4:00 AM
Everyone's been pimping duo in here lately

wut
did apple lower the MBP pricing?

@MDMarra I have it on all my boxes including wrkst, Its very nice.

@pauska 13" retina mbps dropped like 200 recently

so I see
they're identical to the 13 MBA pricing
which kind of makes the mba pointless to buy
sorry, 13" MBPr == 13" MBA

@pauska Not if you like component swapping.

4:03 AM
"Store your recovery key with Apple"??? Why the FUCK does such an option even exist?

@MichaelHampton For Lusers

@pauska not in the US

@Jacob what?

might be an oddity in norwegian pricing

@Jacob Oh yeah, I forgot. The people who buy Macs.

4:04 AM
might be, they're both 9500 NOK
which is..
about $1500

@pauska All the components are soldered to the board on retina

@Jacob and you believe that you can switch lots of components on a MBA?

@pauska RAM atleast

cheapest rMBP is $1499 with 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD. More expensive 13" MBA is $1399 with 4GB RAM and 256GB SSD

@Jacob uh? I don't think so man

4:05 AM
There's also an $1199 13" MBA with 4GB/128GB

but is the SSD soldered on rMBP?

@Jacob you're not paying attention
you're telling me that you can replace the ram on a mac book air
(MBA)
I'm saying - no you can't

@pauska MBP for life

wharrgarbl?

4:07 AM
The rMBP and MBA are equally upgradable

...Lathe as a service? I WANT.

only the SSD and only the crazy apple-specific one

well
apple charges like hell for the big ssd's

Context not required - I want somewhere I can ship CNC instructions and materials and get back precision-turned "stuff" :P

@pauska You can get them from third parties though like OWC.
Still pricey though

4:09 AM
@MDMarra Can I set this to sleep and have it keep encrypting?

Also plenty of "pulled from new machines. Never used" stock SSDs on ebay for MBA and rMBP

@MDMarra does it kill your warranty?

@Jacob No clue

@Jacob New MBA/MBP are hood-welded-shut machines (like @pauska said, it's all soldered to the MB). Stupidest Apple decision ever :-/

@pauska Probably
I don't get applecare anyway

4:09 AM
@pauska Turning the machine on voids your warranty :P

With Steve Jobs gone, it's only a matter of time.

norway has a two year warranty by law
on anything you buy

@voretaq7 Super thin, don't care

@MDMarra 's pretty much my attitude, but I don't like paying the Apple Tax for my RAM
@pauska Does that include shoes?
(I'm just sayin' I wear out a good 2 pairs of running shoes in the summer and those things are expensive!)

@voretaq7 I imagine that falls under normal wear+tear

4:13 AM
@Jacob nonsense - everyone else I know gets at least a year out of running shoes!
(besides you all know I'm abnormal!)

@MDMarra heh, the owc one isn't really any cheaper than just getting the 512 one from apple if you don't give a fuck about having a spare 128gb laying around..

Honestly I don't need 512G of disk space on my laptop
I'm using... uh....
(please wait)

@pauska ya. supposedly they're substantially faster though

133G right now

What anyone would need with faster is beyond me

4:15 AM
Welcome to Server Fault! Whilst this may theoretically answer the question, it would be preferable to include the essential parts of the answer here, and provide the link for reference. — Michael Hampton 17 mins ago
@MichaelHampton - I approve of your comment ;)

and that's 'cuz I have some DVD rips hanging out there that I haven't moved to the media box yet

@voretaq7 I have a 512GB SSD in mine now

@MDMarra that's what im thinking aswell.. what the hell do you need that kinds of speed on a laptop for

I'm using the size of a default OS install

I have about 15 thin provisioned VMs

4:16 AM
@voretaq7 I guess I could cope with 512, but like mdmarra.. labs man

@MDMarra I have like 50G of VMs too

@MarkHenderson It's not mine. Some user script did it.

but I could easily scrap half of those
or thin-provision them

no dedup on os x?

one of them is using ZFS though
@pauska none I'm aware of :-/
@pauska yeah I don't build labs on my laptop - we have VMWare at work for that, and I have a spare PC here I can use if I need to build out an environment for my own shit

4:17 AM
@pauska HFS+ is old and crusty

@MDMarra Lies. HFS is old and mushy from decomposition.

you're right, I have a lab cluster at work

Apple really, REALLY needs to fucking switch to ZFS

fuck it, 256g ssd then

@pauska and for $4K you can get a 1U box for home that can host at least a dozen medium-weight VMware VMs :P

4:18 AM
@voretaq7 it's weird that they didn't do it while jobs was alive..

($2k-ish if you eBay it)

$job is paying for this laptop

@voretaq7 Or you could always buy Ebay stuff cheaper

but I don't want to be a dick and present a $3000 laptop bill either

@pauska probably not a Jobs-Priority

4:19 AM
@pauska MAX SPECS TIME

well... public IP's changed, waiting on DNS to propagate

@voretaq7 he and larry was pretty close friends

@Jacob yea, but $2kish is the lowest you'll find decent VMWare-capable stuff for even on eBay

@voretaq7 500 a box

and pray the devs did their part in making sure there were no hardcoded public IP's

4:20 AM
@MichaelHampton I know. I approve ;)

@Jacob with at least 16G of RAM and a TB of (usable, RAIDed) disk?

@MarkHenderson Yeah yeah, only because it's not the American spelling.

@voretaq7 I bought the RAM and disk separately

@Jacob so what's your final cost? :)

@voretaq7 800 ish

4:21 AM
's not bad actually
every time I price it out I come out in the high 1K/low 2K range even buying my own shit to cram in
(ECC RAM and fast SCSI drives are kerspensive)
could probably get down to the low 1K with SATA drives though

@voretaq7 All my experience has been low budget, I know how to get it done at lost cost :)
I want to build a storage box now, no time
My VMWare boxes run my test enviroment

@Jacob I can still scrounge pretty well but I'm at the point where lazy > cheap
you'll get there yourself around 27-28 years old when you're making somewhat-more-than-comfortable scratch :-)
('s why I buy Macs actually)

rMBP ordered

@pauska Specs?

Really? That link convinced me never to buy one.

4:26 AM
13" i5 with 256GB

@voretaq7 Sad but true

@pauska RAM maxed I assume?

@voretaq7 you can't select RAM.. so 8GB :|

@MichaelHampton Meh - I DO get applecare on mine, and never really open em
@pauska whaaaaat???

rMBPs are all 8GB

4:28 AM
except the biggest one with 16GB

oh really?

which costs $$$$$$$

@MDMarra 17s can be 16GB, my friend has that

it's like double price

@Jacob There are no 17" retinas

4:28 AM
I'm starting to feel a little pinched with 16GB on my workstation. Could be all the VMs I'm running though...

15" retina with i7

@MDMarra IDK then, all I know is that he makes way too much from Minecraft Servers and doesn't pay any tax on it.
("donations for the server)

I want a 13" rMBP, but I have a mid-2012 13" MBP with a 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM

... ok apple you officially suck

No way can I justify the upgrade

4:30 AM
I have 8G of RAM now, and that's like "bare minimum"
and this is a 2010 MBP

@voretaq7 What, did the scrub your questionable porn material from your inbox?

@voretaq7 I have 12Gb in my iMac and as soon as you start VMWare Fusion to do anything actually useful on it, it starts to struggle

@Jacob none of my porn is questionable young man. Some of it is kinky, but it's all quite obviously porn.

@Jacob OOHHHHHHH burrnnnnnnnnnn

Did someone say "barely legal teens"?
5

4:31 AM
Topical burn too

@MichaelHampton yeah, you did :-)
welcome to the star wall spiky blue one

@voretaq7 I've been there before.

@MichaelHampton and now you drink to forget?

One of these days, it's my goal to have all 10 messages on the star wall be from me.

4:33 AM
... shall I continue? :)

@MichaelHampton 10?

@MDMarra yea I only get like 6

Is chat on a 1440p vertical monitor for you or something?

@MDMarra Yes, 10. You get a smaller number on a smaller window, thanks to DevOps.

@MichaelHampton You're just not that funny sorry. :P
@MDMarra Some say, that SE has a 42" monitor with the feed on it.

4:34 AM
In the early days of chat, I owned the entire star wall once. Then I realized what was actually pinned on it and I changed my username
And thanks to the magic of static numberical user IDs, it can all be linked to this profile too
thanks devops

@Jacob Not of OUR star wall (or else maybe they put it on yelling_bird's twitter feed or something relatively inoffensive when investors come by?)
@MDMarra porn Porn PORN!

The Internet may be for porn, but if I posted any of it here, it would be both starred and flagged...and probably removed.

@voretaq7 dude.. what the fuck

@pauska Avenue Q

5:09 AM
yay, new internet providers in! public IP's switched, DNS propagated, its looking like I diddnt miss any A-records or database connections
and its almost beer o'clock

@MattBear Its almost beer o'clock here, what time is your beer o'clock? You must start late

@MarkHenderson im still at work
=/

Better not tell you I'm about to go home for the weekend then

overtime and no bitching wife!

I may have shitty internet, but I'm on the weekend earlier than the rest of you fuckers

5:17 AM
@MarkHenderson my internet is my cell phone :p
i think im gonna go to Yosomite this weekend
climb half-dome or somthing

5:32 AM

@Chopper3 Can I bug you w/ another question? I know the situations are different, people react differently, and the drugs are different. (although I haven't looked your drugs up yet)
Still... did you find you had a similar cycle of side-effects for each round (or maybe just the first 4)? i.e. did they last about the same # of days each time, and stay about the same severity? or did they get better or worse each subsequent cycle?
Oh, sorry, one more: did you get a porto-cath put in?

6:19 AM
there is nothing written over there which says how to install and use it — user75380 5 mins ago

At this rate I'll be out of close votes before the sun comes up.

@MichaelHampton so that's that network owned then

8:18 AM
I think we're going to see @ewwhite here very shortly.

@MichaelHampton why ?

Someone just posted a question about their HP server.

8:44 AM
@Ward - I know you were asking @chopper3 specifically, but if you want a bit more data, my father didn't have a port, and his side affects were very variable with each round of treatment. I wouldn't like to say "better and worse" more "bad in different ways" though.

@MichaelHampton did you send the email about gravatar or did it get fixed automagically ?

9:01 AM
@RobM I think I can beat some of your helpdesk message. I just had a ticket put in with the title of "cannot locate on server" and the body of "cannot locate it". The subcategory is "printing" but I don't have a clue.

morning all, it's Friday!

morning!

rubber ducky post is hilarious

Dan
9:32 AM
I'm ebarrassed to admit this, but I've only just (As in two minutes ago) found out the difference between DVI-I and DVI-D

@Dan :P
8
A: Are all DVI plugs/adapters created equal?

tombull89Unfortunately not. I've found this recently, this image from Wikipedias DVI article will show the differences. Like CD +/- and DVD +/- you don't want to have to worry about it, but sometimes you will have to.

Sathya (SU mod) just posted a screenshot of this SO trainwreck. It's not even a programming question.

@tombull89 I...I... just don't know.

Dan
9:48 AM
@tombull89 +6 and 7 favourites, WFTF

@Iain Yeah, seems to be mostly working today. I never even got around to sending the email. Hell I just got back from the airport.

10:04 AM
hm I believe this document might have some encoding issues: ptrace.fefe.de/i18n-rente.jpg

Dan
Anyone pre order Sim City?
I'm thinking of buying the Deluxe version through Singapore. It's not great on my laptop, but I really enjoyed the hour of Beta I played

10:19 AM
@Ward Technically all 6 were the same thing, same amount of the same drugs, but my reaction to them differed a LOT. First was worst, got some nasty bladder & bowel infections, second was better but still terrible, third and fourth felt like a breeze in comparison, which set me up for a fall with five which was no fun at all, just shattered and I'd say that purely in terms of being tired but can't sleep and bad stomach that this last one's probably been as bad as any
@Ward Oh and I didn't need a porthacath (sp?), though I was tempted at one point, the canular's destroy your veins
@Dan I did, fuck the 65 quid version, was going to get the 45 quid one via origin then spotted amazon are doing the exact same thing, delivered on the day for a tenner less

Dan
@Chopper3 Can't remember the exact price, but buying through Singapore gets you down to about £40 for Delux

ah

Dan
Though obviously I'm taking the gamble that they won't ban me, but as far as I'm concerned, that would be illegal and I'll do a charge back on my card
I quite fancy the British cities, cos I'm vain
Did you have a go at the Beta?

I like Sim City but I'm not keen on this online malarky.Playing games is where I go to get away from dealing with people, not to interact with people.
Other than the kind of games you can actually play right there with family and friends in the room

Dan
@RobM Yeah, the Online Only thing is far from cool.

10:25 AM
I can just imagine people trolling the online 'world'. Building a slum city full of criminals and pollution next to your utopia. Or vice-versa for that matter.

Dan
I'm not 100% sure how it works in that regard
But I don't it will impact on your own thing

Their idea was that it was a social thing. That cities don't exist in a bubble in real life so they shouldn't in the game. Which I understand, I just think it should be an option, not something you're forced into

Dan
Yeah, I agree. What I mean is that I don't think their success is important for your own success. We'll see, I guess

yep, that's what I'm doing.

Dan
I'm not booked in for any work away after next week, so I might just wait until I'm away again

10:31 AM
cool

Next thing for me is Bioshock: Infinite - out 26th March which us half-term...that I'm working :@

that looks interesting too.

Dan
Hmm, just read up more on the SimCity online nature and it does look be shit
Apparently you need an Internet connection at all times, not just during load / start up. So that's me out then, because I just can't guarantee that when away and that's when I'd play it

@Dan SOmething like a three-minute timeout? 03:01 NO MOAR SIM SITY FOR U.

Dan
10:58 AM
@tombull89 Yeah, it's a bit unclear, but basically
What's that old piece of software everyone used to use for making 1.44mb floppy images

I'm out of close votes now. And the sun hasn't quite come up over the horizon yet.
You've reached the maximum of 24 Closure votes per day; come back in 12 hours

that's another reason I dislike online games. You couldn't say "I've got no internet connection, I've seen all these films, I know, I'll go and play Sim City"

Dan
@RobM Yeah, it's shit, especially when there's no real need for it

yeah. online play would be great as an option for those who wanted it
but its a bit shit as something that's being forced onto you

that is really not my biggest concern with simcity
have you seen the map sizes?..
@Dan openttd man

11:07 AM
I know it sounds antisocial of me, but I'm actually quite introverted, and games are one of the things I enjoy doing because it's a break from dealing with others. I even tried Eve online and the Starwars thing to see if I'd like those but... Nope.

Dan
@pauska Not fussed about that - there's no way my laptop could handle big maps, and I'd rather have small, higher detailed maps than bigger ones

@pauska there's that too. I liked to build big cities. I think Maxis are saying that while the sizes are smaller, the detail is higher... Maybe, maybe not.

@pauska +1 for OpenTTD, spent a LOT of time playing that during my college days. The TT-Forums got me into Minecraft as well.

Dan
@pauska Wassat
Ooh, I shall play witht hat
Can someone Linuxy help me

11:24 AM
does anyone know any sites off top of their head that will allow me to scan my IP for open ports?

@Dan I'll try?
@ColdT no sites, but I have an unfiltered box that I can run nmap for you on..
@tombull89 try the new FIRS patch.. it really does turn the game around
@RobM I don't want higher detail. I want a Simcity 4 thats faster and doesn't crash...

@MichaelHampton I don't feel like answering it...
I turned off half of my VM's...
and then fell asleep at the computer...
5 hours later....
oops...
turning things back on...

Dan
@pauska Basically, I'm trying to get the Broadcom NetExtreme II drivers working with CloneZilla
I essentially followed this guide:

http://www.packetwatch.net/documents/guides/2009062601.php

So I've now got a bunch of .fw files in /lib/firmware

But jack all happens after ModProbe. So, I carried on the CloneZilla wizard and let it do its own network detection. It didn't work, but I noticed that it's trying to load the following:

.......loading bnx2x/bnx2x-e2-7.0.29.0.fw (Not found?)

I have that very file. So I did a search and the only bnx2x directory is /sys/bus/pci/drivers/bnx2x which is empty and I can't copy files to it (I guess it's not a real directory)
Never mind, got it working...I think
YES! Fucking A

11:42 AM
You've reached the maximum of 24 Closure votes per day; come back in 12 hours... again

@pauska would you mind scanning 212.219.189.109 for all ports please? None of these idiots ever kept any records so it's a pain for me

sure
@dan ahh.. the same shit I was struggling with. Guess what the trick was.. use the ubuntu clonezilla image :)

Dan
@pauska Haha, yes

@pauska trying f.lux

@ColdT doesn't look like its responding to anything at all.. not even ping probes
@ColdT no response from port 1-1023.. doing a full scan now, but it will take hours

12:10 PM
@coldt nada response on all known ports here..

@pauska I'm with you, just telling you what their excuse was for not giving us that.

The maxis crew did IAMA on reddit and got roasted over the online/drm thing

iama?
nevermind

@ewwhite it's weird at the beginning, but you'll get used to it quickly

Dan
Haha, I love this (With regards to piracy):

"I completely agree with your opinion, but this type of response (not just yours but found all through this thread) is the driving force for things like SOPA, ACTA, and all the other internet managing congressional pushes.
EA sees sales are down on a "highly anticipated" game > sees this > uses pirating as an excuse to loss of profits (rather than shitty priorities) > buys congressional votes.
I can't wait for this all to end. I wish EA's investors would see this stuff. It's like hitting your finger when you try to hammer a nail. You're supposed

12:26 PM
@pauska @Iain thanks guys

12:59 PM
@Dan SimCity? Holy shit, I haven't heard of that since I owned a Super NES.

1:09 PM
@MDMarra Looks like objectClass is now indexed, since 2008 schema. However, it's still mutli-valued, so a single-value attribute (e.g. objectCategory) should work better. I also meant to ask about the rest of your filter if you're still mucking with it today.

Morning

@jscott Thanks for that technet article. That's going to be a good read for me.

1:25 PM
I am "<-------- this close ----------->" to seeing how well an iPad can fly.

iPads don't fly, but they do accelerate at 9.8m/s^2

@MichaelHampton I'm one floor up, so I don't think it would reach terminal velocity...

@tombull89 Go to a taller building.

@tombull89 Not if you give up that easy. Didn't you learn how to build a catapult in high school physics?

One of my friends has two fully functional trebuchets...

1:29 PM
@HopelessN00b nope...I could pop down to DT or Science and see what they've got though.

@tombull89 Or take this as an opportunity to develop some new skills you should have learned years ago. Seriously, a catapult comes in handy more often than you'd think. The neighbor's dogs never wake me up barking anymore, for example.

@jscott I put it off until Monday
Only so much Oracle DBA you can take in a given week, you know?

@ScottPack Another schema resource I really enjoy is Richard Mueller's schema/attribute spreadsheets -- they're aging, but a handy reference when MSDN isn't returning results quick enough.

@MDMarra If we don't TDI those schemas then we'll have to index the cell permissions to license the cores.

One more time in English?
Oh wait. That was the point wasn't it

1:38 PM
@jscott We'll see. For my purposes I just want to be able to write not-terrible queries when authenticating apps.
@MDMarra Affirmative.

Dan
Uh oh, no hotels available next week. My disorganisation has come to bite me

Still haven't had coffee yet. Give me a pass on that one

@MDMarra I'll allow it. I'm a few sips in but still feeling thick.

I also have a backward facing seat in the train. Not helping me get properly oriented this morning

@MDMarra poor boy.

1:41 PM
Toughest life, right?

@MDMarra I've only traveled backwards once, and that was on a plane. The staff mentioned that some people don't deal so well with it. Except for leaning the wrong way on take off and landing I don't think I even noticed it.

Well, our 2012 schema's objectClass has a searchFlag of 0x8 (PRESERVE_ON_DELETE) whilst objectCategory has 0x1 (INDEX) - so from where I sit, our objectClass still isn't indexed. O.o

Dan
@ScottPack Yeah, that orientation would be much safer for air safety but lots of people hate it

My dad doesn't like travelling backwards, I'm not fussed.

anyone in the UK have sky as their ISP ?

1:56 PM
@Iain Nope, know someone who works for their support/sales though.

It looks like O2 are selling their landline/ISP business to Sky - currently we're with sky

@Iain Yup, something like half a million people will be moved in the coming months.
