Huh... Cavil should have reset by now...

I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.

@MichaelFrank cavil reboot messages go on Bot Overflow

Ahh, but now how will I know to check the Mighty Ape Daily Deals? :<

12:20 AM
The first rule of mighty ape daily deals is you do not talk about mighty ape daily deals WATCH OUT FOR FLYING POO!

Uh oh, I'm being serially upvoted :/
Surprisingly this is my first time receiving serial votes of any kind

@JourneymanGeek You really like using strikethrough, do you?

@bwDraco almost entirely for comic value.

Also: Is there something I can do with my lack of a sense of humor? In some situations (including dispute resolution), I could come across as very cold for this reason (even if I can fully avoid making incorrect moderation decisions due to emotion or otherwise).
I'm trying to be a bit more casual.
No, Clippy, go away :\

@bwDraco errr... If you're trying to be casual, you arn't

12:25 AM
@bwDraco He just wants to help!

and with humour, you can break down a joke into its constituent components, and never find what's funny. Its all about timing.

If you're really worried about not sounding right, the best thing to do is just not say anything. Usually when I can't find the right words for a message, somebody will come along soon and express basically what I was going for

@BenN Don't do this in an interview. Terrible idea.

LOL, yes, in an interview, silence is not a good response
But in chat it's generally fine

Got this cool little gadget:
Why isn't this oneboxing?
Rather pricey but it's best of breed. Documentation isn't exactly well-written but it's really powerful.
Put simply:

Hold on as I write it up...

Bob
...isn't that just a inline USB power meter? Of the type I could pick up for <$10 off ebay? :\

@Bob It's an unusually advanced model.

1:31 AM
- Hold the button as you insert the meter into the port to select Connected, Quick Charge, or Disconnected modes; let go when the desired mode appears on the display. Connected mode (USB Connect) passes the data wires through to allow communication. Quick Charge mode (USB Fast) connects the data pins to a charge controller that is capable of negotiating with the downstream device for fast charging (including Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, if the power source supports it). Disconnected mode detaches the data pins altogether (they are left "floating"). A fourth mode "Zero" recalibrates the zero p

Bob
*shrug* still seems fairly pointless to me
unless you have particularly special requirements
I suppose for curiosity's sake...
then again, curiosity is why I was considering a (more general/GPO) power meter the other day :P

A one-button UI can't get much more complex than this.

1:49 AM
@Bob My other USB power meter simply had a LED seven-segment display array that alternated between voltage and amperage. This alternating behavior isn't ideal, to say the least.

@Bob Maybe if Benson had one of these...

(Meter specified accuracy: 0.2% basic accuracy. Voltage ± 0.2% + 1 digit, amperage ± 0.8% + 3 digits. For more information on what this means, see electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/23182/…)

Wow it looks like I can extreme PC makeover for $1000
I used parts with most reviews
But I think the pc is already 2 years old given the i5
I'm poor so you know even if I build a computer I won't ever get it
Also today at my summer program, we were given computers to take apart. My group got a rack mounted server
So I was like, "okay set aside the RAM, I might need it for my home server'
so an hour later, I check the express tag of the junk server (dell...) and check the RAM against my home server's. Oh they look compatible, so I think I'll keep the RAM-- poof.
The RAM was gone... somebody literally took it and threw it away.
So, I'll keep my server at 1 GB for eternity
When will I ever get the money to upgrade all the junk in my house
My dad sets money apart for a new car... parts for the pool...

Bob
I feel like I just stepped back 10 years

who the do you think you are, using netrenderer to render netrenderer
i cant canting anymor
So yeah I lost a free opportunity to upgrade my computer
is elon musk ready to take space to astronauts?

@Psycogeek ooh, you recommend any specific model ?

Bob
3:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek how was the shio pan? :P

@Bob pretty damned good ;p

lol, I am now using a soundboard in Payday 2 in an extremely roundabout way
I bought Audiobus and Stereomux on my iPhone (the names sound like gstreamer plugins, but I digress). Then I bought a soundboard app supporting Audiobus. Then I installed Studiomux's server and VST plugins on my Windows box. Then I plugged in my phone to my computer over USB. Then I started Cakewalk Sonar (which I previously bought), added a softsynth track, hooked it up to the VST plugin, then wired up audiobus, studiomux and the soundboard :P
oh and I hooked up the master bus in sonar to virtual audio cable so it comes back as a loopback "capture" device that payday 2 can use
so the audio goes: ( (iphone) soundboard -> audiobus -> studiomux ) -> (usb) -> ( (Windows PC) studiomux server -> studiomux VST generator -> Cakewalk Sonar Platinum -> virtual audio cable output via MME -> virtual audio cable input via loopback driver -> Payday 2 -> internet -> other users )

@allquixotic summary for people video-challenged? :P

@Bob an 11 year old kid called his office, explained his diagnosis process of a board he had in front of him, explained what he thought was broken, and asked what his next steps were... and Louis was blown away (1) that it's a kid and (2) that the quality of his thinking and analysis was so good, when even fully grown adults in his industry are generally nowhere near that good at analyzing a problem
he offered to help the kid use his equipment and knowledge to fix his board for free if he comes by Louis's office

Anyone tried Boogie Board?

is it e-ink?

Yes sir, I can boogie
@electronbeam Sup hun?

9:34 AM
Its not e ink
its some other thing

i find that normal paper and pen works equally well if not better

@Burgi If you need to quickly jot down stuff that will take only 20% of entire sheet you will have to sit with it unless you thrash that sheet with 80% still left to be used. I hate throwing away sheets with still space on them left.
So I have to sit with those tasks that are already completed and just distract me.
This board solves this.
I could buy erasable marker white chalkboard though...

9:49 AM
i don't know any paper pad and pen that costs the same as your solution @Boris_yo
£1 max

£256 for a pen that doesn't even write
And £256 for a pen tray to put them in
That's the sorta crap that people around here might buy by accident when someone makes a typo on an order

._.
@Boris_yo just draw a border and use more of it
or tuen it over
or

i do the border thing

eh, the book I am reading has a sci fi movie quoting, punning dog...
Its a irish wolfhound but nonetheless I am suitably amused.

are you reading your biography?

Bob

heh
google's plan rolls on
to get the public to index all the things for them

@HackToHell you might think about getting an external cart system (drop in your choice of any raw drive) or if you need lots, a fanned box e-sata thunderbolt, nas or usb3 (or 2 of those) that has good cooling and a good controller. other than that a my book with 2-4t drive, and the seagate external 2-4t box too if it isnt going to be spun up connected for years at a time.
carts for usb 3.0 are only 24-50USD and have fair reviews,, and the disk is better open to the air, which just leaves protecting the drive and ESD.

anyone seen this pokemon go thing that launched today?

10:47 AM
@Psycogeek Oh will avoid having it connected for too long, I was actually thinking of getting a USB extender and having it permanently attached
I'll connect when i need then

Urgh damn Brexit has pushed up the price of hard drives by about 20%

!!s/hard drives/everything/

@JourneymanGeek Urgh damn Brexit has pushed up the price of everything by about 20% (source)

@Burgi some of my online friends are a wee bit obsessed with it
seems like a plot to make people go outside

everyone in the office is going mad for it
someone is already the lead pokemon master in manchester....

10:57 AM
poke-a-what?

poke-a-mon
You go find a jamacan or a gungan....

@JourneymanGeek it's a plot by google, to index the worlds geographic locations

makes a lot of sense

lol

@HackToHell things like these amazon.com/Tera-Grand-External-2-5-Inch-USB3-VE603/dp/… take 3.5s 2.5s and have dust covers, which after getting dust in my more open ones is a good idea :-) the second advantage is you can drop something in to test, or clear that was originally internal to a computer.
cheaper verision of these caveats, only usb2 (ahh it just takes longer) unsure how well they handle Huge drives, when some will say "up-to" 3T but there is no reason why they wouldnt handle an 10T that i know of. but sometimes a controller is doing traslations to work with any OS like XP for bigger drives.
I also like this style amazon.com/Sabrent-External-Lay-Flat-Docking-EC-DFLT/dp/… because a drive formatted for horizontal operation (in a desktop) would be better kept in the same orientation. although that matters little to modern drives, it is very same. and the lid to keep dust out when there is no drive in.

11:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek Then it also fills up trash faster and hurts Gaia.

@Psycogeek Looks pretty awesome
THe price is steep tho

They're not cheap, no.
Mine does eSATA too but I never use it

@HackToHell that is the idea, i didnt want to pick a cheap one, until i read what is wrong with each of them.

They're a bit finicky to use too
I completely missed the conversation about what you want to use it for though

11:29 AM
"This is the #1 Best Seller ... sometimes #1 doesn't count for much" lol
" Both times, the (unnamed) Dock disconnected from my computer within a couple hours of kicking off the processing activity" yea, and staying asleep after standby, having to be re-plugged to wake up, issues still with 3.0 and any of these controllers. remember how people are still relating that USB3 (anything) will oddly disconnect on some peoples machines.

Blame the external PSU, or use eSATA.
(Also blame Seagate drives)

the seagate controller I use goes to sleep and wont wake up, i am sure that some of it is the intel usb3 parts and pieces. but it works out perfect, because it is backup, and can backup for the whole day. then after a sleep cycle it becomes un available to viruses :-)

I want to punch someone.
Fuck off Clippy.
Should have seen that coming...

11:54 AM
lol

@qwertyuiop is there a day you don't want to punch someone?

reviewers are really socking it to price gougers on these new Nvidia and AMD cards, selling for 100-1000$ over thier regular price because of availability. releacing greatest new card and getting 2 stars :-)

12:14 PM
how did dell become such a large pc manufacturer in such a small amount of time?

when gateway and that other one died?

yeah
probably off topic for the main site

or it is a corporate conspiracy, and the others were collapsed on purpose so they could Own The World.
(insert illuminati above as needed :-)

maybe its a stupid question because apple is 40
not that much older than dell
only the likes of IBM and HP are older

Someone can become the largest PC manufacturer in the space of 3 years...
Heck, if you catch on to the latest craze/whatever's in fashion, you can corner the market in the space of 3-5 years easily.
Just look at the iPhone/iPod/iPad/iWhatever

35 mins ago, by Burgi
maybe its a stupid question because apple is 40

Lenovo managed to become the second largest PC manufacturer in the space of 10 years
In fact their main market segments they've only been active in for between 4 and 7 years

only after they bought IBMs manufacturing capacity

Bob
and brand

12:55 PM
good point

Nope, wait. Lenovo is now the world's largest PC manufacturer
When IBM sold off their business they had barely 5% market share.
Even if you count IBM/Lenovo together, they managed to go from 1/3rd the size of Dell to 1.5x larger than Dell in 10 years

what was IBMs market share?

3 mins ago, by qwertyuiop
When IBM sold off their business they had barely 5% market share.

I still feel a slight sense of fear everytime I do an rm -rf *

same here
I always have to wipe my eyes and make sure there's not a / before that *
and that pwd is also not /
there should be a checklist for rm -rf *
that says...
1 - Is pwd = /
2 - Is / before *

it's aliased on any sensible system now
so you can't do rm -rf /

Bob
...that's not an alias

wait no, actual change to rm it seems - you have to do --something-delete-somethingroot

Bob
--no-preserve-root

2:08 PM
@Bob yeah just realised, but for a long time many distro's had a alias
'just in case'

Bob
bur rm -rf * while in / will happily mess you up

why would you ever actually deliberately do rm -rf / ?
@Bob Oh sure.

does that save you from the UEFI firmware issue?

but why are you in / and able to do rm -rf * ?

2:09 PM
@djsmiley2k rage and frustration? typo?

Bob
@djsmiley2k rm -rf "/${var}"

because you're root?

Bob
if $var is empty...

Why are you root if you don't need to be, and why are you being lazy?
rm -rf /../
tbh it'd be nice if it just listed files to be deleted, asked for confirmation
by default

or a count of files

2:12 PM
@djsmiley2k cause lots of idiots run things in root all the time

\o/
lets change that list
1. Don't be an idiot.

Hey one step, im good with that

(i once accidently deleted 2/3rds of my music collection, I too am an idiot.

2:28 PM
@djsmiley2k I once deleted it all. Twice. In the same day
(I have 3 copies)

Good evening!

Good afternoon!
