12:00 AM
so if one wanted to be very technical.. given that the definition is different for a hostname of a windows computer and a hostname in the DNS spec. And I accept that DNS can deal with Windows computer hostnames. But what's the system for managing windows hostnames called?

Bob
@barlop Does there even need to be such a system?
Does it need a name?
Once upon a time, there was WINS and NetBIOS.
Those are (or should be) long dead.
Now? I suppose AD can do some of that.
But AD itself doesn't provide for lookups to clients. It integrates with a DNS server, IIRC.
So there's a bit of a merging there.

You say long since dead but this is a screenshot from a win7 machine properties of a LAN adaptor

Bob
While a "computer name" on Windows may not technically be defined as a DNS hostname, it's still used as such, by Microsoft themselves.
@barlop "should be"

Note WINS and NetBIOS get a mention in that pic from win7

Bob
It's been deprecated for well over a decade.
Even at the time of Win7 release, it was nearly a decade.
Microsoft keeps backwards compatibility for quite a while...

12:02 AM
but it's used isn't it, judging by that page there, that screenshot?

Bob
There's a guy on SF who had NT4 machines running in a domain with Win2k8 and maybe even Win2k12.
@barlop It's usable, I suppose.

;p
Poor dude.

Bob
The components are there.

Hi English-language readers! This blog post is not for you; perhaps you’d like a hat instead? No? Well, when last we spoke of creating non-English versions of Stack Overflow, some of you were certain we should’ve gone the easy route and just leveraged a machine translation service instead of creating real sites for real people to use. I humbly invite you to read the rest of this post using the mechanical babelfish of your choice, and see if you think such tools can be relied on for important work… …

@JourneymanGeek do you ever use slitaz for servers? i've noticed that the openssh on slitaz isn't the latest one
it's like 5.9 and the latest one is 6 point something.

12:11 AM
nope
My servers are all on Ubuntu, tho I may start playing with a fedora server install soon

Bob
@barlop Normally servers go with something widely supported and very stable.
So most-lightweight isn't too big a concern, and most-recent-version isn't either.
RHEL/CentOS, Debian. Rock solid, but older versions.
Cutting edge... Fedora, Debian unstable (sid), Ubuntu, etc.. Generally not recommended for anything important.

would that be rock solid old versions of OS, but latest version of server?
or rock solid older version of both?

Bob
@barlop They pick something stable at the time of release, and lock it in for 5+ years.
Only security patches, usually.
So if you grabbed the current RHEL, you'd be almost up to date. The previous version is still supported and will be for a long time, but will have older versions of the included software.
You can update the software, if you need to, but you need to pick special repos, or compile manually.
Unlike cutting-edge OSes, they won't pull in feature updates every time you update.

@Bob: Ubuntu LTS is fairly stable IMO

12:36 AM
Anybody here have bad experiences with RaLink / Dynamode WLAN USB adaptor?
I got two adaptors.. one named dynamode, the other not.. but clearly they're both made by the same company.. And both had some driver issue
i'm wondering what a good make of adaptor is
maybe toshiba ;-)

Bob
eww ralink
Intel is good

12:51 AM
I've had decent luck with ralink usb keys
don't use the OEM drivers, use the latest ralink drivers off the ralink/mediatek site

1:02 AM
I can't really find an intel wireless usb

Bob
@barlop they mostly do internal adapters

well what'd you use for a laptop?

Intel, without a doubt

As I say, I can't find an intel wireless usb adaptor

Ralink is fine for me ;p

1:14 AM
not me!

Did you use the official drivers?

i'm sure I did
and i'm not overly keen on trying again (with those ralinks) because the problems i've had with them have been intermittent

then its wierd ;p
I've used everything from old belkin ones, right down to a dx branded nano

Hm, havent used a USB adapter in a long time... Surprised my motherboards wireless module hasnt failed yet, its held together with tape

lol
I've never trusted wireless

1:18 AM
Me neither.
I've just simply been forced into it
At one point I was bridging two wireless routers :p
Which was, well, really ugly

hmm.. How about a big device converted into wireless client mode, that might be reliable
like a device marketted as wireless router, if it has a wireless client mode
I guess only thing is they don't do it over usb

@barlop I used DD-WRT to bridge two routers so I could have a wired connection :p
Speed was actually fairly good

bridging two routers wirelessly?
how wired is that?!

It was pretty radical

so everything else wired. but a big chunk of wireless in the middle

1:21 AM
Effectively yes

probably better off with mains over ethernet, if really wanting wired over a distance

Because I wanted faster speeds between two devices that sat beside each other :p

err.. ethernet over mains

but were nowhere near our router
Because I wanted faster speeds between two devices that sat beside each other :p

mains over ethernet sounds dangerous ;p
I do homeplug ;p

1:23 AM
hehe
linksys does some wireless usb it seems

using ralink chips, more likely than not

1:35 AM
I am not a big fan of athereos either

I've sort of had good luck with wireless drivers, always :p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You have Win10 on VBox, right?
Ever tried RDP with it?

Bob
:\

I just fire it up for screenshots at the moment ;p

Bob
1:38 AM
Lessee... apparently VBox's own RDP is bloody worthless, since it doesn't work with 3D-accelerated guests.
WIn10's RDP doesn't play nice either.
On a host-only network, it just. won't. connect.
On a port-forwarded/NAT network, it never finishes the connection attempt.
I'm out of ideas :\

Jeez
I guess thats the early-adoption/test struggles :p

lol
I don't do host only either
bridged or bust

Bob
I'm more inclined to think it's just VBox being stupid as usual.
Win10 is more stable than VBox.
@JourneymanGeek Work network.

Oh, speaking of which

Bob
I could bridge it, but I get the feeling the admin might not be too happy with me.

1:41 AM
I have a kandan chat instance up if anyone wants to muck with it
home.lupinenet.com:3000
Its running off a KVM VM inside my network ;p

got my Samsung Evo 840 SSD delivered yesterday

Ahh nice!

got it at good price - 250GB at $109

Makes sense
the 850s are coming out now, and they probably want to clear stock
I have the older 840, its a great drive

@JourneymanGeek sports center , dog , must have something to do with ball :-)
If dogs arent loving balls they are licking them

8:11 AM
That's a stereotype.
(Actually pondering budgeting for an 850, and getting the 840 in my laptop)

well, I can't afford SSD pricing in India

Hello.

Well, my SSD was a prize from SE ;p

and 840 is known to be good, so couldn't resist :P

(ended up paying... 5 dollars for shipping)
It is!

@JourneymanGeek ah, anniversary celebrations?

Yup ;p
er
Windows 8 contest
no

Can anyone tell me real quick what security permissions the Windows and System32 folders ought to have by default?

Actually, probably a much more useful prize than the surfaces.

Or rather, can you tell me if Users is supposed to be among these, at least?

8:18 AM
One moment!

@Hamster yes, I see that on my AD-connected system

@Sathya Alright, thanks

That's system32

Bob
@Sathya It's actually known to have a serious bug.

@Bob oh?

Bob
8:19 AM
Over extended use speed slows quite a lot.

I thought it was fixed?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek There's a firmware patch, yes.
But apparently that's more of a workaround.

Also, what about C:/ProgramData? I'm just going to assume Powershell should not have Everyone, for sure

You mean program files?

na, ProgramData

Bob
8:21 AM
@Hamster ...if the permissions were stuffed, I'd say don't bother trying to manually repair.

I don't see it.

hidden, system

Bob
Some locations, like %SystemRoot%/System32/config are far more secure than their surroundings.
@JourneymanGeek You call yourself a geek?!

I don't want to unhide it to check.

8:21 AM
@Bob What would you suggest?

@Bob: I don't root around on windows as much ;p

Bob
@Hamster Normally? Once permissions are stuffed to this extent, restore from backup or full reinstall.

Oh joy.

@Hamster users is there for ProgramData, not 'Everyone'
@JourneymanGeek I did that :P

Bob
e.g. quite a few subdirs and individual files are TrustedInstaller only.

8:22 AM
;p

Bob
And more are SYSTEM only.

I don't want to stuff my system

Bob
You might be able to script it - go through and clone permissions from a known good source.

@Bob hm, I see

well...
I have a shiny, new untested backup system....

Bob
8:23 AM
But then you also run into more issues with lower-level filesystem stuff (ADSes, junction points/hard links...)
@Hamster You can try to pull bits back together, and for a single-user home machine it isn't majorly important, but it leave a bad aftertaste...
(I'm currently on a system struggling along with an utterly broken driver store that I haven't found the time to reinstall yet.)

I think restore might be my best option.
Noticing bits of weirdness in many places, I should just assume it's unfixable.
Files being copied around even when I'm not on a network, etc.

Bob
@Hamster Yay! Someone actually has backups for once! :P
@Hamster ...that is very weird.
How did this happen?

I've known the computer was infected for a month or so, but I figured I could clean it with Malwarebytes, COMODO, and some old fashion cleanup

... Its infected?
Nuke it from orbit
3
Its the only way to be sure.

One of the more obvious infection signs was a service called Browser Enhacer Service (or something like that... it had that typo for sure)

Bob
8:32 AM
@Hamster Tip: cancel credit cards (or watch very carefully), change passwords everywhere...

8:54 AM
@Bob Heh, I hope I'll be able to.

9:10 AM
Alright, another question: In C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0 tell me if Powershell.exe is supposed to allow admins to have full permissions or not

9:21 AM
@Hamster: read + execute and read

Bob
@Hamster At this point you might as well consider the entire thing compromised.
Forget permissions, if it replaces a core system file then you're dealing with a rootkit that runs with full privs anyway.

in fact, you may not need a cgi-bin directory at all.
@HackToHell In case. Could be faster for all you know ;p

@JourneymanGeek I don't have Monty Python scripts anyway for CGI. I may even delete that folder for domain where I host Wordpress website.

Kevin ChristinaAfter I get up, I start up my computer(windows 7) as usual. When I enter my password, it showed blue screen then it showed the enter password page again, after I enter the password, it showed blue screen again. Repeat and repeat. What I should do ?

Q: How can I roll my own Game Streaming Box with Amazon EC2?

From security and convenience perspectives, when website owner has presence in social networks, YouTube and other platforms which all do require registration, does he register with his website's email i.e. sales@mywebsite.com or he uses free public email like Outlook or Gmail?

@allquixotic: I wonder if steam would do

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not if you need Android.

I know there are aliases but what if I want to make sure successful receipt of emails and no potential problems with aliases that free email provides?

Bob
1:41 PM
I was going to suggest it, but he used and :P

Bob
Steam is supposed to only allow local-network streaming, but OVPN TAP will take care of that.

I'm not sure if you can consider chrome remote usable
Its fairly low latency but its a pain to control on a touch screen

Bob
Heh. RDP can get about 4FPS on a local network.
I've tried watching videos on it.
I've tried running CS1.6 on it...

I can get reasonable quality on Chrome Remote Desktop
Its fast

How about GRID?

I have MAJOR issues with mouse controls on my phone since it does this weird relative movement thing, when absolute movement makes sense
and OH
I know of someone who uses remotefx for gaming with ugly ugly hax

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...relative movement?
I like the mouse control with RDClient.

@Boris_yo one uses his spam e-mail for everything except transactions of great value and money and all. or they could spread thier more important e-mails around the web until it is no longer a usable address via the spam it gets. Just depends, it might be legit spamming itself (of your website) to use your domain name in everything you can. I cant see that helping at the usual web locations though. Give it to Customers, and people with money :-)

You can either move the cursor as in a touchpad, or use touch directly.

@Bob: this is as a touchpad, rather than directly. Its ugly

@Bob others are pretty much the same as that.. I might have tripped serial downvote indicator on his profile ;/

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, I actually rather like that mode.

@Bob: That's a little shooting a fish in a packed barrel

Bob
It's painful trying to touch accurately on a phone screen.

1:47 PM
@Bob: Its annoying for me
@allquixotic: ^ see that question ;p

@Psycogeek If I register with services where I have credits purchased or Facebook account that is popular and that level stuff, is there risk in domain email being compromised? (JustHost cheap hosting, WordPress)

Bob
Using it as a touchpad (swiping to position the cursor) is far more accurate, if somewhat slower.

@Boris_yo well so far everyone has gotten compromised at one time or another everybody has handed out 10 million addresses :-) but high secure money transaction locations (say paypal for example) have way more to lose by getting thier data hacked or disguntled employee nuked, or whatever .

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ok, that is weird.

@Bob: Its a touchscreen. I can't tap on things
That's wierd

Bob
1:52 PM
@JourneymanGeek Think of it as a touchpad. Problem solved.
I'd rather that than mistapping a dozen times -_-

BUT I CAN SEE THINGS.

@Boris_yo Sales@ and Support@ and other important e-mail names that could be used at a domain could be reserved for those things. But couldnt you have 50 other addresses @thatDomain that are disposable when needed? Or even throwaway addresses (g-mail hotmail) that include the name of the domain in the e-mail name. Oh wait ? I do, i have 8 addresses that are versions of my business name.

Bob
(speaking from experience. trying to use Windows desktop rendered at 1920x1080 on a 5" screen with the same DPI settings as on a 24" monitor is ridiculous)
Huh, did they improve markdown rendering in chat? te---st---
nope.
@JourneymanGeek Again, accuracy.
I actually find Windows tablets tend to be far more accurate than Android ones with touch :\

I like having the option
Don't forget I have shitty monitors
and in some cases, it would be fine to run a lower res for remote access purposes.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh, sure, I have the option. I just end up doing pretty much everything in relative because it's more accurate.
Don't really want to be fucking up by mis-tapping while trying to make emergency fixes to a critical server while on the train -_-

1:58 PM
;p
If I'm doing emergency fixes... text/SSH ;p

Bob
And there I found a use for MUI in Server2012.

@Psycogeek With free email service or domain-hosted?

Bob
Still feels stupid, but there's actually a use for it! :O
@JourneymanGeek Windows Server.

true. ;p

@Boris_yo I dont have a domain. the ISP gives me 6-7 e-mail addresses alone, then there are the free ones too. back many years , i was able to snag 3 letter abreviations on the business name, and the whole business name, and partials and stuff ,before anyone else got those names.

2:06 PM
@Psycogeek Email names or domain names?

Anyone have a recommendation to convert PDFs to word and word to PDFs?

@Boris_yo e-mail names, i do not have a domain (other than where my dog pees that is a domain :-)

@Psycogeek Back then you could also grab domain names that you wanted without endless futile tries. Today even hyphens do not help.

@Boris_yo Yea that too
@Boris_yo and if you make a website without a catchey or easily typed and remembered name, people are going to forget it a lot easier.

@Psycogeek You mean domain name with SEO in mind ;)?
Are you aware of these new extensions? They did not exist 2 years back I think: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

2:13 PM
@Boris_yo ahh not search, just human memory. what if say E-bay was called ElliotsForgoneGoodies , or amzon was called AmazonWomenOfTheBahamas.com

@Psycogeek But if you want Google, you need to balance between SEO and human memory.

Good luck typing that in an address bar correct everytime.

:D

Sure, when drones will replace humans they will appreciate these types of websites designed with droids in mind.

Bob
@ekaj PDF to Word is not generally doable.
Word to PDF - simply use the built-in save functionality.
PDF describes a page layout, but is often used to contain images of text (e.g. scans).

@Bob Select all, copy, paste. Or OCR.

2:17 PM
@Boris_yo Google doesnt cover much of the web you know, what are the present numbers for them? search engines nowdays should be called HotSiteWatch.

@Bob Zamzar can also help.

Bob
If you just wanted whole-page images in Word, that would work, but you won't get a truly editable document.
@ThatBrazilianGuy OCR is far from perfect, and will likely also lose positioning information.

@Bob Someone's boss said "we have to provide this info in PDF. It's mandatory". So said someone asked me how to save hundreds JPGs of scanned pages embedded in a PDF file.
I tried to explaind the difference between text-PDF and image-PDF. Useless.

@Psycogeek How is it that their discount implies inflated price as regular if regular price is less in their pricing?

@Boris_yo say what? I hope those are royalty fees, paying $1 for a picture download seems a bit steep. heck you can get 30,000 porn pics for less than $30 :-)

Haha. Royalty Free for life but credits expire within 1 year.

I am saying that their scarcity discount claims to discount 60% of credits required for 1 image and when I tried to download image that according to regular pricing costs 5 credits, discount had 10 credits in strikethrough and implying I can now buy for 5 creidts (their regular pricing)

2:45 PM
@Boris_yo ok , just sounds like the usual "jack up the price, offer a discount or sale" because everyone likes to think they are getting a deal. Did you think you were going to get a deal? Then it worked :-)

@Psycogeek This happens sometimes in life... What a jacks!

good dGPU probably costs more
