@DanBig Websense. In its defense, it's good at catching spam, and low false positive rate, though that seems to be par for the course, and not being able to customize it my-damn-self is a major irritant.

ah, i've used websense, but its been YEARS, and it was on a local server

We have an on-appliance filter (spamassassin) ...it does a fairly good job
plus DNSBLs

Yeah, their appliances may be a lot better in the writing-your-own-rules department, but we opted for the cloud offering. Grrr.

if i recall, it wasn't an appliance, it was just a windows machine running the software, and the cisco pix connected to it. (like i said, YEARS ago)

@HopelessN00b what rules would you write?

2:04 PM
@MichelZ Random one-off things to deal with one weird pain in the ass or another. For example, this fucking thing from a while back.

@HopelessN00b oh, makes sense!

On a different note... anyone see a problem with using Applocker auditing for ~1000 computers, and using Event Log forwarding to centralize the logs? Or should I expect that to go badly?

@HopelessN00b you should always expect everything to go badly, haven't you learned Murphys law by now? :)
@HopelessN00b do you have the eventlog forwarding already in place with the 1k devices? If so, is the server able to handle the additional load?

@DennisNolte Right, well, moreso than anything else, I mean. The scale kinda has me concerned, but hopefully my window-licking user base isn't launching applications that often.

@HopelessN00b Just wanted to mention I deleted your comment on that one question about migrating to Network Engineering - you were completely right, nothing wrong with the comment - as part of my vendetta again NE I eradicate all comments mentioning the site unless it's spectacularly justified.

2:14 PM
@DennisNolte No, and.. that's kinda the question. Hoping someone else has relevant experience to suggest whether this is more likely than usual to blow up in my face. :)

@HopelessN00b never underestimate that.. bear in mind that this could be already profiling and maybe regulated by law, depending where you live.

@ChrisS Oh, alright. Must be an old-ish question, as I have no recollection of it right now. :)

month ago... didn't even look at the date. The user is whining about targeted downboats on mSF

@DennisNolte Yeah, not worried about that, as I'm in the US... and have a general contempt for the law anyhow. :)

2:17 PM
@ChrisS Oh, god, it's that twerp? I had to exercise a lot of self control to keep from commenting on mSF whining.

Q: Can't log into MSDN on my newly provisioned Windows Server 2008 machine

SLCI need to access my MSDN subscription to start downloading and installing software on the machine I just provisioned with rackspace (windows server 2008 r2). I go to the msdn subscriber downloads page, and when I press get: This page can’t be displayed •Make sure the web address https://login....

Someone mind punting this to SU where it can rot?

@ChrisS why?

@NathanC Why? That doesn't seem quite appropriate for SU

@MichaelHampton downloading something with a browser is not appropriate for SU?

2:27 PM
Long story short: NE is 100% overlap with SF, normally SE doesn't allow those sites at all in A51 (they get closed, as the first and second NE proposals did). The most recent proposal whinged so badly that they "felt" SF was hostile to networking people (because of the word "server" in the name) that they needed to have their own site. SE made an exception on account of all this whining, and now some NE users like to pretend like SF never did networking.

where would you put it?

Caffeinate ALL THE THINGS! !!!
2

@ChrisS thx

Either the caffeine is taking too long to work this morning or I need to up my dose

17 Credits, 24hr/week internship, wife and 2 kids, it's real out here.

2:29 PM
@MichelZ We don't migrate crap

We don't migrate much at all... 3.4 Questions per day migrated out

@ChrisS I'm hostile to whiny bastards.

@ChrisS is that good or bad?

@MichelZ neither here nor there, but migrations result in about 0.3 Rejections per day. That's good.
Also inbound 0.2 Rejections per day. That's got to be the lowest I've ever seen.
I remember when we were looking at SO migrations carefully and rejecting 5-6 Questions daily just from SO.

2:45 PM
@ChrisS Now they don't migrate here, just post directly. And we have an overflowing close queue because of it...

@DanBig Same here, Forefront is powered by CloudMark and apparently spammers have been focusing on getting around their filters lately. We were using Spamhaus's Zen list, added Barracuda's to cut down quite a bit more, but still seeing plenty. I just keep shoveling false negatives over to their reporting address (forefront-spam@submit.cloudmark.com)

A: I'm being targeted for downvotes by nasty users

Michael HamptonThis question is based on false premises. First, prior to your posting the question this morning, you had received exactly two downvotes in the prior week, on two different posts, on two different days. This hardly screams "targeted" or "revenge" downvoting. Prior to that, you had a post roundl...

@MichaelHampton Maybe you could post a how-to guide to help this guy out. Something along the lines of how to not be a dumbass, whiny bitch seems appropriate.

Q: CentOS fails to update Bash

Elite_Dragon1337I'm trying to patch my server against the Shellshock vulnerability issue. However, I'm unable to update Bash to a safe version, these are the results I'm getting: # yum update bash Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, security Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile Skipping security plugin, no dat...

note: add lstn.net / limestonenetworks.com to my provider blacklist
not syncing your repos until now to get the bash patches out is just reckless

# bash --version
GNU bash, version 4.1.2(1)-release (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu)
it's okay, my CentOS 6.5 server's still waiting for its patch...

@NathanC even after you install the patch, that version will not change. Backported patches and all...

@NathanC You should be on 4.1.2-15.el6_5.2

3:06 PM
bash.x86_64 4.1.2-15.el6_5.2 @updates
according to yum list ..I don't know what the @ means, though

@NathanC It's very poorly documented. It basically means that that's the repo the package was installed from. Which is probably pointless and redundant information...

@MichaelHampton Basically...as it's in the "installed from" column anyway!
Debian server isn't upgrading...apparently the mirror I usually use is down.
wheeee

Bob
@NathanC Don't you have the debian security source?
The entire point is to avoid out-of-date mirrors.

Oh...it's not down...my server's suddenly trying to use ipv6

@NathanC Welcome to the 21st century!

3:14 PM
@MichaelHampton Heh. Apparently it's getting the ipv6 DNS names, but the server's not configured to use it.

3:26 PM
@MichaelHampton this is just LOL by the way :)

3:51 PM

Bob
@RyanRies ...and?
I mean, it's not really exploitable unless you have something that sets environment variables with untrusted data before calling bash.
I don't know the internals of git bash, but it'd be quite weird if it did that.

B... but it's funny because #Shellshock!

you could just binary patch it (openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2014/09/29/1)!

4:07 PM
@NathanC lol

4:36 PM
@ewwhite what was the command to fix the hardware monitoring on esxi again?

@pauska format c:?

4:48 PM
For some reason after using omxplayer it turns the command line cursor blue o.0

@DennisKaarsemaker Happy birthday, scumbag.

@Wesley thanks, kitten!

@DennisKaarsemaker 29 again?

@DennisKaarsemaker Fuck you and your youth!
=[

4:50 PM
@Wesley promises, promises

Oh hey @JoelESalas!
@DennisKaarsemaker You happy? You where you want to be in life?

@Wesley of course!

@DennisKaarsemaker That is a firmer answer than 99% of people would dare to give. :D

@pauska /sbin/services.sh restart

@Wesley I have other things that are firmer than 99% of people...

4:55 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Your rock hard abs are the thing that legends grow from.

kce
Yo.

@kce Suckah

kce
What up?
I see that SF's frontpage hasn't improved in my absence.

5:07 PM
lol
Windows 10
idiots

Why is Quagmire being all creepy?

Bob
@MichelZ wut.
:S

@Bob the "new" windows... is called windows 10
creepy

Bob
@MichelZ yea, I saw
"wut" is more my reaction to it

@Bob makes sense

5:11 PM
WTF - Windows 10?

kce
WUT? I thought it was supposed to be Windows 9? You know, because 9 comes after 8?

I was hoping they'd just drop the number altogether

kce
Maybe we're getting trolled.

@ChrisS yes
@kce yes

I figured Microsoft would skip 13 like they do for all their products that hit that version. But skipping 9 seems kinda silly.
WINDOWS NEIN

5:13 PM
@Wesley feels silly, yes
I'd expected windows 360 :D

@MichelZ windows 3000

Everyone is going to be talking about how MS still doesn't get it...

kce
Maybe Windows 8.1 is now Windows 9. Therefore Windows 9+ is Windows 10.
I should work in marketing.

I hate when they say sh*t like "Windows 10 will be our most comprehensive platform, ever." - Really? What a surprise!

Bob
> "Windows 10 is a very novel approach of separating corporate and personal data across all devices."
oh god.

5:16 PM
@ChrisS yeah, marketing... "look, there's a start menu now!!! greatest invention ever!!!"
"look, "apps" run in "windows" now! greatest invention ever!!
i think it is intentional
fuck it up first, then fix it with a big bang
me -> 98
vista -> 7
8 -> 10

Bob
@MichelZ ME came two years after 98

ah
right
was it me -> 2k?

Bob
more like 98 => 98SE, apparently
@MichelZ no

or like that

ME was the last in the non-NT line of Windows

Bob
5:18 PM
more like ME => XP

too long ago

Bob
as far as general consumer versions
2k was never really targeted towards consumers

Win2k was based on the NT4.0 API, but mostly a rewrite. Since then it's all been based on that codebase

yep
point is, ME was a fuckup
and they released a good version after it
:)

98 => XP => 7 => 10
always skip a version...

5:20 PM
ME was fine... The team already knew it was headed for the bit bucket and pushed out everything they had been working on in one last hurrah.
There is no 9

Bob
@ChrisS apparently major issues with stability though
much like Vista's driver issues
8 was relatively good - its issues were more UX

"windowed apps"
I love it

Oh gosh it's going to be Windows 10? By the time that gets out, it'll be competing with Mac OS XI.

@Bob I ran it for a couple years on my mom's IOpener - never had any real problems.

Bob
@ChrisS yea, supposedly very hit and miss
some (rare?) hardware would be flawless, others (most?) would fail spectacularly
I'm going on second-hand info here though

5:23 PM
Ah - suppose that could be the case then
I wish they'd get to the parts we care about: Price and Release Schedule

@ChrisS yep

And the download link....

Bob
lol

will be available after the show
the DL link

Bob
hm... wondering if I should dual-boot it in a vdk

5:26 PM
I think the multi-desktop thing is super gimmicky and nobody will use it.

Bob
did that for 8, and it worked pretty well

@ChrisS I have 6 screens... why would I use virtual desktops :)

@ChrisS multi desktop the way X and mac have done for ages?

Bob
@ChrisS Except all the people asking for it.

hmmm...i should make room on one of our ESXi hosts to put a tech preview up :p

5:27 PM
@NathanC make room for it? wtf?

@DennisKaarsemaker Yes. TBF MS had it in XP when you installed the PowerTools add-on. I think later versions might have had the same thing, but I never cared to find out.
@Bob Who?

@ChrisS I've never used that in over a decade of linux use...

@MichelZ Well, both hosts being at near 100% RAM usage...>.>

I used it 15 years ago
on 15" screens
but nowadays...
@NathanC overcommit... who cares

@MichelZ 15" 640x480 :)

Bob

Q: How to set four virtual desktops in Windows 8.1 like Ubuntu?

greenpokerI have started use Windows 8.1. I want to use four desktops like Ubuntu. It is possible?

When I found out about multi-desktops in GNOME (a million years ago) I used it for about 15 minutes. Never again since.

@DennisKaarsemaker yep
"Uh oh, we're going into... the command prompt!"

Improved command prompt :o

lol

kce
@ChrisS, @DennisKaarsemaker I use the heck out of virtual desktops in Linux but I'm on a 14" laptop.

@Bob 1 guy and 2 upboats... Not a resounding endorsement.

Bob
there's even more than that
that was just the first page
@ChrisS ^
took some time to copy all the links -_-

@Bob Ok - the first one in particular has quire a few upvotes. Not sure how many people would actually use it still

"You can now paste in directories into command prompt with Ctrl+V. FINALLY."
YAY - no more right-click bullshit

Bob
@ChrisS I've seen it requested quite a lot on other sites.

5:32 PM
fuck windows charm bar
they should remove that

I'm still super skeptical. I think people who have never used it think they want it. I'm pretty confident once they've tried it they'll never use it again.

Bob
@NathanC There's an option to copy-on-select and paste-on-right-click without the context menu, which PowerShell uses.
And PuTTY.
And I think xterm.

@ChrisS what exactly?

Bob
@ChrisS Eh, I also see the OS X equivalent used quite a lot.

@MichelZ Multi-Desktops

Bob
5:33 PM
Personally, I'd probably stick with my single maximised browser window with a billion tabs and abuse of alt+tab

@ChrisS ah yes. I can imagine on older laptops who do not have Full HD
but even then...
we'll see

@Bob Where exactly? (Not doubting you, no Mac user I know uses them, same with Linux, just wondering why I see such a different experience from what you've seen)

Bob
@ChrisS Quite literally see them do it on projectors.

@Bob Who though, in what setting?

Bob
Then again, I'm not interested enough in Macs, so I tend to ignore them most of the time. Maybe I just caught the three people in the world who actually use it.
@ChrisS Just... people? I can't really say there's anything distinctive about them.

5:37 PM
Sales guys, managers? Business, education, home use?

Bob
@ChrisS Eh, if you really want a category, education probably fits best.
Maybe home use (aka private use).
I'm not exposed much to OS X at work (:D)
Or at home.

That's a bit of what I suspected - areas where I don't see people using Macs and Linux much, so maybe I'm just completely missing a demographic where people use multiple desktops all the time.
I'd rather just have 2-3 monitors... And if I can't, I'd rather just minimize applications than try to switch between different desktops. Seems really cumbersome..

Bob
@ChrisS I have actually been in situations where it might have helped me - several windowed programs, say terminal windows, that I want tiled, and where I might need to switch between them and other programs.

I wouldn't be able to work without virtual desktops. No way.

@Bob Sure, there's odd cases where I've thought that exact same thing, but so few and far between....

Bob
5:42 PM
MDI might have worked too, if I wanted to switch terminal emulators. But virtual desktops don't require support from the program.

@ChrisS Virtual desktops work for certain kinds of organizational minds

kce
@ChrisS Oh look at Mr. BigShot with multiple monitors.

multi-monitor works for a different subset

@voretaq7 I don't doubt that. I just doubt how often it's going to be used in Windows.

and then there's people like me who grew up with ^Z, bg, and fg

5:43 PM
@kce I would die without 2 monitors at work.

"Iffin ya can't keep the running programs straight in your mind you're too addle-brained to be a sysadmin!"

Well maybe not die, but would be 25% less efficient according to most studies. Everyone here has 2-4 monitors.

Bob
@ChrisS Then again, there's a lot of features on Windows that are rarely-used.
Just how many people actually use the charms bar? -_-

@Bob I've got plenty of 4-letter words for the Charms bar.

kce
@ChrisS I've asked and been told no.

Bob
5:44 PM
@ChrisS "good", "like", "love"?

@kce literally nobody has less than 2 here. They are way, way too cheap for the efficiency gains.

@Bob I didn't realize you were Canadian.

kce
@ChrisS I would love them but our leadership is very much into single, high res, high def monitors and using the Windows Snap functionality.

Bob
@ChrisS Now would be the perfect time to call you a cunt. So: you're a cunt.
(<=== australian)

5:46 PM
@Bob Now you sound English. Can I get you a crumpet with your tea?

Bob
uwot

F-, can't get Windows 10 until "tomorrow"

@MichaelHampton "Unplug the red wire."

@MichaelHampton nope nope nope

@ChrisS Make sure you put it up on a torrent for us so we can ripz it!

5:58 PM
Will do

@Travis Or you could you know...join the preview? lol

@NathanC I'm not cool enough for that!

"Q: Now it's Windows 10, will we see future versions named after big cats?"
"A: Probably not"
lol - that's great

@ChrisS It's going to be dogs. They already had Windows Vizsla.

April Fools got it right for once - infoworld.com/article/2613504/microsoft-windows/…

At least 2/3 of Tweets about Win10 are mocking the version number. Very few are talking seriously about features

6:11 PM
No different than Android users tweeting nonsensical stuff about the iPhone 6

6:21 PM
@ChrisS The start menu is back. What other features do you want?

@MichaelHampton I don't know if I saw a Tweet talking about the start menu actually...

" When I click the Start icon I get the Start Menu." REVOLUTIONARY! Good they brought it back #win10 http://t.co/a7Acga7vBT

revolutionary!
windowed apps
it blows my mind

6:42 PM
So Microsoft is going with a "Debian Sid" thing for the Windows 10 preview?

Heh, the Windows Blog site crumbled under the load

Database Error
Does not give me warm fuzzies about tomorrow's registration and download process

Bob
@jscott Huh?

Bob
@jscott What was that about sid, though?

6:47 PM
heh, it spun for a good minute then loaded

@Bob Just the warnings about not installing the preview if you're not comfortable with frequent, potentially breaking changes/updates.

Bob
@jscott Ah.
Pretty standard with any preview/beta though.

Maybe when W10 is released, it will as simple as having WSUS track the Stable branch.
@Bob Yes... I'm not too proud to admit it was a poor attempt at a "joke" on my part.

They eluded to a more continuous release schedule, but really didn't come out and say it... I hate MS press talks because they're so vague and full of Marketing BS.

@ChrisS build talks are way better.

7:02 PM
hey folks

@RyJones Yep, also the techtalks are usually great
And then there was @Basil

this is just a dressed up presser

@ChrisS In the flesh, fresh from the datacenter
haven't had to go there physically in months

@RyJones Presser? I hardly know 'er!

@Wesley yarrrr

7:09 PM
ugh...I had some source files mysteriously vanish, but in the process completely messed up my git repo so I can't git push

@NathanC --force because everyone who isn't me sucks!

@Wesley Yeah...it pushed the repo even further behind

I must be using git wrong. I never have these problems

@RyJones I screwed up a revert...basically.

7:26 PM
Huh. New badges. Explainer and Refiner and whatever the gold one's called.
Wonder if we'll ever get a Scarecrow badge for chasing off low-quality users.

@HopelessN00b new badges! where is it? how do i get it?

7:42 PM
"Edited 1 question within 12 hours of posting a positive-scoring answer."

@faker Huh, I don't see it on the site yet
...nevermind.
I don't get the point of the badge though...

the point is that you clarify a question and provide an answer to it too
I have my doubts that this happens often. Most badges are probably awarded to "fixed formatting" edits...

ohh....i see
The way it's worded it could mean editing a question and posting an answer on a different one

It'd be interesting to be able to see progress towards those badges

@Iain There's quite a few badges that don't have progress indicators...

7:52 PM
@NathanC yep

64. Hm. That's going to take a while.

@faker I've actually done that a fair bit. Usually with ESL-issues or the like, where the question's unclear because the asker doesn't know quite how to phrase it.

@MichaelHampton I don't think it's quite right - it suggests Ed should have the gold badge

@MichaelHampton I have...7.
lol

Q: Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

AHungerArtistWhen I was a kid, I heard a lot of people talking about where to find this place. However, I've not yet been able to locate it. Could someone please tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, preferably with a map image clearly pointing it out.

Nice to see painful amounts of fail in places other than our main page every once in a while.

@MichaelHampton I have fond memories of that game and TV show. So I'm going to avoid pulling it up on YouTube to be reminded of how low my standards used to be.

temped to answer that with a map of the solar system and an arrow pointing to Earth.
Subscript: This is the location of Carmen Sandiego and of Mr Bin Laden.
