bring it back?

user58869
I'm refering to a notification that just popped up in the browser saying that "QOTW Author Selection" was starting soon or something

user58869
i just closed it as soon as i saw it without thinking to try and click on the text

nah - it's a reminder to the community to write posts for our blog
there is a meta post on it
the regulars tend to be the core bloggers @ton
it's just we have slipped a bit since October-ish
yep
I don't know how to do that :-)
I just chase people to try and get them to draft posts. Then the editor group review and publish
This place holder was invaluable back when we first started, but nowadays the ones who want to write standalone posts do, and the QotW just kind of rolls along
