been trying to seek out RP venues that might be more tolerant of my playstyle, btw -- but don't really know where to look either, and also testing a D&D 3.5 dungeon off and on
Hrm. Do you need the simulation to be rules supported, or does group supported work? (My FATE games are pretty simulation heavy, consequences of playing with physics majors)
Huh. The more I think about it, the more I realize most PvP games aren't very simulationist. Though I'd be curious if you ever played Amber. (Short of Paranoia, Amber's the most PvP game that comes to mind.)
Throw a slingstone to get the PCs attention, run down a dungeon hallway spreading the fat behind them, wait until the PCs get over the grease, light it on fire. Then block both entrances with tower shields.
@IgneusJotunn -- if you're set up on roll20, we'll have to see about setting up a time for you to take a stab at my test dungeon, if you feel like dungeon testing that is :)
when would be a good time for you? I may have some time later tonight -- it depends on how soon my Sat. night 2e game wraps and how long it takes you to get the prelims out of the way
rulebooks are any, save for the ToM truenamer due to its extreme dysfunction (use The Way Words Work instead) . level is midlevel (anywhere from 5-10 for a solo as the toughest encounter is CR4, and monsters are scarce). houserules are minimal (I'm not the most familiar with 3.5e RAW though, so weird rules from weird books might trip me up though)
also, since you'll likely be going solo, take a skillmonkey or caster class vs. a pure fighter/barbarian/monk -- the dungeon in question is very environment-hazard-heavy
(unless you have friends you wish to bring; if you want to bring a couple friends of yours with you on Tuesday, feel free to :)
go right ahead -- as to doing the dungeon with a party -- level 3-5 is fine for party chars, and you'll want at least one rogue and/or at least one caster in the group; also, stay away from barbarians, or any character that may dump DEX
The precise use case is: Imagine a mansion in the colonies, commandeered by the British East India Company or something. If they hold some kind of festivities there, officers inviting friends and all those other people you have to invite, what music would be played. And since it's not just 1849, but 1849-based steam punk, I have even less ideas.
As I understand it, the point of parlour music is to be simple enough for anyone to play, and also upbeat but not too distracting or overpowering to drown out conversation.
In this case, the “simple enough for anyone to play” criterion can be reduced, and it can be more than just piano anyway (and my classic concept of steam punk instruments are electrical strings)
It's hard to really nail down much, but I'm having the most success by taking items from the list of mediant-octave mode examples here and running them through the Google video search with phrases like "electric string" attached.
When you find something you like that way, you can look for more by that artist or in that genre or with that piece.
For example, if you like the Texas Electric String Band I linked above, see if they've done anything else you'll like.
