@Anaphory Do what computers do - express all times in UTC, and calculate your local time from that

1 hour later…
1:36 AM
hey there @Quentin

1:54 AM
... that moment when you realize you're over a thousand messages behind in chat, then give up and skim.
@Anaphory Never played Microscope, but this reminds me of the awesome game 1000 blank white cards

hey there @JoelHarmon, how're things going?

RP wise, pretty crazy

@JoelHarmon how so?

@JoelHarmon That's what the stars are for.

Sunday was my first go at Great Ork Gods; yesterday was a trial run on 7th Sea 2nd ed; tomorrow is another game of Great Ork Gods

1:56 AM
Shiny!
@Shalvenay Do you think Great Ork Gods would be a thing to try with VI?

@BESW I'm not sure -- thematically, the game would be rather...off kilter for me.

Honestly, I think it'd be good to put you off kilter in an environment where we can talk about why that's so and what it means and how to react to it.

@Shalvenay the whole thing of your character dying?

@BESW I'm aware of the stars, but I also think it's valuable to skim anyway; you had an interesting conversation on the nature of identity that I'd have entirely missed if I stuck with just the zingers that are stars

@JoelHarmon True, I'm not sure why nothing there got starred.

1:59 AM
@trogdor less that and more the overall theme of the game

(or most likely dying anyway)

@trogdor Nah, it's more about how the point of being Orks is to do silly things in an inefficient manner.

ah ok

maybe it was the players/DM, but my Orks ended up mostly very violent, rather than just stupid
though there was a sign post that ended hilariously

Oh yeah. Orks are deeply violent.
The game works because they're acceptable targets.

2:01 AM
personally, I appreciated the very small amount of work it takes to make an Ork, and the emphasis on how unimportant it is if your Ork dies, but how actually cool it is if they do awesome things and survive afterwards

@BESW yeah, and the only way orcish folk become acceptable targets to me is by making themselves into acceptable targets through behavior

@Shalvenay Right, and that's what the game is about.
In our first session the whole motive of the Orks was "Those gnomes are singing and we don't like singing, so let's go raid their camp."
Orks don't even care about other Orks.

I think they were Halflings actually

You may be right.

not that it matters much
I still fondly remember how my very first Ork died immediately upon the first action he tried to take

2:05 AM
Little happy singing folk with too many bright colours.

the plot hook for the Sunday game was "I'm not entirely convinced the gods are pleased with us, so we should go find an elf temple to destroy. I think there's one that way."

it got me into the swing of the game

that was followed up with "Why aren't you running yet? Are you some kind of coward??"
@trogdor yeah, the example story has the first thing be a roll against death

Yeah, Troggy's first Ork charged down a hill, hit a gopher hole, cartwheeled into a rock head-first, and his corpse tumbled the rest of the way down.

@BESW hrm. still kinda on the edge about it

2:09 AM
my players ended up tying corpses together with swords sticking out, intending to roll it down a hill
that ended up containing three orks and a few goblins
more allies than enemies, really
I felt curiously powerless to stop them, actually
and the spite mechanic was really interesting

hey there @KorvinStarmast

2:28 AM
@BESW I mean -- it sounds kinda fun, but kinda almost too senseless at the same time

@Shalvenay Hello, I am browsing Aviation.SE, it's an interesting site. How are things with you?

@KorvinStarmast alright here, would be better if not for a dead PC sitting over in the family office :P (SATA controller on the motherboard went kablooie)

@Shalvenay Ouch. So far, knock on wood, my years old Sager is doing nicely. Wife uses an Ipad, not a PC ... Thank Goodness. She's not a tech person.

@KorvinStarmast ah. I have parts to get it fixed/upgraded on the way

@Shalvenay Pronunciation question on your handle. Accent in first, second, or third syllable?

2:35 AM
@KorvinStarmast first is how I pronounce it

@Shalvenay And now I shall also, I had it wrong using second ... too many years of spanish class.

no worries laughs it's a product of my built-in random-name-gen

@Shalvenay Mine's the first dead character in 5e D&D. RIP, Korvin, thine immortality is only in the internet.

@KorvinStarmast ah. who/what was he, and how'd he get toasted?

@Shalvenay We got surrounded and our dwarf paladin could not hit anything. I ended up, as he did, as ogre dung. The rest fled with 1 HP or so. The two of us re rolled.

2:46 AM
@KorvinStarmast ah. who/what was your char?

Life cleric. Nite, momma calls.

seems quiet here

7:50 AM
Sometimes is.
But compared to other se chats I'm in, it's really lively!
@JoelHarmon Apart from using the same material, it is so much completely different. Both are awesome.

Generally, if it's quiet, the way to liven things up is just to start talking.

talking

There's often a lot of people lurking who'll join in if a conversation is going on but don't initiate things.

so guys, im soon thinking of hosting a warrior rogue and mage one shot

@Adeptus That's my instinct, but I like to be user-friendly. Although I think we should generally have one, maybe 2 time zones: UTC – and UTC+12, so no-one has to have the date change in the middle of the day.

7:57 AM
all the playable characters are summoners of some type

@user507974 I haven't seen this before, but it appears to be free, so I'ma check it out.

@Miniman its like a 40 page player manual

@user507974 Not to put too fine a point on it, I read this sort of thing for fun.
Ever since I was a kid and found a Warhammer sourcebook lying around my cousin's place.

the WHOLE player manual
the way my friend who had us play this before had us do it was that he made several premade "classes" and since you die pretty easily we just cycle through them
i bet theres some way for people not to die easily so that it can be used for more than one shots

@user507974 Is that in the book, where I don't see it, or your restriction/seed?

8:03 AM
@Anaphory seed
basically its kind of an excuse to see a crazy clusterfuck of summoning and what results from it

Yay!
Need to go to work, see you later!

@Anaphory adios

Q: What is the site's policy on cross-tag possible duplicate questions?

daze413I'm asking because of this question: How do I depower Magic items that are op without ruining the immersion tagged: dnd-5e magic-items With the help of Miniman, we commented a related question: What can I do when I accidentally gave out an overpowered item? tagged: pathfindergm-techniques magic-...

1 hour later…
11:39 AM
@Anaphory I love Blank because I've never found another game that supported creative counter-cards, magic the gathering/starcraft mashups, and "go get me some cookies and milk" at all, much less well.
then again, your mileage may vary

12:37 PM
@Miniman How do you think answer #5 from this sage advice informs our recent discussion, Miniman?

1:05 PM
@nitsua60 Sounds like you were right the first time, before I pointed out the ambiguity and confused you!

1:32 PM
Over the next week and a half I'll be working in the Spoil-Lair to design a one-shot aspect-only FAE adventure to introduce Fate in a voice-only game with a "Juvenile Fantasy Fiction" theme.
2
Anyone who wants to help and/or point and laugh is welcome.

1:59 PM
@Miniman But you were certainly right about the ambiguity being there, as evidenced by the need for a SA entry. ("an SA entry?" "ah SA entry"?)

2:19 PM
sigh getting to downvote and comment on Q&As for D&Dnext playtest questions
that people are answering with 5e release references
and the question title and body both specify D&D next

@JoshuaAslanSmith yet it's tagged 5e--did they get tag-synonymized at some point?

@nitsua60 I recall that happening.

I guess I'm wondering: if you would want an answer that only relies on playtest material and would not allow 5e material, perhaps that synonym needs to be de-linked?

So perhaps synonymizing served a purpose during a "transition time" when people were looking to figure out 5e but "next" was still on their lips, but now it's actually causing a problem?
@Miniman yup--thanks.

2:28 PM
@nitsua60 Yep, that's what I think/believe to remember as well.

@nitsua60 It did
There was a meta about it and the consensous was " people will know questions are specifically about the playtest based on time/D&Dnext being name dropped" and general system questions from then should be updated if they do not reference D&Dnext specifically
9
Q: How should we tag the "next" edition of D&D?

Brian Ballsun-StantonApparently dnd-next was the working name of the project. All of the branding simply shows it as "D&D": " while there are some open questions still, this is concrete news that Dungeons & Dragons (no longer Next, or even 5e, just Dungeons & Dragons) is coming soon." ... So do we tag it as 5e, o...

2:51 PM
@nitsua60 i would write "an SA" if i fully expect people to mentally read it as "an ess-ay", "a SA" if i fully expect people to read out what it stands for (or say "sah").
@JoshuaAslanSmith i don't recall all of that discussion; i recall being a fan of keeping the D&D Next questions visibly tagged [dnd-next-playtest] or something and only having questions about the finalised D&D 5e questions using the D&D 5e tag. ultimately i think it was reasoned that the playtest questions ought to be corrected to be up-to-date with the final D&D 5e material, whenever it arrived.
might be worth a meta in itself to see what to do now with questions that explicitly state they're about the D&D Next playtest

3:15 PM
Aren't answers supposed to be sorted accepted and then descending order of votes? Because to me, order currently looks very random, did I mess up an option somewhere?

Check which sorting option you've got.

@Anaphory There's a few sort options.

@BESW Ah, cheers. It was on “active”, for some reason.

3:34 PM
@BESW @trogdor I have a new laptop. It is not total garbage to use. The airbnb place I'm at has wifi. I can rejoin our games. :)
.... though I still need a microphone-equipped headset. 'til then you might hear my flatmate from time to time.

2 hours later…
5:57 PM
@doppelgreener Neither was I, I wanted to keep a separate tag. Maybe i will write up a meta as you suggest.

6:40 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I certainly think it'd be worth re-discussing.

7:15 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I know for sure there would be questions only relevant to the playtest

yo doppel

8:21 PM
ever played warrior rogue and mage

@user507974 you may want to be more specific about which context you're asking that in
oh, apparently that's a lightweight TTRPG
(i was very confused because those weren't even the names of D&D classes)
but no, as you can probably guess, i haven't!

8:42 PM
@doppelgreener Yey!
We'll probably either finish up that Bubblegumshoe adventure, or try out Lovecraftesque.

@doppelgreener yea
sounds like the perfect one shot tabletop engine
ive played with a friend once so far to good effect
literally 40 page long player manual, only 20 pages is really needed to establish the base underpinnings of the game

sounds fun, the D&D-like genre could always do with (more?) one-shot systems :)

@doppelgreener I downloaded a couple of free ones off DTRPG earlier this week, haven't had time to read them yet.
(I went on a free RPG binge and downloaded, like, 60 items.)

@user507974 i can believe that 40 page thing. I've recently been playing games with BESW's gaming group that have single-digit numbers of pages. one of my favourites is lasers and feelings, which is one A4 page

8:52 PM
@doppelgreener hmm

@BESW oh, really? let me know if they seem like fun!

@BESW oh ohoh, a summoners compendium
you gave me what I needed without me even asking for it

@doppelgreener Earlier this week I ran a Roll For Shoes game with VI, who'd only ever played a few sessions of Dungeon World prior, and the implied variety in the RPG landscape blew her mind.

im going to do a one shot WRM where every character option is some kind of summoner

@BESW oh man, that's fantastic

8:56 PM
@doppelgreener So now we're alternating DW and an "RPG tour" every other week.

i saw that! i think that's a great idea
i think also the monitor on this laptop i bought is awful :D

I want to help her explore what RPGs can be, within the context of looking for games that fit her needs both in terms of playstyle and what works for her situation.
Aw.

i got this idea when i was playing a pirate mage and i tried to summon a chimera, but instead summoned a reverse chimera

what, pray tell, is a reverse chimera?
@BESW VI's going to get a lot of benefit out of the mechanic whereby things that exist are aspects

@doppelgreener Yes. She also really likes the flexibility implied in phrasal mechanics.

9:00 PM
so...the body of massive snake, head of a lion, with the tiny stubby legs of a regular sized goat
all it could do was languish around in pain in the middle of a town

that sounds like a terrible condition of existence

flopping like a fish out of water
yea, it was begging me to end its existence

"alas, poor reverse chimera; it died as it lived: horribly"

but so i thought why not expand that to a world full of people who can do things like that

sounds messy
i would not like to be a janitor in that game world, with people always summoning weird or ineffectual monsters :D

9:27 PM
well i created a special class of summons i refer to as errants that are particularly effective... cleaners if you will

If someone releases a free pdf of a creative work, do they still have the copyright and therefore the exclusive right to distribute that work?

@Miniman They retain whatever rights they didn't explicitly grant.

@BESW That's what I thought, thanks.

"Free" is their chosen distribution method, not a relinquishment of control.

9:44 PM
That's a nice way to put it, ok if I quote you?

Sure, for what it's worth.

I didn't mean as an authoritative source, just stealing your wording.

Ok no time to ask properly now, but this guy is telling me that incantatrixes can't persiste spells they cast on themselves because they need to be adjacent or inside the spell effect they want to modify.
What do I say?

I'd lead with "Where does it say that?"
Ah, I see.

10:27 PM
I return to inflict my terror upon this realm once more.

@doppelgreener mk. sounds great :)

@GuidingLight Now that I actually played some Megaman games, I recognise the truth of that.

Q: Pathfinder Double-Chained, Kama

PaladinWarriorThe Double-Chained Kama says the following: The wielder can attack as if armed with a single kama in each hand or extend the chain to make a single reach attack. By swinging the rope, the wielder can whip the kama about to disarm or trip opponents. Furthermore, if one of the weapons is dropp...

Does this need to be separate questions?
or is it fine as-is

It's all relating to the single confusing mechanic, not "and what if I make it elysium steel?".

sounds good
