@Bob I used the red fox icon for firefox when customizing windows XP back in the day.
also, good ol' TURBO PASCAL

Bob
@satibel I'm surprised it had a built-in icon...

How does this answer have an undelete vote? It was deleted by a moderator

Hey guys I'm back and I need your expertise

Hi!

Oh, look who it is

2:08 PM
Lo

My brother's hard drive is starting to fail and I'm doing the whole "backup backup backup" thing

@BenN it was deleted by roomba/community

However, my internet is slow as molasses and I need a cheap service to mail in the drives to a datacenter for offsite backup

0_0
cheap and mailin don't really work

All I can find are "enterprise services" that cost upwards of $80-240 for processing...

Bob
2:09 PM
@oldmud0 uh. failing drive? better off buying a new drive locally.
shipping failing drives sounds like a great way to make them failed drives

No I'm not shipping in the failed drive

@oldmud0 If you HDD contains data that you would send a random person and expect them to handle it properly for $10, then your data is worthless

Bob
@oldmud0 ...wait. what are you doing then?
"mail in the drives" => ?

@OliverSalzburg isn't that called offsite backup?
Anyway, I need to get old backups off the backup drive to make space for new ones

@oldmud0 Yes. And it costs real money if it's done properly ;)

Bob
2:10 PM
or is his drive failing convincing you to backup your drive?

And I don't want to spend $1000 for a nas.

buy a couple of 1-4tb drives and backup to that.

Bob
^

Yeah but they'll fail.

Bob
@oldmud0 also your general location is kinda important

2:11 PM
that's why buy a couple

Bob
not too many ship-in options in australia

Because I'm not the money maker here.

Bob
trust me, I've checked

I live in an urban region of Texas.

How slow exactly is your Internet? It might be reasonable to just let the upload run for a few days

2:12 PM
@oldmud0 I just use CrashPlan and waited until the backup completed at some point. Nobody is going to properly seed your backup from HDDs for pennies

It's 2 Mbps upload and I'm uploading ~250 GB of stuff.

Bob
@BenN 1 TB would take me a month :P

Last time I uploaded a backup, it took me 7 weeks to upload it to Glacier.

backup to both , check them from time to time, If one of them starts to fail (e.g. SMART or unreadable) Backup again.

I uploaded TBs of data to AWS over a period of months
Patience!

2:13 PM
It'll choke my internet for months.

Bob
wait, did I say a month? I meant three months

@oldmud0 I understand the problem. I just don't believe anyone is going to handle this for you any cheaper than what you already found. At least, I wouldn't trust them

good HDDs will stay for 10s of years as cold storage.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I vaguely recall seeing what you're after but I think it was in the other direction

if you want to "cheap out", ask someone with a band drive, and buy a magnetic band cartridge.

Bob
2:16 PM
@oldmud0 idrive.com/idrive-express idk how trustworthy they are
> * This service comes FREE for Express Backup, once a year for Personal users and thrice yearly for Business users. Subsequent backup requests will be subject to the $59.95 charge.
they ship you a 3 TB drive you return

@BenN It was briefly undeleted ...

Bob
they charge storage at $70/TB-year
$52 the first year

I looked at it but it seems a little pricey. Not sure how decent their client software is.
I mean for biz users it's very cheap. But dunno.

Bob
@oldmud0 $70/TB-year is pretty typical
with the once-per-year free ship-in, it's cheap even
assuming I'm reading this right

Isn't it recommended to make offsite backups more frequent than that though? Like every 4 months?

Bob
2:20 PM
@oldmud0 typically the idea of seeding is you only do it for the initial image, and then upload changes as they occur

Bob
ahhh

I'm wondering if there's some kind of untapped market here

Bob
@oldmud0 crashplan used to have it. discontinued 2015. helpdesk.code42.com/hc/en-us/articles/…

This frustrates me. If I just buy an external drive, people will say, "backup offsite too!" but if I can't backup offsite efficiently, then what do I do
There's no reason for me to make a home datacenter

2:23 PM
@oldmud0 backing up offsite's mainly for when your worried about keeping your data after your location catches fire

Bob
@oldmud0 I usually qualify that with "if your data is really important, keep an offsite copy"

And what about the external drive failing? Home external drives are probably the least reliable drives manufactured

Bob
for me, personally, out of >10 TB of data I've got maybe 500 MB that's in that category.
probably < 100 MB even
I just keep those on onedrive. easy, done.
There's very little data that's that important.

@oldmud0 the idea is... you usually won't have two drives failing at once

Bob
If it's something big like childhood videos... toss it on a HDD and leave it at your parent/friend/child's home

2:25 PM
Hah!

lol
@Bob I'm debating talking my brother into hosting a copy of my backups

You always have X+1 drives failing if your solution can handle X drive failures
Always!

Bob
@oldmud0 if your external drive fails? unlucky. but you've halved an unlikely event already.
if you go down the track of "but it can still fail, so I might as well not back up at all!", well, it's your data, and your risk.
personally? I have enough backups to absorb 1.5 drive failures, probably
1 failure without loss, a second failure with partial recovery
that's more than good enough for me
actually, I'm generally more worried about software issues than hardware failure
it's very useful to be able to restore an OS image after something breaks badly

I have my data split between 2 1TB drives, and those are backed up on a 3TB drive.

So where did all the seeded backup services go?

2:28 PM
clearly they didn't make sense since most places that needed it have fast internet

user grade offsite backups are : give a 64 GB key in a labeled shoebox to a few people you know.
it works surprisingly well.

then what's the point of storing backups in a datacenter

Bob
no one ever said it has to be a datacenter

why do people make big fat datacenters in their houses to store their backups

Bob
2:30 PM
pretty sure you just made that part up yourself

@oldmud0 mostly for photography, design and video editing.

and they just use NAS

so just go the regular consumer route and buy another regular consumer-grade drive, and backup your stuff to a single consumer-grade drive?

@Burgi sometimes 400TB raid 0 NAS, but still NAS

or a ton of USB drives

2:32 PM
yup

like a regular human being?

if you Really need security, buy cold storage drives.

Bob
@Burgi I still think external HDDs are better than NASes for backups
unplug the HDD and you're not damaging it by keeping it on, and it's immune to ransomware, power surges, etc
a NAS is only good for file sharing or availability

what about magnetic decay

fair points
lol?

Bob
2:33 PM
@oldmud0 meh, rewrite the drive once a year
a decent HDD should be able to last minimum 5 years, probably 10+, without any decay
I've yet to see any reports of decay tbh

is that really a thing?

cold storage means storing offline btw.

Bob
@Burgi in theory. a little bit of bitrot can happen.

32
A: Does an unplugged hard drive used for data archival deteriorate?

John GardeniersHard drives are unsuitable for anything other than short term archival storage. The problem is not one of data retention, it's the fact that stored drives have a bad track record for not spinning up. Contrary to what Vilx- wrote, many of us know what happens to a drive that's been stored for 20 ...

Bob
if you're really concerned, use parity drives/archives
@oldmud0 look, if you're not accessing your data for 5 years, let alone 20, in a home situation, chances are it's a useless backup
just make a new backup every month. year if you're lazy.
I'd also love to see some evidence/numbers for the "drive not spinning up" claim, tbh

2:37 PM
a bunch of those
and some cheap 1TB drives.

Bob
because that answer is literally the only place making that claim that I can find with a cursory search
actually, spin-up failure is a relatively benign thing too

regular HDDs are fine with semi-cold storage as long as you refresh them every couple of years.

Bob
the data is physically intact and isn't too hard to recover if you really need it
but. I've gone through 5 pages of google.
three forum posts (incl. SF) making that claim
not. one. single. source.
I call bullshit.
sounds like an old wife's tale
here's the SU version of that Q
40
Q: How much time until an unused hard drive loses its data?

AlexDo you guys know how much time needs to pass until the data stored on a hard drive starts to degrade? To keep the data intact for long periods of time, I heard you need to periodically rewrite it on the hard drive, like every 5 years or so. Is it true?

in which the top-voted answer amusingly references that SF answer's claim for spin-up failure and goes on to say they don't believe it's likely
anyway. rewrite once a year. easy, done.

> Notepad++ is trying to reduce the world carbon dioxide emissions.
^^^ Isn't that great?

probably the best way is to get rolling backups, buy a new drive every 2-5 years, and copy to that.
@oldmud0 backblaze.com offers cloud backup service for 5$/month and hard drive shipping for recovery.

Bob
2:56 PM
oh hey. new Surface Pro.
kinda meh this time. CPU refresh I suppose.

Bob
still mostly the "creator"-targeted stuff

3:09 PM
@satibel My internet is really, really slow. Hence I'll just probably go to best buy, buy the least shoddy seagate usb 3.0 hard drive I find (prob for something overpriced like $160) and backup the drive with it. Then I'll wait for the internal hard drive and ssd to come in from amazon.

3:34 PM
@Bob are there tools to do that?
Or good ol' Ctrl+c, Ctrl+v?

A Windows scheduled task could probably do it

Cool
I think I'm going to get serious about my backups
@GypsySpellweaver did you edit index.php?

both WD and seagate are respected companies.

@Avery Yeah
Both are also expensive :/

@Bob copy paste won't rewrite most fs's
it'll simpl;y duplicate the file pointers

4:22 PM
@Avery Hm, so I'll go with the WD, because it has guaranteed delivery by tomorrow

@Rahul2001 damn, that's a nice delivery time

Yeah, about 22 hours :)

we have a week at least here

@Rahul2001 look at the failure rates

@DavidPostill I think I'll go with WD... It also has better amazon reviews :P
While I'm at it, I think I'm going to also purchase one of the super-tiny USB drives.

4:33 PM
@Rahul2001 USB drives have high failure rates

@Avery Hm, so not a good idea to use as add-on storage to a laptop?

I'd recommend getting an HDD caddy for DVD slot and putting an internal HDD there for highest performance and usability

@Avery Hmm. All my drive failures have been internal drives ...

@Avery My laptop doesn't have a DVD slot

@DavidPostill hm, weird

4:37 PM
@Avery And internal drives are not so good for backups. It's not easy to store them offsite ;p

I keep backups on Cloud™
so if stuff breaks 1) I can ask others to fix 2) if it can't be fixed, then I can blame them for bad practises

@Avery Huh, internet connections aren't reliable/fast enough here in India for me to upload and download my data remotely

I have 1mbps upload

@Avery I often get around .7

I just upload necessary stuff

4:46 PM
@Avery I have OneDrive

I use C14.

How are these activity trackers that you wear on your wrist? Who has one?

I have pebble time
it does the job
@Avery I upload my seeeecret stuff on a nuclear attack bunker in paris.
aka encrypted SSH keys and stuff

@Avery Does it measure heart rate? Tracks your sleep?

@Boris_yo it tracks my sleep, is good at it. Pebble 2HR has a heart rate monitor but I don't own one.

4:54 PM
Man, what? Who wants colored subtitles?

@Rahul2001 hm?
.ass/.ssa subtitles are great on anime
(ssa = SubStation Alpha, ass = Advanced SubStation Alpha)

@Avery This is distracting

colored subs give context on normal sub files, but they allow blending into the original video when combined with Advanced SubStation Alpha.
it turns it from a ton of text to lines of speech, imo that's good
if I could add color to xmpp, I would.
even bolding would be cool

@Avery Hm, that's the regular sms app?

Memory compression is cool :)

5:08 PM
Sweet. That's almost enough to run another instance of Notepad

@OliverSalzburg lol
Incidentally, I think Notepad is the only app that has never stopped responding for me
Oh, and minesweeper

@Rahul2001 You can get almost any program to do that through the FileOpen dialog ;D
I manage to do that quite a bit :\

@Rahul2001 that's xmpp

@Avery Cool! I've never really gotten a chance to make use of it

I use it to chat with people with an unnecessary amount of encryption and for my stackexchange chat bridge

5:14 PM
@Avery Beat this!

I wonder how much (computing) time could have been saved if installers didn't have the "Computing space requirements" step and just went for it

OKAY WOW! I have my physics teacher's credit card added to my Amazon Account from a past competition when we had to purchase some parts!

@Rahul2001 Buy gift cards, then sell them on the darknet
^ quality advice

hah

I still have a client's CC added to my namecheap account

5:23 PM
Man, Logan is sad.

@Rahul2001 before I moved to this house:

@Avery Pretty much what I get when at grandparents' house (which is half the time).

and this is my current speeds at new place:

At home I get 8down, 1up

it's normally around 20mbps but it's slow today it seems

David Robinson on May 23, 2017

This morning, a popular Stack Overflow question hit a major milestone:

You’re not alone, jclancy. In the five years since this question was asked, there have been over a million other developers who got stuck in Vim and couldn’t escape without a bit of help. Indeed, the difficulty of quitting the Vim editor is a common joke among developers.

I’ve been told by experienced Vim users that this reputation is unfair, and I’m sure they’re right (even I’ve gotten the hang of it in the last few years). I think there are two reasons it’s easy to forget how to exi …

In a more extreme example:
(on the Dragon, with more than two dozen images open in RawTherapee)

5:50 PM
@bwDraco you probably should restart Chrome

...Firefox. It's pretty memory-intensive in process-per-tab mode.
Not that it's an issue on a system with 24 GB of RAM.

FF is soo slow :(
I use it for privacy reasons, but it's slow.

@Avery Tell me about it.
I use it mainly because of its ability to use a custom server for sync.

It's also a power hog.

5:56 PM
Use chromium?

@Rahul2001 I'm a living tinfoil hat, i don't need lifehacker to tell me what to use

Feb 14 at 15:56, by bwDraco
Microsoft Edge has a huge CPU and therefore power consumption advantage over Firefox. I've tested this firsthand.

@Avery lol

This hat isnt on windows so no edge
i might try chromium but sync is still to google servers

@Avery I recently came across a github repo which compiled chromium without any links or ties to google
Can't seem to find it now though

5:59 PM
Plus why would I need MS Edge? Arch linux is edgy enough.
(Starbait failed)

So, what made you choose Linux?

I just realized why I'm having such massive problems in Chrome with Microsoft sites. They have so many cookies on that domain that the POST requests always exceed their server-side limits

...and an advanced distro like Arch Linux, for that matter.

I hhad been using linux completely since november last year

@Avery Do you recommend arch?

6:02 PM
switched to arch for customization purposes
@Rahul2001 I do.

I have openSUSE on my servers, FWIW.

@Avery Is there a live-boot option with persistence?

@Rahul2001 it's complicated.

:/

live boot ISO doesn't even include a WM/DE
hell you need to install it by hand
but you can probably iinstall it to a flash drive and install stuff etc

6:04 PM
hm

also I've always good with getting work done in short amounts of time evidenced by me moving to arch and freebsd with no prior experience in less than a day

I think I'll try Suse and Ubuntu and chose one of them for now

also xmpp bridge thingy and also more stuff
Use ubuntu, SUSE isn't great for personal uses.

@Avery Hah, me with my first projects with PHP and VBS... Learnt both in a couple of hours, no idea how

Same, with JS and PHP

6:07 PM
Oh, also c++
I haven't gotten around to learning JS yet

I went from zero JS to "big project done" in 24 hours

@Avery This may come in helpful: learnxinyminutes.com

we're still yet to release as I'm lazy and yet to add cloud support
@bwDraco I've seen stuff, man. Scary stuff.

@Avery hm?

Microsoft and privacy related

6:20 PM
@bwDraco Do you recommend SUSE for personal use?

@Rahul2001 I would, but it's a bit heavier than most Linux distros.
Start here:
yesterday, by fixer1234
I've got a Linux distro question. Every once in a while, I explore distros, looking for a good Windows replacement for people who want an easy transition to something very GUI based. The current OpenSUSE seems pretty impressive. Very stable, nicely polished, lots of great documentation, a nice repository, YaST is great, solid long-term infrastructure, etc.

@bwDraco Cool
Their documentation is nice!
@Ullallulloo Whoa! A paperclip joined the room!

@Rahul2001 Yessir

@Ullallulloo Fun tip: Ask a question starting with "how"
And see the magic :P

@Rahul2001 How are you?

6:28 PM
Defeated.

lol

How to pronounce @Ullallulloo?

I'm confused and a bit scared.

@Ullallulloo lol

@jokerdino Like, oo-la-loo-loo

6:29 PM
How do I pronounce @Ullallulloo?

@jokerdino Did it work?

Is something supposed to be happening?

yes

How do I pronounce @Ullallulloo?
oh

lol

6:29 PM
lol

neat
I feel kinship with my annoying cousin.

@Ullallulloo So... what brings you here?

@Rahul2001 oh, y'know. Bored, so I thought I'd check out different sites' chat rooms.

@Ullallulloo I have totally never done that :P

there is an insert coin egg in gaming chat room.

6:32 PM
@Rahul2001 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, feel free to hang around. Right now doesn't seem to be a very chatty time though

@jokerdino Yeah, that's where I've been most
@Rahul2001 yeah, a'ight

I need to increase my MMR.

@jokerdino The... vaccine?

uh no
M M R
I was looking at oollalluluu's dotabuff.

6:35 PM
Right

@jokerdino I'm so bad. It's just been getting worse.

I'm not much of a gamer. Minsweeper, Halo:CE, tetris. That's about it :P

@Ullallulloo yeah I am much worse.
I am the bottom 1%.

6:49 PM
no quiz tonight :(

:(

@Avery Yay! :D

@Avery What theme are you using?

I don't have a chrome theme.

@Avery But... yours is black!

7:16 PM
It's Breeze-Dark and chrome's "use GTK+ theme" feature.

@Avery ah

@Rahul2001 I like meta games
I seldom play but have like 970 games

7:43 PM
This is why my brand-new MX Anywhere 2 is refusing to connect to my Nexus 9. :(

To whomever is flagging things in this room - There is nothing wrong with flagging posts but if you flag something that looks innocuous on the surface, all you're doing is making people distrustful of flags. Please if you actually have a reason to flag something, it is very helpful if you instead use the "Flag for moderator" option and use the explanation field to let us know why you are flagging.
Some spurious flags.

@bwDraco that room always has had flag troll(s) for years
one of the worst offenders on the network imo

in Mathematics, 5 mins ago, by bwDraco
Not sure what's going on, but this smells of a witch-hunt.

ugh, I responded to misused flags yesterday and got warned by a mod so /shrug, I won't deal with this and I recommend you to not.

mathematics most be inclusive, and using word "fuck" discriminates against .. well .. someone

@bwDraco also apparently "witch hunt" is not politically correct anymore.

7:57 PM
@Avery THANKS A LOT TRUMP /s

yeah

@Avery it's wicanphobic and transexcusionary

I can't thank him enough

@Avery that's actually true -- more often than not, if you're not a diamond mod and you see a flag, and go to a room and try to help in any way, you'll get shouted down by regulars, mods from the site, mods from other sites... pretty much everyone
in fact, I don't even think flags should appear for non-diamond mods, at all

@allquixotic Wait, they do?

7:59 PM
they do, to 10k users

@Rahul2001 you just don't have enough rep

Ahh, right

in Mathematics, 12 mins ago, by Astyx
Someone is trying really hard to bring a bad mood in this chatroom

@allquixotic actually, I did it before for a number of times, and even though mods and modflags were involved, I was never yelled at before for it, so I was surprised to the actions of yesterday.
but yeah, not the place to discuss this.
@tereško I can't find any info on what wicanphobic means

focus your search in Tumblr
it should be there

8:12 PM
I'd think that DDG would pick it up if it was on tumblr

@Avery People who have a phobia of Wicca
Wicca (English pronunciation: /ˈwɪkə/), also termed Pagan Witchcraft, is a contemporary Pagan new religious movement. It was developed in England during the first half of the 20th century and was introduced to the public in 1954 by Gerald Gardner, a retired British civil servant. Wicca draws upon a diverse set of ancient pagan and 20th century hermetic motifs for its theological structure and ritual practices. Wicca has no central authority. Its traditional core beliefs, principles and practices were originally outlined in the 1940s and 1950s by Gardner and Doreen Valiente, both in published books...

ah

The only reference I can find is in here jdpendry.com/2010/12/15/phobiamania

same

8:35 PM
@Avery Yay! DDG buddies! :P

@Rahul2001 are you in the secret kool kids club?
(had to make that last bit a c or else the short version wouldn't be... nice)
(hint: duck "ardaozkal" and look at duckduckgo logo at top left)

how did you get that there?

@Avery OKAY WOT
How did you do that?
Wait... Is there really a club?

@tereško it was a "promote DDG get easter egg" thing but they don't allow new people I think

@Avery also, your github shows under the "software" tab
Man, I really should get a unique internet username
