oops. that frame looks nsfw somewhat.. but it's a good video

@chills42 i fixed that bug you reported. the favorite count number should have the correct margin now

12:24 PM
@Jin Thanks, looks better!

Jin
great. so many lil styles on SO...
one of these days, i shall have a flawless css victory on launch... (besides subjective reports)

haha, yeah, nearly impossible to remember every detail in css
I'm really impressed by the control you have over all the details, really allows for a lot of cool styling

Jin
i have a long check list for css stuff. but for every new theme, i keep finding new one to add.

@chills42 Yes, I looked at the link. Thanks for merging it.

6:42 PM
we'll need to start a new photo submission thread soon. i'm putting up the new image tonight
at mid night EST

Good call, I'll take care of that this afternoon
@jin Any updates on the plan for the meta site photo?
There had been discussion about using the same image, or a b+w version of the image.

Jin
i'm going to work on a header graphic for the meta header

ok

Jin
i don't plan to have an image for the meta header... but i'll leave that to the community
i think a static header graphics for meta may be better in the long run
i don't think there's too much traffic and views on Meta.photo to be honest to justify a rotation photo

sounds good to me
right, I don't think anyone was thinking to have a separate rotation or anything

Jin
6:55 PM
yeah.
also, i'm not sure how to respond to some of the design feed back on meta. i've been monitoring social media outlets for the feedback since the new site launched, and all have been quite positive
i think it's 1) subjective 2) getting used to the new design(it's a big change). so i'll just let the new design settle in for a while
but i will update the Meta header. right now it's literally a place holder.
a gray scale Bokeh effect on a dark backgound color may be good. I think some have suggested that already

@Jin yeah, sounds great!

Jin
i think they've been voicing their opinions very constructively. I just don't know how to respond, other than "get used to it." i'll let wait for a while and see
i normally change critical usability/readability/css glitches right away, but for something that I consider that's more personal preference based, I tend not to do too much about

That sounds like a pretty good way to handle it for now.

Jin
7:14 PM
whoa what a cool vid. visually stunning vimeo.com/16369165

@chills42 Have to say I agree
@Jin That is (genuinely) awesome

wish i could watch vimeo at work

Web filters do suck a touch
It should be on the Joel Test ;)

agreed
prevent work more than anything

Jin
@ron can you watch it on mobile?

7:25 PM
A necessary evil in (non-tech) companies though, so people actually do some work

assuming I had a mobile device capable of it perhaps but I do not
My philosophy on it is that if you spend all day watching vimeo/youtube then you won't get work done. So judge people based on if they get work done or not rather than artificially limiting them (which hardly even works in this age of mobile internet anyway).
I can't tell you how many sites I've tried to get to for legitimate information that were blocked

Jin
@ron I hear ya. it'd be a lot better for companies to figure out way to have their employees loving the job so stuff gets done, than treating them like children by taking stuff away.

7:41 PM
Agreed

@chills42 Will you be around to update the message?

Jin
@RowlandShaw I can update the message too. so no one has to stay up late for this :)

@Jin Cool - That's about 4 AM for me if I've got my timezones/DST right

Jin
i just need the new subission thread to link to when i update the message

@Jin thanks :)

8:07 PM
Don't you just hate those questions that seem obvious until you think about it: bit.ly/aIZE1l

@RowlandShaw yeah... white balance sucks...

I've always followed the idea of site the monitor to match the light around, but want to give someone else the chance ;)

Hi @rfusca

hello

Finding the site useful?

very, i've been a big fan/answerer of stackoverflow for awhile, so getting photography help here seemed natural

Good to hear :)
I'm impressed at the standard of submissions for the next photo of the week

its good to just peruse through answers to get some knowledge
ya, they're awesome looking
i really like the dark one from jetxee
(many others as well)

9:47 PM
Look forward to seeing your submissions one day ;)

the post would be helpful to have the entry submission cutoff date on it though

I think it'll take a little while to get used to
Do you have any photos of your own online?

Just a couple I've take around the house of my daughter, just trying out the d3100
I'll be going here petitjeanstatepark.com this weekend, which is incredibly scenic
so, looking forward to that
(and i met my wife there, so always good)

Best of luck
Should be good with the autumn colours

yup, the colors would be a bit better if the summer hadn't been soo dry

9:58 PM
Maybe that's why the autmun colours over here have been so good this year

where are you at?

I'm in the UK

ah

I did catch a brief rainbow of autumn colours last week: flickr.com/photos/ratarsed/5137593728

10:06 PM
That's the same tree :)

I figured as much
its just an interesting balance of the whole nature and manmade

I think the wife sneaked into the side of shot there, too

i'm avoiding shooting in full auto (whats the point of buying a nice camera and trying to learn something if you just have a computer do it) and end up shooting largely in aperture mode and some shutter priority - is that a good way to learn?

I think it's a great way to do it
I tend to stick to aperture priority; and I tend to go for as wide an aperture as possible (so f/2.8 rather than f/32) - of course, there's an element of personal style there too

yup

10:16 PM
You can learn a lot by examining the EXIF data on photos you like on (say) Flickr to work out "how it was done"

yup, i've been doing that alot

Sounds like you're doing all the right things, so will be putting David Bailey and ansell Adams out of business soon ;)

lol haha
i'm a big research guy, so when i get focused on soemthing, i'm either doing it or researching how to do it better
having a young child limits the time I really to go out and "just shoot" though

Gives you a model that's not old enpough to complain though

lol and one that's not old enough to comply

10:19 PM
A friend of mine takes her toddler loads of places to phoograph

ya, it'll be better when she's closer to 3-4 and can comprehend a bit more
she's only 2 now

just wait until she's 16 ;)

thats scary
its just a shame i'll have to kill all those boys by then....
;)
well its been nice talking with you, ciao
