Morning!

@TildalWave I even willingly donated 1 reps to your cause for you
@DavidFreitag he officially reached rorystatus
@M'vy o/

@kalina How are you?

sleepy
I tried making a vanilla latte and instead I got coffee flavored vanilla drink
I don't know
let's just put loads of things in a mug and drink it

where is @Simon? @Simon get over here, I am in need of your services.

@M'vy how are you?

7:53 AM
I really need to be viciously nasty to someone.
My brother in law is being just a proper arsehole, and I am desperately trying not to engage with him in any manner... so I just have a lot of nasty response to let out.
That's why I need @Simon. Because I know he can take my abuse.

@kalina fine. It's friday finally

oh, it's Friday already?
fml I have things to do

@kalina still sounds delicious
but is it not a vanilla flavored coffee drink?

@AviD or you can just, you know, not engage at all?

@M'vy well, yeah, but I made the mistake and read it.
I am not currently at the required level of inner peace needed to just be fine with his douchery.
sometimes I am, not today.

8:00 AM
@AviD can't you just stare a some random xkcd for the necessary time to get there?

@kalina odd to think that our end of the week, is really your start of the week..

nah, not gonna do it today.

@RоryMcCune you may think it's odd but you're the one that works 5 days out of the 7, not I

ah yes, @RоryMcCune is in the room, one can tell by the inappropriate starring.

@kalina hey not all of us can be creative types :op

8:02 AM
It is my fault, of course, for putting the comments there in the first place.

@AviD phhhbt @TerryChia and yourself, I would suggest, are the kings of suggestive starring

yeah but I didnt star my own post ;-)

@AviD yeah but it was starbait..
almost as bad as @kalina and @RoryAlsop yesterday and their "Big knob" conversation

see? I didnt even realize that. That's how bad a state I'm in.

@RоryMcCune that wasn't starbait

8:04 AM
@RоryMcCune damn, I missed that. Thankfully.

@kalina phhhhhhhhhhhhbbbbbbbbbbbbbtttttttttttt

legitimate discussion about a definitely non-trolling product: mackie.com/products/big-knob

22 hours ago, by kalina
@RoryAlsop oh no my big knob broke... too much use I guess?
Aug 24 at 15:46, by kalina
knob feel is very important
Aug 24 at 15:46, by Rory Alsop
@kalina there is a website that reviews audio and electrical hardware purely on the basis of knob feel

knob feel is extremely important, I spend enough time with my hand on it that it should feel nice

I could have done without that, but thanks

8:08 AM
it's like if you had a smartphone that didn't sit in your hands properly or felt weird to use
completely real issues that should be discussed at length
I keep looking at the product page for the tesla s
I think the only thing stopping me from ordering one at this stage is the size of the waiting list and the lack of infrastructure
well that and the short range

Go to wired, they discuss things like how a phone feels in your hand a length over there.

I would probably get the baby one though due to the large difference in price

And fonts...they loooove fonts...or hate them, sometimes I cant tell. Whatever they like talking about them them at length.

and the fact it will likely have been superceeded by something better within a few years
right, less fallout shelter and more getting dressed and doing of stuff

Porsches...they will be super seeded by porsches.
they are in the same price range..they are better

8:13 AM
Morning

@TheJulyPlot I doubt that very much

Was at a charity dinner last night and there were many expensive porsches and ferraris (only two that would beat mine to 100mph, admittedly) but they were all outclassed by the guy who turned up in his own helicopter...

for starters, they're barely comparable - one is purely electric and the other is powered by dead beings

mmm...to be fair, i have never driven either..I just wanted to sound cool and manly

@RoryAlsop well that's the way to do it really, isn't it

8:15 AM
The dinner was odd - it raised about £150k for a local children's charity, but seemed to be p[populated by sexist, racist, bigoted Victorian-era old-boys-club idiots. So I'm conflicted

"my car is faster than your car" turns up in a plane

Would happily have slapped every moron there, but the money raised will do a lot of good

@RoryAlsop I think you meant "boys"
all of the other words were wasted effort

no. I don't categorise me in that grouping

well no because you're a man.
I assume

8:18 AM
Some time ago, yes.... but even back in the Paleolithic, when I was a boy, I also was not a sexist racist bigot

@RoryAlsop Helicopters are cools if you are rappelling (or abseiling pick the regional variation you prefer) from it while still wearing a suit, James Bond like. Or else, it's just showing off.

@RoryAlsop yeah, and I'm sure your son, who is not quite yet a man, is either.

it was a very cool helicopter. Aside from having what I assume was the owner's nickname down the side
@AviD - correct. Aside from the occasional teenage grumpiness, he's a nice guy. As are many of the people I know
not all, admittedly, but I tend to avoid mixing with that sort

me too
that's why I'm single

@RoryAlsop most sane adults do
well, when they can avoid their brother in law, anyway
though if he had a helicopter - or had any inclination to donate to a charity - that would at least be ONE redeeming quality he would have.

8:24 AM
so £5000 for a pair of signed football shirts: Pele and Maradona
and then £21k for dinner for 10 with Gordon Strachan!
These people are football mad and cash-rich

but why

what
@RoryAlsop "these people" - doesnt that include you?
oh, and can I get a job in HR with RBS, too?

I can't stand football
and have children rather than cash

5k is very close to buying a H8000

It wasn't an RBS dinner - I was a guest of an audit firm

8:26 AM
ahh

@kalina - get a Tesla! get a Tesla! get a Tesla!

I suppose being able to charge 21k to eat with a few people is a decent gig

so you didnt have to front 21K just for dinner....

I might try that

hell I think that was more than my wedding cost

8:27 AM
@RoryAlsop I want to so much, if I actually do it'll only be the 70D so I can claim I'm sensible purchasing a normal priced car and can dispose of it but waiting list and lack of infrastructure

the football dinner was one of the auction prizes

to confirm my suspicions I'm going to borrow a roadster for a few days in a couple of weeks
hopefully that will put me off going electric for the time being but I doubt it

don't know what our table cost
I bid on a cheese and wine day (£200) and a spa day for two (£200) - they went for £750 and £7000, respectively!!!

jeez

I'm not even a league away from that league

8:30 AM
@RoryAlsop ah I thought that was the price for the charity dinner

yeeeeek. no

@RoryAlsop that better be a hella lot of cheese.
and that spa day better include a happy ending.

@RoryAlsop I can't say I'd drop 7k on a spa day tbh

you'd have liked the tech, though - each table had a bunch of Amazon tablets with a secret auction app that let you make bids, track current bids etc. And bids were posted on large screens

cool!
how hackable?

8:31 AM
@kalina - me neither. Even with the happy ending @AviD requested
@AviD - they booted into the app (we checked a few things to make sure) so you'd probably have to MITM the comms

hehe I didnt request it, just mentioned that if somebody is paying that much for the spa, somebody is getting screwed either way

It is a nice spa (Sheraton in Edinburgh have a rooftop spa) - and I could justify 200 squid for two people, as it was also for charity

@RoryAlsop I would require well equipped male slaves for the entire period of time before I'd even consider it
and by well equipped I mean able to carry all of the stuff I cba to carry

7000 for slaves...that is pure profit for their owners!

@kalina - tut tut tut ;-P

8:35 AM
maybe rent out a fire department instead
that might work better for me
because there is nearly always a fire where there is a concentration of heat
sometimes I wonder how I don't just spontaneously combust

nothing to do with wanting a bunch of firemen nearby...?

well, I suppose they could be related

Hey, are you just saying, "I'm so hot I need a fire department!"
lol

no ;p
tesla actually offer a "ludicrous" package for extra speeeeeeeeeeeeeed
"requires range upgrade"

ludicrous is the main reason I want one
have you watched the various test run videos
awesome runs against some serious sports cars - beats a lot of serious power in the 0-100 range

8:41 AM
videos, reviews, spoken to people who've driven one, etc
yeah well the fastest has a 3 second 0-100
wait do you mean km/h or mph

mph. I want to have a shot. I would miss engine noise, but I like the idea of just mashing the pedal to the floor, taking a breath, and being at 100 - mostly silently

I won't miss the engine noise because it will be replaced with music at a comfortable volume

fair enough :-)

I'm also not really "into" cars like you guys are, I guess

Morning

8:44 AM
salut

morning

I got tenants! Yay for extra income!

now you just need to enslave their minds and your tenants get promoted to minions

@kalina Shhhh. There is an (extremely low) chance that they end up reading that, that'll make it so much harder to do.

@Arperum yay! though I hope you are taking into account that it is not straight profit... having tenants means that you are a landlord, which means you have another job to do....
fix this, replace that...

8:48 AM
no it won't, it will make it easier

@AviD Yea, I'm just renting out a room in my house though. The FIx this, replace that scenario is stuff that I need to do anyway.

because like every other casual in the world, they'll "secure" themselves and then relax because they've "secured" themselves
thus making them less secure
and then you can move in with the real mind games

@Arperum not necessarily, depending on your contract of course... But yeah, it does make it easier

hypnotherapy tapes while they sleep
bright lights during the night
total darkness during the day
loud noises whenever they're asleep
cook for them every now and again but fill the food you make with MSG so it tastes significantly better than anything they cook
to reinforce that the world prefers you over them
obviously never consume any of that nonsense yourself

@kalina The part where I have a house and they don't is already a start.

8:51 AM
you have thought this through, I'm guessing...

@RoryAlsop only thought it through, I've certainly never tried it
there's definitely no proof since I sound proofed the basement
nobody can even hear the screams laughter anymore

this is cool:

@AviD Ah, yea, that type of joke.

♪ you clipped my wings and told me I would never fly again

9:56 AM
yep, still falling over Google's change of favicon

10:14 AM
super chatty in here
can barely keep up with the scrolling

shushh, I dont wanna miss anything

still haven't seen google's favicon. None of my tabs have favicons, actually
wonder why
maybe I set a config option years ago.

@RoryAlsop because you're still using Gopher?

maybe too many tabs
Ahhhh - gopher
no - I'm on current Chrome (but seriously considering going back to Firefox after t'other @Rоry's recommendation)

why would anybody willingly use Firefox

10:21 AM
Chrome is getting worse, FF is getting better again, and the alternatives suck

it's all about Microsoft Edge.

@kalina I'm on FF since some time this year I thin and my web experience has only improved

we need to agree on which combination of punctuation results in "sarcastic cheeky grin"

Chrome is still a lot better for debugging and such, but that also makes it a memory hog

the "memory hog" excuse is invalid

10:23 AM
And JS runs quite a bit faster on Chrome, but that isn't an issue for me

if you have so little RAM that running Chrome is an issue you need to either switch to mobile or get a new PC

@kalina how so?
@kalina I have 64 GB actually

so what's the issue?

just upgraded about a month ago from 32 GB

I have 16GB and have never had a memory issue

10:25 AM
@kalina I tend ho have many (like it can go over 100) tabs open, some with huge images in them,...

I frequently get near 100 tabs and have still never had any memory issues

try working with over 10,000 px squared images in Chrome, it gets really painful

example link?

ahhh - your space pix. I loved the re-coloured one you did last month

anything over at LROC really

10:26 AM
@TildalWave means nothing to me

I don't see the problem

Anyway, I'd frequently have a dozen of memory heavy pages open, say also Planetary Science Node at PDS Imaging Atlas
and so on
then of course a couple of VMs ...
my experience with FF is that it hogs at least half less memory than Chrome

well if you're running VMs then you should subtract the memory assigned and the memory required for your hypervisor from your "total memory" since that memory isn't available for the browser running in the host
I would still imagine you have more than 16GB and still imagine no matter how many of these images I open I won't see the problem
but whatevs

It also works pretty OK, I don't have any major complaints. Chrome really sucks for some things, like trying to send mono sound to the wrong channel for mono (as per spec) which then renders it inaudible on my rig because the sound card sticks strictly to spec
And I never really found out where the mixer was so I could fix that on my own
I did ask for documentation, no reply...
With FF I'd simply load the source code and check it out myself, if that had to be done

10:34 AM
did this just turn into an opensource discussion because I don't take part in those

heh no

good because there is no argument that will make me favor either in that particular subject

You know what, maybe now with memory upgrade I wouldn't run into memory problems with Chrome any more, but I just got used to FF now and I don't see any reason to switch back, everything works

primarily due to the subject not interesting me but also because the open source community is shite at providing decent audio software and the closed source community is shite at not pissing off their audio software purchasing customers
what with the steinberg elicenser and ilok dongles and all of the other nonsense I literally had to buy a USB hub just to plug in
and always on activation for the native instruments stuff
I no longer like the new Google logo
because the design is inadequate
on google.nl for example, the d in nederlands touches the e in Google
which is just ugly
although that looks like it may change because on google.com.au australia is in a different font/color/location

@kalina doesn't touch in FF :)))

10:45 AM
obviously a rendering fault in FF
interesting

The N in Netherland doesn't align with L in Google tho, and kerning is just off in the whole logo, as is the font strength between the G and the rest of it, because apparently new designer has no appreciation for perception

it only does it on the chrome default landing page and not if you actually browse to google.nl
not that I'm giving away that google detects my location as "in the netherlands"
definitely not a fail

The P for Polska does not align either..not that I care
or the F for France etc

nope it's just the logos on the default page when you open a new tab
obviously a half hearted effort

Oh that's just untidy! Letters of different words touching? I mean that's like your peas touching your mashed potato on your plate. And we can't have that!! :D
Anyway, what's wrong with DuckDuckGo? :)

10:59 AM
@TildalWave my OCD screams at me when I look at that picture
unless you're O&C you probably won't understand

The typography of the D's and the G weights the font to the left and makes me feel uncomfortable.
Also the duck in the picture looks smug

@TheJulyPlot yeah but it says "duck it!" on hover :))

Yeah I see what you mean, its like I might look smug, but I break society's norms by saying things like duck it.

exactly LOL

11:42 AM
@kalina 'cause it has some respect for your privacy, unlike chrome?

Windows 10 failed (again) to automatically reboot to install updates
no doubt if I started shutting my PC down every night it would complain about not being able to install updates for some other reason
@TheJulyPlot maybe that's why autocucumber is always changing my texts to duck it

11:58 AM
Or maybe your socially unconventional duck, who wants to turn the word duck into a verb!

quack

thought so...

who are you anyway?
I do not know who you are
are you NEW?
oh wow you're a new person who has been here for 19 days and has 323 reputation internet point things
hello

12:31 PM
@RоryMcCune Yikes.

Well im not new

@kalina sounds reasonable enough :)

New to here I suppose

not a binge drinking toddler are you?

no...im legal
although I may walk and talk like a toddler when binge drinking

12:41 PM
@TildalWave but I don't like most of those things!
that's like not having anything in common
o wait maybe that's the problem
morning @ManishEarth o/

they're an acquired taste ;D

you don't like toddlers or bing drinking?
i dont like toddlers either

@TheJulyPlot drunk search engines are never fun...

has you "bing drinking"?

12:42 PM
I don't drink, racing is boring unless you're driving, nobody likes Linux and I highly doubt anybody in here is interested in information security

Adi
Woohoo! Finally we can see the number of people we touched!

@kalina what about second world war history, he/she will be interested in that too I'd imagine

@Adi unlike before when you'd only know by the number of complaints?

waa..all the stuff you like is boring unless doing it well, or something
i am
i like all history

12:44 PM
the username is a bit of a hint

it is

@RоryMcCune I'm not interested in that

Adi
Those who don't know history are doomed to have a lot of sex

@Adi does that move you on a deep emotional level?

> If elected to moderator, I promise to build a wall. A massive firewall. I will keep StackExchange and Jeff out. And, I'll make them pay for it. They'll pay to host the firewall. I will make it happen. I can build firewalls. No one builds firewalls like me; and, no one else will build a firewall.

12:45 PM
@kalina what if it was a WWII game?

OH GOD HAHAHAHAHA

@RоryMcCune booooooooring
@ManishEarth late

sure
but its still funny

@kalina if it's not super fast paced or duff duff duff it's boring.. right? :op

Adi
@Adi what is emotional level?

12:46 PM
@RоryMcCune I'm not much of a spectator

@kalina more an instigator?

participant

Adi
@Manish Nice read

@RоryMcCune participant
@TheJulyPlot :)

@Adi yeah with people they forgot were no good

12:52 PM
participation is overrated what if you enjoy sitting at the side, being to shy to speak or join in, what if you enjoy the feeling of inadequacy and self loathing you have about yourself because you are to weak to muster the courage to say to simply hello?

what if you constantly write to when you meant too? :P

maybe some people enjoy that..I dunno, dont ask me I enjoy participating, that is why i am on a half baked javascript chat thingy talking to strangers
what if @TildalWave..what if!?

@TheJulyPlot strangers, we're not strange... well apart from @Simon and @AviD ... and @kalina and me and T'other Rory ... actually I take that back we are strange
