So I'm trying to do recruiting and the other side perspective is that posting on Careers.SE gets less than great candidates to apply. Apparently candidate search is even more expensive.

bob
Hey guys! I'm currently learning buffer overflows (thats my objective). I'm not that great with the concept of buffers etcetc (I know how they work but could not write a buffer overflow). So, I was wondering where I could start to learn this? Any websites, books, etc ? Thanks

@JeffFerland On one hand, more people see it. On the other...
(also, its just as frustrating from the other end of the job hunt ;p)

12:16 AM
@RoryAlsop I don't like AdHominem's comment. Even if it's off-topic, I don't think we should insult people unless they're next-level stupid/trolling :x
This is fantastically disgusting. It's so decadent.
AMERICAN food safety inspectors have stood by their ban on mimolette cheese being imported to the US, labelling it “disgusting, putrid and decomposing – and totally unfit as food”
Okay, remind me not to google how my food is made

@MarkBuffalo wat

@MarkBuffalo why remove the sucuri link? It's a valid scanner?

"The Isigny Sainte-Mère Normandy cheese cooperative sold 60 tonnes of the orange cheese to the US last year and said that the mites were no danger to humans and that no study had shown they could cause allergies. It said this was especially true because people cut off the rind and did not eat it."
WTF I JUST ATE IT
@schroeder I will fix that, sorry

@MarkBuffalo Cheese as a concept is pretty disgusting
But as an execution it's totally tasty

It is, but I ate the rind... and I'm not supposed to
I think I'm dying

12:29 AM
@MarkBuffalo Ipecac

It's too late
don't cry for me, David... I've lived a medium life.

Was I supposed to be crying?

yes='[

Oh. I wasn't
Woah you can use the google authenticator with OpenSSH?

@MarkBuffalo If milk is mouldy then it is cheese; if it is rotten then it is yoghurt.

12:35 AM
@DavidFreitag Sure you can. PAM module.

@JeffFerland I did not know that. :D

@MarkBuffalo YOU ARE FONNA DIEEEEEEEE
@ThomasPornin I <3 rotten milk then

Now if I could get a working implementation of U2F, I'd be delighted.

@JeffFerland Yeah I see

... and I know Google has a working implementation. Share it you bastards!

12:38 AM
@JeffFerland So yubikey for ssh
(or something similar)

@DavidFreitag That's actually easier because it doesn't require client side modification.

@JeffFerland heh, waiting on my yubikey.... ;p
(ordered it in october. I think they completely lost my order until I gave them a poke last week)

@JourneymanGeek I've got two of the NEO and decided to opt for adding a 4 to the stable since they enabled touch-to-GPG

@JeffFerland And the authenticator pam module does?

12:39 AM
@JeffFerland got one of the github ones

@DavidFreitag No, not for the TOTP. Just for U2F.

@JourneymanGeek Do you know anything about Mimolette?

@MarkBuffalo heard of it, yes
Could be worse

@JourneymanGeek I don't know if I'm having a reaction to the rind, or a panic attack

Probably the latter
Casu marzu (also called casu modde, casu cundídu, casu fràzigu in Sardinian, or in Italian formaggio marcio, "rotten cheese",) is a traditional Sardinian sheep milk cheese, notable for containing live insect larvae (maggots). Although found mostly in the island of Sardinia, the cheese is also found in the nearby Corsica, where it goes by the name of casgiu merzu. Derived from Pecorino, casu marzu goes above and beyond typical fermentation to a stage of decomposition, brought about by the digestive action of the larvae of the cheese fly Piophila casei. These larvae are deliberately introduced to...

12:46 AM
That looks fucking disgusting

@MarkBuffalo panic attack

Give me some.

though...
The flour mite, Acarus siro, a pest of stored grains, is one of many species of grain and flour mites. An older name for the species is Tyroglyphus farinae. The flour mite, which is pale greyish white in colour with pink legs, is the most common species of mite in foodstuffs. The males are from 0.33–0.43 millimetres (0.013–0.017 in) long and the female is from 0.36–0.66 mm (0.014–0.026 in) long. Flour mites contaminate grain and flour by allergens and they transfer pathogenic microorganisms. Foodstuffs acquire a sickly sweet smell and an unpalatable taste. When fed infested feeds, animals show...

@JourneymanGeek vomits

@DavidFreitag should I unoneboxthat?

12:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek Nah
> You will find the hostname you have to use in /var/lib/tor/hidden_service/ssh/hostname. You also have to configure the client to use Tor. For this, socat will be needed.
Heheh, interesting. cc:\ @ThomasPornin @Ohnana

> Casu marzu is created by leaving whole Pecorino cheeses outside with part of the rind removed to allow the eggs of the cheese fly Piophila casei to be laid in the cheese. A female P. casei can lay more than five hundred eggs at one time.
> The eggs hatch and the larvae begin to eat through the cheese.[5] The acid from the maggots' digestive system breaks down the cheese's fats,[5] making the texture of the cheese very soft; by the time it is ready for consumption, a typical casu marzu will contain thousands of these maggots
...................................
how do you come up with this shit
> Because the larvae in the cheese can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in) when disturbed,[2][9] diners hold their hands above the sandwich to prevent the maggots from leaping.
ok..........

@MarkBuffalo It was an accident. Someone left the cheese out and let the flies land and lay eggs. A few days later someone said "Ah well I better try this..."

LMAO
Yeah, I thought so too

@MarkBuffalo vomits

blames drunkeness

12:51 AM
@DavidFreitag I'm sure they'll make a new cheese with that. :/

> Some who eat the cheese prefer not to ingest the maggots. Those who do not wish to do so place the cheese in a sealed paper bag. The maggots, starved for oxygen, writhe and jump in the bag, creating a "pitter-patter" sound. When the sounds subside, the maggots are dead and the cheese can be eaten.

Milbenkäse ("mite cheese"), called Mellnkase in the local dialect and often (erroneously) known as Spinnenkäse ("spider cheese"), is a German specialty cheese made from Quark and cheese mites's feces. Historically, the cheese was produced in the Saxony-Anhalt/Thuringia border region of Zeitz and Altenburg districts; today it is produced exclusively in the village of Würchwitz, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The traditional method of making Milbenkäse, which dates back to the Middle Ages, was nearly lost by 1970, with only the elderly Liesbeth Brauer knowing the technique. Local science teacher...
Bugshit cheese.

@JourneymanGeek Mimolette is essentially bugshit cheese
The flour mites defecate to death on top of the cheese

12:53 AM
lol

@ThomasPornin I wonder if using socat as suggested here will cause any problems because of the weak OpenSSL config

@ThomasPornin Do you like blue cheese?

@DavidFreitag The DH parameters issue with socat impacts only usage as a SSL server. Here, it seems to be a SOCKS client, i.e. not a server and not SSL either.
@MarkBuffalo Yes.
If it is good, of course.
Bad blue cheese is bad.

@ThomasPornin Have you tried Roquefort?

@ThomasPornin Ah, so running as a client.

12:59 AM
@MarkBuffalo Of course. I even find some here, in Québec.

TRON stands for "TLS 1.3, Ready or Not" and we mean it. You miss this workshop, we'll put something crazy in TLS 1.3 just to mess with you.

It is one of the kinds of real cheese that can travel long distances (probably because it knows how to fight back).

@ThomasPornin I've only tried blue cheese once... at wendys, when they had a blue cheese sandwich. I'm not sure if it was really blue cheese, though. It was really good
We now have Roquefort at Costco, along with Mimolette
these cheese have been banned here for quite some time

Roquefort can be melted to accompany pasta. It is a simple and good meal, but it can be tricky to do properly because it has a tendency to separate into two distinct phases.
@MarkBuffalo Cheese cannot be bad, it is so full of life !

@ThomasPornin Yea :D

1:03 AM
@ThomasPornin Yeah, full of maggots. vomits

Cheese also doubles as an efficient repellent for Brits.
3

Those stiff-assed brits

Who's Phil guimond
@ThomasPornin they do produce Stilton
Which is similar to roquefort

@ThomasPornin mmmm roquefort ... with morels and chive .... shuddup now I'm hungry LOL

@TildalWave Would this be chive spread?

@MarkBuffalo anything you want, spread, on pasta, pizza even, it's wonderful everywhere

Lucas, that'll be meh

it could probably even be made as pesto, but haven't tried that yet

Dude I'm sooo freaking excited

Didn't mean to add so many people... frigging linkedin.

1:13 AM
LOL

I clicked a blue button hoping it should show me people I may know
And it added 20 people...

@MarkBuffalo ADD ALL OF THE PEOPLE? OK!

I tried to undo all the adds
but no time at work

Nah, no backpedaling
God twitter is so much better with autoplay disabled

1:26 AM
So mark I confirmed our link

Danke
Looks like you're a big-ass german dude
Like 7'48"

Naw, he's not that tall
Also, not german.

@JourneymanGeek Seems like a lot of folks in here know each other

@MarkBuffalo ALS bucket videos man

I've only met @DavidFreitag
@DavidFreitag Haha

1:32 AM
@MarkBuffalo No seriously Sec.SE did a bunch

@MarkBuffalo Oh, @LucasKauffman is currently local to me
as is @TerryChia
And we did lunch ;p

Q: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Videos

Lucas KauffmanThis is the archive for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenege Videos made by our members.

cc:\ @MarkBuffalo

@DavidFreitag Didn't that turn out to be a scam?
@JourneymanGeek That's cool!

@MarkBuffalo Didn't what...?

@DavidFreitag I may have misheard, but on reddit I read the guy who started the ALS bucket challenge ended up taking the money and running, or something
Or barely giving anything to ALS research

1:34 AM
@MarkBuffalo Taking... what money...?

you had to donate money to research

Yeah donate it directly, not to some dude

I forgot specifics

2:10 AM
you know... i just realized something

What's that?

you know this whole "i don't vaccinate my kids because vaccines give kids autism" fad that's been going around

Yeah?

what if that's the single most deviously epic troll that human kind has ever seen

It probably is
But the guy who fabricated that research lost his license

2:12 AM
Step 1: Have kids
Step 2: Refuse to vaccinate them under some ridiculous guise
Step 3: trollface.jpg
@MarkBuffalo if he even had one

@DavidFreitag Step 4: survival of the fittest?

@MarkBuffalo s/fittest/vaccinated

Humans have done fine without vaccinations for many thousands of years.
They just tended to have died off en masse at various points in history... but still, they did fine.

define "fine"

@DavidFreitag The human race still exists. Victory, amirite?

2:17 AM
@MarkBuffalo I simply cannot count the survival of the human race a "victory" while Justin Beiber still walks among us.

Q: If there is a fair way handshake secret?

J.OdeIf there is a fair way handshake secret key ? I mean such way that it doesn't favour none of site.

Flag the question and the "answer" imho

Imbeciles at McDonald's
How difficult is "bun"->"meat"->"cheese"->"meat"->"cheese"->"bun" ?

Q: Why do people post questions on here they can easily google an answer for?

SnipercatzI'm honestly being serious. It's just not on this forum either. Why do people put in the time and effort to post a question they can simply google the answer for? Posting their question on a forum like this takes more time than it would to google the answer, so why do people do it? It only fu...

VTC
@DavidFreitag Fast food competency varies depending on which state you're in, imho... and probably which area of that state...

@MarkBuffalo There's a McDonald's literally five miles from the one I went to which is so much better
@MarkBuffalo hahaha wtf?

I hate when they get my order wrong, but I always go back in and politely ask them to fix it. They're always graceful

2:21 AM
My order is too simple
2 plain burgers and a medium fry

Mine is meat+cheese+onions+bacon. I often get it smothered in ketchup and mustard, both of which I hate.
Mustard tubers on the other hand, are delicious.
@DavidFreitag Like... no cheese?

@MarkBuffalo like nothing but "meat" + "cheese" + "bun"
I get home and put BBQ sauce on them

That... how do you mess it up? :(
Maybe they're so busy all day and their mind wanders.

@MarkBuffalo You forget what plain means and make a regular burger with nasty-ass pickles, ketchup, moose turds, and onions

ha.... ha.... ha......

5 hours later…
7:16 AM
@MarkBuffalo well, I havent had my coffee yet, if thats what you mean
Whoa. @Iszi's answer on that school/obscurity question is killing @ThomasPornin's answer.
@Iszi what kind of flowers do you like?
5

1 hour later…
8:59 AM
Morning

@RoryAlsop you should unite with them and fight off the English colonials

mornin' all

@RоryMcCune morning

9:22 AM
@MarkBuffalo -.-
today the weather has been amazing and I've been out in the sun all day rather than moping around feeling sorry for myself
and I have drugs to help sleep
so let's see if we can do a full night without interruptions

@LucasKauffman "avoid speaking too fast" LOL they're obviously not including Weegies in there then
@kalina yay for sunshine
although a friend of mine in Perth posted a screenshot that suggested it was 40C over ther!
that's waaaaaaay too hot
by like at least 20C

@RоryMcCune Tis tae het

@LucasKauffman aye man it's f'in (roastin'|billin')

@RоryMcCune Ah wish ah hud ice tae gallus doon mah baws

@LucasKauffman not quite the correct use of "Gallus" there

9:32 AM
@RоryMcCune Im using a translator

@RоryMcCune well yeah I'm not in perth right now, I'm on the other side near the funny shaped opera building but it's been 25-30 all day

@LucasKauffman Gallus generally means good
@kalina still too hot but not insane hot

no that's exactly the right temperature
anything below that is too cold

phhhhbt

It's quite funny here to see the weather reports, it's always the same: between 28 and 32 degrees :P

9:46 AM
yes but humidity

I'll stick to cold scotland

@kalina 66%

10:04 AM
eugh

10:17 AM
Morning DMZ

mornin'

@kalina I'm getting used to it though

@LucasKauffman so you going to Syscan this year? I see their schedule is up syscan360.org/en/schedule

@RоryMcCune no :( I wish I could, if you are let me know

@LucasKauffman heh no way I'd get a trip out that far unless I was speaking, and I've not come up with anything cool enough for Syscan!

10:25 AM
@RоryMcCune we should work a bit on that stuff of ours
but I forget about it eachtime

yeah . I keep meaning to do a kind of aftermath of my talk from last year on that topic, but at the moment when I get the inclination to write it's generally docker I end up doing :) speaking of which 1.10 is due out today UserNS and Seccomp Filters!

11:23 AM
hmm it seems that docker features are a means to kill chat... I'll need to remember that for future use!

I just saw my favourite example of XSS in a report. It was combined with stupid password storage in session, so it popped up a box saying "Your username is <username> and your password is <password>" with actual data.

...nice!

I thought it was a very good way of getting the point across

Should do the trick, yeah.

@Matthew indeed

11:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek Do you have experience with SIEM and/or IDS tools like snort or suricata?

Nope
I had to look up what SIEM was

@JourneymanGeek Aww. Am looking for a guy with experience in that area. :P

11:46 AM
@TerryChia isn't it just Splunk + some querying tools :op

(also, pardon any delays in replies. Now I'm dealing with the second most fun part of hardware failure...)

@JourneymanGeek electrocution?

What could be more fun than electrocution?
(Reinstalling)
and hopefully remembering to document the most annoying bits properly

@RоryMcCune Well, it's to fill a job opening. :P

@JourneymanGeek Juggling CPU fans is fun. Those things are sharp

11:52 AM
@Matthew the system that 'failed'...
well, I've gone through 2 so far and I'm sure its overheating.
I've put away the third until I got the replacement set up

@JourneymanGeek Have you tried turning it off and back on?

@TerryChia I couldn't turn it on so....
I'm afraid not ;p

@TerryChia Have you tried turning it off and leaving it off? That usually sorts heat issues...

The new one has a fan that should kick in, but its generally cooler

@JourneymanGeek Have you tried installing an antivirus?

11:54 AM
>_>

@TerryChia yeah you should get one of those one's with the great secure browsers

18 hours ago, by Thomas Pornin
@Zachiel Exactly. We are very good here at not providing HW/SW support.

@TerryChia I'm not asking about support. I'm bitching ;p
I've already gotten the dud machine swapped out.
wiil quitcherbitching then.

My missus just got a new PC with a M.2 boot drive. a little fiddly getting the BIOS to accept it as a boot device, but seems to work now...

12:11 PM
@RоryMcCune I had to look up what that was. I've not bought a laptop for ages

@Matthew they're nice v. fast SSDs and not that much more expensive than ordinary ones. I've got one in my desktop PC for running VMs off of

@RоryMcCune Desktop... Hmm... I remember having one of those...

@Matthew heh I tried running purely with a laptop for a while, but trying to do stuff like drive 2 27" monitors off them just gets painful
also I like to play the odd game and E:D works much better with decent hardware

@RоryMcCune I have a laptop, a Chromebook, and a tablet, for general use, and a PS4 for gaming. There is a desktop in the house, but not been used for ages

@Matthew my laptop mainly gets use when I'm on the road, PC + Tablet get used more in the house

12:21 PM
@RоryMcCune Work laptop goes on the road, and I usually carry either Chromebook or tablet with me in that case. Otherwise, I make do with my phone...

@Matthew for me work laptop is only if I have to ... so... heavy!

@RоryMcCune I'm usually on the road for work!

12:38 PM
@Matthew Are you also at work for the road?

@RоryMcCune If I was building a new system, I'd probably use one for boot.
I'd like to wait a while for the standard to be a bit more common

@JourneymanGeek yeah if I could be bothered I'd rebuild and move my boot disk off my old slow Samsung 840 Pro and onto the M.2
@JourneymanGeek for sure the support is a bit ropey at the BIOS level at the mo'

Presumably

and I wouldn't like to try it without a pretty new OS

I run windows 10 in most places anyway
Other than the home server, and that's currently a dualboot

12:42 PM
me too

@RоryMcCune By pretty you mean fugly windoze?

@Simon pls somon, what OS do you run that can boot off an M.2?

(By accident. It comes with an emmc which is really too small for me for most use ;p)

and don't say ubuntu unless you want laughed at for calling any other OS ugly

12:43 PM
@RоryMcCune Slackware?

I run fedora on my home linux box.

@Simon you... run slackware... s'yeah right :op

If I had a million dollars, I'd run Slackware.

@Simon so after your first track that you do in Collab with @kalina then?

o lawd
I'm not into pop like her.
(fkin_rekt)

12:44 PM
The naughties called...
You have a problem with pop whippersnapper?

@Simon you're just brave 'cause she's asleep

I'm always brave when it's about her.
erm wat

@Simon well you know what they say. "faint heart, ne'er won fair lady"

ô_ô
I don't know how to deal with the situation that just happened, a Windoze user just laughed at Ubuntu?
o lawd.lawd

@Simon RUN AND HIDE. ITS A SIGN OF THE END TIMES.

12:48 PM
Yeah no damn kidding.

@Simon why would anyone use Ubuntu... Xubuntu, lubuntu sure those are good
but straight ubuntu... eww
well for desktops anyway

pls you're talking about the desktop manager
who caressssss

I used to run kubuntu then I took an arrow to the knee

@Simon desktop users

It's the layer under it that matters

12:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah I tried that again in a VM it hung on boot 3 times... I deleted the VM

I switched over to fedora's kde spin. Partially cause my workplace at the time used centos.

@Simon for a client OS....
WAT
Client OS is all about the Desktop.

YOU'RE A CLIENT OS
I WANT STABILITY AND NON WINDOZE

Technically? No, not really.

SO I CHOSE UBUNTU
I would have chosen OS X if I could for work, though.

12:50 PM
@Simon with unity... a linux desktop, that hates customization

That's fine because I also hate customization.
I want it to be properly functional out of the box.

@Simon yeah I bet you love those Amazon ads on your start menu

I'm sure I could get rid of them if they really bothered me.

@Simon you haven't turned them of o_O

Nope.

12:52 PM
you do realise you're sending all your keystrokes on the start menuinto "the cloud"

Here, I just turned it off.
It took 3 seconds.

@Simon WOOP WOOP DANGER you have just customized your desktop
slippery slope there, soon you'll be choosing your own wallpaper

lulz
That I did, I got some creepy trees.

lol
"I see a desktop and I want to paint it blaaaaaaack"

Prettttyyyyy
I even removed the package unity-lens-shopping roro.
It's like if I knew how to computer.
o no it's her

12:54 PM
@Simon you might mock me but my bank manager loves me

@Simon You summon her, you deal with her

Mine loves me too because I'm financing a car.
@JourneymanGeek o pls help me on this one!!!

@JourneymanGeek that's so mean
u h8 me

They don't pay me enough as a mod.

12:55 PM
@kalina you're meant to be asleep

@kalina Not really.

I WANT SUMMER TO COME
The only problem will be to not sink monies into tuning.

@Simon Ms Glau probably agrees

"gotta save monies. o look an exhaust"

12:56 PM
@kalina ms who

summer?

@RоryMcCune I am but then the sp4 I fell asleep on decided it was time to fan
@Simon summer glau

summa who

@kalina d'oh, next time power down before sleep
@Simon tell me you've watched firefly/serenity?

n

12:57 PM
@Simon No power in the 'verse can stop her?
@RоryMcCune in desperation I have come up with a plan

@Simon wow, you've out-simoned yourself this time :op

I have limited the maximum cpu frequency when on battery power to 75%

NO ONE'S MAKING SENSE THIS MORNING
THEY'RE JUST QUOTING THINGS

and now it tells me I have 11 hours of battery life

@Simon It's a perfectly cromulent word where I come from...

12:58 PM
am like big smiles

@kalina yay!

and then I remember I'm on the wrong side of the planet, that I hate life, and I arrive here to immediately get mean and meaner start on me and that big smile turned upside down
