Honestly, the question's poorly defined and would have done better as two.
One question about the GM's role in character behavior and alignment changes, and one about appropriate in-game responses to divine characters acting in defiance of their god's agenda.
Conflating GM response with game-world response is classic 3.5 doublethink which doesn't have much place in 4e.

@Pulsehead "after removing the cloak (for 24 hours?)" - it would make a more solid connection to let them rest easier the first night, and easier still the next, like a weight is lifting off them, etc. (Imagine someone giving up the mini-ring)
@LitheOhm hats!1

By better I mean more fun

@GMNoob It is definitely more fun to make your player deal with mortal agents than punish them from a god on high they can do little to nothing about that is clearly you just going: "Stop doing that"

I'd rather give my players a face for their characters to argue with and try to justify their choices.

Punished by a god, unless done very well, comes with little character development. Pursued by an order or assassins is, almost without effort, development of character.

3:05 PM
Most of my players would find that "more fun."

^ that too

@JonathanHobbs I'm just thinking of all the times in the D&D books that I have read about gods interacting with mortals, while the mortals retained their free will.

I have a fancy hat, he is a cat, we know our bsns

But I've had characters and situations where a divine banhammer was a lot of fun and very appropriate.

@GMNoob Which D&D books were they?
If they're pre-4e books, 4e took a very different approach to gods.

3:06 PM
Drizt ones

@GMNoob Yeah, not 4e.
For example, the thief who robbed the tomb of a king dedicated to the god of thieves. He was stricken with a curse that made him supernaturally good at thievery, but increasingly awful at everything else. He could throw the curse off on his own relatively easily... but I engineered the curse so it'd be an awful temptation not to.

I've only read the essentials books, and I didn't notice any large shift in Deities

There are a lot of differences.

@JonathanHobbs Very different definition of character development than me. :) I call that gaining XP, not charachter development.

They may not be very obvious because of one of those differences: gods don't mess around with mortals as directly anymore, so they don't get talked about as much.
4e gods are basically the firstborn of the multiverse. They don't get power from worship.

3:11 PM
Unless you are a warlock .

4e gods are also expected to be fought.

@GMNoob it's not putting the assassins in combat that is the development. It's using that to help build that character's story. Think in a storytelling sense: moving from a pious cleric to one tempted by evil and hunted by their order, how is that not character development?
(I dunno if it's a cleric but w/e)

While earlier D&D editions would eventually stat up gods, they weren't done so with the expectation that gods would be regular bosses. 4e expects you to cap a level 30 campaign with a god-level battle.

@JonathanHobbs Pious cleric being templed by evil is charachter development. Being hunted by the order, not so much.

mornin

3:13 PM
@GMNoob Being hunted by the order is a catalyst for how the character responds to that in their development.

@BESW I'm pretty sure there was a TSR module where you fought Lloth

@GMNoob It happens, but it's not a default.
In 4e, the gods are in a constant state of détente.

@JonathanHobbs AKA, killing off the assasins and otherwise ignoring them :P

If Pelor drops into the world to use his powers, Vecna gets to also.

@GMNoob That would be you otherwise ignoring them, so it's up to you how you use them.

3:14 PM
They use their followers --especially the divine classes-- as chess pieces instead. This makes players more important.
If the gods can intervene whenever they like, the players only get to do things for their gods when the gods let them, and they only achieve victories against the evil gods when the evil gods let them.
Part of what makes this work is that once a god grants you access to his power so you can cast divine spells, he can't take that away.
The PC cleric who prays for Pelor to send help in the fight against a vampire has missed the point: that cleric is the help Pelor sent.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a table issue, and not a game system issue. Otherwise, Clerics are Mages
And I'm pretty sure, that even in 4e the idea was that the cleric has faith in what he is doing. So if he deludes himself, he gets the powers, even if Pelor doesn't support him, because the power comes from his faith, and not from Pelor.

@GMNoob Right. And in a world where this is true, a cleric who turns away from from his god is an awful thing, not just a traitor and a betrayer of trust, but he has let down all the people he'd been chosen to aid--and he's now able to turn that granted power against his order and his god.

@JonathanHobbs It's not me doing anything. The assassins attack. That is all that happens. It could lead to many things, the least obvious of which is some sort of introspection. In the real world, when organizations go against members, those members tend to see themselves as the true version of the organization, and label the attackers as heretics of some kind.

A 3.5 cleric who defies his god becomes impotent. He was never a free agent, he only had power so long as he did what his god wanted. When he deviates, he ceases to have any agency.

That's not true.

3:23 PM
@GMNoob Ok, but consider this from a different perspective. I'm going to assume you've seen a thriller story before, or anything spooky.
Those stories often involve you almost never seeing the actual threat. The mere promise the threat was present, somewhere, somehow, was scary on its own.
You don't have to throw the assassins at your character. Heck, you could throw a couple at them just to let them know they're being hunted: then they know they are, and then never show them another one for ages. But spook them out, and poke them mentally to jump at shadows (whether metaphorically or literally)
You even have the option of just having someone deliver a message that assassins have been dispatched, and then never show them any assassins at all. Have people act strangely. Give them reason to think their tea is poisoned, and so on.
You probably would make them face someone eventually, and then more people after that, quite possibly, but I'm just talking about this to show what I mean.

I'm not seeing it.

Context: 4e is a tactical combat game.
If you're playing 4e, tactical combat is what you're there for.

What I am seeing, is making a single charachter the focus of all the DM's efforts, just to avoid divine agency.

Thus, major story elements are expressed via tactical combat.

A simple divine message, saying "You have strayed", should be enough.

3:28 PM
I'm not sure how to put this then, because that's not what I'm saying.

"Avoiding divine agency" is not the point of this.

(i'm certainly not saying spend 100% of your focus and effort on one player)

And I'd sort of assume the GM is putting effort into addressing the character arcs of all his players.

got to run to some meetings

Hey @BESW

3:31 PM
Hey.

What's the fastest way to find the name of a font?

As in, you have a font in front of you and you want to find out its name?

exactly

Is font recognition a legit question on graphic design, here on SE?

3:35 PM
Yes.

0
Q: What's the font in this logo?

ZachielI need to get the name of the font used in the penrose triangle logo in this site I did: https://sites.google.com/site/utopiaerre/ The guy who did the logo just took an existing image of the "UTOPIA" writing and slanted it to fit the cubes, so he doesn't know which font it is. I'm pretty sure ...

It's not some obscure font so I guess there will be people recognizing it.
I've tried those three sites first, of course

I suggest including a screenshot.

I tried linking to the image but when the link is clicked it goes to a page wher google asks you to download it
I guess I'll upload it on imgur

4:01 PM
hats
how is everyone this morning

Sleepy.
Trying to stay awake so I don't fall off my ball.

gotcha
I want the bounty hunter hat soooo bad

dammit, staring your message doesn't get me a hat for another 4 days

What?

4:09 PM
if you star a chat comment on dec 20th youll get the winter is coming hat (see my link)
also look at my icon for an example hat, got that for being on SE on the 5th

"All cast votes on a day are upvotes."
Also, apparently I have a hat.

I have a cat.

@BESW Seems like it is. Otherwise the default response would be. Give the player a dream where they feel anger from their divine patron. Rather than, make them think some group of thugs are after them.
And now I know why Roll20.net was down for me when I tried to use it...

4:39 PM
@GMNoob that is an excellent update post
I love roll20 but thats a bigger reason to use it

4:51 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith is there some system to share or borrow maps from other roll20 campaigns?

5:01 PM
sort of
if someone uploads something they can check it off as public (this is from foggy memory) there are already assets in the built in search engine from within roll20 and it lists those first before google hits

5:14 PM
Such a shame. Especially with popular modules

I think the reason they dont have it completely like that is copyright litagation
roll20 is great put they probably don't have the money to get sued for unlawful distribution if someone started distributing WOTC or PAIZO stuff using their site

Still it's a real shame
so much wasted duplicated efforts...

5:30 PM
@GMNoob from a top down perspective maybe, but doing work within a system teaches you competency within said system

5:41 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith LOL, if I wanted to buy a Map making tool, I would buy a mapmaking tool. But roll20 is about getting you into the game faster, or so their website says :)

True, but I mean some of these new features and even some of the core, but optional features (dice macros w/ buttons) take a little bit of learning and an increased proficiency can be a benefit. I know everyone wants everything NOW, but I still think learning through doing has its place too.

Sure, learn through using the program. That's great. But could you imagine if every OS demanded that you build your own Calculator program to have a calculator running on your computer?
I'm sure as more people donate, they will add full pages to the marketplace, and not just images and tokens.

6:13 PM
Good point, but you'd also have a much more knowledgeable user base, though yes it would be much smaller.

Haaaaaats.

@metool hats, hats, hats, hats, hats, hats, hats, hats, hats, hats, hats, hats, EVERYBODY

Whats up with the hats?

you should see the snowflake symbol on the rpg.se main site (or any se site) at the top next to your inbox and stats symbols in the blackbar

6:29 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith [bumps hats]

6:43 PM
wax spills

Hmm I need something clever for the 2 starred chat messages
It's slow at work today. How is everyone else's day going?

Really curious about this Chuck Yeager hat...

good, like I said someone needs to post a question w/ a bounty and give it to me I NEED THE BOBAFETT HAT

I don't have the rep to post a question with a bounty

6:58 PM
I mean the hats are across all sites so I could skadoodle over to sci-fi or something

Is there a minimum bounty?

Perhaps the hat involves being quick to post an answer right after the question shows up? Or perhaps the first to answer?

@metool its like really low maybe like 10 I think

@Metool The answer's in the FAQ, because I know I've read it. I want to say the min. is 50.

I mean I thought about posting a question and answering said question myself and then giving myself said bounty (not sure about the last part) and getting 2 hats, but that also seems subversive to what we actually want at rpg.se
Ive got a slight issue with the badges and whatnot because I feel the encourage achievement seeking rather than simply being a reward for doing good like rep is.

7:05 PM
Hey. Hey @JoshuaAslanSmith

@metool What? Its bad impulse, but one I wont act on

@JoshuaAslanSmith Yeah, I'd imagine the mods would nuke that from orbit.

7:53 PM
@Metool This sentence makes my brain hurt.

Ah, so it's not just me.

indeed
so am I crazy or does no one else know what gishy means
I thought he meant squishy but he doesnt seem to be using the word in that way
0
Q: How to optimize a Gishy Character?

TimothyAWisemanI am quite aware that the best way to optimize a Gishy Character in 4E is to not do it an instead focus on a clearly Tier One Type like a Druid, Cleric, or Wizard. But I have a foundness for those that can sling spell instead of blade, like Dak'kon from Planescape: Torment. So, given that, how ...

The combination of magical and martial.

8:09 PM
its weird too because there are a lot of 4e classes that I would say fit that archetype (Though they done have 2 power sources) such as bladesinger, swordmage, paladin, hexblade warlock, etc.

Gishy? Striker? You kids with your weird words.

Striker is a defined term within thebooks of 4e
IVe never ever heard gishy before

Gish is a term from 3.x charop boards, I think.

and to be fair he references plainscape torment which makes him probably 10 years older than me (26 right now)

Oooh, I never saw anything of 4e, and very, veyr little of 3.x
Plus I rarely integrate with online communities, so I never pick up the slang!
There's MTG terms I hear people use in the game store than just confuse me.

8:11 PM
lol I understand, 4e is awesomesauce if you are into tactical boardgames and rpgs with combat its basically an rpg system built around tactical combat with a lot of freedom when it comes to skills and roleplay outside of combat

Ah, that's actually the opposite of how I go in RPGs! XD

Gishy makes me think of an fish like pet that does not need to be in water. Why? I don't know.

I want as much RP as possible, with minimal... rulesy stuff.
I thought maybe Gishy was something about Geishas? I have no idea.

@ProfessorLokiCaprion I text rp when I want that lol. No rules!!!

Haha, yes! Though I do the roughly tabletop equivalent.
Tabletop rough equivalent, that is... I don't roughly tabletop. That sounds dirty.

8:13 PM
@ProfessorLokiCaprion I can't verbally express myself as well as I can writing so I do text RPing.
My Icon to the left here is my character Acheron in Chibi form XD

@Aaron I understand that, for sure, but we manage. :) One of my players actually has a pretty bad stutter, but we all get by.

@ProfessorLokiCaprion I used to stutter when I was a child. It comes back here and there.

@Aaron If it didn't take longer, I'd love to do more online RP.

@ProfessorLokiCaprion It really depends on who you find. I have done rps where we type multiple paragraphs each in the space of about 5 minutes. Then with other people who type a few sentences in 15 minutes.
@ProfessorLokiCaprion You could always do ummm. Not sure of the name but the blog like rps. You post on the forum and leave or wait and just post when you are online.

Gish is originally a githyanki warrior/wizard build that used spellcasting to buff its melee combat effectiveness.
Comes from 2e, I think Planscape?
Now it means any build that accomplishes similar goals.

8:24 PM
Man. I look stylish.
I'm not really sure I grok the point of these hats.

Fun…

also probably to drive site activity during a slow time (the holidays)

I guess. I'm just going to keep wearing this neat secret one.

Is ponies off-topic?

Not much of a secret if I am wearing it, though...

8:29 PM
@metool as @besw explained it to me. Talk about whatever you want but if someone has a question or is trying to discuss RPGs that takes precedence and other conversations should abate (or go into a seperate chatroom) until said matter is resolved

Ah, rightyo.

And be sensitive to whether someone is uncomfortable about the topic.
Politics and religion should be handled v. carefully, forex.

@besw yes, thats a great rule for existing in society writ large
oh man The One Ring:Adventures over the edge of the wild is on drivethrurpg for half off, very tempting

Speaking of sensitive topics. I'm trying to make fish sex sound appealing. Fish-people being fish-like should lay groups of eggs and then have a male come by and spray the eggs with sperm. Doesn't sound very enjoyable. Ideas?

Social prestige?

8:35 PM
@DampeS8N That. Was. Perfect timing.

@Aaron I have a sixth sense for it. thank you.

@DampeS8N Fish people being Human like could also just have normal sex and lay an egg(s).

(I'll always go back to this, if you want to make mating special, surround it with ritual)

Not all fish do it that way, but if it's the way you want to go...
Make a virtue of it.

8:39 PM
@waxeagle that's a mighty nice hat you got there.

It's a private ritual, not shared with anyone, and a prayer ceremony in which you call upon your fishy gods to ensure the right person is chosen to fertilize with.

@DampeS8N thanks who'd you manage to steal yours from :P

!

@BESW O

@BESW I have two general types of fish people to account for. Kuo-toa and Sahuagin types. Figured one should at least breed like that.

8:40 PM
Obtained 50 rep!
@DampeS8N I know Sahuagin but what are Kuo-Toa

@waxeagle No stealing. SFF.SE Mod Pro Tem.

@DampeS8N ah, didn't realize they awarded them to retirees :) (kudos to them)

@waxeagle I was pretty surprised, myself. :)

Kelpie-This hideous humanoid creature has slimy, transparent skin; webbed, humanoid hands; and a snaggle-toothed, horse-like face.
Such a cute name for an ugly beast

@Aaron basically Murlocs from Warcraft.

8:44 PM
@DampeS8N Ummm. What are Murlocs?
Lol. I'll google it.

Are they like Mudblops?

@dampes8n you could make it an impulse of necessity like hunger vs. pleasure as we would consider sex and then as a society there is a lot of social prestige/positive reinforcement for the acts

@Aaron Basically fish-people from The Slayers.

@DampeS8N I don't know what The Slayers is either. XD

@DampeS8N would they die like some fish when they did this (thinking of salmon)

8:46 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I like this. A kind of self-sacrifice for continuing the species. I can work with that...
@Aaron Basically reverse mermaids.
But seriously. Fish people in The Slayers crack me up.

@DampeS8N glad I could help your extremely ecologically/biologically sourced fantasy setting

@DampeS8N WTF
That is creepy as hell

only in japan
2

Kuo-toa are basically the fish-men of Insmouth.

@BESW In who's mouth?

8:48 PM
@BESW We need to keep this Kuo-toa are basically the ____ of _____ meme running. hehe

Dragon's.
*Dagon

Durn autocorrect.

:12683158 InnMouth of Cthulu. The resort only available in Japan.

8:50 PM
lol

Racially insane amphibians who worship Deep Gods of blood and madness.

Just on the off chance that someone thought the above picture was a fluke in the show, or out of context.

@DampeS8N Damn you, I cannot unsee what you have just shown me

@DampeS8N ........ As a male even I will say it. "EW"

8:54 PM
Contrary to the images I have posted. The Slayers is fantastic. Hilarious D&D campaign-esque fantasy shenanigans.

I did enjoy Slayers.

@JoshuaAslanSmith This reminds me of this.

@BESW bullywogs?
speaking of which, my least favorite 4e monster of all time? Giant Frogs

@waxeagle Only fish instead of frogs.

9:01 PM
gotcha

I do intend to do something interesting with Bullywugs. The disturbing molestation of tadpoles.
And how it isn't frowned on in Wug society because the tadpoles don't remember it.
Also, the males woo the females with song.

I think you chased everyone off with that one Dampe

Probably.
To finish the job. Here is some info on Dragonborn homosexuality...

So why the tadpole thing?

While Homosexuality is rarer in Dragonfolk than in other races, it does exist among around 0.3% of the population. Homosexual intercourse can appear exactly like heterosexual intercourse, with one addition, males can co-penetrate each other in a practice called “braiding.”

Homosexuality is not accepted among most Dragonfolk, and when asked, most will deny it exists at all. Allegations of homosexual acts are typically ignored, but in some rare cases it has led to the end of marriages and the removal of children from the offending party’s care.

9:13 PM
"Braiding" sounds painful.

@Aaron I'm trying to think about how these species would experiment sexually. What they would find pleasurable and how their various societies would have evolved to be the way they are portrayed. Bullywugs are jerks. So self pleasure, at the detriment of others, probably wouldn't bother them.
@ProfessorLokiCaprion I imagine it more like if you made "v for victory" signs with your hands and pushed them together so the Vs intersect.

Oh, so more like scissors than braids.

@ProfessorLokiCaprion Yes, it is co-penetration, and the Dragonfolk each have two penises (if male) and so the act vaguely looks like braided rope. Hence the slang term.

@DampeS8N I'm learning more about inhuman genitalia than I'd ever hoped.
Not sure how I feel about all this.

@ProfessorLokiCaprion Hopefully you are feeling "Hey, that's pretty interesting, I'd buy a book about how mating works for fantasy races if all the info is like this!"

9:22 PM
@DampeS8N Haha... well, I'd give it a glance, at the very least.

@ProfessorLokiCaprion :) I'm shooting for coffee-table-book size and shape. With lots of diagrams and drawings.
about 600-1200 words per race.

@DampeS8N A pop-up book? :D

LOL

lol that'd be...something
(provided the quality rivaled the SW popup book I have)

9:29 PM
And on that note, I leave work!

Ditto.

9:59 PM
I love this chat.
@DampeS8N did you get much out of those books I recommended?

user61230
10:53 PM
@Professor "hoped" or "wanted"?

11:25 PM
Hoped and wanted.

@Emracool What's the context, sorry?
