@JourneymanGeek Do you like point-and-click adventures? Indie games?

@ThatBrazilianGuy oldschool? Yeah

@JourneymanGeek New, but inspired by oldschool. Do you know / own The Dream Machine?

oldschooliah I suppose, they're making a comeback
nope

Now you do ;p

Hope you enjoy, it's a game I really loved back when it was released (2011 IIRC)
It's all handmade in clay and stopmotion, great soundtrack...

initially released 2010... still is getting bugfixed and updated. I'm impressed

It's a 2-guys dev studio
There's 6 planned chapters, they have so far released only 5 (The code I sent you has the first three)

4:48 AM
hey folks
@JourneymanGeek you have a Lenovo/Thinkpad?
my work has given me a new Lenovo E41 and it has the shity Fn-place-where-Ctrl should be keyboard. Any way to swap these two? No options to change in EFI and xev doesn;t detect the keypress
(running on Mint)

5:36 AM
@Sathya Yeah, I consider that the 'correct' layout ;p
and no, its hardware level usually and there's no way to change it AFAIK. That said, I've never wanted to
(the reason the key's in that corner is so you can hit the top right and bottom left keys to turn on the keyboard light in the dark)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek !!no

5:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek nonononono

heathens ;p

That's the only reason I didn't buy a thinkpad when I was given the opportunity

(that said, I think in 2-3 models lenovo would likely change it cause everyone else does it the other way)

It's funny how both the thinkpad's best feature and worst feature lie in the keyboard...
@JourneymanGeek I went with an ideapad instead... :)

@Rahul2001 they stopped making the classic Thinkpad keyboard now

6:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek So... it's worse now?

Yup
It's nearly the same as everyone else.
Except when they change things with no good reason like with the x1 keyboard

Do Firefox and Chrome have a spellcheck built-in dictionary that works offline?

Bob
@cpx Firefox: yes
Chrome, dunno

cpx
I just noticed when I blocked my Chrome in Firewalls and it could still squiggle incorrectly typed words.

Bob
@Rahul2001 My single Lenovo laptop (that tablet doesn't count!) did that dodgy fn thing. I decided then and there to never buy Lenovo keyboards again. Ever.

cpx
@Bob: The dictionary file seems to be well hidden.

Bob
Single absolutely most infuriatingly frustrating experience I've ever had with a keyboard.
And that includes the dodgy UK layout keyboards with funny backspace sizes and backslash locations.
@cpx It's not hidden at all. Firefox just packs most resources into omni.ja
Actually it's not even packed now.
It just sits right there in the install folder.

6:46 AM
omni lol, that is what i call my disk with all manners of stuff in it, the one that the label alone couldnt designate what is stored in it.

Bob
Under the very hard-to-find folder named dictionaries
I'm shocked that they would pick such an obscure name. Shocked, I tell you.

How small it is.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ctrl is among my most-pressed keys. Fn my least.
@cpx That's pretty damn massive.
That's 563000 characters.
Assuming an average of maybe 5 chars per word, that's over 100000 words

Bob
6:49 AM
Ok, my average was off :P
Ah, it has tags indicating category (noun, verb, etc.)

cpx
A user-specific custom dictionary too named as "persdict.dat". That's what I was looking for.

Bob
ah

cpx
The tags in dictionary are confusing.

@Bob only laptops I've owned for decades are Thinkpads.

cpx
I was also wondering how does it check if a word in dictionary has to be capitalized.

Bob
6:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek It also differs from just about every desktop keyboard.
@cpx Proper nouns are always capitalised and are tehrefore capitalised in the dictionary. Otherwise it'd just follow sentence-case.

"I stored all my data in the cloud, then one day it rained" :-)

cpx
> Orange/M
> Seattle/M
The last one is proper but it is tagged the same as common noun.

@JourneymanGeek thanks. No backlight here, used to having my pinky on control key

Bob
@cpx Orange is also proper in certain contexts
There's a lowercase orange/SMP later

cpx
Ah.

MySpell is the spell checker that was formerly included with OOo Writer of the free OpenOffice.org office suite. Since version 2.0.2, OpenOffice.org has replaced MySpell with Hunspell. == Background == MySpell was started by Kevin Hendricks to integrate various open-source spelling checkers into the OpenOffice.org build. With a little prodding from Kevin Atkinson, the author of Pspell and Aspell, a new spelling checker (MySpell) was written in C++ that supported affix compression, based on Ispell. == Locale (language) files == Every locale (language for a specific territory) can have files for...
Hunspell is a spell checker and morphological analyzer designed for languages with rich morphology and complex word compounding and character encoding, originally designed for the Hungarian language. maybe they stopped adding it at some point :\

This was my first SSD ever and was meant to be kept as keepsake. Not dead keepsake but a working one!

@Burgi Morning. Your car park saga turned out OK then as you clearly survived going home ...

yeah they all disappeared after the last drug deal
and it is a lot cooler and damper today so it is unlikely that we will get the same saga today

@Psycogeek Which one is you there?
@Psycogeek Doesn't make sense because I didn't stress it. Used only for office tasks. SMART said everything is fine (last time I checked)

8:04 AM
@Boris_yo take it apart and look ? not like it is filled with helium :-) how many years old was it? I (myself) always thought SSDs should have the Controller chip so it heatsinks to the outside of the case. I think one company has done that so far. I mean really did anyone think when they wrapped these things up in a case with no air holes?
Half this stuff was designed in california, i am assuming in a AirConditioned room :-) stuff it in a poorly cooled laptop, and . . . did anybody think?
it is ~100*F here in Ca this week. half the stuff they designed wouldnt work outside this week.

@Psycogeek Yeah I wonder. Why no air inlets whatsoever? Did anyone noticed this too? Was this discussed in internet SSD forums?

I cooked my phone battery, and hurt it real good. Sitting on my well designed GPS mount with air gap. the GPS 3D maps really take power, then in CA you cant have it on the windshield, which means it sits on the hot dash. I should have paid more attention as it was cooking. I even have both temps on the home screen.

@Psycogeek Ouch

8:20 AM
@Psycogeek It's 32c here in my room which is not proper temperature for SSD cooking.
I doubt it was cooked. Cloning process took place 3 times. Before Windows 10 upgrade and 2 times after. First time after it mentioned "bad sector" and second time it cloned successfully.
I really could run SMART at that time...

How old was it?
ya do have to figure that cloning or syncing huge data or any flat-out just filling the drive, is harder on it than added a few things here and there, or running things out of it. sooo there is much work going on, but they should all handle it.

@Psycogeek 8/20/12
With 3-year warranty...
o.0
I should have crushed it with hammer weeks before 8/20/15 ...
Just to use that warranty to see how they put their mouth where money is.
Or they put their money where their mouth is?

if you remember the "sandforce" fiasco, more than a few people attributed the fails of them to the controller chip itself dying. During that time it was when SSD reached the 500m/s speed. one could say that the new technology was untested.

@bob the uefi update seems to be only for WIndows OS

@Psycogeek Even if Samsung is TLC, Intel is MLC drive. Is controller more important?

8:31 AM
@Boris_yo the only place they put thier money is in the lawyers mouth anymore so they can write a warrenty that doesnt mean anything to the consumer. Had it died 2 weeks before the warrenty ran out, they would "Pro-Rate" it hand you $3 and say that covers it :-)
@Boris_yo I do not know for sure, Thermal pictures (that probably exist) would show. on things of that type, only the power curcuit stuff, and the controller for all I/O are the heat "problem".

@Psycogeek Didn't know there are cooling solutions for SSDs. Are there really?
And where do you get Helium? The only place I know of is too far from earth... riddick.wikia.com/wiki/Helion_Prime
Should be combined with unobtainium for bullet proof data carrying.

when parts of a drive , say a block of nand, or the alogrythms for wear leveling, or the power conversion (that should not be needed on that) starts getting dirty, these things always Show as a drive (existing) that is failing.
When the drive no longer shows up even, which is most of the SSD fails (so far), it proabably is the microcontroller. The one that could have had a cooling method.

@Sathya thanks.
@Boris_yo easus is Chinese too
@Boris_yo wakanda oil wells.

@Boris_yo No it is completely unnessisary to extra cool a SSD. They should work fine without it for real. I just believe they could address it, and have happier curcuits.

@Psycogeek ow. I hope it's not bloated?

8:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Whichever came last, they cloned former's interface!

@Boris_yo or it's the same software.

@JourneymanGeek it is not, but it has lowered in capacity holding. (has to be charged more) It is zerolemon and aged enough. problem is (as always) a replacement battery for an older model, might be older too, last on the shelf etc.

Ah. So dying not dead.

smart thing for me to do with my old phone, is to finnaly update the phone ;-( But i am so happy with it, and it is soo customised for weeks, and it works 99% great.
I could even get one of those Evil 2 Year contracts with the POS phone company, because everyone loves them, so it is good to throw them roses and money :-)

@JourneymanGeek You mean they acquired resellin license for it?

9:00 AM
Donno. Or they're the same company, or one stole it from the other or.....

@JourneymanGeek Replica. What China can best do.

Q: Exact hour of Windows 10 free upgrade period end

prediEverywhere I look I see "the free update period ends on July 29th". Well, okay. Would that be on July 29th, 00:00:00 GMT+0, July 29th, 23:59:59 GMT+0 or some other obscure time? Even Microsoft's FAQ page only states the date, not the hour. What is the exact time (within one hour error margin) of...

wut.
there's no reason that matters, other than being weird.

is there a limit to the number of subdomains i can have?

@Burgi I don't think so, especially if you run the dns for it.

thats what i was thinking

@djsmiley2k I miss the too localised close reason. Would be perfect here

@Rahul2001 agreed ;)

@Burgi What is it this time?

never mind...

simple one, partially my fault

10:00 AM
Pro tip: never buy one of these
The USB portion always breaks off...
This is the third flash drive I'm seeing which broke off from the exactly same place

@Rahul2001 I have a retractable sandisk

@DavidPostill Those have metal connectors, so they don't break

Bob
I have 20 of those :P
Was some $3.50 ea
@Sathya What makes you think that?
iirc they often come with a .exe extension that can be loaded straight from the firmware (via a flash drive)

Yeah, but I have a big one :) 64 GB lots more $$$

Bob
10:06 AM
lol
@DavidPostill USB 3.0, I hope? :P
I have a few... PNY and a nice all-metal ADATA one

@Bob Good question. What's the easy way to tell?
@Bob It's an old one - USB 2.0

@DavidPostill we host landing pages for email campaigns but they aren't logically hosted on the same server or in the same location

@bob ^

some of them were returning 404 because they were on the server i turned off because it was hacked

@Burgi oops :)

10:16 AM
the lack of documentation meant i wasn't to know
the account managers are the ones that send the email campaigns

meh not your fault then

they didn't check it last night when they scheduled the emails
i know

Unless you're the documentor

still my fault for turning off the server
shrugs
@djsmiley2k i'm doing documentation for everything now

Bob
10:22 AM
@DavidPostill Benchmark? USB 3.0 is usually blue :P (the plastic bit inside the plug)
@DavidPostill ach
any idea what the speeds are like?
some 2.0 drives can still get pretty fast
@Sathya Apparently you can run it from winpe: forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-B-and-G-Series-Notebooks/…
so if you have a windows install usb that would work
otherwise you can build winpe pretty easily if you have a windows machine somewhere

oh and i missed the htaccess file from a WP site

Bob
@Sathya if you want to go the pe route, lemme know

Any options to fix bricked SSD?

10:38 AM
@Boris_yo restore from backup :/

@JourneymanGeek Please nuke my previous post
@Bob

@Bob thanks for this, will try to do this.

cat
@Burgi Turning off a compromised server isn't anyone's "fault"
2

Bob
@DavidPostill Huh, that's pretty good for USB 2.0

@djsmiley2k And then SSD will fix itself so I won't need to spend money on a new one?

Bob
10:40 AM
Faster than some 3.0 drives

cat
That's like jailing a criminal... it was my fault for reporting him to the police!
God dammit it's gonna rain on my bike again isn't it
Time to buy a rain cover. Amazon Prime here I come!

@cat that isn't the way the account managers see it

If it's not raining it's probably snowing :P

apparently i should have known instinctively

A: How can I recover dead SSD drives?

AstravagrantI haven't tried this solution myself, but quite a few articles on the web are referring to over-heating the SSD (in the oven!) to somehow rejuvenate them. http://www.futurelooks.com/cooking-your-solid-state-drive-in-an-oven-might-make-them-last-longer/ http://ales.io/2014/03/09/how-to-bake-a-ma...

As a last resort?

cpx
What? I thought when an SSD fails, the data becomes read-only and you cannot write to it. But it should be possible to read and copy data from it.

Bob
@cpx nah, most controllers just give up entirely and die

10:53 AM
I doubt it becomes read-only when I smash it with a hammer

@Burgi deep fried doughnuts dipped in batter and fried?

Then again, putting it in the oven after that is also unlikely to help

cpx
Ah, right when controller dies nothing can be done.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg well, you can't write to it anymore can you?

@JourneymanGeek exactly

cat
10:54 AM
@cpx That's maybe how they theoretically should work in an ideal world but in practice only 1 in 10 actually does that

Shout back at them that you can't magically pull a non-existent backup out your backside

they also refused to order a new server on friday so we had to wait all day yesterday for it to be built
