@Scott That was in reference to your stared comment, "What's the best tool to make the best image..."

1:46 AM
@HostileFork You are right. Maybe she would vectorize it to perfection. So what ... Then they would learn the hard way. At some point they would realize that competition does pay for design and it pays off big time. They can go bankrupt because of this logo or DIY packaging design and I am dead serious about it. The naming itself is an issue here. Words like gravity and motion gives 73 million pages on Google. She should carefully think about if building a brand with no knowledge about branding is a good idea. — Ivan 5 hours ago
home + depot, with -"home depot" to exclude the words used together in sequence, give 89,100,000 results. I'm placing a call to the Home Depot CEO to tell them that Ivan can put them back on track (for a fee, of course.)

Q: Why can't we have additional mods instead of replacing the current ones?

DominicFirstly, I'd like to state that the current mod team is excellent. Specifically because it's a great mixture of traits; Yisela the big empathetic heart, JohnB the peacemaker and AlanG the wise. Next I'd like to empathise for a moment and wonder how it would feel to have worked so hard to bring ...

12:36 PM
hi Ryan, hi Pearson

@Yisela @RandomO'Reilly I hope Random runs too. I'll remove myself if either Random, Alan, or Gramps decide to run.

@PearsonArtPhoto trying to find that conversation where I think Abby said we could potentially ask for a 4th mod

morning Yisela.... are you traveling or just up in the middle of the night??

@Ryan Why would you remove yourself?
it's 12:37 am here :)
so votes get more distributed?

Good luck with that.

12:38 PM
haha
chat search is not the neatest

I don't know how the voting works but if I'm allowed to vote for 3 people I'd go for you, JohnB, and one of the 3 I just named.

appreciate that

I think I'd just wait for a few months and start a new election again.

If I'm not even going to vote for myself over you all then there's no reason to not remove myself

The only reason I was elected to be an SFF mod is because I voted for myself. It was a really close election...

12:39 PM
Cant tell if Sarcasm or not
Of course I also have no clue what SFF is
Sci-Fi Fantasy?

If I hadn't voted for myself, then someone else would have taken my seat.

haha

SFF= Science Fiction and Fantasy.

yeah, thinking the same xD

Yisela and JohnB are sure wins, no doubt.

12:40 PM
I dont know

The third is a bit trickier.

Alan is guaranteed if he wants it

this election thing is so stressful, how did you do it 3 times Pearson!?

I personally think that putting you two as moderators was the best decision that SE took towards making this a successful site.
Easy. I only cared about one of them;-)

f hell, wow, thanks

12:42 PM
Seriously, the site was drifting around, not really formed, until you and John took the reigns as moderators. You've injected new life blood into the site.

you and John have my vote as well, @Yisela

I think I cant sleep because of (silly me) this... and I was actually remembering the "early days" of GD
with the older meta design, ugh

(and no offense, @Ryan, those two are just a tad more visible.)

@Bakabaka Thank you Bakabaka

maybe that will help you sleep a bit better

12:44 PM
hehe
yes

call me naïve, but why fret over it?

@Bakabaka none taken I already said they've got my votes too
though to be fair, they're more visible because they're already incumbents

"fret thy soul with crosses and with cares"

Honestly, I put Yiesla and JohnB above Alan, Alan's been good, and certainly has the knowledge, but JohnB and Yiesla have a lot more enthusiasm, which helps a ton.

Ideally I'd like to see Yisela, JohnB and either Gramps or Random end up with it. So far Random keeps saying not running though.
Anyways onto design chat. Anyone have a way to see .CR2 file thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

12:47 PM
haha

@Yisela we have a wonderful saying in Dutch, playing off the fact that the words for 'to worry (about)' and 'to care (for)' are identical. It translates as 'Do not worry, care for others instead.'
2

@Bakabaka that's perfect! I need to write it down in my moleskin of thoughts and facts :)

welcome :)
@Ryan What kind of files are those?

@Ryan Random, Gramps or you!

@Bakabaka Canon Raw
google search says I'd need a Codec. Guess this is why people use Lightroom

12:50 PM
not to troll or anything, but... use Bridge?

@Ryan Irfanview doesnt support those, right?

CRW/CR2* > Canon RAW format

Own a Canon 20D, quite familiar. I think I must have that on my computer, I seem to be able to view the CR2 thumbnails... Of course, I'm not home now, so I can't easily check...

Thanks Pearson, downloading now
Oh no i'm not. Page not found for the DL. Thanks Microsoft!
wow looks like Microsoft is taking the Mac approach. They've only got for Windows 8 up now. Getting it from CNET instead

12:54 PM
That's crazy... Windows 7 isn't that old...

@Yisela what are you up to? big deadline or something?

no, just sleepless
ahh! Ryan!! I've been practising the bridge position thing and going to handstand and to the other side
(this thing must have a name, but no idea what it is)
can't do it from bridge, like you said (and probably have forgotten by now and read this thinking wtf is this girl talking about), I need momentum, so I have to start from standing up

Yoga?
oh thats right

no, gymnastics/acrobatics
it's almost a success, I haven't broken my back yet, which is positive

that's awesome, i tweaked my back (again) last week and was doing half bridges to help fix it
pretty sure I've got a slipped disc

1:03 PM
how do you do a half bridge?
oooh no
can you fix those?
never heard of a slipped disc

its a type of herniation basically. there's a variety of ways to fix and deal with it

how did you hurt it?

I'm not really sure if its called "half bridge" but makes sense. Basically lay on my back with knees bent and drive the pelvic area up

ah, yes

combination of things, pretty sure doing heavy oblique work is the main culprit.

1:06 PM
sounds rather painful, that.

are you on painkillers?
or does the exercise help?

isn't that one of your intervertebrate cartilege discs being out of place and nuding your spinal chord?

@Bakabaka yes

had this sudden image of an invertebrate Ryan
lying on a mat like jelly

@yisela I took two Ibuprofen the first night but haven't taken anything since. Last year when it first happened was really bad and I was on Muscle Relaxants and Corticosteroids

1:09 PM
hope it gets better

ouch :(

I've been avoiding injury this year, crossing fingers
I possibly got injured in every sport I've practised

its already mostly better. ill probably just go a bit light on my workouts again this week and then go right back to it. Just no heavy oblique work. Both times its happened was after doing heavy rotational exercises for my abs

hmmm... sounds like lower back pain is a designer's occupational hazard. I'm an off-and-on patient, as well

@Bakabaka its cause we're always sitting at desks and develop bad posture and pelvic tilts

1:11 PM
that's why bridges are so good!

@Yisela what sports do you do?

tried lots of teamless sports, right now I'm doing boxing training and I start kung fu this week
I did gymnastics for a long time, and acrobatics (you know those silk long things you hang from? those)

@Ryan sounds logical

here we call those aerials. I know a guy that does that stuff

I fell from the silk thing, burnt my whole body with the friction trying to hold on to it, didn't hold on to it, fell flat on my back

1:13 PM
I've done a little boxing but my specialty is taekwondo. Never did kung fu

I'm really excited about kung fu, always wanted to do, used to do karate
boxing I think is the winner so far, the training is just insane

when I finished high school I really wanted to go to Northern Shaolin Temple in China to train instead of college. Then there was the sars outbreak and my parents wouldn't let me

can you actually do that?
amazing

@Bakabaka do you currently live in Holland?
@Ryan nice!!
but you can still go for workshops or so, right?
never too late

1:15 PM
back - see you are plotting election strategies, @Ryan :D

(you only need to fix that back)
(but hey, Bruce Lee did it!)
@RandomO'Reilly Hi!

@Yisela I could be nitpicky and say 'No, but I do live in the Netherlands', but that'd be lame
so: yes, I do :P

eh maybe one day. there's also a Master in South Korea that's developed his own style of Hapkido that I wouldn't mind learning

@Bakabaka Hehe :)

Right now I just do weights and starting bicycling

1:17 PM
Hi Random. Can I add mine to the chorus of voices that wants you to nominate yourself?

so many things to learn, only one life

@RandomO'Reilly hey I'm only running because you won't :P

@Ryan hahahahah
well, that is not a bad reason for standing as a candidate
any poop on others that might run?
@Bakabaka ?

uh... considering, thanks :)

do it guys

1:19 PM
you certainly should consider it

I'm new to all this election stuff -- GD is my SE 'home' and this is all new.
still getting used tot the non-beta site

I think it's new for most people here, it's new for me too even if I have voted in SO elections before (but always felt I was watching there, rather than participating in a more active way)

oh CKPepper just joined the mix

I think his text got cut off
or it's just that comma

ya I found it amusing -- Make sure posts are accurate,
hehe

1:23 PM
my "helpful flags: 22" looks so lame compared to the rest. And I know you @RandomO'Reilly have like a million flags

you raised a lot of flags

he might be editing still, i know i had to edit mine a few times because of the word count

I guess that coz' became a mod real quick>

i have no idea how many flags i have, or how useful they were

1:24 PM
?

it will appear next to your name when you write your nomination

@RandomO'Reilly you can see on your user profile page

@Bakabaka yeah, but only 22! :P

it's not as if that number is a secondary rep or anything

110 flags, Random

1:25 PM
i have apparently 110 helpful flags.. never dawned on me that i flag a lot
or who knows how many was not helpful

can you run for mod if you are 93 years old?
your term would be endangered

LOL
i could say 93 / (secret number)

@RandomO'Reilly when you were cleaning up tags I don't think you had enough rep yet so they were technically flags. I then went in and seconded most of them

you have a declined flag that says (you added it) "ignore this flag" :P

hahaha that is right

1:27 PM
@RandomO'Reilly the main reason I think you'd be a better mod then me is for the time you spent doing those tags to begin with

you mean the tag wiki thing?

and the fly-zapping

yeah

but guys - consider this - anyone with 20 000 rep are basically moderators
that would be scott, alan, and in a bit, DA

did you see the questions Grace Note has added? I think they are very enlightening to imagine what you'd do in different scenarios

1:29 PM
huh - link?
ah
that one, yes

do we have to answer all of these? thats going to be a lot of writing/reading

got it - excellent points

haha no idea, but it's good as a mental exercise

@RandomO'Reilly tbh, I don't see those 20k+'ers as mods -- and some of them wouldn't have it any different

1:33 PM
Scott already said he doesn't want to be a mod, that he likes how he currently has it

not surprised at that :)

i know

with that much rep the main difference is the ability to instantly delete/close questions and contact users (suspend, all that)

but the tools they have are apparently pretty close
anyway

well, sleeping time, see you in some hours

1:36 PM
g'luck with that and the bed bugs, @Yisela

I hope there are some nice nomination texts to read when I wake up :)

night, upside-down-land

you are upside-down land, we are just fine

no, that would make us downside-up land

o_O
true....

1:37 PM
WTF Mate-land
(greatest flash video of all time)

thanks again for the support and nice words Ryan and Bakabaka

anytime. don't be afraid that you'll be losing that diamondlet :)

2:03 PM
great to see you're in the running @Ryan (and ckpepper if you're lurking!)

thanks! Im rewriting my nomination thing right now. Probably shouldn't have done it while having a beer and watching the playoffs

That 1,200 character limit ends quickly
probably a good thing, I have a tendency to write too much :)

2:20 PM
what was the consensus on critique questions again?

@Bakabaka
10
Q: Guidelines for critique questions

JohnB UPDATE: Here is the official question without all the discussion fluff: What are the guidelines for asking for a critique of my work? Are critique questions even allowed here? There have been a few meta discussions regarding this subject: Asking community to critique work? How to hand...

found exactly that, thanks!

sup

hm... wouldn't it be convenient to have those in an easy-to-link-to place (faq?) so we can gently redirect newcomers to them?
hi @Gramps

@Gramps morning bud

2:49 PM
wooho
got my Underwood to work!

is that a cross between Torchwood and Underhill?

take it from me
you do NOT want to take a pile of rust and fix it unless you reeeaaally really want to
had I known then what I know now...

was that a Doctor Who / LOTR cross reference I just missed

haah - i did not pick up on that - @Bakabaka?

2:56 PM
ooh, long exposure is always fun

So nice getting to play with a new DSLR. I should really invest in a new one, mine's soooo old

did you take this, @Ryan?

yeah last night right outside my apartment

cool!

@JohnB lol yeah it was
@RandomO'Reilly wowh! nice machine

2:57 PM
@Bakabaka nightmare
pile of rust

can imagine

but at last, it works
i picked it apart entirely

@RandomO'Reilly Is this yours that we are looking at or just a photo of the model you have?

nightmare
that is mine

@Ryan looks nice. same camera as you were shooting the HDR shots with?

2:58 PM
doesn't look rusty, you must have done a lot of work on it!

@bakabaka yeah

@JohnB yes... well obviously, a lot of the rust was "surface", but it sticks
picked it apart, gave it two baths - and miraculously got it working again

excellent!

...i was perfectly prepared for that i would fail miserably, but then i would have used the pieces as arty-farty sculpture
thing is: these things are incredibly well engineered, there are some exquisitely machined parts with tolerances at 0.05mm bend one of them a smidgen and it all collapses. imagine: the gears for the ribbon :S i am no engineer, but i recognise beautiful inner workings when i see it :D

that would be too stressful for me

3:04 PM
the funniest thing: reading hundred-year-old manuals
tech writers, they are not, those are written by engineers. hilarious.

is there a noticeable difference in the writing style?

YES
god, it is hilarious

ancient script?

it is the way of thinking

elongated integral symbols instead of s'es?

3:06 PM
haha - consider this: the HOW TO comes at the end:
and there are a lot of endearing engineer-speak

oh boy

i worked - among other things - as a tech writer for some deep-water engineering-science firm, so i have an idea :)
anyway
i am just excited i got it to work, do not ask me to fix another one. the only problem now: what on earth am i going to write on it?!

typewriter instruction manuals?

lol
"how to restore your 90 year old typewriter"
"a struggle in four volumes"

3:38 PM
oh, and as to the elections; how can you not vote for disco king JohnBTravolta?

1 hour later…
4:39 PM
so how has everyone been?

drunk! and good. but they're pretty related

Remi Martinoided

anyone use Spotify and if you do what do you think of the new GUI?

4:56 PM
@Ilan nah no Cognac. I've not had hard liquor in a while. I got a 6 pack of Einstok yesterday

I've got Martin today...

you're not in USA right? What country are you in?

hm, you r right
there are some difficulties related to political wars

that doesnt narrow it down at all

that is it

5:04 PM
why so private? i expected like North Korea or something

hh
you see :)

my cousin lives there and aunt just moved there too

to North Korea or to the place in question? :))
no
:)

i cannot really understand the secrecy; I guessed your country by your name only

I c u got me
:)
thanks
:)

5:29 PM
Does anyone know how to make Blend in Ai with preview?

ya. doesn't it do it by default? been a while since i used it but thought it does
(opening AI to double check)

probably, there is some order of actions
i don't get it

i got it, seems it works differently in newer versions of AI

ya

blend your two objects together first
then select the group and go to object > blend > blend options
I don't know why but the preview doesn't work unless you do a blend first

5:37 PM
yes, i'll google it, probably the order of actions should be particular.

why google? I just told you how

your method worked though
just because it looks weird :)
curiosity
@Ryan you're right. it looks like the only way. strange

2 hours later…
7:18 PM
hmm in light of the election I went to check my flags. The main "decline" that I have is calling a particular answer spam. Not sure why a mod didn't agree with my take on this one
@JohnB you don't think this is spam?
-1
A: Designing websites

J-KCheck out the recommended books on Jason Santa Maria's website: http://jasonsantamaria.com/reading/ If you want to learn more about type, this is the holy grail: http://jasonsantamaria.com/reading/the-elements-of-typographic-style Good luck and best regards, JK

The comment makes it feel a little less spam-like but I still question it
hi @gabriellcontechtext

7:41 PM
however, the links provided are relevant to question
I comment some time ago and got the answer, thus it probably was not a spamming attempt

well for one thing if that website goes down then the answer is worthless
but also all of the links from that website or Amazon affiliate links so if anyone clicks a book they make a commission
that was the big red flag for me

right, but spam is something absolutely unrelated to the topic.

not exactly, "This question is effectively an advertisement with no disclosure. It is not useful or relevant, but promotional."
It can be related but if it requires clicking to an outside company and that company isn't free then its generally viewed as spam. Especially if the answer doesn't hold up on its own (ie: saying this site has a list of books, instead of actually listing those books)

Actually, I placed a bunch of links to shutterstock images...

was it your entire answer? and did you also show the images without people having to click through?

7:47 PM
hm, i pasted the images theirselves,
but also provided a long link with keyword as searching option
never flagged (I don't know actually)
downvoted yes, but after some period of time upvoted as well
1
A: How to make this hand-colored drawing even more fancier?

IlanI place for the inspiration some examples from shutterstock:

you can see +-

Ya you're not promoting though, you clearly said for inspiration and showed the images.
So like Dominic said, its not really a great answer. But it wouldn't be viewed as spam either

you can see +-

yes but that doesn't make it spam

I think that the answer you are talking about was from unexperienced user. They frequently try to answer without understanding what the good answer is

ya, and the comment came after I flagged which does make me think it was less intentional but its still affiliate linking
Do you know what I mean by affiliate linking?

7:58 PM
type of linking with end purpose to make money on reference?

yeah
.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0881791326/jasonsantamar-20/ref=nosim/

unclickable

I know I didn't want it clickable.
see all that stuff at the end jasonsantamar-20 places a cookie on your computer that tells amazon you came from jasonsantamar-20's recommendation. So then when you buy something that user gets a profit

ok, do you wrote this explanation in the flag comment?

i don't remember, probably not :D

8:04 PM
so :)
now, i clearly see it was ads
so, the message was right (flag), the form was partial...
mod could not see clearly
as I see it now

8:22 PM
@Ryan I couldn't find any evidence that it was self promotion, was there something fishy that you saw?

well before his comment the answer was entirely useless without clicking to the links and then on those links all of them are affiliate links to amazon

@JohnB this is the trick:

to be fair it would be a little bit hypocritical to delete because of affiliate linkage - any Amazon links posted in answers/questions (and chat too I think?) automatically get converted to affiliate links to generate revenue for SE

poor yorick

hah! really? never knew that

8:26 PM
yeah, sneaky little feature

though to be fair SE might be more inclined to want to call the other one spam since its then competition
yep sure did become an affiliate link

Who could know

@JohnB I didn't know this!

I wonder how much revenue it actually generates

probably a decent amount. I wouldn't say a ton but its another revenue stream

8:31 PM
I dont think too many people link to amazon, but there must be some

I'm guessing their main source of revenue is from the career pages then secondary stuff like ads and affiliate links
I've considered doing TalentZoo, Coroflot, and AIGA as community promotions but wasn't sure if SE would want that because of the job listings

yeah, a lot of development goes towards Careers

its same for Craigslist. Because those are the only parts where people have to pay to post in
