@djsmiley2k The only true requisite is curiosity and the desire to figure things out. For Windows there is always WINE(www.winehq.org) and mingw-w64 as a cross compiler. OWASP has local chapters (owasp.org/index.php/OWASP_Chapter) and Security B-Sides are afordable local conferences.

Often academic research and exclusive conference papers are available free online.
