@FrankLuke Jansenism was a Catholic 'heresy' that began in Northern France and persisted long after the Council of Trent. Their claim was that the simply followed the teachings of St. Augustine, with the doctrine of efficacious grace, they differed with Calvinism only on "Persistance of the saints". Because they generally submitted to church discipline, as well as helped formulate a correct response to Luther, they persisted until the early 20th Century.

@FrankLuke (cont.) Because of their insistance on limited atonement, along with irresistable grace, one could only 'receive' the sacraments if one was entirely pure. The Jesuits who opposed them, and eventually won, after several centuries, insisted that the sacraments, especially communion, ministered grace; the only thing necessary was that one was baptised and had a good conscience towards God(free of mortal sin). Pope Pius X refuted Jansenism in recommending frequent communion.

@All Like Jansenism, Entire Sanctification is a methodology of reward, rather than a means of grace. Holiness doctrine, which crept into the Pentecostal Movement, saw 'grace', or the Holy Spirit as a 'reward' for a sinless life, rather than the means by which one lives such a life. It's easy to fall into, and hard to get out of. One must 'see' as God sees, and walk by faith, trusting God for their sanctification.

@user2479 Thank you for that wonderful summary of Jansenism. Entire Sanctification also dies the death of a thousand qualifications. "Well, that wasn't a sin; it was a mistake."

@user2479 When you say "entire sanctification", are you talking about this? The way you describe it doesn't sound remotely like the doctrine of entire sanctification that's taught in my church.

Q: Isaiah 7:15 to whom this verse refers?

Paul VargasAccording to Matthew 1:23, Isaiah 7:14 is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ. However, Isaiah 7:15 (NET) reads: He will eat sour milk and honey, which will help him know how to reject evil and choose what is right (Isaiah 7:15, NET, emphasis mine). To whom this verse refers? If this text ...
