3:00 PM
sure, I read fairy tales too

I consider faith of any sort a tool for good or evil.

no problem with that
but I don't go around killing people in the name of Cthulhu do I?

@JourneymanGeek ya really. a lot of the terror acts in the US are by christians... because we have a lot of christians

but people kill for any reason.

3:00 PM
@Ohnana I've never heard of a Christian terrorist, though.

and well, understanding the masterminds are fucking cowards is a good first step.
@MarkHulkalo mcveigh?

He was?

@JourneymanGeek well they're just downgrading their own existence to vermin with it

Yeah what a scumbag
I didn't know he was a christian

3:01 PM
@TildalWave: terrorists are vermin
@MarkHulkalo same way OBL is a muslim I guess.

Christian terrorism comprises terrorist acts by groups or individuals who profess Christian motivations or goals. == HistoricalEdit == === Gunpowder PlotEdit === The early modern period in Britain saw religious conflict resulting from the Reformation and the introduction of Protestant state churches. The 1605 Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt by a group of English Catholics including Guy Fawkes to assassinate King James I, and to blow up the Palace of Westminster, the English seat of government. According to Vahabph D. Aghai, "The beginnings of modern terrorism can be traced back to ...

yes and they'll go at great length to prove that

edumacate

Regardless of religion, people will find a reason to kill

There's hindu extremism.

3:02 PM
also, check the See Also article on anti-abortion violence -- almost all christians

Hell, there's buddist extremist monks
but its not about 'god'

@JourneymanGeek Yep, they've bombed a lot of places in China.

its about people perverting religon as a font of evil

@Ohnana Yeah, I don't get that. I mean, if you're against abortion because it's murder, then ok, that's your choice. But going and murdering other people to protest murder? Huh?
That's nonsensical.

I hate that logic "all of this is His domain" and then "but not all people are His" ... WTF?

3:03 PM
@MarkHulkalo: those people are obviously mentally ill, and need to be put away.

@MarkHulkalo makes sense if you believe in the death penalty and "god's wrath" -- which is almost always fatal

Yeah, mental illness is a huge problem in America.

@TildalWave: I believe if a deity has a damned problem, he/she/they ought to deal with it themselves.

If you admit to being mentally ill, you're ostracized. So these people can't get help

A little lightning and loud voics go a long way.

3:04 PM
If they didn't believe in God, they'd either invent one, or find some other reason to kill. "The government is after me!" etc

There's always a scapegoat, or a source, that people cling on to

or reptilians

@MarkHulkalo Did they murder in the name of the islam? Also if you are being afraid for that reason: be very afraid near christian, christians murdered loads of people. Being afraid of someone because of his religion is stupid.

3:05 PM
@Arperum I'm not afraid, my wife is.

@JourneymanGeek hear hear. don't create a bunch of assholes and expect them to get along without supervision

@Arperum I think that really depends on what part of the world you are in.

And that's a thing
Don't dignify these people by calling them "islamic fundamentalists"
In the counties which arn't in a war, call them criminals.
in countries that are, depending on what side you are "the enemy" seems suitable, or local militia.

@MarkHulkalo I live in Belgium, it's a sort of tiny country, it is supposed to be the source of all evil if you believe the news recently. We had six bomb alerts this morning. Half of everything big is cancelled because stupid fear. And I see no reason to be afraid.

Yeah, agreed

3:07 PM
@JourneymanGeek Well there's always gonna be lunatics proclaiming themselves as hands of God, and taking matters into their own hands, won't they? Seems to me all this religion nonsense is just brainwashing people to be more malleable to ideas of other people. That's why I hate religion of any kind. But I absolutely don't hate faith. The difference being, one is a personal belief, the other is an institution.

@Arperum well, these sort of incidents don't happen often cause they arn't easy.

At least three of the bomb alerts were false alarms though, I don't know about the other three, probably fake too.

@TildalWave but quite often people crave structure.
and well, they are lunatics

Doesn't change the fact that ISIS has issued a bunch of threats to attack X, Y, and Z, and are coming through with their threats in the case of France.

by not giving the ones that exist the sort of attention they want, you cut back on the payoff

3:09 PM
Most muslims are completely against ISIS

@MarkHulkalo its essentially a police mater tho.
especially as there's a local backlash.

But the media fearmongering is painting all of them as extremists

and we have ppl advocating for a national registry

Round em up, shoot the ones with explosive accessories, put the rest in a deep dark hole.
(even if the roman solution for this sort of problem seems appealing)

nothing like a common enemy to bring out the nazi in all of us

3:11 PM
@Ohnana It begins...

@MarkHulkalo Ya well, ISIS is mostly caused by Europe/US anyway. US caused a power vacuum, EU has been busy being a bunch of racist assholes, and keeping certain groups out of society, if these then turn around and attack you...

well that's equally wrong innit?

You reap what you sow.

@Ohnana IMO treating the 'good' ones bad feeds the bad ones.

@JourneymanGeek "IMO" -- that's not an opinion. that's a fact

3:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yes.

i'm scared for my muslim friends

Me too. I work with some great people who just want to live in peace
I'm afraid someone might try to ostracize them

it's just another form of forming people's opinions... we should all get to grips, not just some religious extremists, otherwise we'll all become the same

not only do they have to worry about some asshole jihadi deciding they're not muslimy enough, but they have to worry about some asshole skinhead deciding they're too muslimy

^
You nailed it

3:12 PM
truth is, this world is ruled by idiots
anywhere I look
we've all got used to blaming others for our own problems because that's easier than looking hard into ourselves

@Ohnana I don't believe in absolutes. There's many way to deal with the issues at hand. Many of them might actually be humane and intellegent.
so, its my opinion.
But I also wish we could change the narrative on these things.

no, i mean there's sociological evidence that shows that
we've known this for years

"Cowardly criminal gang shoots up paris"
I still like having that cosy little demarkation.

@kalina That and Arturia MiniLab.

I feel bad for all the refugees who will be stuck in conflict

3:17 PM
lol

and many who will give up and just join ISIS because everyone rejected them

My dad grew up in jaffna
So I sympathise towards refugees.

I sympathize with anyone in a situation they don't want to be in, but which they're forced to by nutjobs

^

I dislike the notion of hurting or oppressing anyone

3:22 PM
@kalina I think I'd enjoy a hardware drum machine.

@Simon I have an electronic drumset I can sell you

@RoraΖ I'd prefer if you could sell me a TR-909.

@Simon a proper drum machine or like a launchpad?
right a proper drum machine

@kalina A proper.

@Simon Well I have a drum set, so take it or leave it.

3:26 PM
@RoraΖ I'll leave it: final answer.

There's definitely not enough room in my apartment for this.

are you sure you need a drum machine?

It takes up like 6sqft

@kalina I don't "need" one but it would be nice.

3:31 PM
are you sure?
I don't even bother with a drum machine
don't you think it would be a good idea to get a keyboard
or some other controller

My MiniLab is a keyboard.
It's only 25 keys but 49 wouldn't fit on my desk.
I can't wait to move the fuck out.

right, yes... arturia minilab

It's a nice little keyboard, I like it.

well since you already have the TB3 have you considered the TR8?
not that I would ever recommend such a device

3:37 PM
but you're already victimized yourself with the TB3

^^ he needs to get some more kit to be cool like Flula

@kalina Yeah...
And it lags A LOT with Logic.

what do you mean by "lags"

It responses well for the first few minutes and then there's a good 1-2 second delay.
If I unplug/re-plug it, it's fine.

and you blame the device for this?

3:40 PM
Well, my MiniLab never had any delay but yes it could be Logic.
This little donut looks like but I feel like it lacks parameters to control.
"VCO Wave: Sawtooth, Square"
That's it?

alesis sr18 is probably in your price range

No knobs? How would I manage to feel good while using it?
5

Wow - what a great certificate of quality

well fine, get a dsi tempest then

3:43 PM
@kalina Way too damn expensive.
But yes, it would be the ultimate drum machine to own.

so don't get a drum machine

QQ I wanna purchase a new toy.

Q: Employee laptops in China

Stone TrueI recently took a business trip to China. Our IT department told me I could not take my normal machine, and instead gave me a loaner. This loaner had MS Outlook and was linked to my normal company e-mail account. I logged into the corporate network using the same VPN and token (Mobile Pass on ...

@Simon get a drone

@RоryMcCune I don't wanna be that guy.

3:45 PM
@Simon what guy?

Drones are awesome!
Seriously, get a drone with a huge range.

@Simon have you made any progress on arrangements yet?

@kalina Yes.

have you had a release yet?

pls

3:47 PM
...
what do you mean pls
it's been like 9 months already
ok how close are you to finishing a full arrangement?

@kalina How long would be a full arrangement to you?
My ween long or like 2 minutes?

...
neither of which would be a full arrangement
both are far too short

o

dance music? like 6 minutes

SIX?!?!?!?

3:48 PM
5 minimum

Ask me again in a month.

@Simon yeah it's a song not a ringtone

fckin noob 14 minute long songs come up on my pandora

are you serious

get on my level

3:49 PM
all this grief you give me and I'm only trying to help

@kalina I'M SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME ON USELESS PARAMETERS

I've been strongly suggesting you spend time on arrangements for months.

I know but I've had time to trash projects during those months.
The good ol' case of rage quitting.

well you need to set fire to yourself

But that would hurt.

3:51 PM
there is far more to being successful in the music industry than being able to write tracks, or being an awesome sound designer, or having creative vision, or being able to mix a track down, or mastering...
and you're still bumbling around on the sitting in front of a PC and achieving anything at all phase
spending large quantities of monies on hardware isn't going to boost you through it at all

geez @Simon get with the programme

@RоryMcCune Kamikaze Space Program? Good producer.

you'll just end up a with a bunch of reasonable to nice hardware that never gets used for its intended purpose

@Simon nonono, they hey simon write the darn track programme

@kalina I know but I haven't bought anything big in a while and I feel like some sort of woman who has to shop for a new purse.

3:54 PM
@Simon resist the urge

@Ohnana Yeah, I should.

@Simon you need a deadline that you've committed too publicly, that's what works for me with presentations. I know that on day x I have to stand-up and present to over 100 people, focuses the mind on making it happen

Christmas is coming up too so that'll cost some monies.

seriously, new shinies become old shinies and the cycle repeats
@RоryMcCune lmao motivation by starvation

@Ohnana fear of looking like a muppet on stage is a great motivation

3:55 PM
9 months already ? you're late on delivery

@RоryMcCune I don't think that setting a deadline would be the best way to learn though

@RоryMcCune yip yip yip security yip yip

my next one is a presentation for up to 200 professional smart-arses (aka pen testers) so it'll need to be good

But at this point, it might be because it would make me spend less time on mastering or subtle fx at the early stage.

@RоryMcCune i wouldn't mind helping you review it
seeing as i'm in the target audience

3:56 PM
@Simon a decent plan delivered soon is better than a perfect plan delivered never
@Ohnana ta, I'll ping you once I've got some more stuff down for it :)

@RоryMcCune Yeah I've heard a similar quote recently: "You know what's better than perfect? Done."

Yeah, a lot of pen testers/security guys miss a few things on their reports, but usually get the gist of it.
@RоryMcCune So I agree.

@Simon it's true, nothing is perfect and you don't really learn till you try delivering something, there's nothing to stop you taking lessons from the first one to the next one.. and it's not like there's a limited number of tracks you can make
when you get to @kalina like levels of getting paid lots of cash for tracks, you can focus on endless polishing

Maybe I should just give up and do the pls dance.

@Simon What are you presenting?

4:00 PM
@Simon nah don't give up if you enjoy doing it

@MarkHulkalo My ween.

@MarkHulkalo he's not presenting he's meant to be writing music
you know who said it best???? Shia

Oh, nice

JUST DO IT

4:01 PM
I don't like that video, he yells at me.
Shia pls

@Simon he'll stop once you get a track done

No he won't.
He's an abusive individual.

@Simon well he is an actual cannibal

o

@Simon did you not know about that?

4:03 PM
wat

^ you need to watch that
it has the whole story

Can I just listen to it?

@Simon yeah , although the visuals are cool
the audio does the trick

It doesn't explain much though, they just say that he's catch you and eat you.

@Simon you haven't finished it yet

4:06 PM
@Simon well you could resist or buy something else

@kalina Yeah I'm gonna do that.
BOOOOOOOOOOO.
Stacking up monies suck.
@RоryMcCune IT DIDN'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING.

@Simon no but every task you undertake in life works better with some planning and clear objectives that can be objectively assessed

@Simon yeah I know but still a good song+video :)

o^2

@Simon yes, I used to get caught up in mixing down and would bang out multiple exports that could all be mastered fine but sounded different and after a while it's literally a case that the difference between your best attempt and your first attempt isn't big enough to justify all of the extra time you spent on it
@RоryMcCune I don't focus on endless polishing

4:09 PM
Not even with weens?

@kalina I know but I was suggesting that it would be more justified and the kind of level you work at (where someone is paying for the track) as opposed to where @Simon is trying to put out a first track

@Simon seriously? I was enjoying having a serious conversation for a change

soz

@RоryMcCune playing around is one thing because you can learn new techniques and come up with new sounds
making tiny incremental tweaks to a kick drum when your entire track consists of a kick drum is not playing around
until you know what is going to be in a track, you can't start taking stuff away
write the full arrangement with all your sounds completely untouched and then once you have too much in the track and the writing part of the arrangement is "finished" you can start taking stuff away

all am soz

4:27 PM
Thomas is the authoritative feed :-) — Rory Alsop ♦ 22 secs ago
lol
@ThomasPornin - I had to ^

4:49 PM
@RoryAlsop You got rekt but the "Bear effect" in that question.
You were leading and now he has one more upvote than you.

* sympathy upvote *

I may just be an old fogey, but I still don't understand the syntax rules around the verb "rekt." Can you please clarify

@RoryAlsop it's similar to pwned

@RoryAlsop anywhere you'd use "wrecked"

4:57 PM
@kalina I thought it was more pejorative than wrecked is (which to me just means drunk)
rekt implies defeated or embarrased

@RоryMcCune see also: got told, got schooled, "wasted" from gta5

@Ohnana yeah so like pwned

@RоryMcCune "see also"

Ahh - in which case the problem was with @Simon's use of "but." Should have been "by"

ahh I see, according to the oxford urban dictionary, "Wrecked" no longer seems to imply just straight drunkeness
@RoryAlsop indeed, @Simon just can't type

4:59 PM
Does it not imply, "foundered"
I read rekt like a Cornwall-coast scuppering of a smuggler's vessel.
A la Famous Five

@RoryAlsop yeah there's a limited amount of nautical reference in there, unless you've just seen someone crash their boat at which point they would be #rekt in both senses of the word :)

5:26 PM
@RоryMcCune How does an old fogey know all the latest hip internet speak?!

@MarkHulkalo I spend faaar faar farrr too much time on the Internet
also I get lessons from certified "young people"(tm) like @Ohnana and @Simon

Haha

although I think @Simon is getting a bit old for that moniker these days

i can't drink yet in my country of residence!

@Ohnana Me neither.

5:27 PM
cool!

Because I refuse to touch the stuff!

oh.

@MarkHulkalo so really s/can't/won't/

A little bit of both
I just feel like I can't

@RoryAlsop SOZ
@MarkHulkalo You suck.

@Simon - new Simon has swipe function!
Just been in toy shop
Sorry, haven't bought or for you #baddad

Hehehe.

@MarkHulkalo it goes both ways you know?
like, don't write on a package "gift" if you're sending it to Germany :)

What does "gift" mean in Germanynese?
Germanese*

5:56 PM
poison

@TildalWave I'd like to send you some gifts...
If true, that's pretty funny.

yeah unfortunately plural works often the same in German as it does in English

Learning other languages exposes you to funny differences. Like every time I see a Senate Bill, I try not to laugh
Because they abbreviate it with "SB"
And in Chinese, "SB" means... well, NSFW.
