01:00 - 04:0004:00 - 22:00

4:00 AM
In the lineup, it would be #3 :-)
So it's like the hand has been taken from the left (from the player perspective) and put on the right

probably some clip art from staples.. but I do hope that critiques will stay constructive and professional

At some point, though, it just gets funny.
I got this in my spam folder, I love reading spam

hahaha that's awesome

I got two new emails from the Nigerian lady needing help

People are very interested in getting LCD supplies from me lately

4:02 AM
I like the last hand
did you ever get those messages on the phone? I keep being txted by princes and lonely russian girls

no but at work I keep getting a call that I won a cruise trip...

there are some really cool stories about people actually answering to / trolling them

I met the guy who found the DNS Race Condition bug at a conference, also calculated the penetration of the Sony Rootkit, and told him some of my theories about what's going on with spam, and he laughed at me and said "oh, you're just figuring it out, huh?"

ya at work we once fell for one and then realized the credit card company let us keep the money.. it was an online order that turned out to be a fraud

"if you think THAT's messed up, let me tell you 10 way scarier things."
Maybe I don't want to know.
I basically theorized that it's reverse tunnel traffic of people who don't want to identify the recipient location of a hack. That's correct. But a very simple scheme.
Propagate information widely enough that you can dip a cup into the information ocean, piece together the stuff you sent to look for things for you inside of systems, assemble it all back together anonymously because everyone is getting it.
This is on topic for graphic design, though.
Because if you make a graphic "clean" enough, with enough intent, to point out any "noise" so it stands out... then this can't be done
And of course, the uncleanliness of the graphic with the hands is a humorous nod I think.
Each little circle "pox mark" has a coordinate, and an angle, and a color
@Gramps I had a long argument with those "your computer has a virus, we're from Microsoft" Indian scams that called at 6am to my deceased grandmother's house, which I am helping process.
They are brazen. Absolutely brazen.
You can't put any fear of God in them, even if you try.

4:12 AM
@HostileFork I was going to ask about that

@Yisela Ever study "Illegal numbers" :-)

no, looking into it

Graphics and production design quiz: what number is in this one? :-)

(also discovered I had a typo in my code that I asked about in SO and that's why it wasn't working - feel really bad for the person that answered)
"This video is not available in your country"

@Yisela man I asked a question earlier and was hit 5 times!

4:18 AM
@Yisela See the LEGO movie, if it's available in your country. :-)

@Gramps hit as... replied? or punched?

Or viewed

I was discussing the issue with jQuery with a friend and I told him to watch this... After posting the question I had about 6 comments and 4 answers within 5 mins
1
Q: Display array into span with jQuery

GrampsTrying to learn more about jQuery I have run into an issue with trying to display an inline CSS into a <span>. I am trying to take an array and display it as followed: <div class="colorbar"> <span style="background: #A56AC2"></span> <span style="background: #E2CED7"></span> <span st...

Reaching back to the discussion of the potential of someone to improve, from knowing less to knowing more, I tried to help a friend with a business card design. And she was blond, and tall, and got the nickname lighthouse. And she wore purple and pink a lot. Another friend, who had been a photographer for Vogue, said she dressed like a Dr. Seuss character. But these were the things she liked. She even had a font she wanted to use.
I dutifully tried to execute on what was asked for.
It wasn't particularly easy, at the time, to get the effect. In a $50 program. I thought it looked good, most people seemed to like it.

@HostileFork erm.... just glanced at that and the small text almost made think it said light house porn

4:23 AM
@Gramps Methinks that might be observer bias :-)

ha ha

Anyway, that was among the "you suck read a book" mass attack I got, very similar to Ivan
And it was hard because, compared to what others I knew did, it was technically adept

@Gramps xD

I got very angry for reasons I may someday chronicle in a post or video or somesuch. But afterward, I had a dream, a vision actually.
And I thought about this other concept, of an anthropomorphic lighthouse.
And I decided I'd cross lots of i's and dot lots of t's

hey @Yisela I have a question for you.

4:26 AM
shoot

And work out a figure in a golden rectangle, and make the ground and figure equal...

you should do it

you ever strive to make everything in CSS?

define everything :)

even circles and objects I try to spend the time coding instead of using an image

4:26 AM
graphics?

everything but an image

to be honest, haven't done websites in a long time... what about SVG?
I think I mostly use images

Used histograms, fit in golden rectangle...

@HostileFork very Seuss ;)

I do .svg with .png fallback

4:28 AM
Hacked through tons of variants
Justified mathematically

@Gramps that's how I'd do it. What would be the advantage of using only CSS? I'd find it terribly annoying and slow to make any changes to CSS shapes

goal of the year is to get noticed on CSS awwards

Adjusted whenever theory and practice did not fit

@Gramps nice goal!!

4:30 AM
plus I thought it would help me gain more respect for the power of CSS and jQuery

@Gramps I do not think either of them are powerful. They are de facto standards, and I abide by them.

@HostileFork explain

Their power comes from agreements of people to accept them as standards.

@Gramps I like the goal, or the challenge to "only use x", but not sure if you need to do everything with those tools to justify their goodness. Knowing which one to use for each particular case sounds more effective IMHO

The mythos of CSS is that you can somehow capture the layout scaffold of a website abstractly, through a kind of equation, that is computed and can dynamically reflow as pieces of the system change.
So you can say "oh this column relates to that column because this one takes up 20% of the space, and the other one 80% of the space" and then there might be some beneficial logic that can adjust this such that it will have a pleasing degradation from one kind of screen to another.
But it's emperor-has-no-clothes-stuff, designed by kids with no clue, throwing out the experience of decades of formalism by people who knew anything about anything... and really leading to a bunch of unmaintainable junk now being deferred to preprocessing languages that are leaky abstractions and it's really... the height of mediocrity.
BUT... and this is a big BUT
There's a new culture emerging, about sharing information quickly, that isn't about patenting everything and locking it up in a vault and lording it over everyone for all time to come.
It's a scrappy culture, with terrible technology, but this culture has overthrown many corporate brain trusts in many areas.
Not for technical merit, but for sharing and freedom etc.
A bad, free standard... may be better than a good, locked up one
In any case, to close on my "design as a furious response", the front of the card came out pretty well, I haven't attacked a typographical redesign of this 5 year old effort

4:37 AM
"A bad, free standard... may be better than a good, locked up one" I will have to think about that

I'd go after the type a lot now, for more customization
But the logo was versatile, it worked in silhouette or not
@Gramps I have converted some old projects to jQuery lately, and it is at least getting standardized. But it's not rigorous programming. I know that it's tempting to work in the medium that is easiest to deploy, and the status quo, but you might venture to learn what was going on before and continuing after...
Another project of mine, if @Gramps and @Yisela don't mind looking at, recently launched: Blackhighlighter

@HostileFork silhouette definitely stands out
I can almost picture your friend in it :)
@HostileFork this looks seriously cool
I completely lack the knowledge to fully grasp it

@Yisela I appreciate any feedback on the confusing bits. The thing is, I conceived it in kind of an instant, in response to a guy who wasn't technical who had sued the government and was having trouble with various red tape...asking if we could technically solve a problem he perceived...
So because I understand it, and his problem, it makes perfect sense to me

oh, I don't think it's confusing
I meant more what's behind it, that's what I probably wouldn't understand
I think you did a great job in pointing out the example uses

@Yisela In real life she is a dangerous monster. But I'll design for any client, I'm Switzerland.

4:49 AM
haha
do you mean that?
would you design for anyone?
for a landmine maker? for monsanto?

Would love the opportunity. Have you seen about the artists who used to paint commissions for oppressive churches?

no
find it difficult to believe they would convince me, but send link if you have one

Well, Moby let the Gap use his music
And then donated the money to charity
He said "I could turn them down, sure, but they'd find someone else"

so? let them find someone else

Nah, better to subvert subtly

4:52 AM
(I dont thing the gap and monsanto are on the same level)

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
No, but, even better.

sounds like get into the system to change it from the inside
better because it's not at the end of the spectrum?

I can tell you haven't seen the LEGO movie :-)

haha

blasted... I cant remember how to change the focus color on an input form

4:53 AM
I will go ready for some transcendental revelation

Plot of the movie is subversion from within
Well, I just saw it yesterday, still sort of on my mind

I don't believe in that anymore :)
just like the system turning you evil, to really be within you need to become a member
that changes you
not getting sentimental here, it just happens, similar to being a participant observant and then "becoming native"
we can't help become native
spend long enough anywhere, you'll internalize it and soon enough you'll be justifying your actions

True dat.

so many things to read, thanks for the links

But that's why I like calibrating exercises... the idea of the "undercover CEO" going and getting a job at the company they work at.

4:57 AM
@HostileFork yes! agree!
it can go the other way

There's a DVD extra on Shallow Hal
About the fat-suit prototype team working to see how believable they could get the outfit on Gwynneth Paltrow
The makeup team and such met months before filming
With her, and they did the whole thing, the makeup and all

(great makeup btw)

And they sent her out to the hotel bar and around

(right?)

Well, best in the business I'd guess
Anyway, so she got to go around wearing this prosthetic and go around and about, ordering drinks, just being normal, but experience the difference.
Jewel did an undercover karaoke thing too
Fake nose and such, singing her own songs at karaoke

5:01 AM
who is she?

Country singer

(I got to go in 4 minutes)
ah!

you never heard of jewel?

nope

later!

5:01 AM
not by name at least
so to conclude today's debate: There is hope.
:P

glad to say Ive completed my website now time to build it into a theme =)

@Yisela I didn't see any debate really

well.. talk
I think I prefer talk to debate

I may only speak for myself, but

build collectively

5:03 AM
In showing my not as good vs. good work, I think I could have gotten to good much faster with productive help and not having to go claw and nail it and ignore people like Ivan
And I might even be quite better than good if they had just been cordial

I think you had bad luck in the sort of feedback you received

And I think the great moderation question is, how to take people who know a bit, and keep them from getting attitude and lording it over people who might know less, and get a bit of humility on their own part.
I don't think it's random, I think it's anonymous internet

moderation question?
more like a life lesson

Well, I don't think Ivan is the only person who will take that stance and hold to it
It would be a loss to just say "okay, bye" and ban them because they certainly must know things.
And voting people into oblivion is a form of banning, sort of
It creates a negativity that keeps them returning, and as such, I abided by your delete suggestion for the last remark

according to facts, people who do not bring anything constructive to the site leave by themselves, and luckily for the OP the majority of users were hopefully welcoming

5:05 AM
Well I'm not super worried about the loss of Ivan

true about the downvotes, yes

But then, that makes me worried about it
I worry about my lack of worry

not saying this is the case cause I don't know him, but some people won't change

Because he probably could write a good critique

even if slapped in the face with the truth
yes, could. Will?
got to go, training

5:06 AM
Horses, water, drinking. Later!

nice to meet you

Same

I'll think about it and report if I get to any conclusions
adios
Bye @Gramps!!
(forgot: Nice to see you running for mod!!!!!)

have a great afternoon!

now, yes, adios

5:08 AM
@Yisela I know there are better out there but I hope you and John get the spots

Speaking of good design vs bad design, man, these pet watering things are great.
There are good answers to design problems, and bad ones.
This is a good one.
I could nitpick about the lack of monitoring for failure, or the need to refill. Sure.
But it works for water. For food, it looks like they haven't got it right.
It seems to me though, that if they can make those cups that reveal pictures as they fill or whatever, that they should have some ability to reveal a red stripe or other alert if the level dips below a certain point
Something more foolproof than an electomechanical sensor, anyway

5:28 AM
“@TerrifyingPosts: Nothing has ever seemed more legit than this http://t.co/0UMUgVOemC” Your writing prompt for the day.

7 hours later…
1:00 PM
anyone around for a quick critique?
guess that's a no :)

morning @Bakabaka
whats up?

hey @Ryan.
I''m trying to decide to leave a vector design as-is or to add bitmap textures to it.
makes managable preview
how're you? still shooting pics?

right now I'm working on a half page advertisement and trying not to pass out

Hey that looks pretty good

1:11 PM
huh? why would that cause you to pass out?
thanks!

i rode a bicycle to work this morning for the first time

how far?

I know I ate 200 calories after riding and an unknown additional number in a cupcake too so maybe 350-400 calories. apparently thats not enough lol
wish i had a banana with me
about 7.5 miles
12 km
What kind of bitmap texture are you thinking about?

ah, that's about my distance
so I kinda know how you feel
I was thinkong of makiing the background a dark brown and adding something from cgtextures
cgtextures.com
maybe some pavement or cobblestones -- it's for a charity team that does a cycling tour

I wouldn't. Right now it has a very art deco feel and texture isn't really a part of that style.

1:16 PM
good one. bakelite and teak do show up in Deco, but I don't think those'll fit. Thanks.
there's no candy bar machine to fulfill your needs?

nah I work in a small office. i just gotta make it to noon, gonna buy a pizza from a place in walking distance, that'll give me plenty of carbs
ive got a piece of mahi here in the fridge too but protein isn't what i need right now

I like the design, @Bakabaka
and morning Ryan

thanks, @JohnB!

@JohnB morning bud

and morning
(afternoon here ;))
how's your election campaign coming along?

1:24 PM
hahah

gonna guess you mean Johns and not mine

both presumably

actually, both of yours
and... what's mahi, @Ryan?

I feel absent from mine, hectic week at work for me. I should be out there shaking hands and kissing babies!

mahi mahi is a type of white sea fish
@JohnB lol funny you should say that, I came real close to putting a photo of myself with my baby nephew in my nomination thing

1:25 PM
Mahi-mahi is one of the best fish.

The mahi-mahi or common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is a surface-dwelling ray-finned fish found in off-shore temperate, tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Also known widely as dorado, it is one of two members of the Coryphaenidae family, the other being the pompano dolphinfish. Being referred to as a "dolphin" causes it to be confused with the more widely known marine mammals called dolphins. The name mahi-mahi means very strong in Hawaiian. In other languages the fish is known as dorade coryphène, lampuga, llampuga, lampuka, lampuki, rakingo, calitos, or maverikos. Nom...

@Ryan you have good taste in music, can I steal a full album recommendation from you?
need something to put me in the zone and get a bunch of busywork done

ah, dorado

I've been listening to a lot of Jake Bugg. Though thats usually when I'm driving. Still pretty good though
right now I'm listening to Donovan, its a bit easier for me to write copy with softer lyrics
(and JohnB never asked for my music opinion again heh)

nope, I've got Jake Bugg open right now! Never heard of him before, great sound
had to trudge through some accounting software upgrades which took way longer (all day) than I anticipated, so now I'm swamped yay

1:36 PM
oh thanks that reminds me 3 things in CC wanted to upgrade, I should get on that

2:25 PM
Ooh Breaking News: sxc.hu was just rebranded to freeimages.com

at least that url's easier to remember

ah I've been a member of sxc.hu before it was sxc.hu though I can't remember what its original name was. its been well over a decade now. As Shutterstock and iStock continue to buy out all the little "free" sites to force the higher quality uploads to the paid side

...and getty does the same to iStock and Shutterstock :/

no if memory serves Getty is owned by iStock
I think Shutterstock has a higher end one as well but can't think of it off the top of my head

:O ah, I thought it was the other way around: 'iStock by gettyimages'
then again, I don't mind paying a little fee for a good image.

2:31 PM
hmm you could be right i know their same company. no clue which one they have as the main corporation
I put that on SXC.HU back in 2003
heh over a decade ago now
its been downloaded almost 400 times

feels prehistoric

stock.xchng (also known as SXC) is a website providing free-to use stock photography and illustrations, its name being a reduced version of "stock exchange" (meaning the exchange of stock photography, and a play on the term stock exchange). The site was launched in February 2001 by Peter Hamza, and allows users to contribute, share and download high-resolution photographs and illustrations free of charge. Contributors are encouraged to submit material to enhance their photography career through wider public exposure. In 2009, the site had over 2,500,000 registered users (1,000,000 in th...
never really thought about it but wonder if there was ever a legal dispute with stackexchange over the name

oh, nice. I always wonder ho much you, as a contributor, gain from a like amount of downloads on sites like iStock and Shutterstock
lol

ive never uploaded to a pay service. im happy to give my photos out for free usage
my understanding though is to be successful on the pay services and make any sort of passive income you need to really work at it. great photos of highly sought subject matter, time post processing it, and then tagging and promoting it

2:55 PM
...which is a job in and of itself

3:31 PM
@Bakabaka An arity dance party! All right! :-)
Overall good theme, but the first thing that jumps out at me is the overlap of that pink triangle on the text.
I might suggest generally a "less is more" approach. I think the ladies4life pink logo in the middle clutters, for instance...and you'd get more breathing room for the type on the top if you left it out and shrunk the font size a bit.
There's not enough contrast between the white and yellow on the intersection of the line with the white triangle on middle right so they sort of bleed together

@HostileFork thanks, I already shrunk the main type, that was one of the main concerns
and, unfortunately, the arity dance party throwers really want their logo on the poster...

You can work the logo in elsewhere

might move it to the bottom tho

You might also make it negative; do it black inside a filled pink area on a triangle
Might funk it up a little if the triangle has the lines too.
I'm going to assume "ruimte voor logo's" is your watermark and not part of the actual print?

hm, nice idea... worth playing with
'ruimte voor logo's' translates as 'space for logotypes' -- the client needs to send me some sponsors' logos to put there

3:42 PM
Definitely give yourself some space to do them in negative, then

but I may find another solution for that, dependant upon the logo's shapes and colours

Client isn't always right, sometimes you have to fight for the design...

hear, hear!
lol

With flyer design, I'd generally suggest a 2-sided print, and ask for control over the front but loosen it up on the back for all the random bad suggestions they want to make.

thanks for the ideas

3:50 PM
Sure

Q: Would you like to add the word "EDITION" to the edited questions

IlanThere is a frequent situation when we/OP edit the post and the connection with the answers brakes/changes/looks different. There are questions with more than 10 editions (?!). My suggestion is if someone make a substantial editing - to write word "EDITION" in the body of the post / at the end ...

is there a way I can change my email / transform my account into a stackexchange account if my current account is via gmail?

open ID I think is where its at??
anyone know if you can limit page requests within a certain time in the .htaccess?

not a clue
are faded out users still in chat?
@eric ought to be logged out
other eric

9:30 PM
@JohnB Have you noticed a ton of Indian recruiters/headhunters around philly? I keep running into serious communication barriers over the phone when I follow up on or get calls regarding an application.

@Eric they are away

Q: Text box on the "reject suggested edit" dialog is misaligned

Abby T. MillerHere's a screenshot from the reject dialog on http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits: (Ignore the orange annotation - I'm using a screenshot I made for another post.)

I thought I had closed all windows on my new user, but I had one open somewhere. That's why I asked.
