Apparently WPF does do the automatic marshalling (according to some SO answer), but I have no bloody clue what WinForms does other than occasionally throwing some cryptic error -_-
Create DataGridView => bind to a BindingList<Model> where Model implements INotifyPropertyChanged. Update one of the model instance's properties from a worker thread. Somehow this usually works, until boom error.
And the exception is automatically handled by the DGV and displayed as a popup so I can't even get a full stack trace and it's not logged -_-

@Bob despite lack of WPF support in Mono, I've been coding .NET UIs exclusively in WPF lately
I'm hopeful that the open source .NET effort will yield a WPF implementation that runs on non-Windows

Bob
@allquixotic I haven't had the time to familiarise myself with it.

if you assume OpenGL 2.1 is available, you should be able to write a WPF backend for it
and seriously, who runs X without OpenGL 2.1 anymore?

Bob
@allquixotic Even the WPF one is incomplete.

?
"one"?

A: Does databinding always marshal to the UI thread?

Lucian WischikI did some experiments... INotifyPropertyChanged If you make a change to a property from a background thread, and it fires INotifyPropertyChanged from that background thread, and the property is databound, then... WPF: it works (i.e. the databinder marshals it to the UI thread) Silverlight5 a...

What I eventually did => stackoverflow.com/a/27517521/1030702
It feels so hackish feeding in a sync context to a static property :S
@allquixotic Also, after the recent runaround while fiddling with sizes and canvases and paths... I'm not sure I'll like WPF much :\

@Bob for me, WPF is excellent for simple UIs, but if you try to make it too fancy, the complexity does increase quite significantly.
I try not to overcomplicate things
generally I limit my desktop GUI design complexity to things you can do in HTML4.1 Forms without JavaScript (except for pressing buttons obviously)

Bob
@allquixotic I was trying to render an icon -_-

@Bob heh
I remember doing that successfully, but it was a slight struggle

Bob
I had an XAML file (resource string).
I wanted an Image to insert in a WinForms ToolStripButton.
Simple enough, yea? Use WPF to render the XAML, and save the result as an image. I mean, it's just a couple of API calls.
And it was pretty easy. Took under 30 mins with pretty much zero WPF experience.

heh

Bob
4:13 PM
...I spent the next half a day trying to get the damn thing to resize the icon to fit within smaller dimensions.

unrelated / new Thread(): I'm of the understanding that within January 2015, a NEW work laptop (not government equip) will be requisitioned and provided to me... a ThinkPad T-series with a Haswell processor, 8 GiB of RAM and an SSD. I thanked the guy who volunteered to put in the req SOOOO MUCH lol
from Neh @ 2 GiB RAM --> Has @ 8 GiB will feel godlike

I don't think the new laptop will have an eSATA port, so I'll have to use my external SSD via the USB 3.0 interface (I was wise enough to buy a 2.5" enclosure that can do both USB3 and eSATA)

Bob
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll enjoy your Celeron N2820 with 3 GB of RAM and a 64 GB SSD.

lol wat
actually, it's highly unlikely that I'll get anything like that -- definitely not Bay Trail -- the laptop supply chain within my company is EXTREMELY standardized and streamlined
the "previous-gen" laptops are the Dell beaters I have; the "current-gen" laptops are refreshed every 18 months with the latest available Lenovo T-series, the 15" I think
they mostly go with the base model but they add in enterprisey optionals
but they don't up the RAM or CPU

Bob
4:19 PM
Oh, you know the filtering they were planning here?

@Bob what?

Bob
Apparently it came down from corporate. As in, the owning company.
Our local admin is arguing against it :P

what is the proposed filtering? how strict?

Bob
Pretty sure he'll turn a blind eye to anything slightly weird.
@allquixotic Don't know the details yet, just know they want to filter our web access :\
<=== spending hours searching for and reading obscure blog posts might as well be in my job description

eh, I'll happily generate a keypair with my server's root CA that stunnel trusts, so you can TLS -> SSH -> SOCKS5 like I do :P

Bob
4:22 PM
@allquixotic We already have port filtering. Can only connect to 80 and 443 :\

> TLS

Bob
I could (probably should) set up something like that on my own machine.

1. Request the local HTTP Proxy to establish a TLS socket to tiyukquellmalz.org:443 (stunnel client does HTTP emulation)
2. Authenticate with client and server cert verification
3. Run SSH over arcfour within the TLS tunnel to create a SOCKS5 proxy on localhost

Bob
o.O

4. SOCKS5 native support in web browser (and a few other things) is the first half of the wide-open tunnel; running a proxifier takes care of the rest (RDP, etc)

Bob
4:23 PM
arcfour?
RC4?

yeah, I use RC4 crypto on the SSH session because it's the most efficient crypto algorithm, and the tunnel is already encrypted
I guess I could use none, but SSH really, really complains about that, even if it's to "localhost"

Bob
lol

@Bob sounds useful, but my current work network uplink is network-bound (and not due to the protocol inefficiency, just because it's slow), not CPU-bound, when doing file transfers over this setup I have.

Bob
ah

downloading ~186 MB Eclipse zip took 3 hours over the regular (NOT proxied to my server, just straight through IE 9) connection.

Bob
4:27 PM
Yea, if you're CPU-bound with AES on a modern machine (AES-NI), you must have a crazy fast network.
@allquixotic O_O
I think it took me half an hour last time. Maybe a bit more.

Q: Why does copying files from one partition to another of the same disk take time?

sonneApplying my general understanding if partitioning is done within the same physical hard drive, copying data from one partition to another should involve only changing indexes to where the GUI representation of files leads, yet we observe a lengthy copying process?

Geez i hope not. I hope they do not ever start deciding to just link stuff inside the os or the Hard disk , based on what partition it is percived to be on. Yea create one more disaster , They will :-)

@Psycogeek I think I nailed it...

It might also be pointed out that not only is it actually copying the data from one place to another, it is way slower than copying it to a different hardware disk item, cause of the I-While-O

True...

Q: Quick Way To 'Hide' or Encrypt Several Terabytes Of Data?

RobDudeI'm trying to adopt some best-practices (or at least less-bad-practices) with my external data storage. I'm looking for a way to quickly provide some minimal level of protection from prying eyes for ~4tb of data (2tb of data mirrored on two external drives). The kicker here is that I will frequ...

10 minutes , better go with the hide option :-)

I agree... But still, they need to know better

Many years ago when a pick-up truck was easily stolen by pulling a few wires and connecting them, some person would put a switch in , that just isnt known to be there. Cool trick would be to put a reed switch in an external encasement, that disconnects one wire, and makes a person think (at first) that the drive is not even functional. Putting your special magnet in the right spot and your porn is all ready to go again
Then dont post it on instructables :-) so everyone knows what trick was used.

great. I can drive to where the blimp will be moored, in like, 20 minutes

6:24 PM
$1.4 billion , heck the hindenburg didnt cost that much
For that price it should come with AroGel balistic armour
It is probably just a recruiting mechanism :-) With a "be all you can be" jumbotron showing on the side. or "army of 1"billion$

Brr. Using windows 8.1 for the first time.
Blloody userinterface. Where is my [start] [run] ?

@Hennes Right here or here. I'm a little amazed you don't know about that yet. While yes, it is inconvenient to have to click 3 or 4 times in the installer to get back to the Windows 7 UI, that inconvenience is outweighed by the underlying driver improvements, and the "leanification" of Windows that allows it to more closely compete with Android without being as much of a boat anchor.
a lot of the core APIs and libraries were refactored to have their perf improved and worthless layers of abstraction removed.
Windows Vista was like taking the design for a full-size sedan with a V8 engine and shrinking it down to a compact sedan, but *keeping* the overpowered V8 engine (even making it MORE powerful), and not improving the fuel efficiency.

Windows 7 was shrinking that V8 to a V6.

Windows 8/8.1 was shrinking the compact sedan to a 2-door, and making it a plug-in hybrid with a small displacement 4-cylinder.

My previous windows 8 (or 8.1) experience was about 40 minutes (Twice 20 minutes after which I ran away in terror).
MY regular way of starting is via [run].

8:10 PM
@allquixotic What exactally is leaner? the final removal of the 214 drivers that have been obsolete for 15 years now? the disposal of more originating features people learned to use? or the idea that now you can go to the store and Buy $$$$ things that used to come with it? I heard the kernel is only a teeny bit smaller than it was.

The darn laptop came with tons of bloatware. Decrapping it takes a while.

@Hennes blame the OEM

8:57 PM
Doesn't Microsoft offer a version of laptops without OEM bloat?

9:35 PM
BIOS's
bioses?
if one were to attempt to modify settings in a proprietary bios
Cpu multiplier
FSB
IGP GPU Core clock
Where does one start?
For the "unhackable"

I started by drilling holes into the CPU and connecting a few wires and a resistor.

10:01 PM
diddnt work.

@Hennes Look for Microsoft Signature Edition

Bob
10:13 PM
@Hennes Win+R
It's a bit weird to use the Run dialog and rely on the mouse to access it :P

uh, right. This laptop has a windows key
<--- To used to older keyboards without it

Bob
Even if you did rely on the menu, you could right click on the start icon and choose Run from there

Ah. Still learning this newfangled thing which immitaes an OS
That escalated quickly: Cats, dogs, Hitler

@TardisGuy see first if the softclocking software is compatable with it

hmm...
There must be a way to mine the PLL
not that I have a clue.

10:25 PM
sleep.
waves

10:42 PM
@Hennes You know of [Windows]+[X] for the admin menu?

11:01 PM
allquixotic is indeed correct in his description of Vista/Windows 7/ect.
Microsoft has spent a great deal of time making the kernel more stable by making it more modular.
I think I will go see the Interview when i am Italy since the Sony decided not to release it
Bah@
doesn't come out until Jan 15 in Italy
not that Icould understand it in italian lol
Here I was looking forward walking into the movie, with my conceal permit, WWGWBD

@CanadianLuke No result found
@CanadianLuke The Gods of Wikipedia did not bless us

@Ramhound Same with the US, apparently... theverge.com/2014/12/17/7412393/…

so goes the "we will not negotiate with terrorists"
(but we will roll over and insure that nobody gets hurt)

Every country says that... But they'll still want to "protect" their citizens

Send the teamsters after them, tell em they are scabs

11:22 PM
Reminds me of the South Park episodes, 200 and 201
... But with Muhammad, I mean

Warning
We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places "The Interview" be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.
Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear.
(Is this from hackers or a 13yr old with a keyboard?)
Remember the 11th of September 2001.
We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.
(If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)
Homeland security is not sure they would carry out such threat, but they have some newly opened spots in Guantonimo for them anyway.

I know it'll be leaked somewhere anyways... I'm not worried

11:49 PM
Oooh, I broke 30K SU rep! Just noticed.
Merry Christmas to me.
