Q: Should I reverse a key question during an interview?

rath Int. Why should I hire you? Can. Why should I come work for you? I don't mean it in a combative or adversarial way. I'm really nervous about this question and I don't know if I'll be able to give a good answer under the pressure. I'm thinking that reversing the question may give the in...

ballsy

not very bright.. try walking into google and doing that

I like that question!
I wouldn't ask like that, but I hate interviews where everything is going in one direction (the possible employee's)

well.. the way it is worded is offensive and rude to ask an employer that
I wouldnt hire you if thats how you put it. I would be more open to the question "what are qualities/benefits at this job that I may not find in other opportunities.

I don't see wnything offensive or rude about it

to me, it sets the tone almost like I am better than your company why should I bother?

2:57 AM
well, maybe the first phrase is a little straightforward ("Why should I come work for you?")

but granted, Ive ran into this before with a cocky guy at a sign company

if you are good at what you do, you shouldn't have to beg for a position, no matter how difficult the economic situation is
otherwise it sounds like they are making you a favor by hiring you

that too
but also if you are in a customer service field and he/she came off like that it could make clients mad.

true

so many ways to look at it, in a sales position more people would be better with a confident friendly guy over a cocky dude that comes in thinking he is better than anyone ;)

3:03 AM
the answers are very good

@JohnB how do I make the arrow and not ->

@AdamSchuld which OS?

Mac

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmm
well an arrow is U+2192

hmm

3:04 AM
> First go to international system preferences-> input menu and check the box next to "Unicode hex". then switch to unicode input in the menu bar. now to enter a unicode character you hold alt and enter the hexadecimal unicode value.
so, do that then Alt+2192 maybe?
on the numpad I am assuming

&#x2192 for HTML, couldn't figure it out with a shortcut key
oops, can't forget the ;

night guys

night!
I have to either come up with an alternative for a grid layout, or make it look really really pretty
I don't like datagrids, but I think sometimes they are unavoidable

3:23 AM
gnight :)

3:37 AM
hi.

hey anuj

hey Adam

hi Anuj! how's your site going?

I have the plans ready, but I am trying hard to shift focus from UI to actual coding :), that is really hard, I feel i am not doing enough to make it pretty. it's irresistible.

3:55 AM
I've met some people who are similar, but with the code portion.. Where the nitpick the code until it's ABSOLUTELY PERFECT and beautiful looking
hard to snap out of it I guess when you are used to being a perfectionist

when it's you own work, it's just... impossible to know where to stop

There's a Paul Valery quote that goes, 'An artist never finishes his work, he merely abandons it'

excellent

4:12 AM
yeah, i think you are right :)
people just feel that they are not done with it, not yet.
but that's hazardous if you are stuck at one thing and do not move ahead, that is my case, :)

9 hours later…
1:22 PM
Anyone have a good name/term for this: i.imgur.com/BfoifRD.png?1
it's supposed to represent a user's score, and the bright gradient is revieled/hidden vertically as the user's score changes
I was thinking score bar.. Anyone have a better name for something like that?

1:45 PM
morning
@user1803405 bar graph

`morning
Bar graph, really? Definitely another word for it, but it's basically one bar, where the light up portion goes higher based on score. I normally think of a bar graph as multiple bars, at a static height, for the purpose of comparing one to the other.

well its a form of measurement.
what are you trying to do?

write an intelligent sounding status report for my boss on a project
already sent it in, just went with score bar.

2:03 PM
@user1803405 I agree with Matt, bar graph

@JohnB sup john
wow. someone burried a shell in Texas O_o: news.yahoo.com/video/…

Hello there mateys

sup D!
happy friday

Uh oh..
I've lost a day somewhere..
I thought it was Thursday
both a good thing and a worrying thing :/

here.. its Friday =)

2:12 PM
same here just not in my head..

the head is a dangerous place

oh yh didn't work Monday..
that'll do it

lol

So used to the 5 day a week routine
I measure the weekday by how many days I've worked lol

must be nice Id be finished on the third day!
I have a question but I dont know if it fits here
Does the direction of a bird design (looking right or left) have a meaning?

2:20 PM
the direction does have implications
for sure
I doubt anybody could definitively describe what the implications are though

think I should ask the question on GD?

I really don't know, maybe if you word it heavily towards design

ya ill do it this weekend
dont have time for it right now

probably best to get an opinion off of John, Scott and Yisela

I call the power of @JohnB

2:35 PM
uhhhh
probably off topic, can't think of any site that it would fit though

3:04 PM
you know that frustrated feeling where you convince yourself "god dammit, I could run this company so much better"

@JohnB or.. start your own business ;)

I'm not quite there yet

you get there let me know =)

I'm sorta there. But not a full time company
side job

I have to say I like a lot of Adam's answers. He will play a good role here. Nice to have more people here that know some things

3:07 PM
and he flagged his own question as a duplicate!
a SE martyr

@JohnB O_O

Q: How to create a decreasing stippling or halftone effect?

AdamSchuldFor lack of a better name, I'm trying to create a decreasing stippling effect like this: My first inclination was that this could be created in Photoshop with some sort of filter effect. I was thinking along the lines of creating a smart object, applying a filter effect, then using a gradient o...

that one

ha Im actually reading that
I want to experiment with halftones more in screen printing.
and yes I am the one who marked it as favorite so I can go back and read it

I've been meaning to get Phantasm

never heard of it

3:10 PM
if I get serious with the screen printing I will

be back gotta reboot

3:22 PM
so yesterday I asked Joonas if he had any ideas on what I could build with some domains and I got the third degree I own too many, lol

Hello!

sup appu

Was a hectic work in office and now home. what's up with you

battling a server not working right now

I love the movie which your pic belongs to :)

3:26 PM
UP

Yeah. Great movie
server? What do you do? I mean what have you been up to lately?
Okay. So are you working as an Admin?
;)
ahh.. If I go to other rooms in SO, it shows the other rooms in the right side that I am in, but seems if I go to other stack sites rooms, those don't show up.

4:09 PM
@Appu SO chat and SE chat are a bit fragmented
I don't know why, but they are

hey john is area 51 down or you ever hear what happened?

@Matt_2.0 they fixed it, someone rolled out a change that broke a few things then reverted it

whoops... guess no one does beta testing anymore

4:44 PM
@JohnB Okay.

I just got a CD with an .ai template for practically every vehicle ever made. Shweet

nice.
to keep?

To borrow, copy and return :)

Jeep Wrangler in there?

Might be, I'll have a look when I get home

4:48 PM
.eps true to scale?

2.66 GB so its got a fair few

from where?

Could do, after I've copied it. For legal purposes I state that I won't..
Its called spandex

link?

4:50 PM
well that was something different than expected

'Vehicle outline DVD'
Lol!

oh I know what those are.
got skype?

that's a 3D modeller's dream

Ive got some.. think I filled a 250gb external with them

4:53 PM
I have but I'm on the bus atm
Weird that its just a DVD with templates though, nothing to install

most of em are that way now. Some do a site membership now

Its supposed to be quite expensive to
Dunno how much

last one i saw was around a grand

Wow I was thinking a few hundred
Better not lose it!

Word may have just ruined my project
I may cry

4:57 PM
ya but it was a site membership that udpated you for two years on car releases
@JohnB sorry man
what you do?

was saving and closing

Oof, you must be able to revert!?

Ive always learned to save by day with 13-08-02_ before anything

it's trying to do that recovery thing

4:59 PM
every new day I do this to revert back at some point for what I did

Well, it was my intent to convert it to InDesign anyway. Extra motivation now

Opening it in notepad sometimes shows the text all messed up at least..

I do have it saved as a PDF so it's not that huge of a deal, but still.....47 pages

But still recoverable

arg

5:00 PM
Can convert back to word from PDF?

I'd rather just use InDesign now. I had started to convert, but then crunch time came and I had to shelve that

InDesign is no angel though
Backwards compatibility sucks!

i hate when someone sends you an .indd file with no source files

The one awesome thing about Word for this is linking spreadsheets. There's a loooot of tables in this, and I haven't figured out a nice solution for that

"OpenOffice" he muttered weakly..

5:04 PM
hahh
luckily this happened after I needed to print out 4 copies
(for a meeting today)

"Should have saved", he said hypocritically..
I never save when I should

It corrupted while saving!
Although if the meeting goes as planned, I'll never have to look at this again. I am not optimistic about that though

I always thought that was almost impossible
Because AI goes unresponsive when I save and it always worries me

It has happened to be before. If Word freezes while saving, say goodbye to your document.

So I just tell myself its impossible to die while saving

5:09 PM
Oh yeah, I know that feeling too. omg, please wake back up. pleaaase wake back up. don't do this to me!

What about auto recover?

Tried that, didn't work

"Don't do this to me" - possibly my favourite thing to say to Adobe programs

I'm alright, I've got it in PDF. just gotta copy and paste lots of text into InDesign basically, and make some nice tables
I had the weirdest error this morning while printing it directly from word.....some of the images printed out upside down
and not all of them. They were oriented correctly in the file

Yh at least its still there
That is ridiculous lol

@JohnB . . . no comment

(in this case)

@JohnB cant you just import it into indesign?
@JohnB thats your printer angry

probably, but I'd like to tweak some things
the printers are against me today, the one in my office is of course not responding to anything I send it
despite me being able to ping it

I was getting hungry but after seeing this question now its official

Q: Identify these fonts used on receipts

Mathew FoscariniCan someone please help me identify the fonts used in these two receipts. I'm looking for downloadable free fonts that I can use to reproduce the same looking results. The two receipts used different fonts. I'll offer a bounty of 100 points as soon as I can.

graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/20011/… This question's not perfect, but it sounds as legitimate as most of the questions we get on gd. Especially for the website design tag
The user should upload the image into his question, but I still don't think it should've been put on hold. It sounds very much like he purchased an icon sprite image and wants to know how to implement it
Also, jpegs don't have layers.. Really shouldn't be moderating anything tagged website design if you're not aware of this.

@user1803405 you can edit it to add clarification and nominate it for re-opening
I stand by my judgement of putting it on hold, it's a bad question as it stands
The whole point of "on hold" is to give the user a chance to improve their question. I gave multiple suggestions in the comments on how to add clarity

6:13 PM
sushi =)

nice

@user1803405 this is a workflow issue and not a design issue. Best way I understand it, is the questioner bought a stock image and doesnt know how to use it
I do also agree it is unclear and if the question is better asked it could stay
@JohnB can my comment stay?

Haha, I usually don't delete joke comments
Usually I'll delete comments that are asking for clarification if the user provides it, or useless banter that doesn't go anywhere
(although you spelled buy wrong)

did I really?
corrected (facepalm)

it's Friday

6:23 PM
ya and work issues going crazy =/

gotta get down on Fry Day
Fry Day.. Fry Day.. Fry Day..

sup @iKlsR

Up @Matt_2.0

you are making me hungry

o.O

6:24 PM
so I shouldnt tell you about the hot cheese from Boarshead?

french fries? idk

@Matt_2.0 But if we can ask questions about print production, why are questions regarding implementing your web design restricted?

It's closed because it's unclear, not because it's off-topic

@Matt_2.0 Though, I'd have to admit the question, and answer for what I'm 95% sure is asking, would likely be better for stack overflow

@user1803405 they arent restricted. In this case there is no set Question that can be answered an exact way. The purpose for questions is to try and ask a blunt question that could help later on. Granted I do battle this because I like to increase our questions but in this case the question is unclear.

6:26 PM
The question's asking how to implement a sprite.

@user1803405 but we dont know that exactly because he didnt say sprite

@user1803405 That wasn't my interpretation, I thought he was asking how to crop :S
see? unclear!

the way I look at it is he asking a layer question or a production question

He's definitely asserting that he might need to crop, but the question's regarding how to implement image sprites. eg. autreplanete.com/web-icons/img/icons_free.png
there are no layers involved
it's a web design question, which is likely why it seems unclear to you

@user1803405 I don't agree with that, purely based on the fact that he mentions artboards.

6:28 PM
@JohnB I agree here

he mentioned artboards because he tried to sepparate the icons in illustrator

@user1803405 I'm not saying "I'm right you're wrong", but you're re-enforcing the face that it's unclear. We have three people that can't figure out what he is asking.
I would recommend posting the sprite suggestion in a comment, perhaps that will help

Are any of you web designers?

lol.

yes

6:31 PM
And you didn't understand that jpegs don't have layers?

What are you asserting? That we don't know what sprite sheets are?

when I read it, it appears that he said I have .ai and .ps files

It seems clear to me that he is asking how to implement a sprite sheet, and it seemed by your comments to the question, you don't or didn't know what a sprite sheet was

my apologies. I do have a bad habit of scheming the article.

I know what a sprite sheet is, and I never thought even the slightest that he was trying to make a sprite sheet

6:32 PM
plus we already have a sprite question
we could add it as a comment

In my opinion (and I'm making huge assumptions here), sprite sheet is not the way to go

The question's not great, but it just seems like it was hastily put on hold and misinterpreted by the first couple of people.

he's got 20 icons from a stock photo website and he's going to use them all?
no way jose

I'm assuming the guy's a hobbiest or small business owner with a do it yourself kind of website

I was trapped by this comment "I have .AI & .PSD. Tried making icons a vector in Illustrator,"

6:36 PM
I'm assuming: Do it yourself hobbiest/sm biz owner purchased a pack of icons for his site, in the form of a sprite sheet, didn't know what it was, mentioned ps and ai because he owns those tools and knows they're for some sort of image editing

could be

I'll admit, not the perfect quality question, or really the demographic you want to take time to explain things to step by step, but seemed like it was at least a legitimate question to add some more content to the website design tag, which we don't seem to have a ton of activity on
if it's a duplicate too, that's its own issue it ought to be flagged for

Ive asked for website critiques but have gotten no where. I think that would bring a lot of traffic.
SO gets asked code questions and how to improve them so i dont see why we cant ask them here.

It would be useful, but all the stack exchange sites seem to be real strict about no critiques unless you have a specific question

@user1803405 I think Writers allows them

6:41 PM
I agree to that and understand. Its a battle really. I think it would help but an open closed question on "how can I make this better" is not preferred

You can probably claim X code is better than Y code, because it can boil down to how much is required, clarity, and how heavy it actually is in terms of computing
Do we allow critiques? Could've sworn we didn't, but that may have been UX

they sneak by sometimes. It's difficult to make them work with the SE format

dont we have an autosave version feature question here?

mmmmmmmmmmyes I think I have seen one
damn
those look awesome

usually 4 chances?

huh

10001, 1002, 1003, 1004

I mean I wonder why 1004 is the #6 most used PIN
all the others in the top 10 have some sort of pattern

7:06 PM
Maybe these are the most common stolen PINs, that would make seens of the 1001, 1002, 1003 strategy
then again, 1001, 1002 aren't there..

@user1803405 are you a web designer?

> Many people also asked the significance of 1004 in the four character PIN table. This comes from Korean speakers. When spoken, "1004" is cheonsa (cheon = 1000, sa=4).
From the linked article: datagenetics.com/blog/september32012

Im just glab my pin 9999 isnt on there

Q: What is the best way to review static mobile mockups?

plainclothesThis question is in regards to mobile site layouts but could just as easily apply to apps. always wondered how they test. Surely they dont own every device

he owns every device?!?!?!?!

just for that reason, or so he says
yeah I think he has like 100 phones

mintI have some tabular data I'm displaying to users. It's not a lot of data, but I'm wondering if there is a more legible way to display it? Right now the data looks like this: Is there a better way to present this data or does this seem pretty clear / legible?

really?!?!

example of a critique question that works for SE

that info is legit

Brendan loves font questions

?

7:34 PM

A: Identify these fonts used on receipts

BrendanLike DA01 says, finding an exact match isn't happening. The font in the receipt is a monospaced sans serif, so if you pick one that's close you could rough it up a bit to make it feel right: Monaco, DejaVu Sans Mono, OCR-A, and OCR-B. You'd probably have to rough it up a bit to make it feel more...

He usually pops up when there's a font question
