yes, even a minimalist apache configuration is slower than ngix when serving static data
apache can't MPM PHP, so the popular choice is to use FastCGI+PHP-FPM.. it works quite nice with nginx, but sure - it could be done with any kind of webserver
@TomO'Connor dude, could you delete the entire comment trail for this (serverfault.com/a/514101/1435) and maybe lock it, the guy's annoying being...well, have a read
@TomO'Connor thanks, glad you saw what I meant - just didn't want to get drawn in any more - of course he'll take it to meta now, you bet :( - cheers though. Oh and I got my new BF3 rig working on Friday - fricking awesome - we'll have to play together again?
@tombull89 I'm the other way, constantly toying with my loadout and appearance - still get killed by faster kiddies but I use my brain more so find it balances out ok
@tombull89 I think we can look at each other's stats - I got a ~440 metre headshot the other week
@tombull89 just spotted battlelog's still a bit fucked up, not showing results from some games yesterday - I've hit a bit of a wall with the assignments, really only got the very tough ones left {the rambo one needs multikills, any idea how fucking hard ONE is??) - so I'm trying to max out all the guns
@tombull89 which is a pain as there's a reason I don't play with some of them, some are shit, but my sense of OCD completeness means I have to run around on Ziba with a frickin' shit sniper rifle just to get a set number of kills so I get the silencer or whatever - sometimes being a massive geek isn't it's own reward
@JourneymanGeek I've got one of those light-up, programable corsair (k95) keyboards coming later today, not sure what I'm going to program it to do but there we go
@Chopper3 Meh.... Thinking of building a syslog server. Not sure if that's what I need though...for Windows boxes. I need something that can pull all the logs together from all of my systems and report in one interface
Ok, so my Ubuntu 12.10 install seems to have gone slightly sideways. It currently boots from a Compactflash card that I was planning on replacing soon, but as luck would have it it's gone down now. The boot process gets to a certain point and then just sits there, and if I boot up a distro off a ...
Good morning everyone! At least it's morning here in Charleston, SC when I write this. I'm on a vacation with my family, but I had to take a break to share the good news. Election results were posted to the LOPSA-Discuss mailing list last night, and I was elected to the Board of Directors in [...]
Have one user who's trying to print arch drawings (PDF files) on it. If I choose the right size roll (36 inch), Adobe refuses to print it. Larger roll crashes Adobe, and the smaller roll works (but leaves a lot of wasted whitespace).
@NathanC We have an $18k label printer...that had to be replaced with a the repair man's demo model because we couldn't get it to work... The demo model was already 2 years old
I could have swore I saw in an SF conversation it came out that @tombull89 was a girl?! I was like..."oh, that would explain the pink rabbit"....oh what the hell...guess I'll just start swinging both ways
I'm trying to limit each Squid proxy user to certain IP range, for an example I have 2 users and they are user1 and user2 and full IP address range is 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.10 now I want to grant permission to user1 to access IP range only from 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.3 and for user2 it'll be only ...
I need some bash help again... what I'm trying to do is take the output of two greps, merge them, and sort by unique. This is what it looks like now, and it's not working:
how annoying is it when every single customer doesn't understand site and services and how to setup site links so the kcc can do what it's supposed to do
I'm thinking voodoo right now.
I've been messing with IIS for the past 3 hours to understand why a website can't be updated. Not only I can't update the website, but if I stop the application in IIS altogether, the website is still accessible from the server itself and from any other PC.
The we...
@MDMarra - my old boss would say something like that...AFTER he heard it from another tech...he'd try to sound like he knew what we did. If I made a comment in retort he'd always stumble at that point.
@Travis - 56% humidity is pretty high for that temp...35-45 is about right. But if you got the temp down to 68 then 45RH wouldn't feel so "humid". But you definitely don't want it dry...
@TheCleaner haha. My boss said it after reviewing a bunch of health check documents I've written in the last week. I was hired to replace him in a technical role when he went to management three months ago, so he actually knows what he's talking about
I think I probably know more AD than him, but he can school me in system center
@TheCleaner all good so far. He basically writes statements of work, send them to me for review, I suggest changes, he asks how many weeks, then he sends it to the customers. He's been pretty hands off
He's getting me a junior engineer soon, so that's awesome
Maybe it's just setup wrong. Are the servers in a rack discharging warm air towards the returns with the cool vents place in front of the racks? And is the thermostat/reading taking place near the returns or near the vents?
So i'm trying to explain to a friend (who lives in the middle of nowhere practically) that cable/dsl is probably not possible ...explaining why is the fun part.
I’m looking to setup a permanent VPN connection from our office to a Windows Server provided by 1and1.
We’re looking to get SQL log shipping setup between the hosted 1and1 server and our office. I’m familiar with setting up a VPN point on our office router (Draytek 2820) so that users can VPN i...
@NathanC There is. That is the phone that we are required to have for one of the sales reps in Florida. To "forward" to his cell phone we had put a physical phone in that forwards to his cell....
@ScottPack lol. Actually we lock the door up at night BUT I'm the first one in the office to leave. That leaves the freight analyist here by themself with the equipment
@JourneymanGeek Did I mention they had a WEP key of 0123456789 on the wireless access point that was actually 2 feet away from an exterior wall that bordered the parking lot? I hacked it from outside with my iPad just to show them I could (they didn't believe me). '
@JourneymanGeek Can't change the duct work. I already tried to get them to do it and the A/C company says they cant. I tried to get them to put the intake vent at the back of the servers and cold air in front of the racks and they couldn't do it
@JourneymanGeek This is just an office converted to be a "server" room. My boss, the CFO has the other rack in his office. He has an old Power Edge server that is just piercingly loud in there. I haven't moved it yet into my office.
Did I mention he had them put a 2.5 ton A/C unit into his office? It is 8x8
@MDMarra Did I mention that we just got ear plugs for the machine press operators? You can't talk anywhere near them...but they just got ear plugs for them
@ScottPack Oh, I do have a magnetic lock with keypad access device to install on the door. The main reason I haven't is because I have to give the key code out to my office mates and janitorial staff and once they have it, everyone will have it regardless
probably. I still feel 20 something. Still play Black Ops on the weekends with buddies at times. Can't wait for my kids to get old enough to play video games so I won't feel bad about buying them. :)
@JourneymanGeek welcome to probably 80% of server rooms...(number is probably higher)
@JourneymanGeek Yep... They hired a contractor to put the phone system in. They bought a non-standard rack and the only thing that would fit is the phone system. I had to buy another rack for new servers and it's a good 12" longer than the phone system rakc
How can I create virtual network interface like virbr0-nic? I am trying to find a way to create NIC like virbr0-nic but everything which I can find in internet is how to create interface attached to the physical interface like eth0:0.

I hear VMware's new cloud platform is going to run on Supermicro (minus the storage.) I hope they have some sort of giant jukebox that replaces failed blade servers
@RyanRies Supermicro alone isn't bad... it just requires due-diligence to find stable combinations. I'm sure VMware tweaked the shit out of their config and developed a good reference platform.
@MDMarra Had a tech back in the late 90s that used our Ghost base image like it was Robitussin. "App is locking up? Ghost it!" "Email isn't working? Ghost it!" "Embezzled money? Ghost it!" I swear the guy would set someone back to baseline almost daily.
@JoelESalas Because MSSQL2012 is licensed per core. AMD procs generally have more cores, which means much higher licensing cost. In addition, each of those cores performs significantly worse than Intel cores, especially in OLTP workloads
@ewwhite I have to admit, I'm still a bit torn between "You're doing it wrong, you can make XYZ changes and use 8GB instead" and "Sure, the changes will be reflected in next month's bill"
