@MarkHenderson If you can pickup GPUs with busted RAMDACs (the part that drives the screen) you can get a cost effective setup that will pay for itself in months. Full price is unlikely to ever pay for itself.

FPGAs are almost in the same boat. They're more expensive, but use much less power, but it's about the same on the whole. ASICs use less power and have much higher output. ASIC mining will be the only option soon as the difficulty rises.

GPUs are still good for LiteCoin however (exactly the same as BitCoin, like litterally a fork, with 3 differences: 1. 80 M coin total 2. Blocks ever 2.5 minutes 3. scrypt POW). BitCoin difficulty is about 12M right now; LiteCoin is about 600.
