12:21 AM
@rfusca Well, I have a K-7, so mostly, my complaint is that the high ISO performance isn't as good as the K-5. :)

@mattdm oh, i thought you had a k-5

The K-7 is basically the same with an older sensor.

ic

Also the K-5 has a new AF system, but word is it's not that big of a change.
So, really, that's the one thing I don't like: predictive AF is terrible.
If a kid is running at you, you need to pre-focus and snap at the right time. If you try to do a burst of AF-C shots, you'll get maybe one in focus.
I also wish the flash lineup was as sophisticated as Nikon's.
Oh hey. I just realized that for the micro-adjust thing, there's an Even Easier Way.
1) put camera in contrast detect in live view, and focus with live-view on. 2) press LV button to turn off live view, hit AF button. 3) note direction of change. 4) tweak adjustment setting, hit LV button to turn LV back on, and repeat.
The beauty of this is that you don't need a fancy target.

Pentax AF definitely lags, but I do think it improves on the K-7. It is probably the weakest link for the K-5 though. Beyond that, I liked the camera enough to buy two of them.
Sorry, that last was for @rfusca

12:42 AM
The AF is plenty fast for still subjects and even for moving subjects that aren't coming right at you (or running away). You'll find a lot of complaining about Pentax AF if you search, but it's really basically this case that's the problem, and on the echo chamber of the internet it becomes "pentax AF is slow".
And on that note, if you find a blog by a guy named "Rice High", just stay away. He's got some weird anti-Pentax crusade that he makes a point of pride out of.

"Rice High"? What's the problem -- sounds like a reputable guy.... ;-)

12:54 AM
He's an idiot, in my opinion, but some listen to him. He's been banned from just about everywhere.
@mattdm The K-5 AF performance is definitely lens dependent in my experience.

2 hours later…
2:52 AM
@rfusca - ended up getting the 50mm f/1.8 lens you recommended the other day. Was playing with it a bit (just seeing it works, of course...) Holy crap but that is a nice lens!

The more I play with Lightroom, the more I learn, and the more I learn, the more I like it.

1 hour later…
4:19 AM
@NeilFein which 50/1.8 is that?

4:33 AM
@NeilFein good! glad it worked out
@mattdm it was terrible on the d3100 too
@EvanKrall canon
laptop busted, on a crappy netbook

predictive AF is terrible everywhere, it's just less so on more expensive cameras

5:35 AM
@EvanKrall - This one: amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/… for a Canon Rebel T3i

@NeilFein i think it'll be a great gift

6:13 AM
definitely, should be
!
the Sony nex-c3 seems like it might have the same (or slightly improved) sensor as the a55, a580, D7000, K-5. dpreview.com/previews/sonynexc3
unless I'm mistaken about what sensor the A55 has
it does go up to ISO 12800

6:35 AM
@EvanKrall i dont think it has the same sensor

I think it might, honestly

the dr and iso perf of the a55 isn't even close to the d7000 or k5 though
or the a580

yeah but the curves seem to parallel the a580
also keep in mind that some amount of light is being reflected away from the sensor by that mirror

true

which could easily be half a stop
yeah if you just compare the a55 and the a580, they're pretty parallel dxomark.com/index.php/en/Camera-Sensor/Compare/Compare-sensors/…
especially color range and dynamic range
haha actually the a55 almost exactly matches the nex3 in performance

6:42 AM
kinda, but there's some definite non parallel parts

despite the fact that the nex3 is 14mpix and the a55 is 16
whoa, you went all monospaced

i did?

@rfusca yeah

wierd
new computer

probably `this
hmm
this?

6:45 AM
'lkj

there's a way to do it

hmmm
/kj
who knows

four or more spaces I think.
huh, still didn't work.

yes it did

wait, there it went

6:46 AM
delayed

yeah, the JS markdown engine is a bit delayed I think
or maybe it pre-renders with JS and verifies with the server
and there are differences between the renderers

@EvanKrall what lenses do you have for the 7000?

tokina 11-16mm, nikkor 17-55, nikkor 80-200 AF-D two-ring

interesting

the nikkors I bought used
oh also the 35 f/1.8

6:55 AM
the zooms 2.8?

yeah

nice

my bank account doesn't think so

hahaha, thats what i was just thinking

it helps to not have a family to support
or worry too much about the future =P

6:57 AM
i can imagine
:P
i may have my stuff sold by the end of the week!

anything not selling?

oh ya, nothing is really selling on craigslist...except for the nigerian princes interested

haha

but adorama made a pretty decent initial quote, so its being shipped to them (on their dime) for final quote

aha

7 hours later…
1:38 PM
@EvanKrall indented four spaces — that's a code block in markdown. :)
like this.

2 hours later…
4:04 PM
I will be getting my nikon d5100 today. It will be with default lens 18-55. So, just wondering, if I need to get any filtering lens along with it...or the base kit is alright for learning?

@user495402 its fine for learning
the best bang for your buck to help you learn more is a lens with a wider aperture though - like the 50mm f/1.8
if you have a lil' money to help with learning, here's what i'd get ...

Cool, thanks @rfusca...I do have budget that would allow me to get those

yeah, books I already ordered after discussion yesterday

@user495402 its good stuff to learn but won't break the bank
ah, ok
didn't realize you were the same
a lens with a larger aperture (a lower f number) will allow you to get some of the thin depth of field shots (where your subject is in focus, but the background is blurry) that the kit lens won't do except in special circumstances.
@mattdm do you have the Pentax 40mm limited?

4:17 PM
sure, I will have a week before I leave for my trip...so will have some time to experiment, and will read up during my 24 hour of flights

very cool
make sure and post some pics you get in the chat room here
we'd love to see
@user495402 make sure and read this q

Q: How to make travel photography captivating, intriguing, thrilling?

jlppWhen I travel I take photos of a variety of subjects like waterways, buildings, cultural events, the local people, landscapes, conveyances, nightlife, myself and my wife, things I see around me -- pretty typical stuff. I rarely plan for photographs. Instead I just take the best shots I know how a...

So, I added my name to the profile page, logged off and logged back in...but the name has not updated

weird, hmmm i don't. You can ask on the meta page.

4:36 PM
@rfusca the lens that you suggested is Nikon 50mm f/1.8G but the store that I am buying my camera from has Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens. So, looking at the the names the difference I am seeing is G vs D. So, are they significantly different?

yup
@user495402 the difference is the AF vs AF-S for you
the D5100 doesn't have an in-body autofocus motor, so it won't autofocus with the 50mm AF f/1.8D

ok, that makes sense

but will with the 50mm AF-S f/1.8G

and that on amazon says is not released yet

its brand new, there's only a few places that have it
you can get a 50mm af-s f/1.4 but its a bit more expensive
you could also do this:
but the price is REALLY inflated right now due

4:54 PM
"You will have unfettered access to our massive collection of photo gear. That's right -- you can take whatever is available, any time you want!"
WOW
"we're a five-star rated team of ass-kickers" lol

1 hour later…
6:23 PM
@rfusca lol

:)

Well, I fully intend to demonstrate my loyalty...as soon as Canon releases the loyalty-worthy 5D Mark III! (Damnable earthquakes... o0o -.- o0o)

earthquakes = God doesn't favor canon ;)

In fairness, it's not just canon affected by the easrthquake

7:14 PM
Yes yes...I was making light

@jrista watch it, after all this super hype over the 5dIII - it'll turn out to be some crazy bad pos

Well, I haven't heard Canon hyping it
the hype is all consumer created
and, I believe the more conservative rumors, like it will be a 26-28mp camera, rather than a 34mp camera
and it can't be a POS
if it was, it would be the biggest hit Canon ever takes...its their most popular professional line

@rfusca i enter the room and immediately get kicked in the junk, thanks
@jrista I have my $$$ sitting in my bank account ready for the Mk3 to hit the pre-sale shelves!

7:30 PM
@dpollitt Same. :)

I could intelligently invest it or make something good happen with it, but this is waay more fun

eh
stocks are on the bear right now
so holding onto the cash is better anyway

What I'm not looking forward to, is seeing my aps-c specific lens second hand prices drop to the floor upon release of the mk3 - right when I want to sell them

I don't think that would happen

I think they will drop

7:32 PM
remember, the bulk of Canon's line is APS-C, including their current flagship pro camera the 7D
I think 7D users have been helping hold up or push up EF-S lens prices.
I mean, the 10-22 is pretty expensive

yea, it keeps getting MORE expensive!
it is crazy

You might see a dip after the 5DIII release, but I don't think it will last

yea

I think APS-C is going to become more and more popular with sports and other action shooters
since there are more and more rumors flying around that Canon is done with APS-H

Yea, probably
I like landscapes and bokeh though :-)

7:34 PM
me too :D
I can't wait to get a full frame
I keep going and drooling over the 5D II in a local store

right on

but I have managed to resist buying it

it is quite nice

its fantastic
It will greatly help my astrophotography too, I think

I hope that they split the 5d into a photo centric and video centric version, but i doubt they will

7:36 PM
I doubt they will in this release
people seem to be asking for it a lot though...so maybe in another three years
or maybe they will release a video-specific version sometime in the next year
I just want them to release SOMETHING
canon is at least a year behind now

supposedly the k-5 is slightly more red sensitive than normal, which is why a few people i know bought one for astro

yea, they are lagging on the next full frame release

and since other makers, like Nikon and Pentax, don't have to innovate sensors, they are REALLY pushing the envelope on their bodies
@rfusca I don't think its really more sensitive...but it does have the most fantastic noise reduction on earth.

noise ninja

have you seen K-5 output, dpollitt?
I've seen near-black photos recovered in post to complete normal exposure levels, and the noise looks completely normal.

7:38 PM
@dpollitt the sensors snr is wicked good

I've only ever seen that in the newer Pentax bodies
bbl, meeting

k

no, i stay away from getting interested in other brands due to my lens collection

@dpollitt lol

just a <i>terrible</i> idea :-)

7:42 PM
terrible
*'s

I keep saying, all I want is silky smooth iso 51,200 to shoot my indoor wedding shots, and I'll be happy :-)

lol

how did you italicize?

*'s

ohh ok
i see

7:44 PM
bold
two **'s

fancy

monospaced :)

what is it with the people on this forum and asto photography?
you guys must all be biiiig nerds lol

:P
there's only a couple of us

i dont even really know what you guys take photos of, do you have a shot that you've taken?

7:50 PM
not right now, my laptop died yesterday and i'm still transfering stuff from the dead one to this one
there's two (maybe three?) kinds of astrophotography
one, stars with landscapes ...a single long exposure trying to get some stars on a nice landscape....sometimes with star trails ,sometimes not
wide field astro - all sky, usually stacked of several shorter (as little as 30 seconds, or as much as 20-30 minutes) shots to reduce noise...good to get a high def shot of the whole milky way
prime focus astro - taking a picture through the telescope of a galaxy or a planet or something
the first one is the easiest, second one requires a tracking mount to keep up with the rotation of the earth, and the third requires a bit of specialized gear
most of the time, we're talking about the second
but i think @jrista does some timelapse astro - or has in the past?
but he might have just been doing that for stacking's sake
@dpollitt i've got one i took, but its just ok
there's people doing MUCH better than that

@rfusca That's pretty good. Every time I get tempted to try, I look at some of NASA's photos and that pretty much shuts me down.

hahaha
ya

It's bad enough I can't afford to buy a backpack full of "L" lenses, but I'm gonna need a raise if I'm going to put a photo telescope into space. Maybe even an income tax refund or two.

there's a guy in my club who does some good stuff, but would be amazing if he had a better camera

8:07 PM
I got a 5" (?) Meade reflector when my son started showing interest, but we don't use that as much as we should. We went up to an observatory near here last year, and there were a bunch of guys out there with really nice scopes -- 10" and up. No way I'm going to be able to do that, let alone find a place to store it.

ya, my astro club has a couple of club scopes like a 14 and 18

The difference between those things and regular "consumer" scopes is pretty staggering.

in a couple of months, i can apply for observatory status and use them whenever
ya, that large aperture makes a difference
there's one out in...NM i think, that is a spinning pool of mercury to act as a mirror
how cool is that

Wow.
There's a grinding facility in the basement of the observatory, and a couple of the guys were talking about the precision that goes into making those mirrors. I couldn't believe it.

ya, its CRAZY
for any largeish size, its much more economical to make your own

8:14 PM
Yeah, it just takes a few months of working on it every weekend, right? ;-)

there's a liquid mercury mirror scope in BC that is 6 meters wide in its aperture
lol riiiight

That seems like it would be way more difficult to control than a ground mirror, but I guess they'd know better than I do.

its also approximately 99% cheaper

When you have to start accounting for the temp of the mirror, I guess maybe liquid starts making sense. Just nuts, though, when you think about it (for me, anyway).

@DLambert oh, it is

8:21 PM
@rfusca I have done some. Mostly moon timelapses. I've tried a few milky way timelapse sequences, but my camera does really poorly. I have to use ISO1600, and that just destroys any useful detail.

@rfusca Oh thats pretty sweet

@dpollitt thanks

apparently my city just installed the largest scope in the state this past summer
I can walk to it from my house, but haven't yet haha
let me see if I can find details

@jrista ya, the main astro guy in my club uses the same camera you'd got

Its a terrible camera for anything night related

8:24 PM
9-foot tall, 16-inch Cassegrain telescope. Is that good?

@jrista yup

anything above ISO400 is pretty poor

@dpollitt its ok

haha, if i go on an observation night can I hook up my DSLR or something to it?
article on the scope in question: edenprairie.org/vcurrent/live/article.asp?r=8073

if they let you, and with the right adapter, maybe...but there's an art to processing astro images

8:26 PM
interesting, maybe I'll give it a shot

Only 2.5k, ouch

yeah, well
half of that is the mount
its $1200 just for the equitorial tracking mount and stand

8" isnt bad for home use, its about the minimum to see 'cool' stuff though

this hobby sounds more expensive then photography

8:28 PM
Well, its a flatter mirror though

it can be

and you people want to combine the two?! crazy people

Thats why I like the EdgeHD line

lol
interesting

you get a lot more useful visible area with the mirror in the EdgeHD than in a lot of other cassegrains
so 8" is more useful

8:29 PM
thats cool

if you already have a mount
you can get just the tube

sure

the 9.25" is $2300
wow, the 11" is still $3400 :(

@dpollitt well i'm doing wide field astro, so i just need a tracking mount....which i'm building myself

sweet

8:30 PM
@rfusca how is that coming along btw?

i keep toying with whether or not to get a 500mm mirror lens
@jrista waiting for my 1mm drill bits to arrive from China to finish my motor controller pcb
should be in any day
if i can get that working, it should be child's play after that

not bad

limiting mag 13.4
I guess 1500mm won't do you much good if you want wide field though

ya
i'm not going to invest in a telescope - i'll just use the club's if iwant one

8:44 PM
it may be a few years before I buy one
I'm trying to find some land farther out of the city that I can buy, and build a house on

ya

a few acres at least, maybe as much as 10

sure
land outside the city around here is CHEAP

I'd be able to build a small observatory then, and not have to cart around a 75 pound telescope whenever I want to photograph the deep sky
It depends here.

lol ya

8:45 PM
Some land is real cheap, like 7 acres for $75k
but...I figure there are resource rights issues there
like no right to drill a well, requiring me to still dick around with the city for water
then there are plots of say 10 acres for $250,000

interesting

at the very least, I intend to own the water rights for whatever land I buy
so I can drill a well and be self sufficient when it comes to water

so that way you're fine when the end happens ;)

yup :D
I'll have some greenhouses, plenty of land to grow food on
I've gone vegetrian, so maybe some chickens for eggs, but meat wouldn't be a problem
since I won't need it

you'll be "that crazy guy out in the woods" lol

8:48 PM
and viola...apocalypse-proof
lol
whcih really isn't much different now...I"m just "that crazy guy in the city" :P

lol

I'm also trying to build some of those little tesla antennas that can draw energy right out of the air
I figure an array of those puppies should produce a useful amount of electricity
I could charge my camera batteries with them

oh my goodness

and be both apocalypse-proof AND still be a photographer! WIN WIN!

of course, post apocalypse...nobody cares about your digital pictures
2

8:50 PM
actually, I'd probably just spend the bucks to set up one of those solar energy generators, hook into the power grid, and sell the excess, rather than pay Xcel Energy a shit ton of money for energy each month
@rfusca but it makes me happy

indeed

I highly doubt I'd ever be able to do half of that in the next 5 years anyway
not unless I can actually start making some good returns on these stocks, and rapidly capitalize the project

ya
@JohnCavan - what pentax lenses do you have?
that 40mm pancake lens is so tempting to get, but its not really a good portrait lens i think, and thats what i really like. But it'd be a great GP

how are those pancake lenses with bokeh?
I guess technically speaking I understand the amount of DOF is dependent on "focal length"....but those pancake lenses usually look thinner than their focal lengths...
and I'm curious how that affects bokeh quality
or if it does at all
