00:00 - 19:0019:00 - 00:00

7:00 PM
I was just doing some research, and without starting a war, would it be fair to say the 7D and the K-5 are comparable in terms of price and features?

i think the lack of noise and iq on the k-5 are on a whole over level
but i think the AF on the 7D is supposed to be better

That's how I've heard it, too. Pentax has that whole follow-focus-straight-at-the-camera slowness issue, but their IQ and user interface are well reviewed.
I may be biased ;)
I've also read that the K-5 has better weather sealing, but I don't know how true that is.
Really it is all a pipe dream at this point. I'm just justifying investing in Pentax lenses by knowing that there is room to grow, body-wise.
@rfusca Down to -1 on the themes idea.

7:17 PM
oh well, it was a thought

a good thought, I thought

me too
people like it easy though

Everyone's focusing on the narrowed down part but not the 1 week out of 4 every month part

yup
i may highlight that

ah well, probably easier to manage the current way but that would have been a fun twist.

7:21 PM
Itai had google call him and ask him to work there...

That's sweet! I had Yahoo do the initial steps of recruitment with me but it never went further than that.

he worked there for a few years

cool. What does he do?

now he doesn't do that, he does photography nearly full time

That's pretty sweet. I wish.

7:27 PM
indeed

hello :)

hey

@JamWheel the macro photo of the ant is incredible
Tried some shots today, let's see if there's something which I can share.

7:47 PM
cool

@rfusca I'm trying to practice Da grip

nice

I love the bokeh of the 70-200 :)

:P

no really it's a wonder :)

7:56 PM
ya ya shut it :P

hey all

this is a really neat interview

@Francesco da grip?

dude, come out of your cave

no

7:58 PM
lol

ah ok
so "Da Grip" is basically "holding the camera properly"

wow, that was a full hour on the phone interview. I thought Matt's was long and it was an hour texting
it was REALLY interesting though

@JamWheel holding the camera properly + using your left shoulder as a balancing point

you did an interview on the phone? come out of your cave and discover VoIP man, jeez

skype, so ha!

8:04 PM
@Francesco well, the silly grip he does at the end... the left eyed focusing I already do
@rfusca so you weren't on the phone lol

'phone'
:P

lol

@JamWheel yes I was already doing that, too
first shot of today

i've been really enjoying the interviews, i gotta find my next victim..err subject

someone who has been to the moon
@Francesco having said that - you do see people holding SLRs in some wacky ways

8:06 PM
you have issues, we'll just leave it at that

@rfusca lol
haha Steven Seagal is funny

@rfusca I would like a sort of double interview between you and jrista
both of you assert to have been into photography since only one year
but you have deep amount of knowledge

@jrista - didn't @Jin say that the potw could actually be a standard ratio, so long as it was landscape and the right height?
@Francesco lol i fake it well ;)

@rfusca There isn't any reason it couldn't be, although it would use up much less of the header.

@rfusca I can understand when you talk about technical matters but I have read some answer of yours about strange features of the pentax line. But you, if I am not mistaken, do not shoot pentax. So please explain how, while working for a large logistic firm, haveing a small kid and being into photo only for 1 year you were able to find out the strangeness of pentax line up ;-)

8:10 PM
It might look a little weird, as the title and links would not be properly aligned with the top of the right-hand column.

@JamWheel the obelisk was shot with da grip. While trying to overcome the Horizon level syndrome, but I failed

@jrista well i was just wonder if its affecting entries . Itai mentioned he doesn't enter cuz of the aspect ratio
there's not a seperate sized container for the text vs pic?
i just assumed there would be more space between text and picture, not that the text would move with the pic
@Francesco lol, i tried, unsuccessfully and recently, to switch to Pentax (but couldn't do it without spending more money than I had)
and in general I'm a research-a-holic

@Francesco rfusca has an unhealthy fascination with Pentax

better than living in a cave :P
now i gotta transcribe the relevant bits of a hour worth of talking lol

living in a cave wallpapered with pentax porn?

8:15 PM
The image and text are in one container

@JamWheel He just saw the light, for however brief a time.

oooOOOOOooo
@Sean i'd still switch if i had the money

Technically the image could be wider but the the text would be squished to the right, and no longer align with the left of the right column

@VianEsterhuizen ya, i just never bothered to look

@rfusca Which model were you aiming for?

8:16 PM
@Sean k-r or i was willing to spring a bit for a k-5

It could be not as wide, making more room on the left

@rfusca And was it lens costs that held you back?

@Sean no, i was trying to sell my eq and just didn't get the price that i needed

What would be ideal for the photo ratio wise?

@rfusca What brand do you use currently?

8:19 PM
@Sean i've got a nikon d3100 right now. And there's nothing wrong with it, the overall glass price of Nikon is much, much higher and there's alot of things that Pentax is doing that really appeal

@Francesco what was shutter speed and aperture etc?

@VianEsterhuizen i think everybody would like a standard 3:2

@rfusca yes that would be the best choice

Well, they could definitely go 315 x 210 and leave more room on the left. I guess it's not a technical issue, just a community preference issue

8:32 PM
...what am i looking at there?

Piazza del Popolo, through a fountain, one of the "twin churches"

i'm having a really hard time visualizing what i'm seeing there

this could potentially help

@rfusca Hmm. The custom content is not very flexible. We cannot style it ourselves, and the styling seems to be pretty strict (as evidenced by the misshap with the title and links yesterday).
I totally understand how people wouldn't want to submit because of the aspect ratio.
I have wondered a bit if we could allow the image to be a little taller, so it overflows the header a bit, allowing a more normal aspect ratio. Jin even noted that adding a shadow underneath might help improve the effect
Maybe we should ask Jin if we could try that?

in general I think we need to work on a way for a normal aspect ratio with Jin...it may be more important than realized

8:37 PM
Looking at the code, we can definitely make the aspect ratio 315 x 210. Making the image narrower, I believe that would be easier than overlapping.

Worst case, an individual submitter could always pad their photo with letter boxing.

ya, i was thinking that the worst case is padding

@Francesco hmm, too much OOF foreground frame I think

@JamWheel yup

If they allow PNGs then the padding could be transparent on the image

8:39 PM
Wonder if @Jin is around

That's probably not idea for load times though
ideal*

@VianEsterhuizen 315 screws up the text placement right?

no. Not at all
Should effect anything. There will just be more room on the left of the image

@VianEsterhuizen realize you can edit your last post by keying the 'up arrow' on your keyboard

had no idea. Good to know

8:41 PM
@rfusca I had no idea either
ops :-) misused it

;) learn something new everyday

@Francesco it looks a little bit like something is on fire

@JamWheel I was playing with the idea of capturing this rather iconic church through the splash of water

yeh - you can't tell it is water sadly
back to the drawing board methinks

have to go now, see you later :-)

8:48 PM
@Francesco ciao
lol quick, go here

Andrei RineaMedieval stairway : [resizing now, please wait]

oh good it says it
'resizing now' as a place holder lol

Added just a few CSS properties

@VianEsterhuizen looks good to me

Depending on just how the code works, it's possible for them to be able to submit any size photo that's exactly 210px height and less than 375px wide.

we were told there was a recent change that allowed any size so long as it was 210px high (I think the 375 wide was assumed)

won't the header etc have a css style they use to maintain a common look and feel across all the sites

8:56 PM
maybe @Laura can poke Jin

Yeah. The code seems to be set up for that. It just needs a tiny adjustment to float the image right, to keep consistency.

i think @balpha wrote the particular piece of code

@JamWheel It does, but it's possible to affect only the customcontent part

wow potw themes at +5/-5

How is ten votes on a question like that? Low? High?

9:08 PM
@VianEsterhuizen fairly high for a meta q

Interesting that it's such an even split

ya
its also interesting that there's been lil' commenting in regards to the no vtes

it's a conspiracy

That's actually a good point
I agree

probably is

9:15 PM
an exactly 50/50 split?
or
someone realllly hates the idea and has been making accts to downvote every up

Is there a point in rep where you can see who voted on a question and what they voted?

@JamWheel lol i actually considered that ;)
@VianEsterhuizen no

Think there's a min reputation to vote :P

haha, you could get round that
maybe it's the russians
or
more likely
the chinese!

I say we create a meta question and see what everybody thinks haha

9:18 PM
its the martians

"Are the Chinese starting their bid to rule the world by annoying photo.SE users?"
trying to get us to fight among ourselves

Sounds good

while they sneak in

They could even be planting devices to spy on us in all our camera equipment

yeh, why else would there be video capability in an SLR? It's ridiculous - the footage all beams to Chinese intelligence centres

9:21 PM
Also, I'm going to assume, for my own confidence, that those 4 fake accounts are involved in voting up the rainbow picture

(waits for a remark from @rfusca)
@VianEsterhuizen good assumption

I rather enjoy the video capabilities.

i'm staying out of the slightly racist conversation ;)

@rfusca It's more of a political/ideological one, but yeah...

lol it isn't racist at all - we have all had a go at 'ruling the world' - all the pointers suggest there is a good chance they might get to at some point :)
it is all in jest anyway

9:23 PM
agreed with Sean

i know its all in jest :)

and we're kind of mocking our own insecurities about it all as well
oh bloody hell
who starred my video capability remark
lol - out of context that looks a bit odd

indeed lol

thanks
now I won't be hunted down and lynched

gone. It was more of a joke, to see who noticed it ;)

9:25 PM
well, maybe i will
i'll probably deserve it

and by lynched you mean forced to watched that commercial you love on repeat?

i'd be begging for death in moments

he'll be forced to buy and use a DSLR with video on it...oh the humanity

i have a DSLR with stupid video on it :(

oh, then you'll be forced to use it

9:28 PM
your mode dial will be glued to 'video'

Or forced to shoot the HD version of that commercial

lol

i don't have a mode dial to glue :P
...

you mean you have a DLSR with a dedicated video button?!

you realise that would basically be an HD video of me beating 4 actors to death to the sound of the Haribo music?

9:30 PM
HAHAHAHA

@Sean i actually have no idea how to turn the video on

cough cave cough

@jamwheel Will it still be a musical?

yes, i have to live in a cave in order to not read that page of the manual
lol
@VianEsterhuizen if the sound of bloody gurgling out of a hacked open throat can be classed as singing, i suppose

Haha. Graphic

9:32 PM
:)

i think Jam is actually a pyschopath in hiding

yes, in a cave
advertising it in a chat room

now you're catching on

i am casting for this advert by the way - anyone want to audition?

i'll...umm..pass

9:35 PM
lol
i'd quite like to live in a cave
just need power
less people

you can buy a cave house in Spain

main problem with that
is it is in spain

wimp

i'd do it in Canada
might need a few guns
for the bears
suddenly very aware of the silence after that remark... lol

Cave = Igloo don't you mean?

9:44 PM
@VianEsterhuizen lol

1 hour later…
11:01 PM
if you haven't read this before, its interesting - petapixel.com/2011/05/30/interview-with-oleg-gutsol-of-500px
