interesting, adorama may pay pretty decent for the used equipment. Their initial estimate is just under what I'm asking for on craigslist. They're paying for shipping and insurance to send it to them for a full quote.

Good to know. Most people treat CL prices as subject to some haggling anyway, so you might do ok there.

ya
i'm hoping so
even if get their initial quote, I should be able to swing a full kit replacement to Pentax (which is what I'm hoping)
@DLambert if they pay just a lil' more...I'm tempted to not do a full kit replacement (one 50mm 1.4, a 18-55, 55-200, and a flash), but buy the K-5 and a low cost prime then start saving up for a f/2.8 midrange zoom
@EvanKrall ok...why?
ooo...i wonder if i could haggle with store credit
From craigslist
"Hello seller,
Good to hear back from you i live in Brooklyn ,N.Y and i

coaching course. i want to buy your item for my only son that just
traveled to the western part of Africa(Nigeria) to study photography
in a university. i will pay you $550 for the item and $150 for the
shipping of the item to my son. i will pay you through my paypal

My response:
"Oh come on. For heaven's sake. NO."

4:31 PM
@rfusca Lol. You just lost out on a big opportunity, sucker! I actually have been in correspondence with a Prince from Nigeria who wants my help in getting some money out of... Well, I don't really understand all the details, actually, I just know I'm gonna be rich!!! That must be a wealthy country because I'm always getting contacted by Nigerian Princes. Gonna be able to retire by 40 at this rate. Oh yeah!
Nigeria is in, like, Northern Europe, or something like that, right?

So how the hell would a Nigerian prince actually buy anything if he wanted it? Must be a rough life, man. "No, really -- I really am a Nigerian prince!"

@rfusca You would not regret that. :)
If you haven't voted up this answer, I highly, highly recommend doing so:

4:47 PM
@mattdm ya, we'll just see how it goes
@JayLancePhotography ya, thats like nigerian scam 2,012,332 from this ad

@rfusca No way, dude! I'm gonna be sooo rich when I finally get my sweet, sweet Nigerian money through customs... Or whatever...
;-)
@rfusca In all seriousness, I believe that your scammer is using Template #12 from "The Big Book of Nigerian Email Scams." ;-)

lol
ya, i've had a couple from different adresses with the EXACT same wording
there must be some university in Nigeria that teaches it as a course or something
i had a boss who sent a Laptop to Nigeria
@JayLancePhotography i kid you not

A laptop? Wow...

yup
then the credit card returned the money to the real person and he was left minus the cost of the laptop

4:59 PM
yup
the guy contacted us again for another model

Ballsy. :-)

so we sent him a 3 ring binder with a old broken screen hot glued on, some keys glued on and some stickers to make it pretty :)

Awesome! :-) Wish there was video of that unboxing...

ya
wonder why its so heavy in nigeria

@rfusca A strong apprenticeship program, I imagine. Plus, the pirate racket is pretty much sown up by the Somalis.

5:07 PM
so, i keep hearing the advice of "dont worry about the camera, spend the money on lenses" ....after owning an entry level and playing with a K-5 at my last astro meeting....i'm just not so sure I agree with it. There's a pretty good value in a decent camera
@DLambert craziness

@rfusca I think it was you the other day that was saying something about in-camera stabilization and how that applied to all of your lenses -- body upgrades are nice that way.

@rfusca Completely agree. My lenses can fit on the most entry-level Canon body, or the most expensive... But the camera body brings a whole lot of features (both convenience and necessary) to the party as well.

ya, and the sensor, better controls, better AF

I think once you get to the mid-point of the product line, you can really take advantage of higher-end lenses, and at the high-end, it's ridiculous to put a cheap lens on the camera, but there's a lot of overlap in the middle where you want to weigh your use against the equipment.

@DLambert ya, i mean, its great to have an amazing piece of glass on a cheap camera - you still get good pictures. But i always found myself fumbling to change basic settings and I'd miss some shot

5:15 PM
I know I'd sure love to get my hands on a 7D....

I've never even looked at the specs of a 7D, but its Canon's top APS-C camera, right?

Starting with an entry-level camera is like the old "hitting yourself over the head" example -- it just feels so damned nice when you stop.

lol

You definitely appreciate higher-end features once you know how to do it the hard way.
Yeah, the 7D is the top ASP-C camera -- everything from there up is FF.

for good P&S or printers I LOVE Canon...but I just can't get excited about their DSLRs. Don't know why. Nothing against them really.

5:21 PM
When I bought mine, I was looking at used equipment, and for stuff in my price range, Canon was pretty good compared to other stuff. Nikon's really been coming on strong the last few years, though. Canon's due for a little spurt of innovation.

ya
some of the patents that nikon has applied for sound exciting...interchangable sensors, curved sensors
@JayLancePhotography what's your normal use camera?

My 'go to' bodies are 5DmkIIs...

very cool
sweet, there's anecdotal evidence that Adorama offers more for trades as store credit

@DLambert Nope. The 1D series is APS-H... It's less cropped than APS-C, but the 5DmkII is the only full frame sensor in the current Canon lineup...

5:37 PM
this is actually kind of interesting

does that only work with one size of cap?

no, one piece holds 4 different sizes
from the looks of it
2 on each side
"3 or 4"
you know my number one grip on my cheap lenses? the focusing ring
its way to loose

5:56 PM
@mattdm - is pentax 'SDM' like USM/SWM/HSM - the quiet ultrasonic autofocus?

@rfusca Yes.
Supersonic Drive Motor or some such. (Officially, it doesn't stand for anything, which is sensible, as "Supersonic" makes no sense.)

@mattdm lol, i can just picture mini sonic booms coming from my lens

However, on most (all? not sure) lenses, it's not ring type, but rather uses a small ultrasonic motor with a drive gear. This isn't as good.

ic

It is quiet, but not necessarily faster than the camera-body motor (particularly with the K-5 or K-7.)

6:02 PM
ic, ic

All of the Limited lenses are too small to have their own motors, so I don't care. :)

ya, those suckers are SMALL
@mattdm i think there's actually hope of me getting enough to make the switch, we'll see

awesome. :)

yup

I mean, I'm good with anything anyone wants to use, but it's nice to have more people in the club. :)

6:05 PM
haha, ya, i understand that

Despite complaining about wide-angle being hard, I'm pretty happy with the new lens.

its got good color and contrast

@mattdm I thought it was SILENT Drive Motor...?

@jrista That makes sense. Hmmm, wikipedia says that. But I'm pretty sure Pentax doesn't actually say.

Usually the S means silent. One of the lens makers has a "Silent Wave Motor"
yeah...supersonic doesn't make any sense
makes it sound like a scram drive :P

6:15 PM
Pentax called it supersonic in their long-ago press release: dpreview.com/news/0702/07022105pentaxdastarlenses.asp#press

one of them definitely uses hypersonic, but that also doesn't make sense

its a buzz word

yep.

supersonic and hypersonic refer to post-sound barrier speed... >.<

@rfusca I pushed up the saturation a bit more than I normally do (with in-camera raw development) because the inherently bright colors at the playground seem to ask for it. :)

6:16 PM
@mattdm sure

@mattdm pentax has some very odd focal lengths though

@rfusca yeah, they seem to take pride in it.

lol

43mm makes some sense, as it's the "perfect normal" on full-frame. (Matching the diagonal.)
31mm may just be a matter of being precise — others might call it 30mm and be done.

6:20 PM
who knows

And I think the 40mm pancake is just a really classic design that happened to come out that way. :)

@mattdm lol

Nikon made a 40mm pancake too, back in the day. (No AF, of course.)

i do wonder why their primes aren't as fast though
i mean, its not like i ever actually shoot my f/1.4 AT 1.4, but still

The FA series is faster. With the DA ones where they're optimized for digital, they made other things the priority.
And they are really sharp wide open. The DA 40mm is sharper wide open at f/2.8 than the FA 50mm f/1.4 is stopped down to that.

6:24 PM
interesting

I think part of the justification is that digital allows a lot more latitude with ISO — if you can go up to 250k, it's not as vital to have a fast lens. (Still nice of course!)

Q: Buying a used camera

user634Based on the discussions here earlier, I decided to get a Nikon D90. I am looking on sites for used camera. I contacted one person and here is the response I received: All gear is in mint condition with less than 2500 photo shutter actuations and the D90 body just over 2 years old. The len...

Oh, I am so just not touching that.
I mean, reasonable question, but can we really judge prices for people? Maybe. Not touching it, is all. :)

lol
they didn't say what lens
@mattdm they can't make a decision, i'll help em out
lol
no, its not a good deal

@rfusca ha.

I love it. I'm pretty sure I was saying something the other day about the D90 not being ruled out in that question.

@DLambert lol
@mattdm its kind of the definition of 'too specific' or 'too localized' though, it should be closed

6:32 PM
@DLambert Pretty sure that's what the question said, though. "So, should I wait or is there any other option for good SLR camera.", it says.

she's asking if a specific camera from a specific buyer
the advice is only valid NOW

Yeah. The general question is "how to I find the fair price for used gear", I guess.

yup
i've answered it, but i think i'm gonna vote to close

Maybe make a comment about "I hope my answer helps, but....."
Me, I'm sticking to my guns on not touching it. :)

haha

6:37 PM
@mattdm I know the question was worded that way, it just never seemed to me as it it had been fully thought-through. This is just another indication that the original question wasn't a simple question at all -- it was the opening to a conversation.

@DLambert That's why I kept the title as I did: I didn't want to rewrite the question, just to capture what they were saying more succinctly. It's still reasonable to contradict the question in the answer. (In fact, it often is the right thing.)
Oh man. It is so nice out here. But I have already taken a two hour lunch.

lol

@rfusca If you feel like getting into the editing business :) making the title "How do I decide if a used camera is offered at a fair price?", and add a "for example" to the specific one.
That'll make @DLambert go ballistic, though. :)

haha

@mattdm If it makes you feel any better, I have to step out for a bit, so I won't go ballistic until later. ;-)

6:43 PM
i'm just gonna start making non-sensical titles
"Should I buy this camera or a stack of fresh pancakes?"

@DLambert mwahahah.

Seriously, though, this is turning out to be a real case study for why a traditional SE-type question is just too bounded for these cases.

"How can I meter off a cheetah floating in space with reflected moonlight?"

The guy's got a real buying decision, but it doesn't fit into that box.
@rfusca Spot metering. Duh.

oh, of course
"If my camera were a tree, what kind of tree would it be?"

6:46 PM
Yeah. :)
On that note, time to go inside.

7:02 PM
damn boxing gloves don't fit

7:12 PM
d'oh

next day'd a large size
Took me 4 seconds from the time this was posted to flag it "Nikon sucks! Canon RULEZ!!!!!!!"

eh?

on the nikon vs canon post...somebody went in there and posted that as an answer just now
@jrista - you might want to clear that when you get a minute

lol
i might +1 it... lol

NO

7:16 PM
haha
kidding!

lol

7:28 PM
ooh look we got a new troll photo.stackexchange.com/users/5519/fanboy

yup
see my comments up in chat

oh yeah. :)

rfusca got very upset when I suggested I might +1 the comment... lol

@JamWheel :P

@rfusca :D

7:42 PM
@JamWheel dang, now i gotta go assemble the bag stand

lol

Hello people! lol...kinda interesting to know my question was discussed here before people decided to answer :)

@user495402 lol
ya, we discuss in here

good to know...never been on this side of stackoverflow before!

the chat side, or the photo side?

chat side, I discovered photo side a day before as well

ah
chat can be helpful
there's a pretty consistent group of folks here
and there's a history, so you can always ask here and check back later

8:56 PM
nice...now I wanna get into DSLR stuff, so it would be good to hang out here I guess

sure, you're more than welcome to

@user495402 This is a great place to start.

cool...looking forward to get better in this new hobby
any books or articles that you guys would suggest?
or should I look for that on questions side?

Where are you in terms of photography in general? Do you have any experience w/ film cameras or Point & Shoot cameras, etc.?

8:58 PM
those two books give a very god start
one is on exposure and one is on composition
and they're fast reads
i read understanding exposure in about an hour

@rfusca Any tricycles in there? ;-)

thanks @rfusca, I have ordered Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera...so I guess I am on the right track

oh crap...i just recommended the book with the exposure triangle JUST as @mattdm comes in
yup

yes, I have nikon F55 and coolpix

Great -- that'll help you a lot.

9:00 PM
Mwahahah. :)

@user495402 we've got a pretty wide range of people in the hobby/biz too - so don't feel like you're the only beginner - i've only been at it for about 7 months

The nice thing about digital photography is that it's really cheap to take a couple thousand bad pictures while you're learning.

@mattdm I've been reading his blog for a while -- good stuff.

@mattdm yup, i found that book more practical, but i found it hard to take away from the book without constantly going back to the book

9:03 PM
He's a Bears fan, but I try not to hold that against him.

1. Shoot what you love.
2. Pimp that work.
3. Repeat.

Neat idea.

I find a lot of the Peterson book to be like the triangle explanation: attempting to convey things in a simplified, superficial way, with no real underlying theory or basis. Clearly that's helpful to a lot of people, but doesn't fit my learning style.
It's not just a hate of triangles. It's just not the approach for me. :)

@user495402 what kinds of things do you like to shoot?
@mattdm yup

@rfusca I am travelling to South part of India very soon, and its going to be monsoon season over there. So, planning to shoot nature and people

9:10 PM
@user495402 Cool. Definitely pick up that michael freeman book. That's what he's got a lot of, and a lot of it from india and southeast asia.
And, as the name implies, the sequel is really worth reading too:
2

You guys visit petapixel.com at all?

One might argue that you should have the technical basics down first, but as someone (@JayLancePhotography) said in here the other day, you really only have to worry about the technical if your pictures suck. :)
2

thanks @mattdm...both books look very interesting, I will have to order today to make sure they arrive before I leave

@user495402 its a great book, i just picked it up recently
@DLambert i have before, but i don't regularly

Honestly, any photography book that says "Michael Freeman" on it is likely to be good.
The one caveat is that the ones from Lark Press sometimes are sloppily edited and have lower production values.

9:19 PM
They've had some really good content lately.

lots of folks in the chat room
stars are so meaningless in this room lol
3

and what are stars for?
only the starred stuff is saved?

EVERYTHING is saved
stars are kind like a highlight- it makes it more visible and indicates somebody liked it

@rfusca Looks like Rowland got it. Heh, definitely looks like a troll..."FanBoy", rep 1. :D

@jrista yup

9:33 PM
@mattdm SUCH a SUPERB book!

hopefully he stays away

@rfusca This one is pretty much the supreme book on photographic composition...amazing info here. Probably my favorite photography book.
@rfusca I think we can manage him. Handy Andy has apparently been all over the net for quite some time, and still seems to troll other places...but, he gave up on us. Says something about SE.

@jrista his first book is pretty good
@jrista yup, oh, i'm not worried

Should I update our FAQ to explicitly exclude "How much to sell/buy for?" questions?

^--- Being the specific example I am thinking of ---^

@jrista that user was JUST in chat lol

9:37 PM
Unlike equipment recommendations, this one is purely about what price to buy at, and that is incredibly temporal and radically specific.
yeah, leonidas recommended he come here for help instead

yup
i saw

If he asked a full equipment recommendation, I think it would have been fine. But just asking about price, about a specific piece of gear, based on a single example from a single site...

lol...I am still here :)

oh, there they are

I don't see any way to make that useful to anyone other than the OP, and even then, its only going to be valuable for a very short time.
@user495402 Hi!

9:39 PM
i said the same pretty much if you check up in the log lol

lol
k

sorry guys, I didn't want to start long discussion about this...was just curious, and I have decided that will go with new equipment

Oh, we've been discussing this general topic for a while.

@jrista That's an example of a question that could be made much better by restating it. There are different ways to buy "used" equipment, ranging from refurbs to CL to ebay, and being able to evaluate tiers of sellers could be helpful to a buyer.

I think there's a reasonable general question about how to judge the right price for used equipment, either buying or selling.

9:40 PM
@DLambert: If thats what someone asked, I agree. But that would take a lot of generalization over what the question currently asks.

@jrista yup

I promise no long discussion on this topic though, so @JayLancePhotography doesn't show up and roll his eyes at me.

The risk you take buying from Adorama is totally different than the risk of buying off the back of the turnip truck.

hahah

If one of you guys wants to seed @DLambert's question that he just described, I think that would be valuable.
I kind of agree with @JayLancePhotography there...I think seeding useful questions like that can be very useful, and can help attract more experts to our community.

Eric BI'm looking to make some upgrades in the next couple of months (new camera body, new lenses, new tripod); and will no longer be needing some of my equipment (old camera body, some old lenses). I'd like to sell the stuff I'll no longer be using in order to lessen the economic impact of the new pu...

@mattdm Hmmm...

@mattdm Yeah, you're right -- that's it.

@mattdm MattG's answer on this one is pretty good.

I knew I'd answered that somewhere. ;-)

So, some of what @DLambert mentioned isn't really in either of those two. Such as the differences and nuances of selling to say Adorama, vs. selling via eBay, vs. selling directly to the buyer, etc.
@DLambert's answer on the first covers the "watch out for", but what are the benefits of each type of sale? Are there benefits to selling via Adorama? Are there benefits to selling via eBay?

9:45 PM
@jrista Yeah, it's not comprehensive.

I still think that would be useful info.

Oh, also, the "used photo equipment" is really about lighting and studio gear.

I've got half a blog post started on that... just haven't gotten around to finishing.

That should either be made more general or the title made more specific.
Since the answers tend towards the more specific, I'm in favor of that.
The closest to "fair price for used" is

Q: What's the right discount for used gear on Craigslist?

What you give up for this $90 price discount is: return period (short) warranty ability to pay with a credit ca...

And there's not really anything for where to buy used cameras and such.

We've got this incredible body of knowledge accumulated, but it's fractured into all these separate questions. Is that part of the ramp-up time for new users?

9:56 PM
(That's on miksang, not anything to do with new-user questions.)

""Technique is important only insofar as you must master it in order to communicate what you see... In any case, people think far too much about techniques and not enough about seeing."

—Henri Cartier-Bresson"

I don't think a more important statement about photography can be made than that.

@mattdm The devil is in the details. If it's implemented right, I think that could be a big win.

@DLambert I promise to shut up soon. But this is why I want to make sure that questions have good titles, and that every title uniquely identifies that question (ie no "How do I get this effect?", let alone "What camera?"), and that questions which are duplicates are marked as such.

@mattdm I'm not suggesting you shut up; far from it. It's a really important problem for us to solve the right way.
But FWIW, search should not live by titles alone.

@DLambert The search backend actually doesn't — it's mostly based on tags. But titles are what you see when you're skimming through search results. Therefore, it's important for them to be informative.

10:09 PM
Yeah, that's sort of a pain. You need tag langoliers to run around and fix up old questions as the tag taxonomy evolves. Bah.

10:25 PM
well, gear all boxed up for shipping out
here's hoping

Good luck. Can't wait to hear about that new K-5.

@mattdm That's what I say in my photo-SE bio... :-)

@JayLancePhotography was that it? anyway, I thought it was you. :)

@mattdm Too late. ;-)

'get the art right, and the technical will fall into place.' and 'you only have to worry about the technical side of photography if your pictures suck.'
It's a great thing to remember. :)
@JayLancePhotography dammit. :)

@mattdm I did see that. Thanks for the link. I actually ordered that book a while ago and I haven't had a free moment to do more than flip through it since it came in. I'm hoping I can get a couple days to go through it and inform a relatively comprehensive Miksang answer... If someone doesn't beat me to it, that is. :-)

@JayLancePhotography awesome. looking forward to it.

@DLambert "Tag Langoliers?" What an amazingly strange coincidence that I'm about halfway through a re-read of "The Langoliers"right now...
Too funny. :-)

(That's really not horrible. It's just a bad title.)

@mattdm It could be salvaged by trasforming it into a "What are the available options for a camera that is smaller than a DSLR but still a real camera?" type question, as long as we don't already have one of those.

@mattdm LOL

@JayLancePhotography I suppose I could have said "Tag Bots", but it's nowhere near as colorful.

@jrista Just weird (weird cool) to get a random Stephen King reference out of left field when I'm actually reading the novella... Not even a full-on novel... Only the 'sorta serious' King fans bother with his short stories. :-)

@mattdm: "have some helpful inform useful" .... ???
@JayLancePhotography Yeah, King is an oddball for sure. I've only read a very few of his stories, and the rest I only know via the movies or TV miniseries.

@jrista haha cut-and-paste editing error thanks.

@jrista I'm what you call a 'really dedicated Constant Reader' of his books. :-O

tbh he's the only author i avoid lol

It's one of the really geeky hobbies I have... I always tell myself that "at least I don't collect pewter figurines and paint them... Anymore..." :-)

lol
or polish rocks that look like presidents
@mattdm @JohnCavan to our K-5 owners out there, what DONT you like about the camera?

@rfusca I do collect pieces of toast which have the likenesses of various dictators on them... That's not weird, right?
;-)

11:40 PM
@JayLancePhotography only if your wife catches you in the dark one night in kitchen holding a secret meeting with them all, plotting world domination....THEN it would be wierd

Uh oh...
;-)

i can just see Jay sitting at the kitchen table holding a Hitler shaped piece of toast and speaking with a German accent with this deer in headlights look

I'd be the first totally benevolent evil dictator in history. It'd be awesome!
Canon cameras for everyone!!!

oh my...
its going to be sooooooooooo hard NOT to buy the K-5

You'd know people's loyalty to the state by the model number they carried...

11:43 PM
lol
@JayLancePhotography those lowly 450D people get rounded up and strip searched every once and awhile, while all the 5D'ers eat caviar off plates made of ground Nikon lenses?
@jrista better get a new camera soon

450D? Nay, sir... It'd be the Canon Powershot people you'd really wanna keep an eye on. :-)

ooh, good point

But I like the plates made of ground Nikon glass... Coffee mugs made out of Pentax lenses, etc.
You will do well in the New World Order.
:-)

lol
i'm aiming for chief of the secret police

Better belay that Pentax order, methinks. ;-)

11:47 PM
haha, nah the world needs coffee mugs

Everyone's equal in the Canon-dominated state... Some are just more equal than others...
Obligatory: "In the Canon-dominated State you don't own lenses... The lenses own YOU!"

@JayLancePhotography mini cameras on your cameras that watch you!

That's right. Better only take pictures of 'acceptable' quality, serfs!
Use that exposure tricycle for all it's worth!
