00:00 - 16:0016:00 - 00:00

12:00 AM
yay!

I mean you met me IRL @RyJones - I don't think I'm that big
I mean, I'm really short

@JourneymanGeek that is the "belongs in jail" one

(1206 - form we use when something is damaged due to carelessness, and they want to make you pay for it)

@cole I wasn't going to mention that you're really short, but you are really short. I'm also really fat, so everyone looks skinny by comparison

I am super short
I'm ok with it.

12:01 AM
If its just replacement, its another form, though occationally we used to maliciously destroy stuff so we could use it.

It's not going to change so lol

Just tell em "Judge me by my height do you?"

i mean I dont think I look short there

you seriously need some fight club nihilism in your life, @cole

heh

12:02 AM
call me fat? I will kill your parents and feed them to you.
I guess that's south park, whatever

i was like "alright"

yes, that's it, the slow burn, make him think shit's chill for a decade before you spring it on him

and he says
"Cole, brother - nothing phases you."
"Nope."

nice

12:07 AM
should make nice, gender-specific carbines for my daughters

Meanwhile - my ex fiance who looks like this is coming over: scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/…
so he can call me fat all he wants
I'm getting sesame chicken because of @MichaelHampton

@RyJones Meh...I'm waiting until we can 3D print lowers.

@MichaelHampton I've cut 80% lowers, which is faster and cheaper.

@RyJones Yes, but...I have access to a 3D printer!

@MichaelHampton have fun

when I can buy new 100% lowers for $35, the urge to print them is pretty low.
@MichaelHampton no, he didn't.

@RyJones Yeah, the headline is misleading. But one thing you should know about print journalism is that the person who writes the article is usually not the person who writes the headlines.

this beer - unf.

@MichaelHampton IDGAF. He printed a lower, golf clap, very good. As I said, that's a $35 component. He then stuck all the expensive bits to it to make an actual rifle.

@RyJones The price of the component is not the point. The gun controls, or the inefficacy thereof, that's the point.

12:23 AM
@MichaelHampton really? talk to me about Elvis.

@RyJones Who?

That point was made decades ago. Yes, the bar gets lower, and right now it's pretty low. You can make a lower cheaper (and better) out of cutting boards.
or even those screw-together builds, those are way more functional.

Yes, today they are.

I wouldn't 3D print a gun for use today unless it was a dire emergency.

12:25 AM
etc
If I wanted to make an ar15 lower out of plastic, I'd cast it. Way easier than printing.

I need to get my CCW

@RyJones The DC tech position made an offer

@Jacob congratulations. Go for it.

@RyJones not yet

@Jacob true, accepting an offer at 8pm on a friday would be odd

12:29 AM
@RyJones No. It's not in writing yet, and I had someone else email me and setup a phone screen. There's still hope for that job in Seattle too

@Jacob it's great to be wanted

@RyJones I had no idea lol
Sysadmin day has finished pretty well after a dull start

@Jacob awesome dude

heh, listening to Indian co-workers argue over where the bug is
programs are always "this fellow" or "the other fellow"

whoa big sneeze
/yawn
I'm going to fall asleep before my food and friend get here

12:41 AM
Coffee can fix that.

But...beer
It's so good

Stout/Porter + coffee = So good.
My personal favorite is the seasonal Saranac Caramel Porter with chilled coffee. About 50/50. Fan-freaking-tastic.

oooo

you buy that. you drink that.

Wow, I'm not much on rum, but that sounds really good.

12:44 AM
oooooooooooh
Yeah me either but dang

It is really good. Be sure to shake the bottle to get the sediment into the drink.

I had root beer on draft from allstonsfinest.com the other night SO GOOD

well, there, I started a bunch of crap at 17:47 on Friday. Time to bail.

Write-Only Friday.

lol
I missed beer so much

12:55 AM
Whatcha drinking? My current pour is a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot.

So - my boss and coworker went to this place called Hopsters
it was a vendor sponsored event and they brewed their own beer. Drinking a Triple Oaked IPA
Coworker gave me the whole case

Whoa. That'a a score.
$150-$230 for a 7.5 gallon batch isn't too bad considering you don't need to buy any ingredients, equipment, bottles, etc. I wonder if they make you clean the equipment after your boil is done.

@RyJones I've always wondered if indglish is English in a colonial time warp or a full blown mutant

1:26 AM
sup gents

@JourneymanGeek at this point there are probably more speakers of indglish than English

1:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's a mutant, I think. And I suspect it will continue to diverge from English.

1:52 AM
@MichaelHampton you should join me over at slashnet/#gunblogger_conspiracy
lots of like-minded types there.

yay, slashnet.
@RyJones: kinda sorta, some of us still speak fairly standard english, merely accented.

@JourneymanGeek sure.

2:35 AM

2 hours later…
4:17 AM
Wow, I never quite imagined that my campground Wi-Fi service would actually help me answer a question.

4:35 AM

A: Mirror/Cache Websites on a Mobile Server

Michael HamptonI actually set up something very similar to this once a year for a week-long event that's held in the middle of nowhere, so I have a little experience to share. First, the TL;DR: You can do it, but it won't work nearly as well as you (or your higher-ups) might hope. It might not be worth botheri...

oh, cool

I need to finish writing that article series, too.

4:51 AM
The real problem, though, with writing an answer on Saturday morning is that nobody will ever see it.

5:19 AM
@MichaelHampton that is true.

@ewwhite Oh, I'll probably stealth edit it on Monday morning

I use Trello to stage the questions I plan to ask.

hey, all! happy Sysadmin Appreciation Day!

5:34 AM
OK, this gliffy thing is pretty nice
Though, I suspect I am terrible at network design.

@MichaelHampton "PorcFest 2014" sounds like a porn convention

@strugee Well, there were live bondage shows...
2
Unfortunately I never managed to make it to one.

@MichaelHampton that took me a minute, but now
dying

And that was my vacation.

5:50 AM
sigh... time to go get my bottom-of-the-barrel SSL cert
from StartSSL.

@strugee And of course there was the stripper pole...

@MichaelHampton now that one, I don't get

@strugee Ahh, let me find a good picture...

@MichaelHampton unless that wasn't a pun and you meant an actual stripper pole

@MichaelHampton the burlesque shows at norwescon are fun.

5:56 AM
@strugee Yes, an actual stripper pole.

@MichaelHampton you know he's 15, right?

@Magellan OK, I'll choose a slightly different picture, then :)
flickr.com/photos/11088513@N05/14551460641/in/… I don't think there's anything TOO disturbing in there...

6:18 AM
@MichaelHampton ah. gotcha.
@Magellan :P

Now if you want a really disturbing image...

Java is a bad parody of C++ and you shouldn't use it and you shouldn't teach other people to use it, and with a straight face how could you?

@Tanner Got it! You need to focus on killing those work samples.

@Tanner hey do you want to add another possible job to the mix, since you're apparently looking?

@FalconMomot hiss
:P

6:24 AM
@Wesley screech!!!!!!
lol

@FalconMomot Tanner is in your neck of the woods
Or... one of your necks
...wood necks?

@Wesley perfect!
seattleite?

@FalconMomot Roughly, yeah

@Wesley I think our companies are basically opposites so really there's no competition :)
well maybe they aren't
since we also have infinite work from home
shrug

@FalconMomot No Windows, lots of *nix... so there's that.

6:25 AM
I want a sysadmin!
stomps feet
@Wesley we're all like... whatever you want dude

Okay, okay, the finance guy has a Windows box because there's not much he can't do with Excel.

Dude can whip up an unmanned interstellar rover with Excel.

Hitachi ID is like that also
(not with excel, with linux)

@FalconMomot Yeah, exactly. When I've interviewed, I've told people "We don't care if you buy an old NeXT cube and put BeOS on it. As long as you're happy and can do stuff."

6:26 AM
and everyone chooses linux without fail :P

@FalconMomot Here's it's Macs, but yeah. Whatever.

vomit

We're not that trendy. =P

I'm not sure I could tolerate working for your company ;)
also I think I'd be forever setting people on fire for using java

@FalconMomot Java really seems like a lot of unnecessary pain.

6:30 AM
yeah
the guy with that thing you tweeted is mostly right

The fact that a JVM can run on anything really makes it hard to ignore the platform though

meh
I don't see a lot of mileage come from that
I mean certainly if I write an android app in java I can't do much with that code besides that

@Wesley #python

6:31 AM
So, so hard to get those java pids to scale

@FalconMomot: somehow I would assume be-stickered old model thinkpads would what you'd find hackers using.

@JourneymanGeek it's actually rather common...
also thinkpads are standard issue where I work

@FalconMomot: for good reason

yup
well

@JourneymanGeek I'll use whatever I can get my hands on.

6:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek minnix on a micromax pc

there are also problems

especially IBM era ones (they actually had better keyboards)

everyone be typing on cherry mx greens

... greens?

sometimes on blues

6:33 AM
And what the hell is with laptops with chicklet keyboards?

@FalconMomot Fuck those damn keyboards right in the ear. Freaking things making it so hard for me to think.

greens are basically stiffer blues

@MichaelHampton: fracking apple ;p

@MichaelHampton oh my god DAMN

@Wesley: eh. I use blues.

6:33 AM
@Wesley muahahahahahahahahahahahaHAHAHA!

@FalconMomot: yeah, I just thought they were uncommon ;p

those bug the crap out of me

@Wesley we will put you in jail and everyone else will be typing essays on greens and blues

Get a room full of those damn keyboards and that's why I have tinnitus because I have to crank my headphones so loud it starts altering my vision.

@strugee you can serve time with him

6:33 AM
eh. I may switch to something quieter in future

@Wesley have you not heard of the noise cancelling headphones?
most people have them at work :D

@FalconMomot I've got some that are pretty good I guess. Shure 205s or something
No 215s
I can't afford the 525s like @ewwhite can

well then...

@FalconMomot oi! I didn't say I was going to fuck the keyboards, just that I disliked them!

6:35 AM
@strugee oh, the jail has more to do with that thing with the chickens a few years ago.

@FalconMomot He did what to a chicken?

@strugee ^

@FalconMomot but why am I being looped into his jail time?!

shrug
that poor bird...

really though

6:37 AM

@FalconMomot Strugee's dad is Lazarwolf!

oh no, that will be an extra couple decades for sure...

G'dday

@strugee You're chicken corruptions are now public knowledge. For shame.
@Iain NERF! NERF! NERF!

6:38 AM
they are doing this by the way, and it's quite normal:
Kapparot (Hebrew: כפרות‎, Ashkenazi pronunciation, Kapporois, Kappores) is a Jewish ritual practiced by some Jews on the eve of Yom Kippur. The person swings a live chicken or a bundle of coins over one's head three times, symbolically transferring one's sins to the chicken or coins. The chicken is then slaughtered and donated to the poor for consumption at the pre-fast meal. == Etymology == Kapparah [כפרה], the singular of kapparot, means "atonement" and comes from the Hebrew root k-p-r which means "to atone". == Practice == In the Jewish religious practice of Kapparot, a cockerel literally...

@Wesley O_O

How are we all ?

@Iain pretty good, and yourself?

@Iain I'm gainfully employed so that still pretty much trumps everything else going on.

I really should go back to setting up my mail server now

6:41 AM
fab :) cool enough for a bike yet ?

45C here, dust storms raging across the desert floor, and I still have no bike, but I'm working so that's nice. =P
@Iain Cross-posted! =D
I've got to get over to REI to have them build my surly
Then I can get back to contributing to the strava group
I bet I lost all my leg gains

It's 27C here late in the afternoon and that's too much for me really

@FalconMomot: nuu

I have almost no stamina.

noise cancelling is useless there.
You want lots of passive noise attenuation

6:42 AM
@Iain Well then you are in a perfect locality. I bet it starts getting cooler in late August?

@Wesley Legs will come back quickly

@JourneymanGeek Jab a pencil in your ears and stir it around. You'll be fine.

hey, when did appear?

@Wesley see, you could come to the motherland of REI where the flagship is, and work for leviathan!

@Wesley: dude. I spent three years hunting for my headphones

6:43 AM
@Wesley Well before then - this is unusually warm

@FalconMomot I don't want to job hop. =(

@strugee it may have been my fault

@FalconMomot still no SA ?

@Iain nothing yet
I'm trying to cover my bets atm :)
and I mean, the more people apply, the better we get

@FalconMomot ah. well then

6:54 AM
Night, bunny wabbits.
Here's that Fifty Shades of Gr[e|a]y trailer you've all been dying for:
/me flees

@Wesley you suck

s/for/of
also, I think grey is spelled americanly as gray. This is ENTIRELY your fault, you misbegotten delinquents.

1 hour later…
7:59 AM
Happy sysadmin day hangover day!

8:12 AM
morning

8:29 AM
morning!

4 hours later…
12:55 PM
Morning
here we go - upping the FFL and DFL!

1:22 PM
DONE! We are successfully NT4 free and on a DFL of 2008.

@cole: clearly you need to find a NT4 disk, and put it on a burning model boat.

1:51 PM
@cole WTF FFL BBQ DFL?

Pretty lame that I'm this excited about it

@pauska forest functional level / domain functional level
@cole and now there's no going back :D

ah.

@MichelZ indeed.

ohai @cole
welcome in the 21st century
we have cookies and flying cars

2:05 PM
Thanks

so... How many XP boxes do you guys have?

1700
But, I think that number is shrinking. Just found out we still have $3 Million left in the budget from our laptop roll out this year (1500 field users went from XP to 7)
So that's next.

oh well then, at least you are not running out of work

@cole you could pay those 3 mill to get support for XP from microsoft
this way you don't need to upgrade for another year or two
:D

Fuck that.

2:15 PM
lol

Or use the 3 mill to buy support for Dead Rat ;-)

I really am just so happy

I was just dreaming about rolling freebsd out to a bunch of k-12 schools
so insane

2:30 PM
@RyJones Clearly.
It would have to be Edufreebsd
like edubuntu
"let's put a typing app in ubuntu then say it's targeted to kids!"

Q: Which hypervisor to play nice with docker.io

StephanI have been running several different virtualisation servers, (ESXi, XenServer, Proxmox/KVM) in the past. I am now in a position where I need to set up a new virtualisation environment that is supposed to be long running. I figured it might be a good idea to be prepared for Docker as it comes up ...

My PC is being a dick.
I just rebuilt it like 2 months ago and weird shit keeps breaking.

rebuilt it? as removing all the parts and putting it back together?

No, just formatted it and reinstalled Windows.
Blergh I need new monitor and a new graphics card too.

I can't decide really.. new GPU or Xbox One
all I play lately is fifa..

2:42 PM
That's the issue I'm having.
I really want Destiny for Xbox One
not 360
but also there's a bunch of PC games coming out I really want - especially the new Civilization game

2:59 PM
I used to love civ 1.
and 3 was nice
I tried 4 and 5, but meh. Either to easy or (at the harder levels) the computer cheats.

3:11 PM
define wierd shit?

"Thanks for the help, I will tip everyone in BTC for help." wtf...

lol
Oh, thankfully that's a problem I won't have anytime soon ;p

Question was updated, this answer is not accurate anymore. — Giedrius Rekasius 49 secs ago
this guy is trying too hard
anyway, are you people working on a Saturday, or just hanging out?

I was working.

:(

3:16 PM
Now I'm playing Wildstar and realizing I really need a new graphics card.

@cole: the joys of a shitty monitor ;p

@JourneymanGeek really need new monitors, too
These both are like 5-6 years old.

@cole: oh, mine's 720p

3:18 PM
Can't decide do I replace both 22" w/ 22"s, 24"s or a 27" and a 22 or 24"

its newish but basically I set a budget (140 dollars) and minmaxed the best I could get.
I think its a 20 incher, DVI and VGA only
But I can run quite a few games on ultra settings without any issues on a gforce 660

I'm thinking replacing with two 24"s
27" is too big I think
Yesterday I told my sister it was SysAdmin Appreciation Day - she responded with "oh awesome! I'll get you a wrist brace for your impending carpal tunnel!"
My sister is kind of a dick.
haha

lol. Depends on your desk

It's a small IKEA Galant desk

then yeah
I might be able to pull that off on my frankendesk

3:32 PM
This is how it looks currently

thats quite nice

Not bad, just need new monitors

lemme see if I can find a recent, showelled off picture of mine ;p

Reason to just buy two new 22"s would be because I already have this mount

hm, no
lol. I was pondering building one out of copper pipe and MDF

3:36 PM
It was only $30, but still

waste not want not
(also, the usual problem with obsolete gear. WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?)

@JourneymanGeek I try to sell older stuff before nobody wants it anymore.

I'd probably have more space if I put my desktop on the floor
@MichaelHampton: We tend to run things to the ground. ;p

@JourneymanGeek Yes, I gathered that. Obviously this is a problem :)

;p
(this is true of everything. Our dryer is a marvel of mcgyverism)

3:41 PM
Oh, I understand the wish to keep things in good repair and use them as long as possible. This just generally isn't a good strategy with computer hardware since its useful life is so short. A dryer can be useful for decades. But even a 10 year old computer isn't very useful.

lol
our dryer is held closed by a hard drive magnet and a bit of steel from a old case, and the fan is kept running by a large o ring acting as a fan belot.
Oh, that is true
especially with gaming boxen
(but... the fax machine that's taking up most of my spares box?)

I haven't sent or received a fax in several years. But at least the "fax machine" is part of my multifunction copier/printer/scanner thing, all the rest of which are still useful.

lol
no, I mean a carbon paper fax
we have a MFD. Its an awesome canon I love to bits
(assuming you find the correct driver for remote printing, and it didn't decide to disconnect from wifi and....)
we however occationally keep stuff like that 'in case'

@JourneymanGeek Don't you guys have flea markets? Or craigslist? Or...something?

@MichaelHampton: meh, I'd just throw it out
my dad seems to think it may be usful
I've given away stuff in the past

3:47 PM
@JourneymanGeek You could drop it on the head of a burglar? Otherwise I can't think of much...

(and we sometimes hand down/up systems)

I'm ready for a dang nap.

pretty much
My old c2d (upgraded to windows 7) is theoratically my mom's
also, thermal fax machine. You can beat AND Strangle a burgler with it.

and I probably should go to sleep. I'm being vaguely incoherent, and need to waste my sunday afternoon at the army. Again.

3:50 PM
@ewwhite I do believe that ILO flipped you the bird.

@ewwhite ooh. Try setting BLOCK_SIZE to 2048

@DennisKaarsemaker it's a local ILO...

I haven't tested that change on iLO1 as I no longer have them. Also, I'm not sure update_rib_firmware is supposed to work via XML on ilo1. Try from the machine self using -Plocal

and now I see hponcfg says a firmware flash is in progress... and has been so for a month

3:52 PM
 hponcfg -w
HP Lights-Out Online Configuration utility
Version 4.3.0 Date 12/10/2013 (c) Hewlett-Packard Company, 2014
Firmware Revision = 1.94 Device type = iLO Driver name = hpilo
Firmware flash is in progress.Please wait for a while.

that's definitely not caused by the attempt just now, as that broke sending the first 64k of the firmware
and flash doesn't get initiated until it's all been sent

sooooo old

that background imae still gives me nightmares
