12:22 AM
@ScottPack Have you paid for a sporan?

The only time I've worn a sporran it was rented.

@ScottPack D=

12:39 AM
@WesleyDavid Why the gaping maw?

12:52 AM
@ScottPack That you don't own your own sporan and kilt!
Some Scott Scot.

Sorry mate.
Those things are expensive.
The one I rented for our wedding would have cost more, to purchase, than my wife's dress.

@ScottPack Seriously, that's how you exert dominance in a relationship.
Be F A B U L O U S!!

Don't you know it!

Whew. Continuous Delivery meeting went ok

1:09 AM
I love invoicing for hardware. Click a few buttons on the supplier website; they deliver it for free directly to the end client, I put 20% on the price and send out an invoice. Assuming they never need to return it for RMA it's basically free money.

@MarkHenderson Do you guys charge tax on HW?

@JoelESalas "Gentlemen! I propose we do stuff. All the time!" "Hear hear!" "Then it's settled!"

@WesleyDavid Pretty much is how it went

@JoelESalas Drinks for everyone!

@MarkHenderson Tell me about it. Stud.

1:14 AM

@ScottPack I don't do it often. Maybe 3 times a year.
Not enough to make a living off but enough to buy me a new toy

Does it take D cell batteries?

@ScottPack Whoah how big are your vibrating butt plugs?
Mine take AA thankyou
In this case the new toy will be not having an outstanding bill :(

What...I'm not even going to ask.

1:18 AM
@ScottPack Holy shit they have a battery that lasts for 100 years?

@MarkHenderson That bad? =/

No wait they just wrote it poorly
@WesleyDavid Well none of them are currently overdue
But if someone came and dropped a few grand in my lap I know where it would all go
We're one of the masses who basically lives payday to payday. We have an emergency fund that could cover us for 3 months if our income dropped to $0 over night - and after those 3 months we have insurance if the reason we can't work is because of an injury
But apart from that, pay comes in and is basically fully distributed within 12 hours of it coming in, every week

@MarkHenderson Wow. That's much better than the vast majority of Americans.

@ScottPack With a mortgage as big as ours we made it a priority

Sucks when you answer a SF question "wrong" because you work in shitty environments.
/headdesk
That's why I only have 3,353 rep. after 3 years.

1:26 AM
@ScottPack Next toy I want to make is a quadcopter
But they be expensive :(

@MarkHenderson it would make your commute easier.

@MarkHenderson Are you making headway on the principle or are you just barely covering the interest?
Not that it's my business...

@ScottPack Commute is a 7 minute drive. 10 minutes on a bad day
I could program it to fly shit from here to home though ;)

@MarkHenderson Yeah, same as mine. Sucks doesn't it? :)

@WesleyDavid Well, when our mortgage was $250,000 we were destroying the principle. We would have had it done in 10 years, we were paying about double the minimum repayments. Now that the mortgage is almost double we are paying more than we used to, but the interest is substantially larger. So yes, we're covering additional principal over the minimum repayments, but not by as much as I'd like
@ScottPack Totally. I timed it and I spend about 3 minutes of those 7 minutes sitting at big intersections. If the lights were timed in my favour I'd do even better

1:34 AM
@MarkHenderson Mine is 7-12 minutes, depending on traffic, but is 1.5 miles straight through the city centre.
I could skirt around, but it wouldn't speed things up at all.

@ScottPack Wow. Straight through the city center here takes about 40 minutes

My city is slightly smaller.

Not that I work anywhere near the city :P

I live on the east side and work on the west side.

I drove to the city the other day - cost me $12 in tolls each way

1:36 AM
Fuck tolls.

It's about 60 minutes with tolls, or about 2.5 hours without them
It seemed a worthwhile trade
THey're all e-tolls though so you don't have to stop, so the traffic flows very well

The toll road here just opened the E-Z pass lanes where you don't even have to slow down.

feel guilty now. 8 minutes by car. an hour ? screw that

@MichaelHampton Really? All the toll roads here use that exclusively, no cash.

@MichaelHampton They're brilliant. They had them in the city I used to live in 10+ years ago (non-stop, non-slow ones), but only 9 months ago did they get rid of the last stop-and-pay-cash tollgates here

Who'dve thought tollgates could look nice? :P

@ShaneMadden Meh. E-470 doesn't interoperate with anybody else's toll system. Jackasses.

@MichaelHampton Interoperability? Where's the fun in that?

we don't even have those toll chips anymore
number plates are read, processed and given a status light in about 0.2 seconds

Toll booths... and open-road tolling.

1:54 AM
@pauska We've had them the whole time, but there was always a surcharge on them. They've ditched the surcharge now, but I still use a tag, because the numberplate on the car is linked to my boss's account but the tag is on my account

There's a company here that manages the systems that do that.. it's the producepro of the tolling world.
they are ALWAYS looking for a Linux sysadmin

@ewwhite I've read about how the systems work here. They seem terribly antiquated

E‑ZPass is an electronic toll-collection system used on most tolled roads, bridges, and tunnels in the northeastern United States, south to North Carolina, and west to Illinois. Currently, there are 25 agencies spread across 14 states that make up the E‑ZPass Interagency Group (IAG). All member agencies use the same technology, allowing travelers to use the same E‑ZPass transponder throughout the IAG network. Various independent systems that use the same technology have been integrated into the E‑ZPass system. These include I‑Pass in Illinois, NC Quick Pass ...

@MichaelHampton: we have something like that nationwide too :/

@JourneymanGeek Nation? You live in a city-state on an island!

1:58 AM
@MichaelHampton I-Zoom, E-ZPass, my god why do they come up with such horrible names?

@MichaelHampton: its still a nation with delusions of mega-corpness!

@MarkHenderson And you can do any better? :)

The Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) (; ) system is an electronic toll collection scheme adopted in Singapore to manage traffic by way of road pricing, and as a usage-based taxation mechanism to complement the purchase-based Certificate of Entitlement system. The ERP was implemented by the Land Transport Authority in September 1998 to replace the Singapore Area Licensing Scheme after successfully stress-testing the system with vehicles running at high speed. Singapore was the first city in the world to implement an electronic road toll collection system for purposes of congestion pricing...

I do not much care for acronym reuse.
@MDMarra Hey sweetness.

@MichaelHampton I dunno. Ours are called E-Tags, so I guess that's not much better
Well better than I-Zoom
And Any of your "Z" based puns don't work here

2:02 AM
@MarkHenderson Zed?

@MichaelHampton Correct

@ScottPack: we joke it also stands for everyday rob people.

I-Zed-Oom?
@JourneymanGeek Enterprise Resource Planning?

@ScottPack: there's only so many TLAs ;p

@MichaelHampton OOh I need one of those for the WV turnpike
Dammit shit is falling apart. Anyone want to listen to my problems?

2:06 AM
@Jacob Only if your problems are better than @ewwhite's problems.

@MichaelHampton They're nontechnical so I doubt it

which they are not

I only give one type of advice: the hard kind. So far I've yelled at Jacob, at Kevin Reallylongsurname, and most recently Ryan Ries. So consider yourself pre-warned

@MarkHenderson I was there :)

@MarkHenderson Australians suck. they smell like poo. suck, ya hear?
:)

2:12 AM
@pauska You're European, so I immediately have an infinite percentage more respect for you
Not only are you European but you come from one of the cool european countries too. Not like Hungary or Serbia

well to be honest, I've never heard anyone here in Norway talk bad about australia or the people there
lots of youths travel down to "study" for a year

australians do indeed suck.

@pauska Because you're white and we're awesome. We're not so friendly to people with darker skin. "Comfortably Racist" was a term thrown around not long ago

@MarkHenderson that's intriguing - considering the history on how australia was populated to begin with..

In America it's an all out color and socioeconomic standoff.

2:17 AM
@pauska We have, for no reason I can fathom or understand, a particular dislike to lebanese people
10 years ago it was asians, but our economy pretty much sits on the back of China at the moment so the asian hate has gone away

Just got a Youtube ad for tampons. Way to target ads Google...

@Sirex Yeah we're pole smokers. Beats being a sheep fucker though.
@pauska We have a huge problem with discrimination against the indigenous population here

@Mark i'm english, it gets worse.

We treat our indigenous people horrendously

I presume that the racists are unaware that their country was built by Indonesians and convicts? kind of like 'MERICA?

2:19 AM
@pauska You're unqualified to use that term.

@pauska Absolutally. In the 50's and 60's we begged for immigrants to come build our nation, and now all we do is tell them to fuck off

@pauska in fairness they only really built round the edges, then threw the towel in.

@MarkHenderson My grandma told me that story today. You people wanted my grandfather to build things...

@Jacob: tampons are useful for other things too!

HEre's something for everyone, including @WesleyDavid

2:21 AM
@pauska: america was built by indonesians?

@JourneymanGeek ..

Q: Windows Server 2003 - Block outgoing traffic of program

MartinI need to run a program on Windows Server 2003. I need all in AND out traffic to AND from this program to be blocked, EXCEPT if the origin/destination is 127.0.0.1. I have to only block this one executable, I can't block all programs/ports on the computer. Windows Firewall on Server 2003 can on...

"Fuck off, we're full" it says. What a joke. We're a land mass almost the size of America with 1/10th the population

someone trying to get around software protection?
@MarkHenderson yeah, but to be fair 9/10 is like Arizona.. Would you like that filled up with @WesleyDavid 's?

@MarkHenderson Yeah, but isn't 90% of it uninhabitable desert?

2:23 AM
I was just looking at that, so why not paste it :)

aus needs an areas 51 out in the middle somewhere. spice things up a bit
well, like area 51, but with roo's forcing the jets to do go-rounds now and then.

2:39 AM
@MarkHenderson You need to yell at more people.

2:55 AM
Sorry was at lunch

EXCUSES

@pauska Hmm he whines a lot about bikes, so he's basicall a hipster. We already have a lot of them
@MichaelHampton Yea but the remainding 10% is still very much empty. We all crammed into the major cities and that's it

@MarkHenderson Yeah, well, the "Grasslands" ought to be farmable, at least to some extent.

@Sirex We have one. It's called Woomera Testing Range
The RAAF Woomera Test Range (WTR, previously known as the Woomera Test Facility, the Woomera Rocket Range, and the Long Range Weapons Establishment, Woomera) is a weapons testing range operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Aerospace Operational Support Group. The range facility itself is located in South Australia, in that State's north-west pastoral region. The gateway to the Range is the Defence support base Woomera, long referred to as 'Woomera Village'. The Woomera support base is located approximately north-west of Adelaide. The Range, however, covers a massive area, an...

@MarkHenderson Your sign doesn't say that entering may cause bullet holes

3:06 AM
This was later scaled back to a total area of 127,000 square kilometres (49,000 sq mi); still the largest land-based weapons test range in the world.
@Jacob Can't. There are public roads and even private properties in the range

@MarkHenderson You're doing it wrong :)
It needs to be away from everything else

@Jacob The private properties were all given bomb shelters, and are given advanced warning of tests. There's only about 150 people who live in it
It's pretty difficult to find an area where there is absolutely nothing and still get people to work there

@MarkHenderson what about the secret stuff
@MarkHenderson Area 51. They fly people in from Las Vegas.

@Jacob They collect the debris from everything that is detonated, and if any of it lands on your property you leave it untouched and call the defence force, they come and pick it up
I watched a 45-minute show about it once
So I declare myself a first-hand expert on it
@Jacob I',m sure they have their reasons about why they built it where they did. It was founded in 1946, so it's been around for a very long time

@MarkHenderson I'm sold,
WHO'S LINE IS IT ANYWAY IS COMING BACK!!

3:20 AM
there you go @Jacob

Failing like la'forge in a Jefferies tube.
@JourneymanGeek Thanks

@JourneymanGeek Picture is worth a thousand words

What have I missed?

3:51 AM
Morning

@MarkHenderson I get a kick out of how many people get suprised by those
we have em almost everywhere

@JourneymanGeek We typically don't shoot people for trespass. We just shoot them for being of middle eastern appearance, or for not understanding english instructions, or for having mental illness.

4:35 AM
vCloud Director is shitting on me...

4:46 AM
@ewwhite Some people would be into that

The apache documentation states that for the prefork module "concurrent requests suffer, since they're made to wait in line until a server process is free". In other words, prefork spawns a new process for each incoming request. But why does the process need to wait until another process is finished? Why don't each process just use a different core on the cpu?

@MarkHenderson: funny thing is, we usually don't either

Or is each child process considered a foreground process and must wait until the other process is finished. If that's true, then why doesn't apache spawn the child processes as background processes, especially since they only have one thread of execution

@JohnMerlino I have this feeling that the answer will be somehow related to boobs
But alas I am unsure about both of these things

5:25 AM
@MarkHenderson Speaking of, those two Australian girls above were pretty okay.

@WesleyDavid Except for the racist slogans on their stomach :p

@MarkHenderson Oh... I'll rub that riiiiight offfff.... ;-)
Seriously though, your country is roughly the size of Mars, with a similar climate and amount of arable land, and there's - what? - Four hundred people there? Five hundred tops? You're hardly full up.

@WesleyDavid Exactly

6:13 AM
Mmmm... chocolate milk...

@WesleyDavid: just curious, what's your monitor size?

G'day

@JourneymanGeek 11" Air, so 1366 x 768

6:28 AM
ahh, same as my thinkpad.
curious
OS X?

6:43 AM
morning

@JourneymanGeek Yarp, 10.8.whatever

ahh
ok
people keep saying yarp ;p

@JourneymanGeek Good catches once again. I think I'm going to see if I can isolate that weird little doubled sign-up notch on the home page and display:none it out.
Gah, and Uptown's form is sending email to the wrong place. Okay, good to iron these things out.

@WesleyDavid: also, I think you need to test with a non webkit form ;p

@WesleyDavid what where ?

6:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek Uh oh - does it not work well?

@WesleyDavid just add whey for a great recovery drink

@Iain A little project I'm working on and about to release. =)
@Iain Num.

clicky linky ?

er non webkit browser
@WesleyDavid: a lot of the quirks I am finding are browser dependant

@Iain Get ready for it - I'll nuke it in a few seconds:

6:59 AM
@WesleyDavid skype

@Iain Too late! And I forgot about that. Derp.

(one of the few nice things about windows ;p)

@JourneymanGeek So the contact form looks bad or behaves oddly for you?

@WesleyDavid: the contact form is fine
all the quirks I found are not quirky on chrome ;p
sorry, got distracted >_>

@JourneymanGeek It's Jetpack's default form. Not crazy about it. I've got a license for Gravity Forms that I haven't used, and didn't want to blow it on Ghetto, but might use it on Uptown.

7:01 AM
@WesleyDavid: scratch that

See, I want a conversion page, and Gravity Forms does that nicely.
@JourneymanGeek Dun dun dunnn

the wierdness with the layouts NOT on the form are fine on chrome
like the sign up botton looking odd

@JourneymanGeek Okay, yeah. Those contemptible signup buttons.

otherwise I can't find anything majorly wrong ;p
I'll give it a third run later. I'm sure I'll find something

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, it's midnight. I've got to get to bed. I'll correct things from your second email first thing.

7:08 AM

ah okay

8:12 AM
for those of you following the saga of my brother, I just found out he's had 4 more charges added this week, for child porn on one of the computers they examined. And he's confessed to them too.

Wait, we're not tech support for the internet?
2

@MichaelHampton I know, news to me too.
@RobM Christ.

i know right

@RobM I hope they'll lock him up for a good long time

@DennisKaarsemaker so do I. I think I've said before he clearly needs help and treatment and more importantly, people need to be kept safe from him.

8:25 AM
How's the niece doing?

@RobM bloody hell, this is the first I've seen of this, how's it affecting you?

@RobM Colour me unsurprised
@RobM and hugs to you and your family

@Chopper3 It's not been fun, I can tell you. I've got a lot of help and support, as has my sis-in-law and the family but the stress has made me ill, wrecked hell with my stomach
cheers @JennyD
@DennisKaarsemaker she's doing well thanks. She's quite a strong one I think. She's passed the first year of her college exams this year and she's pleased with that. She's got a lot to go through until she's better but already not having to be scared of her dad when she's at home has lifted a weight from her
I'm quite proud of the college result - she's not an academic person at the best of times. I'm also quite proud that her uncle was the second person she told after her mum...

@RobM sorry to hear that, I had a member of staff, my right-hand guy really, who about a decade ago left his laptop downloading about 2.5k photos off a porn site, normal stuff really - he was woken up by the cops as there were 6 'kiddie pics' in amongst those 2.5k, got 3 months for that - lost just about everything

nasty @Chopper3, very nasty
but this is quite a bit worse than that. My brother was molesting his daughter and had been for years until she finally got the courage up to tell us about him.

8:32 AM
@Chopper3 there really is a difference between wanting "regular porn" and getting kiddie pics unbeknownst, and going searching for it

And the porn was very intentional - when he confessed to me that what my niece was saying was true, he also said he'd been looking for kiddie pictures.

@RobM can't imagine, seriously - Christmas dinner at your parent's house will be awkward this year right?

At $JOB[-2] there was a guy got caught with kiddie porn on his computer... He really appeared to not at all understand how that was worse than regular porn. I was very happy he was in the other union so I didn't have to be his rep at the dismissal hearing. (Yes, he got reported to and I think he got jail time.)

@Chopper3 that's actually the good news. Both my parents are dead mate...
;-)

@RobM Was it saved on one of the machines that the kids used?

8:34 AM
@JennyD not in british law, he could prove he'd never even opened the files but they treated him like he'd taken the photos

yeah on a family machine

@RobM ah, yes, I can see how that's at least some comfort

@Chopper3 I know, it's the same here and I actually think that is wrong. Especially as the law here includes drawings.

It is. I'd hate to have to break this news to them
It's been hard enough talking to the larger family about it

@RobM That was actually the main reason my sister and I never told anybody. We figured it would make everyone else so unhappy plus cause all kinds of practical problems. Kids are sometimes taking on way too much responsibility...

8:38 AM
I have a female friend in New Zealand who looks EXACTLY like 'Edna Mode', the inventor woman from "The Incredibles" - don't ever google image search for 'edna mode porn' * shivers *

@JennyD I know what you're saying. I know, my niece told me, that she's intentionally not described the precise details of everything with her mum, or with me or other family members, because she doesn't want to upset us.
Bless her, all she's been through and she's thinking of others. Same as you and your sister...

@RobM how old is she now?

She's 17. This has been going on for about 12 years though

@RobM As long as she has someone to talk to when she needs it, that doesn't have to be you. In fact it may be easier to talk to someone that she doesn't have to meet everyday and see them thinking about what happened.

@RobM fuck, same as as my lad, horrid - at least it's one less birthday/christmas present to have to buy

8:42 AM
@Chopper3 always look at the bright side :-)
@Chopper3 and speaking of the bright side, congrats on your test results - I saw it starred but didn't see you on that day

@JennyD I'd agree, and yes she's getting counselling. And yes, as much as I'd be willing to let her talk to me about anything she wanted, I made the point myself to her that it might be easier to talk to someone outside the family... as much as I'm willing to talk to her about anything, that isn't the same as wanting to know it
@Chopper3 yep, one less present, it's not all bad!

@JennyD I've not seen or spoken to my parents for 13 years, 'cos my mum's a cunt, and I have to say it's nice not having to struggle to find something for her to hate twice a year
@JennyD thank you, still have to take a lot of tablets/have tests etc. but it's good news for now

@RobM It's really hard to talk to someone you love and knowing that what you say will also cause them pain. It's hard not to feel guilty even though it isn't your own fault.

@Chopper3 very good news. As that fucking disease is the reason both my parents aren't around for Christmas dinner, I was especially pleased to see a friend beat it.

@RobM do her friends know too, is it public knowledge?

8:44 AM
Exactly @JennyD

@RobM thanks

@Chopper3 her close ones do, I think. It's not public knowledge though... all that most people know where they live is that my brother and his wife have seperated and no one knows where he's gone. The papers can't name them or anything

@RobM 'k, friends are so important at that age, more than family in a way

On that note, sorry to cut and run but I need to get my car over to my mate's garage so it can have its yearly service and MOT. What fun.
@Chopper3 you're right there.

@RobM enjoy :-)

Q: Sudden and permanent increase in CPU input voltage, core temperature and fan speed without corresponding increase in load

AlexDOne of my servers shows strange change in its monitored parameters. Last Sunday evening one of voltage measures ( in0 which I think is Vcore) suddenly increased by 20% from ~1V to ~1.20V on average. There is corresponding significant increase in reported CPU core temperatures and CPU fan speed bu...

Is this really a thing?

@TomO'Connor His CPU usage increased slightly. Big hairy deal.
The shocker there is that he put so much effort into monitoring such a complete piece of shit motherboard.

@MichaelHampton my.thoughts.exactly.

@MichaelHampton I was gonna say I didn't know Gigabyte made server motherboards. Then I looked it up and it's not a server motherboard.

Shoot the bastard. I'm going to bed.
2

9:03 AM
@tombull89 ha!

@MichaelHampton Sleep well.

Two to the chest, one to the head.

I had just gotten my hours back to normal, going to sleep before midnight and waking reasonably early. Then I was stupid enough to start reading River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay last night and stayed up until 2 am to finish it...

9:18 AM
@Chopper3 +1 recent comment on meta - it's kinda getting silly there now though. For all the highfalutin talk of communities, clicks win over crap every time

@Iain annoying me too - trying to not get too riled up about it really
@Iain I imagine we both have a fairly similar view on the site right now - tbh I only come here for you guys and to keep an eye on trends

In truth I'm just sad/ammused now

@MichaelHampton my guess is ricer ;p

@Chopper3 I guess we're close, I have a specific rep target and when I reach it I will only play enough to maintain it

@Iain I have literally no idea of my rep at all - let's see...
@Iain genuinely the first time I've looks for months I reckon

9:22 AM
@Iain I still enjoy it when someone asks a real question and I can figure it out for them. But there are fewer and fewer such questions.

@JennyD indeed

@MichaelHampton Mozambique Drill.
Ooh. My golf balls might arrive today.
Ordered 100x lake-recovered balls for practice.

@TomO'Connor Where do you play ?

@Iain I don't, at the moment, but there's a very nice large abandoned quarry opposite my parents house
which is excellent fun with a 1 wood.

@TomO'Connor pings all over the place if you hit the wall ? I know people who play at the Worcestershire club

9:31 AM
@Iain Yeah, basically, but has a nasty habit of getting lost for good.
about a 75% attrition rate.
I need to head out to the rushwick driving range, really.

ouch :)

9:46 AM
@JennyD It would help if there were a way to filter questions better than ignore:tag - I have a set of rules in my head that would help make SF a little more relevant for me

1 hour later…
10:53 AM
I honestly think the powers that be at SE wouldn't be that sad to see a large part of us SF regs leave. Despite all the high talk about the site being by professionals for professionals, its actually clear that they want it to be tech support for devops wannabes who can't even fucking google properly.
6

@RobM yeah, if even pointing out that the site has a target audience is considered offensive... there's no support to be gained there.

Indeed

@RobM I'm really tempted to go postal and just delete all the shit from the site, see how long it is before I get stripped of my diamond.
2

@TomO'Connor It would probably be a while before anyone noticed.

11:00 AM
@TomO'Connor I sympathise but that's just playing to the hands of people who already think we're too big a bunch of primadonnas as it is.

@RobM I wonder if i can delete their user accounts.

@TomO'Connor You'd have to go further than I did, I was pretty ruthless, any hint of spam and everthing got wiped for good, closed down shit immediately - nobody ever commented

I destroyed the soho tag yesterday, retagged a dozen questions, deleted about 6.

There's nothing wrong in deleting stuff that ought to be deleted, of course, so there's little in the way of valid complaints to be had about it
@Chopper3 to change the subject slightly, I meant to ask earlier if I didn't have to get my car dropped off... what uni did your son pick in the end, I remember he had a few very nice ones to consider
