2:01 PM
I mean, I set up a VM for reasons. I'm still going to want a browser, AV....

@JourneymanGeek i'm glad you reopened that meta question about merging

@Burgi well, I felt it needed addressing, there were some good numbers, and considering gracenote's comment, it seemed right

your answer is perfect

Thanks ;p

@DavidPostill Anything about the battery?

2:07 PM
I only learnt about this stackexchange.com/sites#traffic (list view!) today

Morning.
First coffee atm, so it is morning.

@Bob Wait... you can't? My life is a lie

Nope
It basically is a poor man's A record

The hosts file only lets you set where some domains go
To block an IP, use Windows Firewall

i've been ordered to share this

2:15 PM
That still feels like a terrible way to stop updates

@Burgi lol. It just tried to snow here for a few minutes. You got snow in Manchester?

@DavidPostill no

tried to?
Liverpool right @DavidPostill ?

There were a few snowflakes on the ground here

@djsmiley2k Some flakes that didn't settle as the ground is wet (rain) and above freezing.

2:17 PM
hmm

@djsmiley2k L'pool, yes

@JourneymanGeek And arguably Hardware Shopping.

Would depend on the browser too.
and... too broad?

If they specified a browser and removed the hardware rec part, I'd give it a pass

2:20 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that also was my first opinion. I tried to put a constructive answer on it though.

Yeah, that's fine.
Your answer wouldn't fit as a comment anyhow.

And the answer is likely 'moar ram'

BOAR RAM!
Also, 64 bit browsers seem to work better
and SSDs

BEST RAM WILD PIG RAM!

that said you could be pretty happy with a tricked out c2d

2:21 PM
Yes, more DDR2 assuming it is an X64 OS might be the quick fix.
But first determine what the damn bottleneck is.
My old Dell E6500 (core2duo, dual core laptop) still is fast enough to browse the web.

@Hennes yup that.
I always presume ram :D

Granted, max RAM to 4GiB, SSD, Dedicated GPU (and none of that switchable graphics stuff)(

My dad runs something similar with a gig of ram and a SSD
seems happy with it

but also, browsers are just so damn slow sometimes :/

@djsmiley2k the switch to 64 bit firefox seems to be good for me

2:23 PM
But addming more RAM might be expensive. DDR2 is becoming expensive

though I don't run @bob level tabs

@JourneymanGeek I've been on 64 everything for as long as forever
no, me neither
I run as few as possible
and still get angry at slow things are.

I still need office 64

@Hennes my older boxes tend to have parts consolidated as they fail

Bob
@JourneymanGeek :(

2:24 PM
Yup, same here. But after that I start to discard really old stuff

I only have 2 boxes :(

So no more PATA disks.

I have lots of 'boxes' of stuff
plus about 4 spare computers floating around, but none in a condition i'd want to use

yeah, sata, at least 512 mb of ram is my current minimal

No more 8 bits SIMMs, no more DDR1 etc
512MiB also seems max for 32 bit OS
(not 4GiB, since you want unused address space ASR)

2:25 PM
the haiku/lubuntu box I use to log in as aibobot's 512mb of ram. Most of my personal gear's 8gb and up
(1024x768, 4:3 14 inch screen. Rocking it oldschool)

Lets see.
Modern desktops #1 16GiB DDR4,
Modern desktops #2 16GiB DDR4,
Dell R300: 12GiB
Dell R300: 18GiB
Dell R300: no idea. Two GiB Spare parts system.
Laptop: 4GiB (maxed out)

I may hook it up to a TV or sound system in future.

    (\(\
    ( - -)
    ((') (')
A bunny!

Hands the bunny a saucer of coke

right now, one working desktop, one more I haven't decided what to do with (16 and 4gb) laptops 8gb (x220, razer blade stealth) 1gb (r61 x2) 512 mb (r60), NUC class machines - beebox (8gb) gigabyte brix (not in use) 2gb
I've gone through three brix on warranty so I'm not really using that much.
oh, and the stream (2gb)
*sends @Rahul2001 off to an IRC chatroom to think about what he did *

2:32 PM
oh, I forgot the dining room stuff:
Unused (and under layers of dust): Lenovo 3000 laptop (Pentium M740, that is single core era) with 2GiB.
Asus E701 surf (512MiB)
Spare motherboard Gigabyte EX58UD5 (18GiB).

The latter board is probably broken though, and I have nothing which can use the DDR3 DImms (3x2GiB and 3x 4GiB)

I want a pair of something like these next aliexpress.com/store/product/…

I should just toss the Surf PC

but that can wait for a job

Dog
2:33 PM
Bleh. Lenovo putting an AMD R430 dGPU into a Kaby Lake laptop that is literally slower than the iGP and uses more power

Looks like a nice thing. But yuck VGA out

Dog
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Because than you can put 'dedicated GPU' on the box and sell more?

@Hennes you wouldn't ever use the VGA after initial install

Me neither, but I would need to go hunt for a VGA capable monitor.

2:34 PM
oh, I have one

All recent stuff is DVI/HDMI or DP.
No VGA on monitors anymore

the crossover does VGA, HDMI 2.0 and such
and I have a DP/VGA dongle

Heh, India is still stuck on VGA

lots of businesses are too
grumble

I'm expected to take hdmi-vga converters when I go for presentations. Really?

2:36 PM
@Rahul2001 always be prepared.

Yeah, learned that the hard way

Dog
@Hennes WellErf

Yes, because business hardware is usually old.
And business IT mames things simple for end users by only offering one cable. (even if the beamers etc have modern connections)

Dog
Well I suppose it does come with 2GB of VRAM freeing up system RAM, and also freeing up some of the processor's limited TDP for higher turbo speeds
(a 2.4Ghz i7 will throttle to 1.4Ghz if the CPU and GPU are taxed simultaneously, for example)

@Hennes and they can order new PCs in bulk, and not monitors

2:38 PM
That to. Not solid business case.

and reuse whatever crappy old monitors they have until they fail

And the AMD card might offer better outputs.
Though many switchable graphics systems only seem to offer output via the iGPU, And if you Nvidia/AMD card supports DP 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 but the iGPU doesn't then though luck

Bob
@Hennes "better outputs" ... in a laptop?

Work laptop HDMI was insufficient to drive a modern diskplay
It maxed out at 1920x1200 (and a 2560x1440 screen)
It also failed to driver three or more display simultaniously
And yes, I was actively using 3 at that time

Bob
:\

2:44 PM
Quite a few laptops have X outputs put only drive X-1 or X-2 at the same time

Bob
@Rahul2001 dx.com/p/…

I worked around that by adding USB to graphics ports
@Bob supports 1080P
Sounds like single link DVI

Bob
@Hennes That was for Rahul and his presentations.
I'm pretty sure a place that has a VGA projector ain't doing 1080p, let alone higher.

Probably enough for a presentation beamer.

lol
more likely 640x480
I actually do have one of those around, old and lightly used

Bob
2:47 PM
@JourneymanGeek those were the days...
they're often at least 720 vert now though

My own beamer is 800x600 (and has not been used in about a year)

Bob
or 800x600 as a min

Or maybe 2 years
Plenty res. to watch a movie though. I television

oh, my tv does VGA at 800x600 too

There are many ways to make the world better: give to charity, recycle, reduce your energy consumption, design USB products according to spec, do volunteer work
2

2:53 PM
yeah, still have plenty of VGA devices never used as such
lol

@Hennes LOL
> design USB products according to spec

the spec is...
/me screams

the spec is BIOS spec compatible?
Oh wait, there is no BIOS spec.

Bob
The USB spec actually isn't bad.
Reasonably readable.
More readable than a lot of RFCs.

2:59 PM
!!xkcd 927

@Bob probably written by engineers ;p

I like the USD spec
> backed by gold
ha ha yeah right

not since the 70s
Backed by the government's italian car ;p

@JourneymanGeek lol
Why do they still have all that gold in Fort Knox then?

3:06 PM
Nope
It has been moved to the white house for gold plating

@DavidPostill haven't you seen the third die hard movie?

In other news, in the future it will also be known as the "Trump gold house"

"the last audit of Fort Knox occurred in 1953, right after President Eisenhower’s inauguration. Except no outside experts were permitted, and only about 5% of the gold was tested. So there’s been no full audit in over 60 years!"
So it's all lies. The vault is empty and they sold all the gold :)

it was all stolen by that fake eastern european guy

3:17 PM

I will get so pissed if Google shuts down hangouts

The less popular 8.8.4.4 is slated for discontinuation.

Hello... I tried to visit my router's webpage(192.168.1.1 or whatever you call) to change somethings but I found that link or port 80 was not responding?

You aren't able to access the configuration settings?
Uh, are you sure of the IP?

yes

3:30 PM
Hm... Which router is it?

netgear. you want full model num?

Would be helpful

Is there a way to find out without looking on the router?

@DenisKa try rebooting the router or even an alternate ip such as 192.168.0.1

today, I have no weird questions
hopefully, tomorrow, I will not have to

4:16 PM
You want a weird question. I got one. How can I verify I'm using the real internet and not a cloned and edited version where all you people are replaced by secret agents or perhaps worse, regular imposters.

Try 192.168.1.254

because something you put there is tehre, and you never told anyone else about it?

I wish the letter A in ASYNCHRONOUS had a meaning.
Like anti-synchronous
or something

Q: Existence of an Intelligible Physical World beyond the Mind

Or not "always" synchronous
maybe it means alpha
would make sense since alpha generally has bugs.

4:22 PM
@Nick what if you are just a bot?

@djsmiley2k Ok. I'm mostly accessing the real internet, then...hopefully.

bye folks

@Nick "You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes"

@Burgi My sentance structures are too complex to be that which is permuted by a simple minded bot. Also, I'm not sure I'd pass the turing test. So, don't try anything funny like administering it on me.

qGphJD

@DavidPostill I've been taking the blue pill 3 times a day for the past 2 months or more. There's still something off putting with this reality....or maybe it's cleared up and I'm just clinging to the fractional moments it seemed strange. Anyhow, still living the same, following my usual interests, unsure if it's reckless but it's the best I can do with minimal exposition of what really goes on.

We’re back for another edition of the Stack Overflow Developer Survey, the largest and most comprehensive survey of software developers on earth. Every year, we include questions about your favorite technologies, coding habits, and work preferences, as well as how you learn, share, and level up as a developer.

5:01 PM
@WHATEVERDave "a-" is an often used prefix that generally means "without" or "not", as in "asymptomatic" meaning "without symptoms"

2
A: If the prefix "a-" means not, shouldn't "await" or "awaiting" mean, "Not waiting?"

phenryBecause the a- prefix came into English from at least two different sources. In ancient Greek, the privative a was used to indicate the negation or absence of the word to which it was attached. It is often used with words with Greek origins, and is treated as "productive," meaning that people sti...

Gott im himmel...

The dev survey still doesn't have options appropriate for kidzzzzzzz and studentzzzz

Should I get the Assassins Creed Humble Bundle? I've played most of the series, but missed Liberation, Unity and Chronicles...

@Rahul2001 So? "kids and students" don't make them any money so they don't care what they do. They're gathering data to report to their customers.

Got about half an hour of snow down on the south coast...
Raining most of the afternoon, then "wait, that rain looks a bit slow and fat..."

10:47 PM
hi

Hi!

12 hours ago, by DavidPostill
@Dog Well clearly you are looking in the mirror and it actually says "God" on your forehead :)
@DavidPostill But wouldn't it say "ᗡO⅁" then?

Bob
11:18 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy What kind of messed-up mirror are you using?

lol
@Bob An upside down mirror :)

11:35 PM
An Australian mirror?
Oh, UK did an 'EU-turn' on Brexit.
if it was less serious I would be laughing.

@Bob ...a perfectly normal one?
^--- ᗡO⅁

Bob
@Hennes ...what?

I wrote "GOD", in the mirror it becomes "ᗡO⅁".

61% now in favour of stay.

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Your backwards-G is also upside-down.

11:39 PM
⅁ is upside down and a mirror image (reversed).

Bob
@Hennes Yea, but... does that mean anything? UK gov still going forward with it, no?

As far as I know, aye.

See even you are confused.

Might mean a reversal though after next elections.

Or am I confused?

11:41 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Not as confused as you are :)

Damn, who am I?

We all are foncused!

Am I @Dog?
Do I have to start ignoring @DavidPostill now?
Specially because he proved me wrong!
OH MY DOG I AM @GOD!

Bob
@Hennes If they've gone ahead and completed the process of leaving, they can't reverse can they?
What happens first, elections or leaving?

@Hennes We're a Chinese philosopher?

11:42 PM
As far as I know no. Once article 51 is invoked things should be in inrreversable motion.
But that is if rules are followed.
I suspect that if the UK says "Nope. we changed our mind. Cancel everything" that the rest of the EU might go along. Afterall brexit is bad for everybody.
