10:00 AM
hrmph, you don't read any of my answers :)

apparently not?

Q: Can a sniper be built in D&D 4e?

C. RossThe concept of a sniper has been around a long time, even with bows. Is this even possible in D&D4e, where the range increments are so short? Criteria: Long range bow or crossbow attacks. Ability to remain hidden (or quickly re-hide) after attacks.

agsfdf ddi. mind pasting it?

look in the damn answer, did

oh, you didn't mean silent shot student
I'm... not actually trained in nature

10:01 AM
SotW
fixable

feat-using
so two feats for that

::ponder::
hrmm

If I'm going to be sniping, I think I'm okay with using the move action afterwards to rehide

right
well, with the stealth trick, you can hide in some stupidly unlikely places

yes, I am looking forward to that :D

10:11 AM
::mutter::

cover: behind a low wall. behind a tree.
concealment: foliage. mist. smoke. dim light. rain.
I can stealth in the rain

..... that's just stupid

I'm pretty sure rain is the lower bound

it exists because concealment has to be anything that "obscures vision"
I am totally okay with you disallowing rain as long as you allow dim light :P

10:15 AM
so you can hide behind an umbrella.
muahahaha. Another one joins us.

more like now you see me (closes umbrella) now you don't!

::blink::
I'm so /very/ glad there don't exist hybrid rules yet

well, no, I suppose the intervening squares of rain would apply concealment

for thief
adjacent people don't get concealment penalties from rain :)

well, no.
obviously

10:19 AM
you cannot, yet, hide behind raindrops and lollypops.

:P
and I assume the cover granted by my allies doesn't qualify

brown paper packages? Yes.
...

because the assassin explicitly has to state that he can use cover granted by allies

see, about that
allies don't grant superior cover, therefore normal people cannot hide behind them

...no
no, that's just broken

10:21 AM
just a bit, yeah. looking up the wording now
do you know what's worse? Warlock | thief

oh god that shadowwalk thing

you gain concealment by moving three squares.

yea
...
I'm pretty sure that's the multiclass benefit, too
/me looks it up

the trancendant ki focus is broken
well, there's the gloaming shroud
daily "I'd like this to be dim-light encounter"

hm. apparently Cunning Sneak reads "Cunning Sneak: If you end a move action at least 3 squares away from your starting position, you can make a Stealth check to become hidden if you have any concealment or any cover, except for cover provided by intervening allies."

10:29 AM
wow.
woooow

i.e., it explicitly states you can't use allies

yup
okay, you can't use allies with this, cause yeah

cuz yeah, it's probably meant to be similar to Cunning Sneak

yes
oh /good/ you don't gain shadow walk untli paragon warlock MC

okay. Brian, are you interested in poking at 2d12/3d6/3d8?

10:34 AM
mildly?
(oh yeah, dusk elf stealth is stupidly broken)
feat on the tree that grants you invisible SoNT... for taking total defense

(well, they are dusk elves)

nono they're dusk /elves/

that too.
mind polling the table as to whether they'd want to switch to a curved distribution?
because the impact of that on play is fascinating to me

um
gnah
no, not to start with
wow, there are so many nature/stealth feats

fair enough

10:38 AM
good. no feats to trivially gain concealment

...I have more HP than the dragonborn?
and comparable defenses?
wtfffff.

melee striker = melee leader in defenses
you're both squishy
Bracelets of Subtle Defense
When imbued with psionic energy, these bracelets help you escape attention on and off the battlefield.
Level: 3
Price: 680 gp
Item Slot: Arms

Property: While you have at least 1 power point, you gain a +2 item bonus to Stealth checks.

Power (Daily * Augmentable): Minor Action. You have concealment from all enemies until the start of your next turn.
Augment 1: You have concealment from all enemies until you make an attack.

okay, that is going to mess me up

look at that augment 1
basically you're a frontline mook. So long as you two are tanking half the battle, the defender can tank the other half.

how does augment work?
just, like, visually
no way I'm seeing a dragonthing and a frail changeling as equally hard to hurt

10:41 AM
Augment: spend a powerpoint, gain the benefit

and a powerpoint is?

Awakened Potential [Multiclass]
Prerequisite: Int 15, trained in Arcana
Benefit: You gain the Psionic Augmentation class feature and 1 power point. You can spend this power point to augment powers, feats, or magic items that are augmentable. Once you spend this power point, you do not regain the power point until you take an extended rest. You also qualify for feats that require the Psionic Augmentation class feature. You gain 1 additional power point at 21st level.
shame you don't have int 15. Otherwise that'd be neat
of course, effects end at 5 minutes or end of encounter. But still. 5 minutes of concealment 1/day?

so can you get power points in any other way?
or is it ... yea, effectively daily

not sure....
but the power's a daily so it's a wash. And you're not int

oh, I get it
the power is daily anyway
so it's daily for at least one reason

10:44 AM
yeah
and it's fairly worthless in combat

yep.

but wow, it would be /soooo much fun/ to me as a player
but I love doing sneaks

eh. if you're sneaking somewhere you usually have at least concealment anyway
at the very least, that's why you sneak at night :P

yeah, but paragon sneaking... eveything has bloody extra senses

?

10:46 AM
blindsight, tremorsense, darkvision at least

/me raffa gaffa grfle mrfle

oh.
I know what you need
what you will /beg/ me for
Enshrouding Candle
This everburning candle creates a dim corona of light that helps conceal you from foes.
Level: 7
Price: 2,600 gp
Wondrous Item

Property: This candle sheds dim light in a 2-square radius, but it never burns down. Bright light within the candle’s radius is reduced to dim light.

well, a rogue's not meant to go up against high magic critters anyway

perma-dim light

...wut.

10:48 AM
oh and it has a real nice invis daily kicker
but um yeah.
get yourself darkvision and hey look, you, too, can stealth

how's that help against blindsight and tremorsense and darkvision?

oh, not at all
it's just perma-concealment

mm.
actually
what are some counters to those extra senses?

well, a /stupidly/ expensive counter is um
Grayflower Perfume
You spray the perfume into the air and for a moment, the blind creature can’t locate you.
Level: 10
Price: 200 gp
Alchemical Item

Power (Consumable): Minor Action. You are invisible to creatures that see using blindsight until the start of your next turn.
200 gp a turn gets a bit pricey

that... yeah

10:50 AM
also, um, stinky.

it could smell nice!

this question would be a great question :)
Oh FFS
you'd expect "darkstrider"
to have something about limiting senses, wouldn't you?

possibly?

I would
also, flashbang, FTW
no items to provide for that
no feats
" Shadow Striker (16th level): If you are hidden when you make an attack against an enemy, you remain hidden after the attack if you have any cover or concealment."

...what's shadow striker?

10:56 AM
feature of master thief
no paragon paths. this is annoying

Q: What are some ways you can defeat extra senses?

SohumSpecifically from the point of view of a rogue, it's kinda disheartening to realise that around paragon your best trick will be neutralised. What are some useful, viable ways to defeat things like blindsight, tremorsense, and darkvision?

why thankyou
Thief of legend, 30
that's kinda stupid

oh hey, the essentials actually get paragon paths

buh "I've got too many questions here"
that's... really annoying

?

11:00 AM
oh
he's talking about questions in the question.

oh, your mor post. yes, I tend to agree.

then why didn't you bloody tell me?
and is it better now?

because then I saw your bit about how you wanted a system that combined all three
and got confused
and forgot
it's better now, but I'd still ask the three questions separately and try to do some collation on the answers myself first
that's part of the reason why I thought it was weird

there, now only 2 questions
both of which fufill the title question.

it's still three smushed into one, though. weakly linked by the title theme.

11:14 AM
/now/ is it better?

yes! I'd remove the bit about large group combats and ask it separately, but as it stands the last line in context totally works for me

11:28 AM
ugh
blindsight gives me a headache
answered :(
Hey @CRoss
ugh: "Property: While in dim light or darkness, you are treated as having cover against area and ranged attacks. This property applies even against attackers who can see you normally or otherwise ignore concealment penalties." which... doesn't help
do you know what's really funny? Drow can't hide from each other

11:44 AM
?

They all have darkvision. There is no nighttime.
Drow, the masters of stealth, have very little opportunity.

well
Iantius brings up a good point re: darkvision

but yeah, to answer your question insubstantial+phasing
?

that "it removes only the ability to hide in shadows or dim light."
hence things like smoke will still be concealment

ah
"Ask your GM" ::sigh::
whelp, it's almost 11 here. Any final in-game rulings you need from me?

11:49 AM
nup, go ahead

12:39 PM
So I guess character creation is done. What do people think about Brian's method?

3 hours later…
3:15 PM
@CRoss It's an interesting process, but I still feel like it is a bit slow for asynchronous play. On the other hand, starting with backgrounds definitely added more meat to the characters. That particular aspect is one I've really enjoyed.

I definitely agree the collaborative aspect of building the backstory is good

@BrianBallsunStanton and @ AnyoneElseInterested: I got a response from WotC CS, regarding Hurl Into Heaven. They've escalated the issue, and should have more details within 24-48 hours.

3 hours later…
6:40 PM
@BrianBallsunStanton and @ AnyoneElseInterested: Received another e-mail from WotC, RE: Hurl Into Heaven + Dimensional Scramble. There's no official rule that clarifies that particular situation, and the issue has been forwarded to the development team for further work. Meanwhile, it's a "DM's Discretion" thing.

3 hours later…
9:50 PM
@BrianBallsunStanton What do we do now?

10:31 PM
@CRoss dance around? Lost and found? Hit the ground? Make a sound?

@CRoss @Sohum Howdy.
Kinda hard to do anything without the DM here eh?

Howdy how.
Weeellll... :P

10:48 PM
@Kedearian Hey. You missed some fun last night.

@iszi you missed some fun today.

Oh?

yeah, we ended up going through about 700 rounds of ammo at the range

Check the IC chat for the fun you missed... what'd I miss?
Oh?
Definitely would have rather done that, than work.

where's the ic chat?
me too.

thanks

(sorry for the lack of oneboxing, but it doesn't have context in the favourites otherwise)
you can always get to it by clicking All Rooms in the topright

11:07 PM
Perhaps as a general convention, we should mention which characters we're speaking for in dialogue or actions? I don't know about anyone else, but I still haven't quite gotten all the character assignments memorized.

11:23 PM
um. who's The Forlorn Ferret?

me?

wait what

i dont know

Sorry, just snooping ;)

@CRoss whistles innocently

11:26 PM
sneaks quietly back out :)
