3:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek that's why we sold them the FN SCAR

@AviD Ohh, and the bullpup was scoped, which was awesome.

@Xander yeah exactly

Election ends in 4 hours. Ooo....it's all tingly
3

@Xander except it just zoomed forward instead of actually making you look down the scope

@ScottPack then stop touching it

3:01 PM
@LucasKauffman Yes, which made it even better.

@ScottPack is that 2nd letter supposed to be an "L" or an "R"?

Remember lads, if I win the election, I'll record myself eating a dozen of donuts.

@AviD Whichever.

I always find it funny how we are one of the major exporters of small arms globally, yet it's almost impossible to buy on here

we should have a DMZ CS game sometime.

3:02 PM
also a side note, the company is still 74% in the hands of the Walloon government and each year about 200 P90's are smuggled out of the factory in parts

@LucasKauffman thats why - all the good guns are sent out of the country, none left to buy

@AviD That's also my feelings about em
The SAR's heavier than an m16 but easier to crarry

@JourneymanGeek my laptop is heavier than an m16

they've done some really dodgy stuff in the past as well, like selling to Ghadaffi. Then when they realized he was shooting his own people, and received an official inquiry they just said "Here's a paper Ghadaffi signed where he promisses he wouldn't use it against his own people"

@AviD Looks like you no longer have a Macbook.

3:04 PM
@LucasKauffman wasnt that also HT's technique?

heh
CIS's less popular models...
ended up in the balkans

@Simon pls. M16 is incredibly light, but very bulky.

You... have a 7-lb laptop?

its like this huge piece of plastic.

3:05 PM
Holy crap

M16 is light
but balance is odd

@LucasKauffman hacking team

Are we being invaded by donuts with tiny ass dogs as their avatar?

@JourneymanGeek because its so long

and its a bit unwieldy to carry
yup

3:06 PM
@AviD ah yea, same technique

the galil, on the other hand, weighed a ridiculous lot, but was much smaller. A compact hunk of metal.
heh damn

@AviD My gosh man, what do you have? Even an old 17" Macbook Pro weighed only 6.6lbs.

lulz

@AviD same with the FN FAL

3:08 PM
@Undo so? an m16 weighs less than 2 pounds.
ah wait thats kilo

wikipedia says 7.18lbs
unloaded

@Undo also, my laptop is a 2009 17" dell with 9cell battery. damn heavy, but thats why I dont use it often anymore
@Undo well
it was lightweight compared to my galil
hell one of my clips weighed more than the whole gun
but thats okay, I was in artillery - we didnt need our guns, we needed to heft a couple of 70kg shells here and there.

lol
I'm a REMF ;p

@JourneymanGeek Really Energetic Mother F*** ?

lucas

3:12 PM
@JourneymanGeek hehe I like that term
wish I'd known it back when

@LucasKauffman: I'm a Reservist MT line storeman in a unit with no MT line.

@JourneymanGeek what's an MT line?

Maxim–Tokarev?

Your discussion about guns is lovely, we almost forget that the sole purpose of those is to murder people.

Motorised Transport

3:14 PM
@JourneymanGeek what does a storeman do?

@Simon: I've never shot anyone who didn't deserve it.

@Simon and, to make big noises. big noises boom.

@LucasKauffman: Mind stores.

dont forget the big noises.

(Sleep under desks)

3:14 PM
@JourneymanGeek so basically you sit on your ass all day?

yuuuup

@JourneymanGeek And to you, someone who deserves is anyone that your government told you to kill I assume?

@Simon one more comment like that and you can bet the Americans will serve you some freedom

They call me in for reservist? I pack a few books.

@LucasKauffman hehehe

3:15 PM
@Simon: I did not say that.
Damned plastic targets got what was comin to em.

@Simon f***ing hippy

@JourneymanGeek I did not say that you said that, hence why I've typed "I assume".
@LucasKauffman LOL

@JourneymanGeek I was surprised to learn you can actually be called as a reservist even after years to serve a few weeks

@AviD big boomy bang bang

I always wondered how that works with your job

3:18 PM
...4 Hours and counting...

@RoryAlsop In scottland they use swords right?

@RoryAlsop well, first the small boom, then the big boom

@AviD TWSS

well actually big boom then bigger boom
very small boom, then big boom, then a while later and 30km away very big boom

@LucasKauffman I guess so, but to paraphrase MJ - I'm a lover not a fighter :-)

3:19 PM
ah no this is hoow they do it in Scottland:

@LucasKauffman I had that, every year until last.

(actually, I did wear a sword for my wedding - at first, but then realised it caught Claire's dress, her train, a small child... so I removed it)
The sword, that it

@RoryAlsop TWSS

@LucasKauffman Tossing the caber
2
Lobbing the rock

@AviD how does it work with your job, who pays your wage? Is it thhe same wage as you would make when working?

3:20 PM
now you're just starwhoring
5

Hurling a rock with a chain on the end

@LucasKauffman yeah, ish - its a legal thing, so companies have to just accept it. There is the (equivalent of) Social Security that pays companies for their employees time, and the companies just pay the regular salaries as if nothing.
Or you can just take the pay straight from the Social Security, e.g. if you're not employed.
@RoryAlsop More like hurling a chain with two rocks on the end, amirite

@AviD so what do you then as a reservist? Watch the golan heights with your canon?

@LucasKauffman all kinds... gtg no, remind me to elaborate when I get back

@AviD @LucasKauffman I'd be careful that's him off to tell his moshad buddies that you're prying about too much....
:)

3:43 PM
Looks like Norway is determined to beat the idiocy of the Germany Music Rip-off organization (GEMA):
In Norway, if you publicly perform a recorded musical work where the performer has abandoned all rights by using CC0, or the artist simply declare that the recording is in the public domain, you are obliged to pay a levy to a solidarity fund for performing artists, managed by the collection society GRAMO. I doubt that performers expected (or wanted) this to happen. While (AFAIK) there are no similar legal hazard when CC0 is applied to software, these legal tools tend to lead to unexpected effects and OSI recognizes this problem and do not put them on their list of approved licenses. — Free Radical 3 hours ago

4:16 PM
Wow I just denied 4 edits from the same guy @Simon! All he did was remove the "Thanks"

@raz Vilican or whatevs guy?

raz
yup

@Simon I wonder if enough rejected edits does fully ban them from edits
I think it does - am looking for the post on it now

raz
@Simon It wouldn't annoy me so much if there weren't clearly other edits that could have actually improved the post.

yep:

Q: Too many of your edits were rejected, try again in 7 days

Mateen UlhaqFirst time I've got the following message on SO: Too many of your edits were rejected, try again in 7 days. Although, I have made ~50 accepted edits this day. I'm sure that should outweigh the ~5 rejected edits, right? My suggestion: bool allowEdit(USER u) { if(u.rejected * 5 > u...

hoping that also works on Sec.SE
> If (rejects - (approvals / 3)) >= 5, you will be auto-banned.

4:20 PM
@raz It is clear that he's just doing it for the rep.
@RoryAlsop I hope so too because he's super annoying.

raz
@Simon I feel like he might have gotten banned for the last week since I haven't seen him attempting any at all.

@raz Ohhhh that's true.
But in that case, didn't he understand that he was doing a bad job at editing?

This is why we need to make sure that we read proposed edits and reject if they don't work, otherwise this sort of thing keeps happening. I think people are now spotting his edits even before they see his name, as they are uniformly bad, and I've had to contact him already

raz
@Simon He too likes to live dangerously

oooooh - 3 hours to go!

4:22 PM
@raz Or he's an absolute donut.

raz
@Simon He's not even a donut, he's a donut hole

@RoryAlsop Did he reply anything?

raz
@RoryAlsop Exciting!

@Simon nope

@raz Shiiiiiit son.
@RoryAlsop Sigh.

raz
4:23 PM
@Simon I wear brass knuckles over my kid gloves.

Badass.

No, he isn't autoblocked from editing. Some of his edits have been approved - usually ones to remove 'Thanks'

raz
@RoryAlsop I remove the Thanks now that I have the privilege. I actually made sure my edits improved something under 2k

I've been complaining about this not too long ago: people are bad at reviewing suggested edits.
@raz Exactly.

raz
@RoryAlsop Maybe we should do the unveiling in a virtual reality extravaganza!

4:30 PM

omgawd election ends in 2 hours @@@
No you donut, it ends in 2 hours, 59 minutes and whatevs seconds.

@RoryAlsop try replacing every noun in his edits with the word "donut"

Anybody know how long from the end of the election until the results are out? (And yes, I know I could download the data, and go download and install the program, and crunch the numbers myself, but I don't wanna.)

raz
@etherealflux There wouldn't be anything to replace!
@Xander I assumed they were immediate... but I've never gone through an election.

@raz s/\w*/donut/g

@raz they are pretty quick, and at least one person in TL runs it independently to get a 2nd view (sometimes faster than the official one)

5:14 PM
@Xander Ping Gilles, he already knows how to run the evaluation program.
I wonder if SE uses a crypto grade PRNG to shuffle the votes

@CodesInChaos Yeah, I did it after the last ServerFault election, but that was on another computer, and I don't want to hassle with it again.

Of course they could simply sort them, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

so I found this in our main repository's commit history: "Everything. All of the changes ever made. WIP. Everything is super broken."

raz
@etherealflux Sounds like someone forked something terrible

@raz If you try to build it, the Jenkins server detonates

raz
5:29 PM
@etherealflux They warned you that it was super broken

It makes Windows ME look stable
Legend has it that no debugger can get past the main method before segfaulting

You're stable.

raz
@etherealflux The debugger itself segfaults?

@raz There is no escape
also
"Death Master File" is hardcore

@raz @etherealflux Speaking of debugger fun, I remember a story from a guy who worked on C++ team at Microsoft, specifically on the debugger. One of the things that they do to test, is that they actually do their day-to-day development using the latest nightly builds of Visual Studio. So he was explaining that a bug had been filed against the debugger, and he was having an..."interesting" time trying to debug the debugger while using the buggy version of the debugger to debug.

raz
5:41 PM
@Xander I think my mind just debugged

Debug overflow.

studenthackers.devpost.com <-- top technology used at Student Hackathons. Top Database tech .... you've guessed it..... MongoDB

@Xander Sounds like he needed some more cloud

@etherealflux This was back in the era before-cloud.

Yeah, they didn't have clouds back then.
Then, some dude decided "hey, it'd be cool if it'd rain, let's create clouds".

Q: How does a hash which contains algorithm to choose can be secure?

GugelhupfI was thinking about creating my own hash+salt function, something like sha1(password + md5(login)), then I read here (part 4) that creating it's own hash+salt function is a bad idea, because if the hacker retrieve database content and code he can understand the mecanism behind it. So I've read ...

So, I've just attempted to create a Microsoft account and received this wonderful error message: "Your password can't be longer than 16 characters."
Fucking dumbasses.

Yeah, that sucks. I commonly have passwords twice as long.

@Simon In older times the limit was 14.

6:20 PM
@ThomasPornin LOL

@ThomasPornin What? For a Microsoft account?

@Simon Pretty sure it's a joke, referring to LM hashes.

o

@Simon yeah that is some weird legacy crap right there...

Ah, the good old LAN Manager hash. One of the most amusing examples ever of what you get when you roll your own crypto.

6:36 PM
lucas no

@Simon lucas no what?

@RоryMcCune Just in case he decides to go full on "CAAAARRRRLLLL" again.

@Xander LM hashes are amazing
they're fractally terrible

@etherealflux I'm sure the team that came up with it was enormously pleased with how clever they were, as they made bad design decision after bad design decision.

I slept from 22:00 to 14:00.
Also, would anyone like an invite to the embedded systems beta?

6:46 PM
@DavidFreitag Oh, I so really need a night like that.

Agreed.

@Iszi Well, it all starts with being awake for 26 hours. Start with that and the sleep should be the easy part.

@DavidFreitag is this due to recovery from your broken leg?

@DavidFreitag I've done 48+ hour stretches and not been able/allowed to sleep so well.

@RoryAlsop No this is a regular occurrence

6:49 PM
Even when I had to go into hospital for an op, I slept for 2 hours after it because of the anaesthetic and then was wide awake

Probably the longest (if not best) sleep I had was after having 14 consecutive workdays, the last of which was 19 hours long.

@DavidFreitag I couldn't
I'd die

@Xander "So, to stop hackers, we'll split the password in two and hash it separately"

The worst part is I know I can survive on 4 hours of sleep

Slept for a solid day - literally 24 hours - after that one.

6:49 PM
"And then we'll go back to chugging bleach and vodka!"

@DavidFreitag You "can survive" on less. Just not too often.

If I sleep for over 8 hours, I know I'm ill, and something is wrong with me

@Iszi No, when I was still in college I would go weeks on 4 hours of sleep a night.

That doesn't sound healthy.

Because I would be working 40 hours a week on top of >20 hours of classes

6:50 PM
@DavidFreitag Oh yeah. 4 hours is pretty tolerable. It's less that's really tricky.

Even when I pulled the 3 consecutive months of 100hr weeks, I was still not sleeping over 6 hrs a night at the end of it. Was a bit tired, and a tad grumpy, but felt fine

With homework and projects and work, there just was no time to sleep.

And having a night of less, when you've had a lot of just 4, isn't good either.

You lads are not doing healthy stuff.
@RoryAlsop UNHEALTHY
@DavidFreitag UNHEALTHY

Now, for some reason, my brain sees it fit to keep me dead for no less than 12 hours per night.

6:51 PM
@RoryAlsop ~12x 100 hr weeks?! You win.

@Iszi UNHEALTHY

@Simon Your mom.

@Iszi Yeah, but those are 100 HR hours...

@Iszi how did you think he had enough time to be a mod. of all those sites....

@RоryMcCune TARDIS

6:53 PM
@Iszi that was the other option.. yes

@Adi It's not that difficult, just don't do that while it is plugged in, please.

@DavidFreitag TWSS?

@Iszi That's what Simon said.

@Iszi No, she would enjoy seeing someone get electrocuted.

@DavidFreitag She, being @Flyk?

6:55 PM

@Iszi I suppose that works.

@Iszi or lose, depending...

@RoryAlsop Oh oh oh, did something bad happen due to those insane hours?

It was the trigger for me to change jobs. Not because of the long hours, but because I was not seeing my kids at all

6:59 PM
o
That is one hell of a good reason.
Even though kids suck.

So now I work no more than 50 hr weeks, for more money, usually get to have dinner with my kids, and am in my own bed at home most nights
result

@Simon Dude, isn't that a felony?

oszi pls
@RoryAlsop Yeah, I've decided that I'm never gonna live to work.

@Iszi You're forgetting that @Simon is himself 6 years old.

@DavidFreitag *2

7:01 PM
@DavidFreitag So, that makes it a "minor" offense?

Someone asked my age earlier and I felt old :(

@Iszi AFAIK kids playing 'doctor' isn't against any laws in America. If it is I broke them more than a few times.
Also, that was a crap joke.

My doctor plays doctor with me.
Here he is, @schroeder, pretending to be active in The DMZ.

lol - I'm on vacation
I'm doing my best

@schroeder Crime never gets vacation.

7:06 PM
lol

@Simon That's because crime doesn't pay.

@DavidFreitag Do you think that @Iszi pays my mom?

@Simon No, but I think she may be paying him.

@DavidFreitag That's what I'm thinking too.

@Simon Why? Are you suddenly getting no allowance?

7:10 PM
@Simon I can't help if she enjoys the service.

@DavidFreitag She reduced it :(

@Iszi You should have heard her complaining, apparently you are the only one who will do the job. She seemed quite dissatisfied.

yeah noob

@DavidFreitag Well, next time she can fix her own damn computer.

@Iszi Oh, you were trying to fix her computer? That explains a few things.

7:22 PM
37 minutes and counting.....

@RoryAlsop I forget, are results instant or do they require Community Manager confirmation or something?

@Simon Don't get me wrong, the job was awesome. If I didn't have a family I would still be doing it. Travelling the world, staying in 5 star hotels, hacking banks, talking with movers and shakers

@RoryAlsop Yeah that does sound cool as hell.

@Simon So, not cool at all?

@Iszi I think they are pretty quick - you can check yourself if you have the vote counting software, but CM's publish quite quickly anyway

7:25 PM
they'll be within seconds this time
:)

@RoryAlsop Oh, the raw data posts instantly this time?

@Simon hell typically expected to be rather hot, possibly upwards of 150 degrees C, unless you believe Dante's version, which has a lot of ice too

@Iszi OSZI
@RoryAlsop RORO

@Undo So, you're running that for us?

aye

7:26 PM
@Undo Awesome. Thanks!

@Undo that looks quite cool, only I'll be on a small mobile device, sipping on my March of the Penguins
@Undo oh - very cool
Thanks

BTW: I don't think I've seen @Copy or @Paste in ages. Anyone?

I mean, unless I fall asleep or die or get eaten by something with big teeth, yes.

rip

@RoryAlsop Is that some sort of euphemism?
Wait, this is the DMZ. Of course it's a euphemism.

7:27 PM
@Iszi copy: seen 23 hours ago
paste: doesn't exist

They probably broke up.

@Iszi nah - it's a pleasant stout

@RoryAlsop Dafuq? When did that happen?

@Iszi We haven't seen them since forever, I don't see how that's hard to believe or a wadafuk moment.

@Simon 'Cause we haven't seen them since forever. And I met them IRL - they were pretty cool kids.

7:28 PM
@Iszi Whoa, when did that happen?

Like, last year I think?

@Iszi oh, they were actual people? I assumed someone's aliases for fun

Were they super nurdy?
@RoryAlsop They were a couple IIRC.
Or they just banged together.

I guess paste could have changed name

That's probably what happened.

7:29 PM
@RoryAlsop Nope. I think @Paste used to be called something else. But then she changed her SN to match @Copy.

Her name was something about badger IIRC.
Don't ask me how I remember that.

@Simon Must be all the mushrooms.

Badger Cat, Mexico

Oh, wow. It was 2013 - not last year.
'Round this time of year though. They came to FL to see each other or something. Caught up with them at a local bar while they were here.

@ThomasPornin fairly good turnout

IF I'M DEAD I CAN'T MODERATE PROPERLY!!!!

wat
@ThomasPornin Do the government make the voting phase longer because some donut is late at voting?
NO.

@Xander that sounds like a personal problem

@Simon Actually they do -- because they use the proportion of non-voting people as a measure of disapproval.

7:39 PM

Although some countries chose another method: making voting compulsory.

or make "voting" compulsory
Congratulations, citizen of Glorious Leader's People's Republic! Your vote for the Glorious Leader has been tallied!

@etherealflux You're not being properly supportive of my feelings.

@Xander Do you really want to be a moderator ?

@ThomasPornin Wouldn't that possibly count participants from earlier elections who haven't actually voted in this one?

7:43 PM
@Iszi He can filter by date.
You silly Christmas donut.

@Iszi They are ordered by date, and I did not count the ones from 2012.

@ThomasPornin Yes, I do, in fact.

@Xander It was a trick question and you've just activated his trap card.

@ThomasPornin But that aside, I also want to win. I enjoy winning at things.
And until it's over, I can't have won.

7:51 PM
@Xander That I can understand. This is sane.
