@Bob why so expensive? no Prime subscription? :P
o rite. you live on Mars

Bob
.

!! s/Mars/Oceania (same thing)/

@allquixotic o rite. you live on Oceania (same thing) (source)

Bob
it'd probably be cheaper on Mars

lol

Bob
3:03 PM
gah

> Your Amazon.com order of "XFX RADEON Double D R9 280X..." has shipped!
!!yes

Bob
I'm going through my massive game list and I can't find anything to play :(

@allquixotic: "Double D" ?
2
lol

@Bob back in the cable TV years before the internet, we had a saying: "54 channels and nothing on"

3:04 PM
I have the opposite issue XD

@JourneymanGeek it doubles as a bra

@allquixotic: oh I thought I knew thee!

a bra with VCE... now that's chic
dem TFLOPS

Bob
I'm no longer sure if I'm on RA or TCR
oh wait we're still somewhat subtle, definitely not TCR

@Bob play Dawngate... I've already cleared out all the bad players so you should get carried :D

Bob
3:06 PM
Incidentally, I might finally be getting 4G next month
@allquixotic On my laptop right now.

@allquixotic You have a 7970 o0 ?

@Bob awesome! so you can use up your minuscule data plan in about 3.5 seconds, right? :)
@HackToHell yep :)
Star Citizen needs MOAR JUICE
going to CF them

Bob
@allquixotic ...:S
My new cap will be... 1.5 GB

@Bob that's terrible -_-

@allquixotic it needs more than a 7970 :O ? wtf

Bob
3:07 PM
> 1800 MHZ and 2300 MHz

Bob
@allquixotic For $18/month, it's not too bad.

@HackToHell for good FPS, yes
the "recommended" sys requirements is the R9 290X, but two older cards in CF should work just as well

Bob
@JourneymanGeek When'd you go to Mexico? O_O

@HackToHell: To quote Jeremy Clarkson. MORE SPEED. MOOOOOAAARRSPEEEEEDDDDD!

3:08 PM
@JourneymanGeek MOARRRRRRRR POWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

@Bob: Probably one of the international terrierati

Bob
I wonder how good the coverage will be at ~2000 MHz

@Bob 1800 MHz is fine. really. it'll be good.

(we keep running into dogs that look alike.)

considerably more building penetration than WiFi

Bob
3:09 PM
@allquixotic But not as good as 700 MHz? :P

We tend to joke there's a secret society of terriers around

@Bob shh. I don't want to totally discourage you

Bob
XD

oh, mobile?
Should be fine

Bob
I'm not really doing this for the 4G, though.

3:10 PM
/me is glad he has the second biggest data cap here, though its 3g

@JourneymanGeek yeah, well, he's only got a 1.5 GB data plan, so he'll barely be able to use it :(

Bob
Might even switch my phone back down to 3G to conserve power. Speed's not really an issue.

@Bob I think they mostly fixed the power issues with LTE chipsets now

Bob
The only reason I'm switching is cause my current carrier is kicking people off the old plans :\

3:10 PM
the first gen were brutal (see: HTC Thunderbolt)

Bob
@allquixotic Including the S4?

@Bob ya

I only hit 1gb now cause of google play music and boring bus rides to the army

according to Verizon I'm using "88.912GB/UNLMTD" of my data for this month

Bob
@allquixotic Hopefully you can stay on that plan longer than I did on mine :P

3:12 PM
@Bob been on it since, 2007 I think? well. technically we had to get "new" plans to upgrade from 3G to 4G, but they kept the unlimited part of it when the upgrade occurred

Bob
It would cost me... $85/month for 10GB
On the crappiest carrier.
@allquixotic Nice.

nice
I can't switch plans :/

Bob
My (soon-to-be-former) carrier discontinued the 1GB data plans about a month after I started. They're now 100MB.

I get busted down to 1gb if I want 4g

Bob
That was half a year ago. Now they're forcing people on the old plans to move to lower-data/higher-cost plans.
@JourneymanGeek How much are you paying?

3:15 PM
@allquixotic The game needs improvement >.<

@Bob: ~50 dollars a month

@JourneymanGeek LOL

Bob
heh, the $85/month one is only cause of a current double data promotion

though
"Data bill capped at $85.60/month"
which is a nice thing they do here
though the cap was lower before

@Bob wat? why are they reducing plan capacity? that's insanity

Bob
3:18 PM
@allquixotic You don't say?

@HackToHell it's a super high fidelity game.
(and currently in pre-alpha, so not optimized)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I think we got to the point where we seriously considered data via SMS as being cheaper :S

@Bob heh, our regular (non-double) data plans cost about $85 for 10 GB... but we have a double data promo going on this summer for $85 for 20 GB
and that's the folks who are unfortunate enough not to have unlimited data like me
@Bob no, I don't think the SMS way was cheaper at all, remember it was like $17,600 per GB?
the cheaper way would be to LZMA2 the entire data channel and interface with a remote box :P
or even PPMd it
for greater compression ratios you could even do traffic analysis, detect HTTP streams that are gzipped, ungzip them, then LZMA2 them
LZMA2 can do a better job with the raw data than with the gzipped data, even though it can actually reduce the size of most gzip streams

Bob
@allquixotic Compress images.
Lossy compression.
scroll down to the table
They only updated that in the last month or so.
In 2014.
Ridiculous.

3:28 PM
@Bob updated by how much?

Bob
@allquixotic The page was deleted...

oh, I see
is unmetered 10 Mbps still $190,344 over 2 years?

Bob
But that was the page just last month.
@allquixotic I wouldn't be surprised.
It's Telstra.

that's nearly $8000 per month!
man, that company is evil
makes EA look like a Carebear

Bob
The new page doesn't have pricing details, but it does mention:
> Dedicated high bandwidth - connection speeds to customer sites range from 10Mbits to 10Gbits for point-to-point services and 10Mbits to 1Gbits for point-to-multipoint services
I'm afraid to ask what 1Gbit/s would cost.

3:30 PM
it's probably "call to request a quote" type expensive

Bob
@allquixotic And $8k/month isn't?!?!
And we wondered why they were suddenly so sure their fucking copper is all fucking fine and we didn't need FTTP any more.

WTF, it's $2151 per month for "regional", 10 Mbps, 100 GB capacity... I don't even... I get 30 Mbps uncapped for like $90/month (factoring in all kinds of different fees and such)

Bob
Now I know.

don't get me wrong, Verizon is still twisted evil, but Verizon Wireless at least seems to be... I mean, for their long-time customers, they're not that evil
Telstra however, needs to be wiped off the face of the earth
no one would miss them

@allquixotic: corp customers do have specific needs though

3:36 PM
actually, they can stay on the face of the earth if they want to -- provided they allow for genuine competition within their territories

like promised five nines reliability, and so on

if you guys had a choice between Telstra and 5 other carriers which had independent networks and were equally as reliable, I guarantee you the price war would be on, and you wouldn't be paying out the nose like that

they're generally more expensive, just not ... australia, tap dancing with spider filled shoes...

there isn't much competition here, but I suspect one reason I still have unlimited plan is that Verizon doesn't want to surrender my business to AT&T or T-Mobile

@allquixotic: wouldn't even need to be independant, just not owned by a carrier.

3:37 PM
because if they ever cancel my unlimited, no way I'm staying with Verizon

Bob
> Ethernet ATM uses Telstra’s robust and reliable ATM network. It’s the leading ATM service in Australia, providing businesses with cheaper access to a proven network. And because we‘ve been operating commercial ATM services since 1997, we have the experience you can depend on.
Looks like their prices haven't been updated since 1997 either.

lol
@JourneymanGeek very true

Bob
@JourneymanGeek five nines?
> Unlike typical internet-grade DSL products where customers share a connection-based platform, Ethernet Lite delivers dedicated End User Access and Individual Service for each of your end-users. The Target Service Availability for Ethernet Lite (BDSL) has been increased from 99.6% to 99.8%.
Try two and a half.

but then I've seen "business" services have all kinds of issues frequently, just as frequently as residential

@allquixotic Uh huh

Bob
3:39 PM
They can't even make three nines.
Granted, the "Ethernet Lite" is not the same as the "Ethernet Line", and definitely less reliable.

Bob
But they don't even mention any guaranteed percentage for the latter.

@Bob it's probably "one five" SLA :P

Bob

wat?
@Bob I don't get it.
is that B supposed to be Bing?

Bob
3:43 PM
@allquixotic Watching the world cup. Manager/supervisor walks past.

oh ROFL

Bob
@allquixotic Apparently "Boss"

Nice :)

I get caught on RA all the time :P
4

Same here
I explain it how I fixed the computers, then they say OK!

3:48 PM
@Bob lol

we need to adapt a Kinect to be a boss key

yes

look at the kinect and blink -> display graph/code/whatever

@allquixotic That's dumb ?

Bob
@allquixotic Then you have to be careful to not blink while your boss is talking to you :P

3:49 PM
@Bob not a toggle
goes straight to "work" and not back

Dude, you can set the Kinect to recognize people... Get it to recognize him as he's coming down the hall and automatically switch!

@HackToHell not really. I often have my hands off my keyboard. do you realize how long it takes to go from tapping on my phone to alt-tabbing or so without looking like i'm rushing to hide my screen? :P
@CanadianLuke my "hall" doesn't work that way

@allquixotic Hehe I have mastered the art of subtle alt tabbing

the entire right side of my desk is exposed to the hall with no wall, and anyone can walk up from either in front of me or behind me and look at my screens

That sucks

3:53 PM
in fact with my headphones on, someone can completely blindside me from behind

to make matters worse, 180 degrees from the direction I face while looking at the screen, there is a small opening between a large structural support pole (goes from the floor to the roof) and the back of my cube wall, and someone could easily peek in on my screen from there and I'd never notice them

same for me. I've jokes about adding a rear view mirror ;p

@allquixotic If your hall doesn't work that way, you need to get a new job!

@JourneymanGeek I had a rear-view mirror in my old office, but we moved (downgraded) to a worse office with much smaller cubes, worse facilities and kitchen areas, and less cube privacy

3:55 PM
... I got an office...?

the rear view mirror would be ineffective now
@CanadianLuke school IT is an exception -- you aren't in a cube farm; you get your own workspace because the school is laid out with an antiquated design
but yes, I really fucking need a new job
I don't get paid nearly enough for what I do
and the things I do aren't even up to my full potential

on the spectrum from 0 (disgruntled / ready to go rogue) to 10 (you have the best job on Earth) I feel like I'm somewhere in the 1-3 range

my 'office' has my mom's wardrobe in it ;p
/me does love his desk though

Possibly :)

4:05 PM
Not really :(

my desk is bigger, but thats roughly my room

hi guys, i asked about it like 2-3 weeks ago... so, we live in an apartment and we share wi-fi connection... like 5 people... but the thing is that one guy is selfish and is downloading via torrents etc... so it means that i have a very slow connection ... the speed is like 5 Mbit/s for all of us but I only have a speed of 500 Kbit/s
so it looks like he is downloading something at a speed of 4 Mbit/s or so... other people either sleep or are not downloading anything... so my question is if it is possible to make sure that i have a speed of at least 1 Mbit/s and he can have 3.5 Mbit/s.... so that i can watch TV that is streamed or do other things and the connection is a little bit faster... THANK YOU!!!

you beat him with a stick.
3
;p

maybe he goes go jail
he killed 2 cats
should i go to police and report it?
its gonna be funny....

4:10 PM
(or you look up QOS, or maybe some more sophisticated traffic shaping)

QOS FTMFW BRO

@EinsteinsGrandson definitely -- but make sure animal cruelty is illegal in your country first (I don't know the law there)

it is
we will see
so far there are other people who don't let him sleep
it's karma

best solution is to get the guy removed from your apartment and put in jail :) then you can have good wifi again

4:23 PM
he's a mean guy... so karma kicks him in the ass

that's better than QoS even :)

we will see
he is finding a pretext to kick me out
but now, since i know what he did... he is going to be nice...
;o)
i hope he is not chatting here
;o)))
in this room
or some of his friends
;o)

You need to slap him with a white glove
and accuse him of impertiance

so who of you guys come from a town which name starts with A ?
;o)

then challenge him to a duel.

4:25 PM
;-)
he is a pussy
he is just pretending
i think he's mentally ill
his mood changes all the time
anyway... he is an asshole...
everybody in the apartment is behaving like a normal person
except him
but karma definitely works
i have seen it now.... it was bad luck that he had to kill those cats
and that other people found out about it
you behave like an asshole to somebody... it will catch you
sooner or later it will...

cats are wonderful creatures, they don't deserve to be treated like that

so in USA... when i kill a cat... do i go to jail?
or in countries where you live...

yup
and I suspect a caning
All life deserves dignity.

and sapients deserve special treatment too

4:41 PM
sapients ?
what does it mean?
;-)

Wisdom is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense, and insight. Wisdom has been regarded as one of four cardinal virtues; and as a virtue, it is a habit or disposition to perform the action with the highest degree of adequacy under any given circumstance. This implies a possession of knowledge or the seeking thereof in order to apply it to the given circumstance. This involves an understanding of people, things, events, situations, and the willingness as well as the ability to apply perception, judgement, and action in keeping with the unders...

Sentience is the ability to feel, perceive, or to experience subjectivity. Eighteenth-century philosophers used the concept to distinguish the ability to think (reason) from the ability to feel (sentience). In modern Western philosophy, sentience is the ability to experience sensations (known in philosophy of mind as "qualia"). The concept is central to the philosophy of animal rights, because sentience is necessary for the ability to suffer, which is held to entail certain rights. Philosophy and sentience In the philosophy of consciousness, sentience can refer to the ability of any en...
@JourneymanGeek > Eastern religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism recognize non-humans as sentient beings. In Jainism and Hinduism, this is closely related to the concept of ahimsa, nonviolence toward other beings.
there is a remarkable amount of real science in support of this view

5:02 PM
Google API is down O__o
... for me

5:25 PM
Yay?

5:36 PM
Dude, get a proxy! That would work too, at least for you!

@CanadianLuke Dude! You're getting a proxy! (Dell commercial reference)
(then the proxy arrives in a huge box)

Haven't seen that commerical... I only watch TV online

6:05 PM
I have a really quick question... Long story short, I'm trying to determine if an i5-4210U would be an "apparently" faster processor than a Pentium T3400.
The latter is the processor I had on my old computer (now dead-ish), and the former is one on a computer I'm considering purchasing. My intuition tells me that the newer processor should appear to be faster, given that the newer processor has a larger cache size and has more threads.
What's throwing me off is that the old one has a higher clock speed. I don't know how much weight to place on this... :\ I am, in general, quite good with computers; I feel like I'm missing something obvious here...

@anorton clock speed is meaningless when comparing different CPU microarchitectures
comparing a Haswell to a Haswell, you can say objectively that the one with the higher clock rate is faster
assuming they have the same number of cores
but the T3400 is part of a platform that still uses the front side bus, so you're looking at completely different technology platforms
from the passmark scores, it would seem the i5-4210U is about 3.5x faster in a blended score of various benchmarks
some of that will come from newer instruction sets; some of that will come from faster RAM; some of that will come from using DMI 2.0 as the CPU interface instead of the slow FSB
the 4210U has a very low TDP so it's not going to be extraordinarily fast compared to a full-scale desktop processor of the same generation, but compared to that Pentium, there's just no way the Pentium is faster
even if the Pentium happened to be faster at some specific microbenchmark (which in itself is unlikely), the latency reductions in the architecture as a result of eliminating the FSB; the improved branch prediction in the new architecture; and the better SIMD instructions; should provide a much smoother desktop experience overall

That's very helpful, thanks! For some reason, the "higher clock speed = faster" mentality is hard to shake. :) Seeing the benchmarks next to each other is quite convincing.

that's why they call computer hardware that's older than 5 years obsolete -- things continue to plow along at a steady pace, such that, even a very "high-end" chip from 5 years ago is handily beaten by a cheap, low-power current-gen chip
Merom vs Haswell is like comparing the Ford Model T to a 2014 Chevy Volt

@allquixotic FORD = Found On Road Dead

ok. I probably won't be using software that's too trying for the processor anyway... I'm buying the computer for college, and my major is CS (I promise I'm good with computers in the software side; I still have a ways to go on the hardware side, I think)--I figure that the most processor-intensive application I'll be using is Visual Studio 2014.
err... 2013? (I forget the year number...)

6:18 PM
@anorton 2013 :P

:)

a modern i5 will be more than sufficient for coding and web surfing
also worth mentioning is that you seem to have missed that the turbo boost cpu freq for the i5-4210U is higher than the cpu freq for the T4300; so even though comparing their two CPU freqs isn't very meaningful, the 4210U can actually exceed the T4300's freq by a significant margin if there's enough of a thermal profile available (and battery, if it's a lappy)

What do they mean by "turbo boost?" Is that something that can be sustained (assuming thermal profile and battery), or is it something that is only meant for 1-5 second bursts?

@anorton turbo boost can be sustained under ideal thermal and power conditions, if the CPU determines that it is needed
it's automatic and managed by the PCH and the CPU itself so you don't have to do anything special to enable it

Ok. That's good to know. (For some reason, I was categorizing it in the same genre as overclocking... which is obviously not automatic. :) )

6:22 PM
something like a C compiler could definitely trigger a turbo boost, though it would probably be primarily disk-bound so you may not even see it kicking in there
most compiles are not limited by CPU speed anymore but I/O speed, so unless you have one hell of a fast SSD, you won't be maxing your CPU on the compile
at work I have a Sandy Bridge era i3-2100 on a full-scale desktop, I use the system for web browsing, MS Office, coding, testing, etc. and its passmark rating is about 50 points off from your 4210U, even though it's two generations older (Haswell -> Ivy -> Sandy)
so your Haswell Ultra-Low-Volt (that's what the "U" stands for) is about as fast as a mid-range full-scale desktop processor from 2010-2011
the i3-2100 uses a lot more power and is a larger, hotter chip so of course it would compete with the newer but lower voltage proc... but the T4300 is also a mobile chip, and you're comparing a very old mobile chip -- a pre-Nehalem mobile chip -- with a current-gen mobile chip... the current-gen one absolutely obliterates it

Well, it makes me very happy to hear that; I was worried about the i5 being slow, but now I have a much better grasp on why you can't look only to clock speed to determine "fastness." :)

for reference, the i3-2100 uses 4.3 times more energy at 100% utilization than the i5-4210U... and they're essentially equal in performance

I'm going to have to run; thank you very much for your help!

@anorton these days, to determine how fast a chip is, you look at the Thermal Design Power (TDP), combined with its number of cores, combined with its microarchitecture generation
np

@allquixotic It's great that I won him, as I've been playing him heaps and he's about to go out of the free rotation. :)

8:03 PM
@MichaelFrank nice
I still don't know how to get good momentum with Desecrator. His Q ability is way too telegraphed; it very rarely hits unless the enemy is right up in your grill
It's not very useful as a long range poke even though it has a very long range
Useful for killing minions, but desecrator usually doesn't get the opportunity to go gladiator, so you don't want to kill minions

Q: Do I need a more powerful video card?

jamaussI have 3 Dell U3014 Monitors (30 inch screens). The max/recommended resolution for these monitors is 2560x1600. I have all 3 plugged into the same video card - a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870. I'm using both of the DVI ports and a DisplayPort to DVI adapter so all 3 monitors have DVI (dual link) cable...

@allquixotic I find it works much better if you can chain it with your E ability.
Root them, then knock them up with the stun, get a couple hits in and then get out.

Does this guy need a more powefull video card or One More video card? he is trying to run 3 monitors (thats easy) But at the High res 2560x1600.
Never thought about it but the Specs for these video cards have max resolution (for each screen), but not the max total possible resolution of this super screen.

Whale, whale, whale... this will suit me nicely for my PowerPoint presentations with those nice animations in them

That's a.. pretty bold upgrade Microsoft is throwing at you

They want your data. Period.

8:52 PM
they know the average user only uses 2-3g , so they oversell it like an airline ? fatal marketing error if 1 million people call them on it and actually use it.

@OliverSalzburg Or maybe... You could make the PowerPoint into an animation!

@Psycogeek Joke's on them! cat /dev/zero > ~/OneDrive/lol.dat

@allquixotic If a person used 80g of mobile data on ATT in a month att.com/shop/wireless/plans/mobileshare.html it would cost around $825 for that month.
(without some other arrangements)

@Psycogeek o_O

yea people arent teathering mobile phones to PCs around here anymore.

except if they have unlimited :P

9:29 PM
If anyone had such a thing anymore they would pay thier bill early :-) just in case someone noticed :-)

@Psycogeek I have "such a thing".
it's called grandfathered unlimited

If it was ATT (the bastards) it would only be , Sliped through the books unnoticed unlimited. (because the right hand doesnt know what the left hand is doing kind of thing).
On verizon they have awesome (share) plans like 10 GB data for only $160
8gig for only $80 a month, with the same $15 per gig overages. $1200 for 80 gig overage.
Oh , there was more behind the button.
50 GB
$335/mo
About the same as ATT.

Based on a mid-range estimate, the world’s Information-Communications-Technologies (ICT) ecosystem uses about 1,500 TWh of electricity annually, equal to all the electric generation of Japan and Germany combined — as much electricity as was used for global illumination in 1985. The ICT ecosystem now approaches 10% of world electricity generation.
10% of the electricity, and probably 20-30% of the overall entertainment and information and time. It really does not sound that bad. When people used to blow twice that energy out by driving clear across the country just for fun. Now they can do that without leaving a desk.

Alright guys, worked on two blog posts today. I should have them published by the end of the week (just need to do some tweaking!)
