@Daniel she passed away some time back

Hmm. Last 3 questions from superuser.com/users/686020/user686020
You have now asked 3 overly broad questions asking for software and a list of causes/symptoms. None of them are suitable questions for SU. — DavidPostill 2 mins ago

@DavidPostill feels like the questions are identical

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, motherboard/ram/hard disk. Next stop displays?
I wonder if he is planning on setting up a computer repair business ...

Q: How safe to keep it ON?

user686020In my desktop computer; motherboard is Asus M5A97, SMPS is Cooler Master GX650W, Processor is AMD FX-8320, RAM is HyperX Fury 16GB and OS is Windows 10. And my desktop is connected with UPS which is APC 600VA. In general, after turning off Windows, I turn off UPS as well. For last 2-3 days, I j...

ah
this sounds like someone who seems to think his hardware is a delicate snowflake

I want to downvote them all but that would be naughty :)

11:21 PM
Maybe Its cause I'm a first worlder but I've run consumer systems 24/7 for years with no issues
only reason my desktop gets switched off at night is the lights

@JourneymanGeek I just sleep my laptop if I'm asleep :)

Oh, desktop, fan lights, now I also have very bright bias lighting, keyboard lights up.....

@JourneymanGeek In the same room where you sleep?

11:35 PM
so quick question about minions and how to keep them engaged with admin tasks

@JourneymanGeek: you have are a dog, so please explain that to me:
(I know dogs do that, as I've experienced it firsthand, it's just... WHY?!)

hey howd you get pictures of my dog :-) just Gimme THe D-MN Ball

how do i stop my minion from wandering off and not doing admin tasks?

"HERE'S THIS BALL. THROW ME THE BALL. OH I'M NOT LETTING YOU TAKE IT".

yes clippy, i would like help with that...

11:38 PM
@Burgi Tie him to his chair. Hmm, no the Humane Minion Society will complain.
Hire a sexy single minionnette. ;p

i want him to focus!

@Burgi do it for them Very Obviously badly, everytime they do not. do it in front of them badly, then say Im An Expert, and You dont know what your doing.. They will get ticked off push you away and do it themselves :-)

that sounds like the worst possible strategy

> They will get ticked off push you away and do it themselves get evidence of your authorship and wash their hands

well you training minions to fend for themselves, or want to clean up after them for the rest of your life?

11:40 PM
@Psycogeek Wait, so that's why today I received an .svg with 400 KB and multiple png images inside?!
They wanted me to do it right myself?
Because.... they succeeded! O_o

hey wait minions are not supposed to know how it works :-)
such is why all Bosses are Inept.

@Burgi Handcuff him to his chair? :)

chair is on wheels, all it'll do is slow him down
we are a bit light on frontend work at the moment but i have loads of backend and adminy type stuff that needs doing

@Burgi I'm sure there is a Pavlov's Dogs solution to the problem ...
Involving electric shocks ... :)

LOL
i like it

11:47 PM
@Burgi what is Crazy, is that Your doing it while you have a chance? Whats wrong with you. it is time to enjoy the lull and pay for it later.

A cattle prod, also called a stock prod, is a handheld device commonly used to make cattle or other livestock move by striking or poking them. An electric cattle prod is a stick with electrodes on the end which is used to make cattle move through a relatively high-voltage, low-current electric shock The electric cattle prod is said to have been invented by Texas cattle baron Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. of the King Ranch around 1930, although versions were sold as early as 1917. == Terminology differences == Ranchers and farmers typically use the term "cattle prods" mainly to refer to simple n...

> Ah, but then a magical thing happened. The new mac OS unzipped its pants and stuck its balls on my face and said "ALL YOUR PROGRAMS DON'T WORK ANYMORE! HAHAHA, NOW YOU HAVE TO BUY NEW EDITIONS THROUGH THE PROPRIETARY APP STORE!" So they finally fucked up so bad that it was cheaper for me to switch to a windows computer and buy all new software for it.
@allquixotic you use a mac, right? Is that even remotely true? ---^

What's he gonna do when MS does the same thing?

@Psycogeek heh, my bad ;)

@Burgi Hire me for half... damn, for 1/3rd his pay.
I promise to be a really behaved minion

11:49 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy sadly that would make it illegal in the UK

@ThatBrazilianGuy possessiveness, tug of war....
@Burgi eh. that's part of what a good manager does
You need to figure out what kind of simple positive reinforcement works

That's why I'm never going to be a manager, human programming is really hard!
@Burgi You guys don't use Drupal, by any chance?

humans keep getting upgrades

@ThatBrazilianGuy no
badly built umbraco and hacked together wordpress

/me enters in a bag and writes "UK" on it.
....wait. I should've written on the bag before I entered it. Damn.

11:52 PM
with a light dusting of custom obsolete code

Bob
@JourneymanGeek wait, how was the bias lighting powered again?

@Bob tapped from the power supply
I'm apparently not supposed to use the term 'ghetto' cause its politically incorrect, but it does involve lots of jerryrigging.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek wait. were you actually told not to? o.O

Bob
GHM :(
@JourneymanGeek 5V or 12V?

11:55 PM
I kid. Someone raised a fuss, and there was an edit war...
12V

Bob
@JourneymanGeek sigh.
@JourneymanGeek ah. was thinking why not USB :P
you could still splice a switch in?

for example we have a ton of contact forms spread out across all our sites that use a 3rd party forwarding service. however it was used on ex-customer sites and not removed before they left us

Bob
I still want to do something with a microcontroller, but I don't have anything I want to do :\

we are paying for thousands of forwarded emails
the simple fix is that we change the password for the forwarding service

@Bob I considered it

11:58 PM
but the access details are hardcoded into every form

there's actually cheapish. USB powered ones
and you can get a 5v -> 12v converter fairly cheap

its the perfect minion job
