I think I've posted screenshots of that

Clippy how do I make my coworkers SHUT THE F@$%# UP

Oh, great. The only time you actually want Clippy to show up, it won't!

how do I stop @ThatBrazilianGuy whining?

@ThatBrazilianGuy the north americans tend to use an assault rifle....

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy That sounds like something the Brazi- oh.

cat
@JourneymanGeek Max Curr: 1800mA Current Curr: 3500mA Huh
Anyway. QC is basically adaptive voltage, constant current.

Bob
3:10 PM
Mine is currently maxing out at ~2800mA on QC2.0 at 40%.

cat
@Bob Yeah that's about what the S7 will manage

Bob
@cat With the screen off, of course :P
I'd like to see actual line current and voltage but I'll have ot wait for delivery of that meter first.

cat
@Bob I'm <================ this =================> close to finding a kernel hack to override that

Bob
ohai clippy

cat
It does appear that using QC instead of "regular" 5v/2A charging adds an additional ~10% of power loss mind you. (Charging off my portable charger that is)

Bob
3:11 PM
@cat Lemme know if you find one.

cat
Which isn't that surprising - converting off a LiIon cell #up to 9v and back down again.

Bob
Switch screen on => 1000mA max charge current.
Samsung, wat.

cat
@Bob Not even: Screen on, maximum draw of 6w from the port.
Whether you get 1000mA or not depends on if the rest of the phone is using 5w or not :-P
Didn't you say some LG phones had the same "feature" though?

Bob
@cat I'm just going by what Ampere reports
@cat Yea the G4 was even worse
I think it did some 500mA charge

cat
@Bob Run 6 threads of CPUBurn in the background and watch your Ampere rate plummet ;)

Bob
3:14 PM
Didn't have Ampere at the time
Screen on, otherwise idle
Anyway, bought two a to c cables
Crap, forgot to include a hub in the order...

cat
@djsmiley2k No not really, just a very poor answer

i flagged it as spam
last week

cat
I don't see how it's spam

3:23 PM
@cat max current is detected for USB C and is for cables apparently. Shouldn't exceed 3A

That's not quite spam (even though it may read like one).

i just skipped as 'wtf?'

@Bob eh, a USB voltmeter is tempting but I haz too much stuff

Bob
@JourneymanGeek heh, well, I was paying $14 for the express shipping anyway, so...
I'm just annoyed that I forgot the hub
eh, next time

We're moving to another home soon.

Bob
3:24 PM
or the 3-4-week free airmail

Hence we're getting rid of lots of stuff.

Bob
hm. S7 Edge price dropped again at the place I bought it
let's see if my CC will be willing to refund another $48 :D

@Bob most of my current stuff's in

cat
@Bob Order the hub now with free delivery?

Bob
@cat eh, could do, but I don't really need the hub anyway

3:26 PM
I might tack that on with, I donno, something else

Bob
that tablet is my only USB-C dev

I might want to get a skinnier phone case

Bob
and I have the USB3 OTG cable anyway
USB-C to USB-A 3.0 hub would be interesting but not particularly useful

oh, and in case I forgot - @cat yeah, bought and installed. Seems to work

cat
@JourneymanGeek Does it make the back of the phone/case bulge?

Bob
3:27 PM
oh is this the qi thing?

cat
Mine seems to stick out enough to have made the case crack :-/

@cat no
seems snug but not bulgy

cat
Hmm
Maybe mine was just an extra shitty one... where did you get yours from?

"made the case crack" 0_0
dx?

Bob
@cat wait, what phone? o.O I thought the S7 included one
S4?

cat
3:28 PM
@Bob S4

Bob
ah

and it was pretty shitty, the soldering on the pins was a bit off kilter

Bob
I can try installing mine
no idea where I put it

dx.com/p/… Is the one I got
looks like the S4's connection points are different

...wait a sec. On a closer look, that answer is spam.
Links for unaffiliated products alongside an unlinked, obscure product are an attempt to deceive reviewers.

3:34 PM
naw, its just a shitty answer
rofl
its a review audit?

Bob
oh, found it
next up: finding my S4

0_0
@Bob isn't that your primary phone?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek come to think of it I appear to have lost my S7 too

@cat DX is my favoured crapgadget vendor.

Bob
oh it's on my bed

cat
3:36 PM

Happy bday @JMG

I do sometimes buy stuff elsewhere but not as much

cat
The connectors on my S4 one aren't even straight

@cat my brother's s3 has the same style of case, but flippy

cat
I had the flippy S3 case
Good job that's not my back cover
That said I did notice the battery I pulled from that phone was severely bloated a few days ago but didn't notice it being bloated when I took it out

3:38 PM
the druggies are back

@JourneymanGeek IT'S A TRAP!

Bob

@JourneymanGeek Read this as craigslist
then went 'wtf you have a favorate on craigslist!?'

tho, I sometimes buy (suprisingly big ticket items) off ebay

Bob

"That said I did notice the battery I pulled from that phone was severely bloated a few days ago but didn't notice it being bloated when I took it out"
There's a question on that on SU....

Bob
oh the charger works with s7 if I position it juuuuust right
dunno why people like wireless charging :\

cat
@Bob It's great for the super lazy

Bob
I'm too lazy
wired is easier

cat
3:43 PM
As in when I have to pull my phone up twenty times in a night while lying in bed and can't be bothered dragging the cable or disconnecting it

@Bob the phone has a dodgy charger that works if you hold it just right and this seemed an easier option

Bob
wireless is fiddly

cat
Or when I put my phone down in the office and can't be bothered finding my USB cable

@HackToHell thanks
@Bob it is

cat
I can also have one charger work with many phone, even USB-C ones
@Bob Nah. The new Samsung fast charger fixes that

3:44 PM
@cat as long as it dosen't have an AL shell

Bob
@cat ah, I don't have the particularly new stuff
sitll, I like being able to use my phone while it's charging :P
the only use-case for wireless that makes sense to me is when the wired port is wet

cat
@Bob It's just a stand so the phone always slots into the correct position
@Bob Oh yeah, there's that too

Bob
@cat I have this one: ozbargain.com.au/node/195419
marked price is something like $130 O_O

cat
Huh. That should be relatively un-fiddly

Bob
@cat I put it on... it didn't charge

Bob
I took it off and put it on a few more times... charge
at 220mA.

On that one it either charges or falls off.
You know it's not charging if it falls off

@cat lol

we are thinking of setting up a website called druggie-watch.co.uk

@cat that's a feature

cat
If it doesn't fall off, it pretty much always charges, nomatter what orientation

@Burgi webcam. Then eventually deathmatches.

cat
Took 2.5 hours to charge my S4 wirelessly last night
Not great, but not terrible
I wish my motorbike had wireless charging, because then I wouldn't have tugged my phone off the dash by the cable and smashed the glass

3:48 PM
the police still haven't arrived

None of my devices have wireless charging :(

@JourneymanGeek thats the plan ;)
i use the USB port in my car to charge my devices
or the 12v

Bob
@Burgi wait police what

cat
@Burgi Lot harder to drop a phone on a petrol station forecourt when it's in a car than on a bike :-/
But yeah, I smashed the back of my S7
At a petrol stop I didn't even need or want to do

Bob
@cat O_O already?!
...insurance?

cat
@Bob Yup

Bob
or just stick it in a case I guess

cat
@Bob Maybe

Bob
glass replacement on the S7... is pretty iffy
the curved edges :\
and yours is curved on the back more

cat
Yup

3:51 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy sounds legit

cat
I could live with it if it was still waterproof, but I'm not certain, and the only way to find out is to well... break it

Bob
urk
would your insurance care if it had water damage in addition to the cracks? :P

@JourneymanGeek Happy birthday my man.

Bob
@cat could always coat the back in silicone? wouldn't look particularly nice

cat
@Bob Lol

3:54 PM
@jokerdino XD. just in time ;p
Thanks
@Bob or a case...

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy TFTS?
I opened that tab a few hours ago but didn't actually read it :P

I have one of those ugly wallet tyle ones

Bob
@JourneymanGeek cases usually aren't waterproof
especially when the phone itself already is

@JourneymanGeek woo, 6 minutes on the clock.

@Bob Yeah. That's one of my daily reads ;p

3:58 PM
I saw a horrible "lifehack" on YouTube with the eggs from Kinder Surprises (illegal in the USA according to the FDA), and they used saran wrap, those eggs, and hot glue to make a "case" for your phone

Kinder Eggs are illegal in the US?!?!?!?!??!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!??!
The only reason I can imagine is "OMG think of the cildrennn!!!!!111!1oneone1"

Bob
what thermal paste do people use these days?

Because it has non-food inside of food... Breaks one of the FDA's rules

Bob
last time (~2012) I just used AS5

I still use Arctic Silver 5 @Bob

Bob
4:02 PM
ah, so not many changes then?

fourth deal of the day.... same users, different cars

Microwave ovens and Wi-Fi: How bad is it for you? I tend to get a slightly degraded signal and performance when the microwave is running. (This should have no effect if you use 802.11ac, but just asking...)

@bwDraco It affects one of the buildings I support, but I suspect it's because they have a laser printer, switch, 2 computers and a Wifi router on the same circuit...

@Bob I have a few crazy stories I've been meaning to submit to TFTS for ages...

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Link em here when do you? :P

4:07 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy its because the toy inside is not edible

Bob
@bwDraco eh, use 5ghz, or switch around channels on 2.4

@Bob Will do

Bob
many microwaves use a narrow enough band that there's often one or two wifi channels without too much noise

@CanadianLuke I could understand if it was because of really small pieces in kids' toys. But "non-food inside food"?
"We officially consider our population to be so stupid as to not being able of understanding what's edible and what's not" -- The US FDA.

Google kinder surprise illegal in usa

4:11 PM
@Burgi Did the police send them away the first time?

the police have not been
> Customs and Border Protection not only confiscated the Kinder eggs, but also fined the family $1,200 [£787] per egg, or $12,000 [£7,870] total.
@DavidPostill its really dodgy because we all park in that car park

Am I the only one who thinks this question about a phone battery is off topic?

@Burgi I... don't... I.... but.... but.... I.... SYSTEM ERROR
> While conducting research on this paper, I discovered that Mars actively lobbied the US government to have confections with interior toys banned any time a similar product comes on the market.
Hmmmmmmm...

@Burgi I'm surprised. I presume you told them naked people are shooting up?

4:19 PM
@DavidPostill yup

@CanadianLuke Yes. Because it's not specifically about phones batteries.
I removed the phone reference as phones are technically off topic for Super User. This condition can affect any pouch LiPo or prismatic Li-ion battery; most thin-and-light laptops use pouch LiPo batteries and can be affected by the same issue, so this question can certainly extend to computer hardware. — bwDraco 2 days ago

@ThatBrazilianGuy Oy vey. Business is so cutthroat these days...

@Burgi I wonder what more urgent business they have to attend to first ...

Well, in today's economy, spending is lower than ever before and so this is the only choice to stay in business.
The economy is a harsh mistress...

!! s/these days//

4:22 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy @ThatBrazilianGuy Oy vey. Business is so cutthroat ... (source)

Well, it's the only way to survive.
Every last penny counts.

I like to imagine there are less brutal ways of doing business. Regulation, when done right, is good for the society.

That's the problem. Regulation is very hard to do correctly and is constantly subject to the pressure of lobbyists, with politicians under threat of losing big chunks of campaign money if they don't do as they say.

Wow, this seems real:
Georgia: "We must protect women from perverts by excluding trans ppl from bathrooms." Also Georgia: https://twitter.com/Independent/status/756887348143685633

There needs to be a better way to allow the common man to chip in as little as $5 to support the political goals the people support.
@Hennes Not in New York:
> Use the Bathroom Consistent With Who You Are

4:34 PM
@Hennes But.... I.... What... I mean... but.... but... I... SYSTEM ERROR
This news really makes me want to punch someone. Hard.

@DavidPostill Alright

Giving the common man easy access to the campaign contribution system would even up the odds and give the people a fighting chance at beating the corporate lobbyists.
After all, we individuals are voting on paper only. Corporations vote with money. It's time to make the system fairer.

This game looks gorgeously beautiful and is 75% off on steam for the next 20min: store.steampowered.com/app/356050/?snr=1_620_4_1400_45_1 - Beyond Eyes

I know this may not be an ideal solution but we need to fight fire with fire until corporations realize that they cannot overpower the people.
In theory, the common person can make campaign contributions through the appropriate channels, but in practice, only the most ardant supporters actually do so.
$5 each from hundreds of thousands of people can turn the tide.
It seems people are contributing to corporate-run PACs instead. What about making choices more readily apparent to the folks already contributing?
Instead of contributing to your employer's PAC and supporting a cause you may not like, how about giving to the candidates you like?
Giving the people the freedom to contribute to the political campaigns they care about will enable the people to take power back from greedy corporations.
Multi-billion-dollar corporations shouldn't be the only ones playing the political money game.

5:04 PM
Yuck. Employers are given free rein to fire employees on political grounds.
That means an employer can compel its employees to contribute to a particular political cause.
Until the law is changed, it looks like a nontrivial subset of people have little in the way of political freedom and are little more than pawns in the political money game.

5:22 PM
@bwDraco That sucks big time. Enough to completely put me off ever wanting to work in the US.

> In most states, managers have the legal right to mandate worker attendance at a political rally for a favored candidateβ€”and fire or punish workers who decline to participate.
=/
That would be an easily-won lawsuit here.

@ThatBrazilianGuy And that's in a country that apparently had to make "free speech" a law...
Can you turn up with a sign that says "X is a douchebag, I'm here because my manager is one too" and fulfil both free speech and the turn up at a rally thing?

@Mokubai lol. You might get lynched!
@ThatBrazilianGuy And in the UK I hope ...

Granted it might not do your promotion prospects any good...

@Mokubai Yeah, and then you can be fired because of at-will employment.
@Mokubai Well, "free speech" means only you can't be prevented from saying what you want. It won't exempt you from consequences.

Wait what?
So you literally have no protection as a workforce?
It's just "I don't like you, don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out." ?
I'm pretty sure here there has to be a real reason to fire people

7:10 PM
And free speech is only free speech by the Governments definition. It is not completely free.
Freedom of speech does not include the right:

To incite actions that would harm others (e.g., β€œ[S]hout[ing] β€˜fire’ in a crowded theater.”).
Schenck v. United States, 249 U.S. 47 (1919).
To make or distribute obscene materials.
Roth v. United States, 354 U.S. 476 (1957).
To burn draft cards as an anti-war protest.
United States v. O’Brien, 391 U.S. 367 (1968).
To permit students to print articles in a school newspaper over the objections of the school administration.
Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, 484 U.S. 260 (1988).

Like negligence or non-fulfilment of duties and stuff

@Mokubai "If they are employed β€œat will,” as most workers are, they can have their hours or wages changed or be fired without cause, as long as it is not for a narrowly defined set of legally protected reasons, such as religion, race, or gender."
The Supreme Court’s decision in the 2010 "Citizens United" case

Well stuff that for a game of soldiers.

Zero job security, forced to support Trump by your boss, and docked pay for not actually being at work while you do it. Sounds awesome.

7:15 PM
@Mokubai From what I've heard, that's exactly how "at will" employment works.
Stuff's scary.

Hmm. "At will" means employment without a contract. How is this possible? Don't companies in the US have employment contracts?
At-will employment is a legal presumption in all U.S. states (other than Montana), whereby either an employer or an employee may, with no adverse legal consequences, terminate the employment relationship for any legal or no reason. The at-will doctrine is not itself a form or component of contract, but rather is the default state deemed to exist prior to any contractual override. However, the presumption can be overridden by an employment contract, either explicit or, in several states, implicit. For examples, in workplaces with a trade union recognized for purposes of collective bargaining, and...

@DavidPostill it's what happens in a country where the companies rule.

America Incorporated

It seems like a reasonable default to me, with the libertarian context that people and companies can work out whatever arrangements they like

7:23 PM
cept companies can afford to not hire you
you can't afford to not be hired.

Though obviously companies shouldn't completely own their workers; forcing them to support a political candidate is completely wild

It's not a level playing field
@BenN this would work if you had the option of easily going to another employer, i.e. enough jobs.

Right, that's the trick
Fortunately in my area there are currently all kinds of jobs, though I don't know how other places are doing

yeah well from what I here, america isn't doing so great
on that, or any fronts.
other than maybe lack of terrorism attacks lately...
