What's puzzling is that the VPN is still showing as live...

ohhh my Satan this question

Q: Passive ethernet tap

bgsI'm having an hard time figuring out why can't I capture the packets flowing between two devices, in both directions, using a self made Ethernet tap, with copper cable, which looks just like this one: Both end devices (say, A and B) are connected to a switch. But since the sniffer (a regular l...

I don't know what to do with it, but I want to hurt the author in ways that probably violate all of the Geneva conventions simultaneously.

@ChrisS I mean, that type of request deserves some attention, right?

@ewwhite Depends on how much I hate the client

@ewwhite Indeed it does. @ChrisS must decide exactly how much to overcharge the idiot client
@ewwhite rape 'em.
The insurance industry (even "healthcare exchanges") exist to siphon money out of the populace
the least they can do is provide you with a comfortable living.

Hehe.

4:14 PM
If they ever get around to complaining about the cost offer "consulting services" at twice your normal rate to improve the system.
@ewwhite that's all?
this state clearly doesn't know how to waste their taxpayers' money!

I don't like the Castro part, but otherwise, this would make a good/scary movie: schneier.com/blog/archives/2013/04/…

Man, even with the firewall dropping based on RBLs AND our mail server dropping with RBLs and spamassassin we still get spam that comes through :(

@NathanC I get at least 50/day on my personal account

without RBLs and SA it's well over 100

4:18 PM
This movie plot won the contest: schneier.com/blog/archives/2013/04/…

I'm also using the "greeting delay" feature and yet we still get some
It basically delays the SMTP greeting for x seconds ...most spam scripts won't wait that long.

@voretaq7 I kept looking at the guy's drawing and then back at the pic and then back to the drawing over and over. Now my head hurts.

I only use Spamhaus's RBL, still get a dozen spam through, but almost all are sorted into "Junk" by SA.

@ChrisS I just have SA shit anything that scores 5+ into space
If your email looks that spammy I don't fucking want it.

heh, i have it set to tag at 3.5 and outright reject at 5

4:29 PM
VMware people... who can tell me what's wrong with this picture?
oops..

mew

Don't be like @JoelESalas and get all hard for KVM!

@ewwhite Grizzly, you corporate droid! =P

@WesleyDavid can YOU answer the question?

@ewwhite No. =( It just looks really, really expensive.
Can I discuss VMware's licensing pitfalls with you?

4:35 PM
@WesleyDavid tremendously.
@WesleyDavid sure.

@ewwhite Okay, first, VMware makes a fist and orders you to turn around...

@WesleyDavid you play by the rules too much!

Second, you can't use VMware in any way if there is going to be an external customer accessing the system, unless you're in the VSPP. Fie on thee, fake-FOSS licensing, fie on thee.

@WesleyDavid look, would you prefer that it be Oracle?
they don't even have the courtesy to make a fist.

@voretaq7 You know, I was just going to mention Oracle being not far off from this equation...

4:38 PM
or remove that spiky bracelet :(

@ewwhite would you like for the history to be purged too?

@jokerdino naw
:)

@jokerdino Ed likes to live dangerously.

ok purged. you are welcome

You should see when he posts photos of his Brazzers college days.

4:39 PM
Woah.
I didn't buy a premium account yet.

@WesleyDavid Am I just being lazy, or is it a hell of a lot easier to require OpenID accounts instead of having people create yet another new damn account.

@Adrian Yeah it's a lot easier. I'm more and more using Google or Twitter to create accounts on places. Witness: Code School yesterday. I used my Google OpenID.
Everyone is lazy. Lower the barrier to entry by using it.
@Adrian You could do what most places seem to be doing now, like Fitocracy, and that's use all the big fancy social networks as login providers, but then way down in the corner have a teeny little link to allow people to make an independent account.
But that could be a later feature. Just allow Google logins until people squawk.
Pain is a great feature indicator.
2

@WesleyDavid This is true. And frankly, and it has low ROI too.

@Adrian As Method Man said (almost 20 years ago!!) "Bring the pain!"
Wow, 20 years.

@WesleyDavid Yeah, Lady and I have been remarking lately that the early 90s does NOT feel like 20 years ago.

4:47 PM
@Adrian I've got socks that are older than some of the PHP developers I deal with.
3

@Adrian we're old :(

@voretaq7 Patron saints of SysAdmins:

@voretaq7 Tell me about it. And I'm not too far away from needing to figure out what I want to do next. By the time you're 40, quite a few places simply won't hire out in IT.

@Adrian By then you'll have a network of self sustaining Rubythings and the whippersnappers will be yelping to work for you.

@WesleyDavid One hopes.

5:00 PM
@ewwhite Nope
Any problems with it today that you know about?

@MDMarra Naw.

ok
I see exactly when the problem started, 2/2012
But the only log that goes back that far and has those events in it isn't useful for root cause analysis
So, I just kinda rubbed my hands together and did some Mr Miyagi AD magic to it.

@MDMarra 2/2012

yeah, feb of last year
Maybe that's not when DHCP started bombing, but that's just a symptom of a larger problem that's been going on since then

@MDMarra I was under the impression that in those large AD environments that you guys would mostly put a cap in problem machines, spool up a new one from SCCM, and that you mostly worried about wider network-wide issues.

5:08 PM
@Adrian Easier that way

@Travis And I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I haven't had more things to do than time to do it in where sitting down to really figure out why something is broken was a luxury I could afford.

@Adrian Workstation wise was a definite. Servers I always tend to be a little more curious as to why
For some reason I don't think this is correct... *09:30:24.117 UTC Mon Aug 30 1993

@Travis True. And these are probably some of the differences between a good IT shop and a crap one.

Yep
@Adrian Although sometimes it is a benefit to determine why a workstation crapped out in the case of windows updates or something of the like, but fine line I'd say

@Travis Makes sense. Starting to look like I'm going to have to learn some of that fancy-pants Windows stuff you guys do. Not too many slots for pure-Linux people that have limited Dev experience these days.

5:16 PM
@Adrian This is in one of Ed's produce companies
On one of the two DCs that has third party software installed on it
And some of the issues that I found weren't machine specific. If the problem still keeps popping up, my next recommendation is to demote, migrate shit to a member server that isn't necessary, spin up a new template, and make it a replacement DC
They can't afford cool still like SCCM and even if they could, they wouldn't know what the hell to do with it

@MDMarra Yeah, the security system software.

Looked like time clock stuff too

@MDMarra sorry, accounting

@ewwhite When did you start working for my company :)

apology accepted

5:22 PM
@voretaq7 burn it - it's TL - a shitty question that just adds to the river of crap that is the front page of SF

@MDMarra yeah, so what?!?

Do you guys use your own internal NTP or external?

@Travis I see a lot of "sync core switches to external, sync PDC emulator from network core. All network devices sync from core, all computers sync from the domain hierarchy"

@Travis GPS and PTP... in my past...
now, we sync server time manually using a Casio Calculator watch.

Q: What to do in Las Vegas without having to sin?

Saif60For religious reasons, I don't gamble drink alcohol engage in fornication visit prostitution or strip clubs Are there still interesting things for people like me in Vegas? It is a week-long business trip, with a weekend stay.

5:33 PM
I'm contemplating synching everything to ntp.pool.org

Dan
Man, I'm so glad I don't have any pesky religion getting in my way

lol
@Dan Only leaves you with prostitution to fill your void huh?

Woot!

Dan
@Travis I don't have a void to be filled; what with gambling, drinking and fornication etc

@Travis pool.ntp.org and yeah

5:34 PM
@MDMarra Casio.

I have a void to fill with fornication ba dum schhh

@MDMarra This one is ntp.pool.org. For some reason when I visit with a web browser it gives me a malware error. I just click "Accept" and "Scan for viruses" when it prompts me
@RyanRies So you put it in your butt...and by butt I mean not your cloud

0.us.pool.ntp.org 1.us.pool.ntp.org 2.us.pool.ntp.org etc... try to at least use NTP servers on your own continent

@Iain I don't think it's TL, I just think it's stupd

suuup ya'll

5:38 PM
@Dan I've got some things that guy could do without upsetting his religion - how about some hate-crimes agains say gays/lesbians/transgenders, or some casual racism and misogyny? he could try sticking his nose into education, he could do some science ignoring - how about a bit of recreational damning of non-believers - that lot should keep him busy
3

Dan
@Chopper3 ;)

@Chopper3 Heathen!!!

@Chopper3 How do you know what his religion is (he doesn't specify)?

@voretaq7 it's TL exactly because it's stupid. It's not a sysadmin project - if anything it's an electronics project at best but it's still shit

@Chopper3 Don't forget overtly judging people, as loud as possible, while covertly molesting little boys or other such crap

5:40 PM
@Iain that would be OT (which is what I'm going to close it as if it doesn't get 2 more close votes while I'm eating lunch)

@RyanRies I do. i didn't feel like typing all of them out

@voretaq7 TL because only someone who is dumber than an dumb thing would even conceive such a stupid idea.

Dan
@voretaq7 Does it really matter? Few of them are exactly forward thinking in regards to @Chopper3's points?

There any windows 7 password "blankers" like there was for XP?

Doing Evil Things with NFS:

Q: LSF, NFS, and make

nachumWhen using make in an environment with LSF and NFS, there are issues with synchronization. For example, if a make recipe results in an LSF command being dispatched, and the target of that command is a prerequisite to another recipe, then the LSF command may return before the target is updated on ...

5:44 PM
LSF?

@Dan most of them don't advocate hate crimes, casual racism, or misogyny - with the exception of the batshit-brand crazy extremist branches.
and if we're judging everything by batshit-brand extremes we may as well just blow up the planet now

@voretaq7 true but the majority of them are along these lines

Dan
@voretaq7 Most don't advocate crime, but even the moderates of most relgiions are misogynistic and anti minority
Even our touchy feely Church of England officially hates gays and women

@Dan where do you figure that encompasses "most" religions?
(bearing in mind that by practicing population, Christianity (all of its various sects) is actually a minority church)

Dan
@voretaq7 I don't understand the question
@voretaq7 Uh, in what world?

5:47 PM
@Dan there are a fuckload of religions out there

Dan
@voretaq7 Yeah, but the majority have defined branches with relatively clear beliefs regarding, for example, women

@Dan ours. It's currently the largest plurality but it's substantially less than 50% of the followers of "major religions"
(and that "christianity" figure itself is a mess because even we can't agree on what we are)

Dan
@voretaq7 That doesn't really make it a "minority" religion

@voretaq7 1/3 of the earths population claims Christianity... in some form

@MattBear and 2/3 of the population claim (!Christianity) in some form

Dan
5:51 PM
@voretaq7 Yes, but it's not 2/3's with another religion. By your logic, every religion is a minority

2-2.2 billion christians, 1.5-1.7 billion islams 800 mill - 1 bill hindu

@Dan By MY logic you can't define religion in terms of "majority" and "minority" - beliefs are entirely individual, but I'm not using my logic - I'm using cold, unfeeling mathematics (which say there is no "majority" (>50%) religion on earth at this moment - just plurality.

@voretaq7 Christianity and Islam are hard to tell apart (It's all Abrahamic, they just disagree about which prophet moved them away from Judaism), and together they're over 50% of the world population.

@freiheit Christianity and Judaism are hard to tell apart - they just disagree on whether or not the messiah already showed up or we should still be waiting
(and whether or not you're allowed to eat that tasty, tasty bacon)

Dan
@voretaq7 Okay, le'ts try this another way. I said the majority of regions fall (Closely) into Chopper's points. If we simply pick Christians and Muslims then that's "the majorty" and they definitely aren't gay and female friendly

5:55 PM
@Travis yeah dude that's not right

really when i comes down to it, Islamic's, Christian's, and Jew's all believe in the same god, just different semantics. So around 4 billion people all believe in the same god... sorta
and just kill each other over the details...

@MattBear At every level, a la Northern Ireland.

@MDMarra I'm just dyslexic apparently

@MattBear don't say that in the middle east, they'll all agree to hold their petty squabbles to lynch you as an infidel.

Abrahamic religions (also Abrahamism) are the monotheistic faiths emphasizing and tracing their common origin to Abraham or recognizing a spiritual tradition identified with him. They are one of the major divisions in comparative religion, along with Indian religions (Dharmic), East Asian religions (Taoic) and Neopaganism. , it was estimated that 54% of the world's population (3.8 billion people) considered themselves adherents of the Abrahamic religions, about 30% of other religions, and 16% of no religion. The Abrahamic religions originated in Western Asia. The Abrahamic religions in...

5:56 PM
@Travis Just? I'm sure you got more than that going on. =)

@freiheit hey! I diddnt even read that lol, I was pretty damn close

Dan
@Adrian Like most of these, NI has little to do with religions beliefs at all

@Adrian Yep! @MDMarra's mom apparently also

@Dan I'm not sure I really agree with that either - I've never been chased out of a church or a mosque because I like dudes. I am aware that there are certain churches and mosques that would not welcome me because of it though.

5:57 PM
@MDMarra Yep, I'm good. I just didn't type it in here right. It's correct on the servers

@Dan Meh. Religion's always been a convenient justification for a thirst for power.

Dan
@voretaq7 Neither allow females into their upper echelons - how is that not misogynistic?

@voretaq7 It's ok for girls to like dudes though. Why would they kick you out?

Dan
@voretaq7 And neither would allow an openly gay leader, so how is that not homophobic?

@Dan Neither do the boy scouts - are they misogynistic?

Dan
5:59 PM
@voretaq7 Well, I'd say yes, actually. Our scouts let girls in years ago

@voretaq7 I might chase you out of my church :D

Dan
Though that's just good old fashioned sexism

@Dan that theory has yet to be tested - although officially us roman catholics are perfectly happy to have a gay pope as long as he's not having sex with anyone.

Dan
@voretaq7 Can it be a girl?

Church of drinking beer, looking at nekkid ladies, and playing video games

5:59 PM
@voretaq7 Strictly speaking, shouldn't the pope not be having sex with anyone no matter what the dangly bits are?
