12:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek Since when do you use python? :P

insert rude joke here

Bob
insert admonishment here

@Bob I've dabbled.

12:59 AM
I rewrote a script for retrieving tweets for grabbing shift codes from Python 2 to 3

3 hours later…
4:04 AM
Before I end my day...
I know this is not new, but the more flexible schedules I have now should mean I can start pushing for earlier wake-up times.
The alarm is set for 8:00 tomorrow.
I know this still isn't great, but it's the best I can manage so far,
I'm hoping to move that towards 7:00 and perhaps towards 5:00 over the next few months.
However, early wake-up times mean early bedtimes, and some issues have been raised before in earlier experiments:
Feb 16 at 11:29, by bwDraco
When I ran the CEO wake-up time experiments last summer, I went to bed as early as 9:00 PM, early enough to cause issues with dinnertime.
I've since come up with ways around the distorted schedules, but the elephant in the room remains: how do I fall asleep earlier?
In any case, good night.

You wake up earlier. I'm up at 6.30 now. Still fixing the falling asleep timing.

2 hours later…
6:23 AM
Anyone there

@Freedo yep

What does that means?
dvd is broken ?
Now this Windows refuses to cancel and close too. How can I kill it? Doesn't have any obvious process on task manager

6:40 AM
does the cancel button not respond?

no...but It did after pulling out the DVD...but is there any way to recover data if the dvd is in bad condition ?
it's a video file. even If I cant get the whole file I would like if Windows would let me save and use whatever I can copy

7:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek I clicked that bricksforbears link. The target site is weird

morning
lets find out what crazy shizz has happened while i have been on holiday

7:57 AM
Lots.

some

No. Literally lots.

oh?
i've just found a 185mb plain text file called "passwords" on the IT area of our file server

Sure. .... that's a lot of passwords...m

Bob
8:25 AM
ugh. 1000mg of paracetamol later and the headache hasn't really changed :/

thats quite high

Bob
not really, standard dose is 500-1000

(UK) Doctors recommend a maximum daily dose of eight 500mg paracetamol tablets, to be taken no more than two at a time during each 24-hour period.

i tend to find it takes about 30 minutes to start working
hmmm.... "anonymous employee survey" has a login page....

@Burgi How else would you prevent the same employee filling in the survey 27 times?

8:38 AM
cookies!

@Burgi And what if they have multiple PCs/laptops/iPhones/Androids ... ?

stop making valid points and conform to my mistrust of management!

Are any Excel experts around by any chance? Because I'm frustrated by some serious wtf-worthy behavior

go on...

I'm tempted to open a question about it, but I'm not sure if it needs actually needs multiple questions

8:43 AM
@Burgi Anonymous surveys are very hard to get right ...

i know

So, you take a new Excel sheet and paste a sentence into A1, like "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua"
The result for me is like this:

yes....

Give me a moment to reproduce this. I don't want to share the data I'm actually working with ;P
I now stretch column A to fit more text
I then break the text into two lines, with Alt+Enter
I now revert the change I just made and now the text is still broken into two lines, and there is an empty line above the text
And even if I double-click the row separator, the empty line remains
And I don't know why it's broken into multiple lines

is it formated as text?

8:50 AM
It is formatted as "Standard" as that is the default

is it formatted to vertically align to the bottom?

And changing it to "Text" makes no difference
@Burgi Why would the bottom be lower than the boundaries of the only text in the whole sheet?
And, yes, it is. If I set it to align to the top, then I get an empty line on the bottom

is the word wrap checkbox ticked?

@Burgi Ah. Yes, it is. Apparently, that is enabled automatically once you Alt+Enter and then it stays enabled, even if you revert the change
So that explains that part
Now I just have the unexplained empty line remaining :P

Q: Excel - Get rid of extra space in cell when using Text Wrap

JuncoWhen I type a long sentence (or more than one sentence) into more than one cell in a row, and apply the Text Wrap option to these cells, the cells have an extra blank line on the bottom of them. There are no extra spaces after my text. I have put the cursor at the end of the text and used the Del...

@OliverSalzburg 0_0. Whaaaat?

Sock alert! :)

logged in as aibo on my office pc. Its a lull period ;p
I don't trust the systems here enough to log in with my real-ultimate power account ;p
there's like a half dozen copies of winvnc lying around
tbh, I don't mind an old system. A fresh install would be nice
also, at some point I swear I will find a user with a 100gb mail archive.
Yay, nearly had a old dead drive ._.
@OliverSalzburg that is wierd. Maybe the site died and got typosquatted..
@DavidPostill I like socks, socks socks socks....

9:49 AM
@OliverSalzburg hope my poking helped ;)

10:06 AM
Woof. On my way home :p
Eh. An actually useful ad screen. Says what the next bus is amongst other things.

But 8:00 am isn't enough and I'm hoping to improve upon this.

Its a full x86 emulator with networking, Written in JS

12:22 PM
@bwDraco do you have a job now?

Not a full-time one just yet, stiill doing sports photography for my college.
@JourneymanGeek This is why i need to learn JS :\

@bwDraco for context, fabrice ballard did that...
(QEMU author and all round cool guy)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek There's a few of those around
@JourneymanGeek O_O Rydalmere?!?!
I was there just a couple weeks ago!
Well, didn't know Jaycar was there

@Bob he picked up like 20-30 PVRs for a dollar to shuck the hard drives

Bob
@JourneymanGeek PVR?
Oh. Video recorders.

12:30 PM
yup

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm gonna need to remember to take a look next year :P

;p
If you do, I demand pictures of your buys ;p
I'd be a sucker for something like that

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Heh. Would have to remember to go first.

@Burgi Well, I learned about the text wrap feature ;D

Bob
12:34 PM

Bob

that's pretty scary

> Microsoft has pushed out a bad update that breaks important PowerShell functionality

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Would be nice RAID-0 :P
20-drive RAID-0
need more SATA ports though

Well, what am I wasting time doing? Let's start up NetBeans and get to work :)
in Sandbox, 3 mins ago, by bwDraco
Folks, can we not play with flags? This room is for experimentation, sure, but flags draw in mods and 10k users unnecessarily.

12:57 PM
but by doing that, you risk drawing in mods and 10K users...
Its something that should have been handled, and by linking it....

sorry. Wisdom of the mods :\
I wish I had the same experience...

@Burgi Just wanted to know what ou think of it so far
I'm learning PHP as I go, so progress is kinda slow
ALso, exams going on right now

@Burgi linky?

oh fuck i had dozed off then
luckily with my headphones on
your bings woke me up

Ah, well. Much to learn, but I'm working on getting there faster, starting from better decision-making.
I won't forsake my promise. Ever.

@Burgi sorry?

> Insiders not testing on real systems (because they're advised not to use it on their primary PCs)
They're technically not allowed to

huh?

@Rahul2001 don't worry its a good thing, i'm in work

@Burgi oh, lol

@Rahul2001 i'm struggling to see what you are doing with the post number.php pages

> this Agreement does not give you any right to, and you may not:
i. use the Software in a live operating environment

@Burgi if the user goes to example.com/finch/index.php?post=0, it displays 0.php

@Burgi "A revised package that includes these missing files will be released on August 30; although Microsoft recognizes that the problem exists, it isn't apparently important enough to rush out a fix, so it'll have to wait for the next Tuesday."

mpbloch Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my software licensing question? In the Windows 7 RC EULA, what is meant by "use ... in a live operating environment"? I don't know if I am "in a live operating environment" or not. Has anyone encountered this question before? In response to fr...

Hmm...

1:09 PM
@Burgi I was expecting something important from your post :/

Similarly ?post=299 displays post no 229

sorry i'll up the quality next time ;)
why are you storing the post content in files?

@Burgi uh, what should I do instead?

> Microsoft's challenge here is considerable. Nothing else on earth has to support the same diversity of hardware and software compatibility as Windows. Weird corner cases and obscure hardware complaints are, on some level, inevitable. Upending a development process that has, for literally decades, been geared toward a big release every three years is no small undertaking, and it's not surprising that Microsoft is taking some time to get things right.
This is something Apple has never had to deal with.
As much as I hate Apple's closed platforms, there is an undeniable advantage to vertical integration.
Obviously, as a computer designed by Microsoft, Surface is better in this regard, but that doesn't account for the myriad combinations of hardware and software that users run Windows with.

1:28 PM
@bwDraco We don't expect anything. You are the one with the expectations. As I've said before, "actions speak louder than words" and we really don't need to see all these retrospective reminders on what you said last year (or the year before) ...

Hillary Clinton may become the first F president... Sorry, the emale got deleted.

Instead of spending all this time talking about it, spend the time doing it ...

:32553089 laughing is okay.

@DavidPostill The big question is precise what do I do.

@bwDraco Timeout is good :)

1:30 PM
You see, a fundamental issue is the lack of a concrete goal to work on.

@bwDraco We've told you many times what you can do. It is up to you to go and do it.
We cannot decide your goals. That is your personal decision to make.

Alright, let's move on.
I don't want to draw too much attention to this.

@Rahul2001 database

@Burgi IDK SQL
SQL is messy on shared hosting, I think

1:33 PM
@bwDraco Exactly. Your behaviour right now is attention seeking. That is something you can also work on. You really don't need to share so much of this "personal growth" angst.

Well, I don't have a way to positively demonstrate this. Good behavior is more often than not absence of bad behavior, which is hard to show.

We don't need reminders of what you said in the past.

Can you remove messages from here to here (move to Recycle Bin, etc.)?

Nobody (as far as I know) is keeping a log of your "bad" behaviour (other than yourself).

@bwDraco Uh, why?

1:35 PM
I'm trying to reverse the attention-seeking behavior.
Okay. Can I disable Clippy? meta.superuser.com/questions/9200/… (10k only)

@bwDraco No. Clippy deserves some love

5 messages moved to Trash

Thanks.

@bwDraco you don't need to, other than to anyone but yourself

@JourneymanGeek Can you please try to reply to specific messages as appropriate? It's hard to tell the context of this message.
(I know using the mouse or the mobile chat UI to select a message may not be convenient, but still...)

1:40 PM
@bwDraco Well clearly I'm not talking about clippy
But the general constantly telling us how you want to improve your behavior... is tiresome

...am I at risk of getting suspended for doing this?

I'm waking up at 6.30 now
Not cause a CEO did it
But cause I need to wake up that early to get to work
Nope
Just pissing off a lot of people
which may be worse

Let's forget about this.
I think we might need to remove a lot more messages so I can't easily repost them.

er. Why not actually ... not do it?

It's not that simple.

1:42 PM
If self control is an issue, you need to actually start with... self control

I promised to think before I act. Sorry for failing to do so.

You constantly say that

Let's continue in the mod room.

shrug
We're talking here.
Change is something you choose, with little steps. "Its not simple" - what is?
The trick is to realise change is internal and constant.

Q: What do you call a Mexican that lost his car?
A: Carlos

1:45 PM
@Rahul2001 That can be seen as racist. Please watch what you post; I nearly flagged it.

@Rahul2001 You good sir... are a ruffian and a malcontent.
(also, that is kinda funny)

vin
Hi, Firefox 42 on Windows 7 64 has about 85 threads as of now (I have 15 tabs open). Where can I find information about threading logic of FF? I am looking for high level info and don't want to sift through code. Thanks.

@bwDraco Car-lost. Really? Racist?

@vin I'm sure someone here's gotta have read through that documentation....
@bwDraco and managed to threaten someone in the process

1:47 PM
Unintended consequences :\
Sorry, stepping out.

Are there any actual mexicans here? If so, I'd actually ask them "Hey, is this cool?"

Okay.
One of the big practical issues I'm trying to deal with (and I don't think I've mentioned this before) is the need to check every action individually. This means that every little action needs to be checked, which would greatly impede everyday activities like chatting.

@vin I don't know anything about coding buuuut developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/The_Thread_Manager might be a starting point?
@bwDraco A good question to ask yourself is "need I bother?"
a second thing to realise is when to drop it

It's a huge stumbling block for me. How do I know when to check?

Well, most of the time... I don't bother, and I drop it once handled.

1:50 PM
@bwDraco Every time before you hit the send button?

or that ;p

@DavidPostill Again:
> This means that every little action needs to be checked, which would greatly impede everyday activities like chatting.

In a sense, there's nothing much online that needs me to fix it

Checking every individual activity isn't exact feasible.

@DavidPostill People seriously do that? I just press enter :P

1:50 PM
That's the whole point of the question.

@bwDraco I think a good starting point for you is to stop trying to moderate others.

I intend to continue, but with stronger checks than before.

You arn't doing a good job moderating your own actions

No it doesn't. Just read it twice before you post. No different to checking for spelling mistakes.

I'm confident I can do this right as long as I slow down and check.

1:51 PM
So, if you're telling someone "knock it off" - don't. If its accusatory, don't...

...am I sure?

Am I ever?

@JourneymanGeek Uh... @bwDraco I think that it will become kinda natural if you do that for a while...

Nope
I treat this exactly the same as I would a meatspace conversation

I talked about hubris before. Knowing that something is hard to do correctly and trying to do it anyway (even with added checks) isn't exactly the best idea.

vin
1:52 PM
@JourneymanGeek That link is a dev interface. I am looking for how, when and why of threading within the FF browser.

meatspace?

Would I accuse someone of saying something racist? Rarely. Would I go "duuuuude"

@JourneymanGeek I've already tried doing this; I can't.

@Rahul2001 "They are made of meat" Also shorthand for the real world.

@Rahul2001 Real life face to face

1:53 PM
Ah, okay

yanno, big blue room, insanely bright LED in the sky...

@bwDraco Why not?

@vin I half suspect @Bob might have an idea ;p

@bwDraco IMO You are being very vague here... ANd it is getting annoying

@JourneymanGeek Pretty sure I can do this if I add more checks. I don't intend to stop trying to mod, but I'm going to dramatically tighten up.

1:54 PM
@bwDraco stop trying to mod.
In the average non dramatic week, I almost never put my mod hat on in normal chat

I'm very confident I can succeed as long as I check my words.
I just need to not overdo it.

Read my text stop trying to mod
at all
You'll likely be happier for it

I'll just go with the flow. Anything needs mod attention, sure, I'll flag it. I'll just be a lot more careful.

not "mod a bit" "mod a smidgen"
Nothing needs your attention
Hell, nothing needs my attention (except when I sleep, ironically)

(sorry, edited to clarify)

1:57 PM
If someone comes in and cusses out out, let it go, let someone else handle it.

I think I'm confident enough to say I can handle it, I just need to be more careful. Changes are being put into place.
I'd rather not give up completely, as that is basically saying "I can never do it at all".

@bwDraco We have enough room owners and mods hangin' out here that you don't need to worry about stuff.

I'll adjust the thresholds for moderation actions accordingly but continue to participate as I did before.

and tbh, the whole flood of room owners was primarily to deal with one specific problem
@bwDraco If you arn't going to read what I said... I have nothing else to say

@bwDraco You are a regular user, not a mod... chillax a bit?

1:59 PM
...and my continuing to make this argument risks a suspension for disobeying a mod's orders.
