Bob
1:00 PM
@WilliamHilsum any luck?

@JourneymanGeek I know a lot of people who can't even communicate via text, or face to face, or any other way either
uhoh @TomWijsman is here
damn i didn't expect VBox to grind this system to a halt :/
is it worth changing it's priority in task manager?
windows, plz be realtime

it must be tough dating people like adele or taylor swift
all their songs are about how bad their previous relationship was

@Bob couldn't figure out how to use it!

yeah
xD

and then had a few emails come in :(

1:13 PM
@Burgi listening to the guy from breaking bad read little mix lyrics from that song about an ex was lols

i love the new euphemism that trump's people used this morning on the radio
> Alternative Facts

ffs I can't run resource monitor without admin?
something is hammering my disk causing sloooooow but i don't know what

the interviewer was all "WTF?????? Alternative Facts are lies!"

lol
Ah the joys of redefining words to fit what you mean

and the whitehouse press person was "that is your interpretation of it"
i was stunned

1:17 PM
God Help Them.
:D

i was sat in the car staring at the radio

So the Alternative Alternative fact is that Alterative facts are lies?
:)

possibly

And when they say 'nooo'
you go 'That is your interpretation of it'
Boom, mathmatic'd b****!

Bob
@WilliamHilsum want a step-by-step? :P
I'll be busy for ~1-2 hours though

1:21 PM
@Bob it has been open since you went and did nothing... just looked back and a bit more info...
haha, I'm a quick learner, just never used it!
I think I know the issue... possibly...

Bob
@HackToHell added screenshots

if you want... don't worry if busy...

Bob
@WilliamHilsum downloaded clients make me feel iffy :P

Don't worry then!

Bob
one sec, firing up VM

1:23 PM
I bought this as I was fed up of teamviewer... and getting paid for support/it felt cheap... just a shame it doesn't have a html client or something... other than that, it is a really good remote support tool

heh I've used it with other clients tbh
how much it cost you?

screenconnect?
got it on legacy pricing... bought before the connectwise takeover, so, about $300 I think
then hardly anything / about $60 a year renewal.. (off the top of my head)

Bob
o.O
that's pretty pricey unless you use remote access stuff a lot :P
I wonder how Windows Remote Assistance is these days

lol, look at teamviewer! it is dirt cheap...
but, I use it a hell of a lot... all my clients are on it, single click to connect in...

Bob
@WilliamHilsum I'm in... but at a glance you already have it!
Ya that's an nvidia driver

1:26 PM
just wonder why it no longer says it on the BSOD, or in blue screen view...
just going to try to look at the other crashes...

Bob
@WilliamHilsum I've found that happens fairly often... seems the quick analysis can't dig into ntoskrnl, probably because of missing symbols.
So they just stop there and say that's the cause.

ahh
and, I feel like such a noob, can't clear/reopen! lol

Bob
@WilliamHilsum I normally just reopen windbg entirely! :P

Bob
I only know how to use it for minor bsod diagnoses
judging by SE chat, there's something like 5s lag on this connection :P
but not sure I can help further - you've found the cause
now the trick is fixing it...
first port of call is completely uninstalling nvidia drivers and installing fresh/updated ones

1:29 PM
its the latest version, and, my friend with the same card/driver doesn't have the issue...

Bob
if that doesn't work... I'd begin to suspect the hardware of possibly being faulty, but tbh there's any number of odd interactions that could be the cause

I'm thinking I may just reinstall windows...

Why have you deleted your account? Doing so means we can't @comment reply to you ... — DavidPostill 32 secs ago

Bob
it could be other software/drivers conflicting
ok, time to hop out of that session and reset the VM :P

heh, i wouldn't give anyone viruses! but, better safe than sorry...
second one shows this :

Bob
1:31 PM
@WilliamHilsum yea, I trust you, but I tend to be a bit iffy about these remote access sites/clients :P

no worries! I understand

Bob
@WilliamHilsum any chance you can copy/paste the text?
if you hit ctrl+k after pasting it'll even format it nicely :P

@WilliamHilsum could you grab the whole thing? bits above and below too

WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124)
A fatal hardware error has occurred. Parameter 1 identifies the type of error

Bob
1:33 PM
uh oh.
@WilliamHilsum if you want to dig more, you're going to want to dump ffffce0322a00028
heck if I can remember how to do that, though

I've been doing so much sysadmin work over the past couple of years, I feel out of the loop of these... I feel like such a moron that I can't do this myself!!! Thanks so much... well, so much further than I was...

Bob
@WilliamHilsum this is pretty definitely some kind of hardware issue
easiest thing to test would be RAM
run memtest86+ overnight :P
or... @WilliamHilsum how often does this happen?
if it's really rare/random, then it'll be a real pain

it can be 2/3 times a few minutes apart, then, nothing for days

Bob
gotta go, bbl

Bob
1:36 PM
@WilliamHilsum imo, try the memtest first, then maybe try pulling the video card and see if it stops happening
short of starting to replace parts, it's pretty much remove things till it works again :P
@WilliamHilsum tbf usually when a sysadmin is faced with a bsod the easiest thing to do is call vendor support :P
well, a bsod reporting a hardware error anyway

I need to go out at 3, I know not scientific, but, I can give it about 4 hours...
I "did" have bad memory...
had 4x 8gb sticks and 2 were faulty, so, I took them out and I had a clear memtest run about 2 years ago...
I haven't run since...

Bob
@WilliamHilsum usually I (unscientifically) recommend 10, maybe 20 test passes before considering RAM "probably good"
because I've seen detections crop up on the 11th pass
but memory errors can be really random
failing hardware is never fun :(

me too... on 30th run for one client... took like 2 days, I left it on over the weekend and came back to an error... replaced and all good...

Bob
@WilliamHilsum try this
> You can use !errrec <addr> to display the WHEA_ERROR_RECORD structure using the address provided in Parameter 2. The !whea and !errpkt extensions can be used to display additional WHEA information.

ALTERNATIVE FACTS!!!!!!!

@djsmiley2k I thought that's normal ;p

Bob
@WilliamHilsum also read through this blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/ntdebugging/2011/01/28/…
> Error : Internal timer (Proc 7 Bank 4)
ow

@djsmiley2k @JourneymanGeek communicates by smell

@Burgi >_>

Bob
1:43 PM
@WilliamHilsum oh, you have an unlocked CPU... any overclocking?

got a k cpu, no overclocking

Bob
it could be the CPU on its way out :(

It's been on 24x7 since I got it... so, ehh... maybe, but annoying!

Bob
but they might want you to test on a different machine/mobo first :\

1:44 PM
also, used internal graphics quite a bit - so, maybe gpu strains it? :/
I'm an intel platinum tech partner... meant to get express warranty/support... I'll just ask my account manager... see what they say
wonder if I should try updating bios/firmware/efi first... don't think I have ever done that... just in case

Bob
@WilliamHilsum maybe, yea
I'd still do the memtest, personally, but this doesn't smell good :(

we need an image macro for alternative facts

@Burgi politics :(

I'm just wondering if my first thought - heat/power could still be relevant.. e.g. overheating and not doing what it should (but, I would guess that it would turn off before going funny)... or wrong voltage, but, would expect a warning on restart

1:48 PM
@djsmiley2k I actually spent about 2 years practically as a shutin, with no online or offline social interaction
I still have a little arkwardness in real life

@JourneymanGeek is it still banned? i thought that was just friday

@Burgi it isn't explicitly banned
but politics is just so... dreary

but i have so many alternative facts to share!

(this show might possibly be older than some of the folk here ;p)

@JourneymanGeek lol. I be rewatching season 1 at the moment :)

1:52 PM
hm, 1997, 1998.... so, yeah, totally is
this is pretty late. I think 3 or 4
Anyone who wants a spoiler warning needs to get off my lawn, by the way

@JourneymanGeek I'll get to it eventually - I'm watching everything in order, including all the movies :)

@JourneymanGeek I've seen them all before several times ...

I usually skip the movies when I binge watch them

Except the movies.

1:54 PM
ah!

i seriously dislike B5

@Burgi why?

well for a start they have a character named after a biscuit

>_>
two words

!!/slap @burgi

1:55 PM
Kit Fisto

then the bad acting and terrible production

"terrible production"
You do realise this is a 90s scifi show right?

there is cheap and then there is B5

@Burgi farscape has obviously styrofoam blocks for destroyed buildings.

similar era shows had MUCH better acting and better production

1:57 PM
I think you might have stopped at season 1
The one where the lead actor was literally losing his mind the entire time

i watched until the galactic war thing

dude. Gkar and Londo!
Better love story than twilight!
(they end up strangling each other. To save londo from a mind controlling alien trying to destroy the goodguys)
Anyway, I respect your dislike of the show ;p
I'll leave it at that.

i gave it a good go
if they remade it with better acting, direction and production i'd watch it

You might get your wish ;p
though they want to remake it into a movie

that sounds like a bad idea

2:01 PM
and part of the appeal of b5 was that it was essentially a single long arc from S1 to S4
S5 was odd. They assumed the series would be cancelled so they crammed that plot into s4, so s5 had a meh A plot, and brilliant individual episodes

i struggled to care about the characters
especially biscuit guy

(who is biscuit guy?)

.....
I'm not sure what to say
cause I'm pretty sure, in good bad sci fi tradition, the ganked the name from an actual historic figure
Giuseppe Garibaldi (Italian: [dʒuˈzɛppe ɡariˈbaldi]; 4 July 1807 in Nice – 2 June 1882 on Caprera) was an Italian general, politician and nationalist who played a large role in the history of Italy. He is considered, with Camillo Cavour, Victor Emmanuel II and Giuseppe Mazzini, as one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland". Garibaldi was a central figure in the Italian Risorgimento, since he personally commanded and fought in many military campaigns that led eventually to the formation of a unified Italy. He was appointed general by the provisional government of Milan in 1848, General of the Roman...

i know that NOW

2:06 PM
Okay, another (4th reason) why I want upgrade Nexus 4. Camera.

i didn't when i watched it in the late noughties

lol
Battletech was terrible about that.

From what I can tell iPhone is on par with Nokia camera quality-wise. Then who takes 3rd place? Samsung galaxy?

i think it was on channel 4 in the UK during the 90s but at weird times (late in the evening)

Entirely relatedly to the current conversation imgur.com/gallery/N8wza
oh god. Local TV would show all the sci fi shows at sat 4pm for half a season
then suddenly switch it to weekday late nights.

2:08 PM
where as the BBC showed star trek at 6pm
6pm on a weekday
it was star trek, followed by buffy
then fridays at 6pm it was thunderbirds

rofl ubuntu you so bad
why when I installed the desktop version did files upload as my desktop user
but with the 'server' version, they upload as www-data?!
and that's then broke the phpexcel lib too, yey

2:25 PM
yeah
awesome!! thumbs
up

2:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek You tell me...
@JourneymanGeek There's a great solution to that: the mute button.
"Oh TBG why aren't you on the 'zapzap' group"
"No, auntie, I am, see?"
"Oh that's great"

@ThatBrazilianGuy that's what I do
and then my mom complains about her siblings so I know what's happening anyway

Anything I need to know my wife will tell me anyway

but I was refering to, yanno
chat etiquette

LOL we said pretty much the same thing
@JourneymanGeek Oh don't even start me with that

That's kinda the point I was trying to make ;p

2:51 PM
When I was in the previous team at work, one of my random-tasks-that-came-from-who-knows-where were tutoring random final users, "normal people", from all across the organization
I did it the first time, was accordingly paid
Then, the second time they asked me to do that, they were "oh, you have to take a course on Moodle Tutoring so we can certify you and then pay you".
The "Moodle tutoring" course was held... via moodle. [>_<]"
99.999999% of the users were "normal people", non-techies, who apparently had zero previous experience with online communities, web interfaces and nettiquete of any kind.
The forum part was.... OMIGODPLEASEKILLME messy, let's say.

The whole thing was a torture.

I mean, contrast this place to tech IRC

Instead of a single "classroom", they artificially split the forums into groups of 10 persons.

we arn't as busy, but there's a certain amount of community culture that keeps things sane
eww

2:55 PM
There was pre-approved threads that we had to post into.
There was not a "one subject, one thread" mentality.

Rather, "this thread is for class B-3".
AND THEN EVERYTHING THREW IN THERE AND SHAKE A LITTLE
People would post replies as level-1 posts
and new messages as random replies

i remember at uni, the system meant that replies got 5-10px slimmer than the previous post

Nothing made sense.

que us doing 100's of replies on a post until it disappeared up it's own .... ;)

2:57 PM
I tried to use logic arguments to the course creators... To no avail.

Today said person works on the same office as me
And we constantly interact
She's a really nice person, but technologically... well...

que stabbing?
obv. not murder
we don't talk about that here, but mental stabbing?

@djsmiley2k ¿Qué Stabbing?

I installed Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" - MATE. :)

3:01 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy queue... cue!
CUE!

Perhaps it brings something good.
This distro comes with xed.

@djsmiley2k maybe a nice gift in their shoes?
stabbing sounds... antisocial, and impolite.
2

@JourneymanGeek I guess that's what Julius Ceaser felt at the end of his play, "oh boy, these men are very impolite". Impolite, good description there.

@Nick what could be more so. One moment you're all imperator and shit, and the next thing you know BAM, MOMENTO MORI!
and you get a terminal case of iron poisoning.

who was talking about 000webhost the other day?
they got pwned to the sound of 13 million creds?

3:10 PM
pretty much

what do you mean -> what happened to them?

> 000webhost: In approximately March 2015, the free web hosting provider 000webhost suffered a major data breach that exposed over 13 million customer records. The data was sold and traded before 000webhost was alerted in October. The breach included names, email addresses and plain text passwords.

Compromised data: Email addresses, IP addresses, Names, Passwords

@ThatBrazilianGuy Geez, they're like the go to place for people with no wallets to host stuff.

';--have i been pwned?

Check if you have an account that has been compromised in a data breach
> Oh no — pwned!

Pwned on 8 breached sites and found 1 paste (subscribe to search sensitive breaches)
-.-'

3:39 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy "Good news — no pwnage found!"

ah one last step of my sync process to build

Hmm. Why isn't xkcd oneboxing?

almost done..exciting

Hmm, others work

it's ALIVE.

@djsmiley2k I've been for quite some time, it seems.

hehe
it made it work
now to load it with the huge spreadsheet
Awww, ran outta memory
(unsupprisingly)

4:45 PM
so it has this built in caching to disk mechnism, that I can't make work now :/

5:30 PM
*after almost a year in exile, Daniel himself returns to SuperUser*

@Daniel Wat? You last asked a question on Nov 9 '16, that'snowhere near a year! :)

I haven't been active hardly at all though

@Daniel Why did you exile yourself anyway?

I just got busy with school and work and shit

Ah. OK. Welcome back ;p

5:34 PM
Thanks XD
I'm gonna be building a new rig soon and I'm wondering if I should do i7-4790K or a Xeon...

I don't know much about hardware but I'm sure some of our regulars will chime in when they are online ...

yep
ping @Bob

@Daniel and @JourneymanGeek and @Dog (but @Dog won't see my ping because he has ignored me ...)
And @allquixotic. That's most of the H/W guru regulars :)

Also @TheBrownOne if she's still around

@Daniel Never heard of her ...

5:40 PM
Maybe I'm thinking of a different chatroom
Yeah I think she's from AskUbuntu

it's ALIVE
it takes over 850Mb to process, but it works \o/
I wish I knew hardware
but time, and keeping up with th trends, is hard

@djsmiley2k I used to back in the days of the IBM PC and XT machines :)

6:04 PM
urgh
users
randomly corrliating events to get causation

6:21 PM
Have you tried pointing them to relevant information pages ?

lol

@DavidPostill Somewhat apt these days...
Every day seems to be another reason to say "Wasn't it better when..."

All those iphones today; We never had so many neonazi's before we had those.
Slighly more relevant than global warming and the lack of pirates
My first non-working dayt is tomorrow (contract starts on the first of Feb, but this is a pre-work workday to make things go smoother).

6:36 PM
@Hennes I'm willing to attribute the decline of society on iProducts if you are...

Still, I have to post this
I have very little iproduct experience. The lack of a replaceable battery is a killer for me

7:31 PM
i think i have got a phishing email
yup its fake
Thank you for your reports. Please avoid opening the email or clicking any links https://t.co/uwFW1fCPcP
the target server is in australia

8:15 PM
Problem had nothing to do with protection circuits or electronics. Faulty battery design and manufacturing was the cause of the fires.

@bwDraco Samsung hardware: perfectly good. Demanding more battery in smaller space: bad.

Going forward, Samsung will implement a new battery inspection process to address these issues.

Not entirely unexpected findings, good to know that it's attributable to manufacturing faults rather than a fundamental design problem though.
Although it being difficult to assemble without damaging the cells might be considered a design issue
Pity it cost the company so much to learn that batteries make good explosives though.

@Mokubai What if you drove a nail through a battery with a Paslode nailer?
:P

Aye, someone linked that the other day

8:26 PM
...that was me

lol, should have read the quote
Hopefully the Note 8 comes out later this year when my upgrade comes due

@bwDraco i see a face in the flames o_O

@djsmiley2k it's Aslan!

I read that as 'it's Asian!' and started wondering about racial stereotyping of flames...

^^ @djsmiley2k made clearer.

Welcome to the Stack Overflow podcast #99 recorded Thursday, January 19 at the Stack Overflow HQ in NYC. Today's podcast is brought to you by Reverse Polish notation.

9:22 PM
got my daughters amazon fire here
and i can'#t see this otg device
tho actually it's not showing up on my other phone either, ffs
or maybe my wife didn't insert the usb key properly XD

@djsmiley2k lol. Always blame the other half, right? ;p

hmmmmm works on phone
but not tablet :/
or not
i'm annoyed as I had a good cable
and she let the kids bend it
and now this one don't work
do i need to do something special in android to get otg to work?
the very first time it popped up
and now it wont
ok, flash stick was too far in, ffs

10:21 PM
i just had the weirdest dream
it involved a volcano on the south coast of england
and children swimming in the water filled caledra
it probably means i'm going mad

@bwDraco i would believe that to be true. you can have 2 batteries of very equal actual original (not china overspeced) batteries, and one of them could last 2 years, and one could last 4+ . (to 80%) . they just dont age well, or puff up, which happens with Junk.
I have had batts from specific manufacturers that have lasted longer than any li-ion battery ever should. and batts bought new that were already high resistance, and (in that case) probably were shelved longer and carp too.
heck china knockoffs can even screw up a (how old school) ni-cd . I had to get china knockoffs of my old electric screwdriver. they have terrible self discharge, which can indicate a bad manufacting process, impurities or bad seperators.
I always thought that the issue with china products, was they did not Care about the americans they were sending them to. Then i watched some YousaTube videos done by a english speeking resident.
Thier Houses , dont last 6 years ???? While i might complain that a cheeply built american house might not last as long as the 30 year mortgage does. this dude was showing cheaply built china hoses that are falling apart 30 DAYS after they were built.

Bob
10:41 PM
@Mokubai Not sure it can be blamed on 'more battery in smaller space' either... S7 Edge had a higher battery capacity.

that reminds me of a satirical joke
but i think they are banned at the moment

Bob
Though I dunno the respective densities.
And the second lot wasn't even a design issue, just poor manufacturing processes. Which sound like they could've happened regardless of capacity.

what would be totally cool is if they solve this, and have better batteries put in the phones . . . before i buy one :-) burn while you learn.
<--- still remains amazed at the quality and perfection put into hard disk drives. squeesing all that data on live in microscopic ammounts over and over again for years, with all that mechanical prone to fail stuff, added to the electrical curcuits.

10:57 PM
@Psycogeek Yeah, you would think batteries would be easy to get right by comparison :)
