@MDMarra - I simply can't take you seriously as management in the hoodie...

@tombull89 @MichaelHampton after he finally snaps.

A: 2013 Moderator Election Results

Michael HamptonThank you all for your support and encouragement. I separately received an email from Stack Exchange telling me I won the election, and in part it says: "Take it easy—there's no rush, and you don’t need to jump in and wreak havoc on your first day." So I'm looking forward to wreaking havoc tomor...

lolz it kinda works.

@tombull89 tombollock.net?

@JoelESalas oh look, we've a comedian.

9:04 PM
@TheCleaner I'm not a room owner
Oh wait

@MDMarra you are

Cool

@MDMarra now be useful and change the topic or something :P

"With great power comes great res-lol chatbans for everyone"

9:05 PM
not for meeeeeee
(it's possible to chatban a mod, it's just a pain in the ass to do it)
I CAN POST YELLING_BIRD WITH TOTAL IMPUNITY!

We can do that here anyway...

@tombull89 I got banned for it once :(
sniffle

@voretaq7 yes, in The Bridge. Where even Zalgo text will get flagged.

@tombull89 no, in here, because a certain person who shall remain nameless in italics flagged it as offensive :P

@voretaq7 name them in bold then

9:10 PM
@Iain It's all because of the . . . unfortunate name of yelling_bird's home town

ಠ_ಠ

@voretaq7 Yelling Bird ban? Heh. I think it was even Zypher that kicked me to the curb.

I thought Yelling Bird used to be in the room feed?

@Adrian . . . I'd kick you from chat but it's just not the same as kicking @wesleydavid

@Tanner don't thonk so

9:12 PM
(where is that mangy cat anyway?!)
@Tanner nooooooooo no no no no no

@voretaq7 Meh. Go ahead and kick me. Y'all aren't that entertaining today anyway.

@Tanner Haha, if he was it wasn't for very long

have you ever looked at that account?
I only post the TAME shit in here

@voretaq7 Have you looked at this room? :P

@Tanner yelling bird is not safe for the comms room

9:13 PM
I dared someone (think it was Adrian) to post a Yelling Bird tweet in The Bridge before. That...didn't go down too well.

@tombull89 You did? I thought that was voretaq that dared me to do that.

@Adrian nah that was me

@tombull89 That little stunt did get me permanently on Rebecca's shit list though.

@Adrian she's gone so you're ok

@tombull89 The Bridge never goes down too well. I wish for once it'd go down proper and take the whole crew with it.

9:15 PM
@Adrian I probably didn't discourage it as much as I should have.

Mar 1 '12 at 18:58, by tombull89
A bounty of OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAND rep to whoever goes to The Bridge and posts a Yelling Bird tweet. If they like flagging, give them something worth flagging.

@JeffFerland they've been behaving themselves very well lately

@Iain yeah. I just heard about that. I spent 4-5 months this winter under a very large Mouse-shaped rock though.

I'm not sure if that's because the gaming mods hang out there as much as we do in here now, or if gnomeslice left, or what...

A ripstik was just delivered to my desk. I'm going to kill myself.

9:16 PM
@JeffFerland Remember to video it for our amusement.

@JeffFerland a what?

I did notice The Chernoff had gone. I thought that was because we were mostly behaving ourselves.

@David think skateboard, but with two wheels on casters and a torsion spring

Part of the move fast and break interns program at Facebook

9:18 PM
@JeffFerland I don't need a ripstik for that

@tombull89 Yeah, I'm pretty sure she considered this room and its cohort the source of all evil on the SE network.

@Adrian So she didn't like us??

@JoelESalas SE don't like us full stop.

@Adrian nah, we were just occasionally over the top

@voretaq7 I'm pretty sure it was more or less continuously over the top, actually.

9:19 PM
I can cut down on the casual swears. EVERYONE DO THEIR FUCKING PART ASSHOLES
3

aww no m0ar stars for me today :(
2

@tombull89 they don't like us when we're out of control. We're much less out of control in here than we were a year ago
@tombull89 consolation star.

@voretaq7 Chat might be, but I meant in regards to the attitude on the main site.

@tombull89 we're not the only site developing such an attitude toward awful questions

@voretaq7 we're not?

9:21 PM
I think SuperUser is developing a little bit more edginess towards bad questions than previously

and frankly as long as everyone maintains a tone of professionalism on the main site (i.e. no you may not call them grotty little wankers in so many words)...
@allquixotic Stack Overflow is starting to make us look like the nice site

@voretaq7 ooh. examples?

@voretaq7 SU has pretty much always been the nicest site, but SO is such a huge melting pot that you're going to have extremely nice people and extremely rude people frequenting the same site, often who've never met eachother and thus haven't cross-pollinated their culture.

@Adrian look at recently closed questions on SO and you'll find some

I truly think the fragmentation is hitting critical mass. most of the searches I do for questions on the newer sites don't have any answers.

9:22 PM
whereas with SU and SF, the sites are small enough that all the regulars know one another (most of the time), and the culture a.k.a. groupthink sets in, so everyone is pretty much evenly nice or rude ;p

user image
2
oh that was a SU one

@allquixotic on SO they cluster around languages

@allquixotic I really object to the classification of Server Fault as "rude"
It is NOT rude to tell someone "Your question is not appropriate here, we have guidelines, please read them."

@voretaq7 More importantly "You cannot help yourself and we can't help you, so we're not going to talk you into career suicide"

@voretaq7 Too many over-entitled socially-promoted ijits whose academic curriculum primarily consisted of self-esteem enhancement exercises.

9:31 PM
@voretaq7 bad choice of words. I didn't even mean rude. I meant, I don't know, assertive? Although, yes, I could cherry pick comments from veteran users on SF (and every site) that are rude...

@allquixotic rude is largely in the eye of the beholder
you wouldn't believe the stuff that gets flagged as rude/offensive

@Iain aye, and sysadmins (and programmers) are often more gruff than more extroverted professions

@allquixotic We are not paid to suffer fools

sometimes I get called out for being "rude" or "aggressive" when talking to coworkers because they're businessy types and easily get offended by anything that doesn't start with "maybe" or "I think" or "you might want to"

(and around here we're not paid at all)
@allquixotic I don't play that shit. I straight up told my boss if he wanted me to stop saying "no" he should fire me and hire someone right out of college at half my salary

9:36 PM
@voretaq7 I play it. I write up extremely polite, nice emails explaining my case for what I think should happen, and when they get ignored and it comes back later that stuff is messed up or we did something wrong, I forward my email back to them and silently go about my business
can't blame me if I suggested something and your IQ was too low to understand what I meant and take action when it was appropriate

@allquixotic My company is too small for that to be viable
I did that at $job[-1] though, and part of the reason I quit that job was we had a COO who literally told me he didn't want me to correct him or point out problems
when someone tells me they want me to sit quietly and watch shit blow up I consider that a sign that I should leave the company.

@voretaq7 wow. hasn't gotten that bad yet around here

@allquixotic He was a fucking idiot.

I have to point out problems carefully but I still can point them out, and sometimes (sometimes) they get acted on

@allquixotic I send explicitly clear emails

9:38 PM
have to be political about it though :|
and people have a real problem with email around here -- 99% of the time I'm only sending an email so that I have it in the system and can forward it back to them later as evidence to C.M.A., because I know they won't read it and will just come over to my desk and ask me what I was talking about anyway

then when the emails are ignored I and $boss says "I was never told" I privately forward him a copy of the email in a "Perhaps you forgot this discussion we had 2 years ago, for your reference here is the email..." message

doesn't matter whether it's 1 sentence or 2 pages

@allquixotic that's basically what I do
The politic thing to do is say nothing and let $boss think he's right

oh, I don't let that slide. I make sure they know they got it wrong

but again - fuck that. You don't listen to me and then you want to play the "I didn't know!" card? Not Gonna Happen.
I will put up with a lot, but revisionist history? No. I can't get away with it, so I make damn sure nobody else tries it.

9:40 PM
right
it's even harder for me because I have to answer to my immediate bosses and then there's the customer, who interfaces with the bosses but not really (directly) with me; if the customer has a problem that hits the bosses and it's because of me, whoa, look out, job's on the line
in 99% of cases where there's an issue, even if they try to be all revisionist and blame me, as long as it's internal and doesn't come from a customer complaint, I get very little flak, and sometimes it's not even worth telling them they were wrong since the "discipline" is basically non-existent
if it's from the customer though I have to stand my ground and show them that email

@allquixotic My systems are directly used by the customers, so I have to be hard line on doing things right

I have a pretty easy-going team, internally. they can overlook a bit of gruffness. they just really do not want any bad run-ins with the customer, so they're pretty hard on you if you are even perceived as causing a problem for them
it's the difference between their perception and reality that can be challenging to deal with though

@allquixotic I have no dedicated resources, and a business team that thinks they grasp technical reality but are in all honesty clueless.

ugh

But I also have an attitude of "I know how this shit is supposed to be done, I'm not going to cut corners, and I'm not going to do something I know is stupid and jeopardizes the stability of my environment just because a C-level officer is pitching a fit", and I'm willing to walk off the job over it.

9:49 PM
I need a Stack Exchange person... who's online?
@Zypher ?

@voretaq7 as long as you're at a company where that attitude is valued.

(my willingness to compromise would probably go up more if I had a staff and I wasn't the one who would have to take the 0330 phone call.

@ewwhite what's up?

here that would be frowned upon :/

@allquixotic At some point either the CEO will fire me because he doesn't want to hear "no", or he'll treat me like they did at $job[-1] and I'll go from passively keeping my resume out there to actively looking at other companies.

9:50 PM
@Zypher I'm looking for some smart hands services at 111 8th.
Wondering if you guys do ALL THE WORK or if your provider is good with smarthands

@ewwhite It's hard to find a provider that doesn't have at least basically competent smart hands (able to power-cycle the right box)

@ewwhite we do all the work ... but as far as I can tell they would be good enough in a pinch

@voretaq7 This is finance stuff... we're in 111 8th/Telx, but the smart hands people there are rough

what's impossible is to find a provider where all the trained monkeys have ANY unix experience. Remote console is pretty much a must these days

I need rack/stack, cabling, NIC config, some ability to handle serial and initial switch config.
all gear is HP or Dell with ILO/DRAC

9:53 PM
@ewwhite bwahahahahahahaha-ahahaha-ha-ha...oh wait you're serious?

@voretaq7 I heard you wanted to kick me?

@WesleyDavid KITTY!
KICK THE KITTY!
3

@voretaq7 KICK ME!

::chases @WesleyDavid::

KICK ME!
KICK ME!
KICK ME!

9:54 PM
hehehe

@voretaq7 Yeah, there are companies who do this

@WesleyDavid wow... kicking cats is actually fun

-1 for no /kickban

@voretaq7 Yet they're not hiring the available trained monkeys that HAVE Linux experience.

@ewwhite $job[-1] did it

9:55 PM
So I got my second direct contact through careers 2.0 today. Looks like a really nifty company, but the skillset is just about two or three rungs over my head.

we had a cisco guy on every shift (all of whom were conversant with serial cables)

Plus side, it's a SanFran based company, so you know it's trendy kewl.

@WesleyDavid Sounds like a 'learning oppertunity'

and we had A and B shift DC Techs for rack-and-stack

@MarkHenderson Don't make me make you ban me.

9:56 PM
@voretaq7 see, that gets me wet.

Oh we have new mods - so I guess I have to get ritually abused by two more people to make it all official.

@WesleyDavid Sup jerk

@JoelESalas Still a loser, so there's that. Supwitchew?

@WesleyDavid New job is p good, p hard

@ewwhite ...$job[-1] is the company that had our UPS short itself, causing both generators to catch fire, and ultimately making the datacenters Dark, Warm, and Quiet for about 4 hours...

9:57 PM
@WesleyDavid I've definitely noticed that there are nearly ZERO mid-level SysAdmin jobs out there. And I've actually seen several places looking for a Masters in CompSci + 10-12 years for their regular System Administrator slots.

@Adrian fuck that shit

@JoelESalas LA based still? Is it webscaled no-ops mongo optimized Devops-as-a-service goodswag?

90% of what people have learned in the last 10 years is probably junk
@WesleyDavid Yes so webscale and moe ~

@ewwhite Also they were bought by a company shortly before I left, and that company was then bought by Best Buy, so they're basically the Enterprise Geek Squad now...

@JoelESalas If I eat the hair that you cut off can I absorb some of your powers?

9:58 PM
@WesleyDavid I already cut it and threw it into the garbage

@JoelESalas You didn't want anyone to take your powers!

@JoelESalas wait the new job made you cut your hair?

@voretaq7 No, I cut it into a mohawk

I thought your Samsonesque DevOps powers came from your rich, flowing locks

9:59 PM
@JoelESalas yeah, it's ridiculous. I'm pretty sure it's because they actually want programmers who are willing to do sysadmin work and that's how HR decided they'd week the pool out.

If you shaved it into a mohawk does that mean you only know puppet provisioning now? :)
oh that is SO not a mohawk

@JoelESalas Tryin' to be fly.

you don't even have any hair glue to hold it up.

Fauxhawk.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HAIR?????

10:00 PM
Ke$ha would not be down with that.

@Adrian Horrible fight. The clippers won. It was terrible.

@JoelESalas Who's that?

@TomO'Connor Herrow.

@JoelESalas Cute.
Hey @WesleyDavid

10:00 PM
@TomO'Connor So since you're a numod, you have to ritually abuse me.
I think a kickban is in order.

@WesleyDavid he's also a cat

@voretaq7 He's a bigcat.

so he could just shit in your litter box or something.

@WesleyDavid More than I do usually?

10:01 PM
@TomO'Connor Well, you have more powers now, so I think you've got to abuse them.

@voretaq7 Perfect!

@voretaq7 Speaking of, I've gone to a buzzcut now. I guess it's the new-ops thing to do?

@WesleyDavid It's summer, I have to decide if I keep my hair its current length or go with my usual "angry Marine" summer hair style
(pro: you get mistaken for a Marine in civvies during fleet week. Con: you get mistaken for a Marine in civvies during fleet week...)

I'm a 3,4,5 fade to a 7. I'm considering a skin fade to a 3 up top
Do the @Cole thing.

10 days left of work!

10:05 PM
@WesleyDavid don't call him 'thing' just because he was born male :P

@DennisKaarsemaker Cole transcends mere humanity.

@WesleyDavid vogonity.
2

@DennisKaarsemaker Bogonity.

@WesleyDavid Bogosity (A/K/A the OS X Disk I/O Subsystem)

See, I was doing billable work, then I come in here and I'm talking about haircuts, ritual abuse, and sex changes. The hell, man?

10:07 PM
Oh freddled gruntbuggly/thy micturations are to me/As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee.
Groop I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes. And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon, see if I don't!
2

@WesleyDavid ...why aren't you billing for this?

@DennisKaarsemaker Lewis Carrol called. He wants his absinthe and LSD back.

@WesleyDavid I think you may not know where your towel is.

@WesleyDavid tell him to call Douglas Adams.

@DennisKaarsemaker Vogon poetry was banned by the 37th Geneva Convention. I have to insist you stop now, or report to the hague for a stern talking-to by the war crimes tribunal.
(listening to the proceedings of the ICC War Crimes Tribunal was ALSO banned by that same convention...)

10:09 PM
Okay, I'm off to find things to bill for.
Who wants to kickban me?
Glances at @TomO'Connor

@voretaq7 grunthos approves.

@WesleyDavid Yelling Bird is calling.

@WesleyDavid liiiiiicks

@TomO'Connor kiiiiiiiicks

10:10 PM
FADES!
I just got my hair cut today

Skin to 1 1/2
@TomO'Connor <3

Fine, then if no one will volunteer to abuse me, I'll just have to abuse myself!
4

@WesleyDavid POIDH.

@WesleyDavid careful - you'll go blind!

10:11 PM
/defenestrates self

silly boxcat

@WesleyDavid So, when do you test ride bikes that you're considering buying?

@freiheit that's a moot question. @WesleyDavid is not considering buying a bike.

@DennisKaarsemaker Because he already bought one? wow!

Remember in Jurassic Park, when the black guy is trying to figure out what command Dennis uses to restart the system, and he just starts guessing at different commands? Why didn't he just run the history command to check? <-- Random thought that came to mind while debugging an iSCSI problem...

10:20 PM
@KevinSoviero What if it wasn't bash?

@JoelESalas Then the raptor should eat them.

I'm hopped up on 300mg of caffeine, and I'm bored! I may be forced to spontaneously combust soon...

@KevinSoviero You seem to take a few artificial stimulus pills
That's not a healthy habit dude

@DennisKaarsemaker That one's good.

10:24 PM
Neither for that matter is drinking loads of coffee or red bull to get the same affect

Hey, I drink loads of coffee, and it hasn't OMGWTFBBQ
5

@MarkHenderson I replaced coffee with 100mg caffeine pills...

@Adrian how's Seattle in september? Freezing or just wet?

@KevinSoviero Yeah but you took three of them

@MarkHenderson So?

10:25 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker September's still summer here. It's glorious.

@KevinSoviero ohman ohman ohman I'm about to BLAST OFF

We're a full 6 weeks behind the rest of the world due to the ocean.

@Adrian ah great. I'm probably coming over from the 8th to the 29th

@DennisKaarsemaker A reminder to you (and everyone else): The first round of beer is on me if you visit Seattle.

@KevinSoviero A double-shot espresso is still < 200mg

10:26 PM
I want to visit Seattle so badly, but I haven't had cause to just yet.

So that's like drinking 4 coffees in a row, but without having to piss

If I ever visit Seattle, it will only be for the express purpose of wiping Microsoft off the face of the earth.

@DennisKaarsemaker Cool. September's awesome here. My favorite time of year. It's just starting to rain a little bit again, so most things have gone back to green but it's not week-long sets of drizzle quite yet.
Seattle is nearly a desert during July/August, actually. We get about 1 inch of rain in those 8 weeks on average.

@MichaelHampton You know Amazon is HQ'd there too, and they are a Linux outfit...

If anyone actually knows anything about SLES...
0
Q: /dev/ipmi0 does not exist R710 SLES 11 SP2

random0munkyI have been searching and searching and searching and haven't been successful in finding the solution to this problem of trying to get ipmitool to work which is dependent on /dev/ipmi0 to exist which it doesn't unfortunately. Here's some information that I think would be helpful: # service ipmi ...

10:28 PM
@MarkHenderson Depends on the coffee really... 16oz starbucks drip is 330mg.

@ewwhite Dude, you got a Dell.

@MichaelHampton No. Just whack the PMs. MS is actually full of really amazing programmers who are trussed up by PMs and Executives that couldn't find their asses with flashlights and approach radar.
@Tanner Dude. The staff hate them, but the Clover machines are pretty awesome.

@ewwhite All I know is, don't use it

@ewwhite Meh... I suspect he did something stupid like disable his DRAC card.

Man I would much rather work from home. I've gotten more work done in an hour than I do in a day at the office.

10:32 PM
I wish my community college here offered a class on biochemistry... I'm currently going though a biochem phase.

Windows, you so crazy...

ba-dum tss

Hey guys
There's a room owner thing that's labeled "Read Only"

@DennisKaarsemaker one of my clients...

10:33 PM
So I'm just gonna try that out, ok?

@Tanner I don't know how big 16oz is but that sounds huge

@Adrian Sounds nom. Wonder if they have one around here... Normally I get a funny look when I ask for "drip coffee; just coffee."

@MDMarra That's either a Valley or a Coast Citrus truck

@ewwhite somehoe I'm not surprised :-)

16 US fluid ounces = 473.176473 millilitres

10:34 PM
@Tanner They all have drip. Some have good drip.

@ewwhite for real?

David Fullerton on February 01, 2013

It’s 2013, almost three years after we first raised money and started growing beyond the first four employees. At the time, Jeff wrote a great blog post about working remotely, basically laying out our plan for how we were going to make it work. Now we’re a few years in and it’s time to update it with, well, what actually happened.

First, where are we now? Stack Exchange now employs 75 people, roughly evenly split between sales (and sales ops and marketing) and product (development, ops, design, community management). The product side is where our remote working happens: we have 16 full-time re …

That's half a fucking litre of coffee. Who the fuck drinks that much coffee?

@MarkHenderson me

@MarkHenderson I do...

10:34 PM
not at once though

@MarkHenderson At least.

I drink a fuck ton of coffee
not as much as I used to though

I need to find a job soon. Starting to get like @ewwhite and prefer working un-clothed.

YOU PEOPLE ARE CRAZY
3
ALL CRAZY

@voretaq7 I wish my company would
Whoa, at least my pants are still on @Adrian

10:35 PM
@Adrian If my cock was as big as ewwhite's I would work de-robed as well
3

@MarkHenderson Actually, I used to drink 3 quad-shots of espresso daily.

@Adrian How are you still alive?

@Adrian Okay that's a bit much.

What's lame delegation as it relates to DNS?

@MarkHenderson I have 5 espressos a day

10:36 PM
@MarkHenderson It's possible that I'm not, just that my body hasn't figured it out yet due to all the caffeine.

@JoelESalas Oh. my. god.
You people are all going to have heart attacks at 50

@MarkHenderson Good, being alive is annoying

In domain name systems, a lame delegation, also known as a lame response, is a type of error that results when a name server is designated as the authoritative server for a domain name for which it does not have authoritative data. American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) has a Draft Policies and Proposals concerning lame delegations - Policy 2002-1: Lame Delegations in IN-ADDR.ARPA . See https://www.arin.net/policy/proposals/2002_1.html

@MarkHenderson Actually, a recent study said that as many as 5 cups of coffee per day can be beneficial and reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men

Ugh wtf

10:37 PM
@MarkHenderson Dude, we're sysadmins. ALL sysadmins abuse some substance or another. Just like half the Devs in this town smoke weed.

@freiheit yeah i read that

@MarkHenderson we're sysadmins.

But uh, I don't get it

Japan DC Y U NO WORK

@MDMarra It's hard to die of prostate cancer when your heart explodes...
2

10:37 PM
@freiheit Again, we're syadmins - we don't HAVE hearts!
2

@MDMarra As opposed to prostate cancer in women

@MDMarra Right. So one of the listed authoritative servers for a domain doesn't know that it's authoritative. If you're seeing it in your logs, it usually means "OMG somebody somewhere on the internet has a broken domain that somebody at your site tried to use."

I'm getting a Experienced the following operational errors trying to retrieve replication information - 58 <insert server name>. The server is still on, so it's not an unsuccessful demotion.

@MDMarra The "authoritative" server doesn't issue AA responses.

Fucking Japan

10:39 PM
@freiheit "Lame delegation" -- because saying "Administrator responsible for example.com is an imbecile!" was deemed impolite by the IETF.

@voretaq7 I thought it was someone trying to encode an MP3 using DNS

@MDMarra The real answer is, 99% of the time: logging { category lame-servers { null; }; };

what makes a DNS server think that it's authoritative

@MDMarra The zone is defined in it's config as such.

@MarkHenderson Stereotypes.

10:41 PM
@84104 So, basically a server is listed in the NS records for a domain, but the copy of the zone that it holds isnt marked as authoritative?
Is that right?

@MDMarra Pretty much.

got it

@MDMarra It may or may not have a copy of the zone at all.

Oh for fuck sack

@freiheit Right
ok cool
pretend none of that just happened and continue thinking I'm smart

10:43 PM
I'm going to think that you didn't know before, but now do and are therefore smarter than you were before.

that works too

How about that time that someone type the DNS server in wrong on the NIC settings.

@MDMarra Now I'm kind of curious how you guys maintain DNS zones. Is it through some GUI? It would totally bug me not being able to manually set up zones in a text file.

I was not born knowing how DNS works. I don't expect it of anyone else.

@Adrian I don't manage any public zones
And AD DNS does funky stuff like every server has a SOA record for itself

10:44 PM
@Adrian I manage them in a text file (with a script that generates the in-addr.arpa stuff). (actually, this is a bit of a lie. I manage them in many text files with a bunch of $INCLUDE stuff gluing it together...)

So sometimes I have academic questions about public DNS since I don't really deal with it ever and AD Integrated DNS isn't the same flavor as what's generally used on the public internet
I've primarily lived in the cozy confines of the internal firewall :)

@MDMarra Nope, on the internets, DNS is run on Gentoo servers with PowerDNS

@ewwhite I gather that powerDNS is bad then?

@84104 no, not necessarily. I was surprised to see it in such heavy use.

10:47 PM
@ewwhite don't the root servers use BIND and NSD?

@84104 PowerDNS seems to be fine. It's just also the obvious choice for people that don't know what they're doing, I think. Better choice than djbdns, which is for people that have deeply misled themselves about knowing what they're doing.

@ewwhite Ah. I'm just so used to everything mentioned along with Gentoo being a punching bag around here.

@84104 Fuck gentoo

And that explains why my son is so excited about that movie that he can't form cogent sentences.

@MDMarra I had powerdns at the job with ethabelle... and they were a bunch of ISP-nanog types... so I was informed that BIND is for n00bs.

10:48 PM
@84104 I feel that usually Gentoo is the punch*line*, not bag...

Meh, the redsox v yankees game doesn't start until 8, but I have to be in fucking Wilmington by 9am tomorrow :(
@ewwhite Pretty sure most of the roots run BIND though
So the internet is literally powered by it

The Internet is such a weird place

PowerDNS is the one that lets you adjust a whole bunch of stuff that breaks the DNS RFC, right?
All my experience is with Bind.

@JoelESalas I who have to maintain a number of Gentoo servers sympathize with that sentiment, but really I just hate the kernel. The rest isn't any more trouble than any other distro.

@84104 Why add more trouble though? The problem with Gentoo is hubris, the idea that Gentoo users somehow "know better" than those binary distro peasants

10:52 PM
@JoelESalas Which they don't.

You could always go djbdns if you like pain.

I think I'm more forgiving of Gentoo because I have to deal with Solaris.

@Zoredache s/like pain/like a lot of pain/;

@Zoredache Oh, that's the tinydns people. Just use BIND.

@ewwhite This one works in your favour, so don't look a gift horse in the mouth

11:01 PM
Anyone here done a ZFS CIFS/kerb5 fileserver as part of an AD deployment?

11:35 PM
@MichaelHampton Drupal.org is clearly getting hammered. It took 2 hours for my replacement login information to be sent to me.

165 rep for the day, crap.

11:55 PM
@MichaelHampton Cry me a river

It was all that time I spent on "stupid", I'm sure.
