12:02 AM
@JonasCz quite a few people have done it ._.
and netbook motherboards are usually a single board connecting to the netbook over a cable. Your problems are carpentry not computing ;)
youtube is now suggesting a bunch of brazillian japanese channels ._.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Better than an endless stream of Minecraft videos because you clicked on one, five years ago.
YT links are like a minefield.

hm
brazillian cooking videos too
Ok
GO HOME YOUTUBE, YOU ARE DRINK

Bob
12:17 AM
If YouTube is the drink, does that make you the drunk one? :P

No, but it makes me wish I was alcoholic ;p

it is easier to become a cat holic

ah sorted

12:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek I once talked about tech for 5min with an openly gay dude. Facedumb kept suggesting me to add friends a lot of guys in shirtless abs.

ah. That's not happened to me. Yet.
Amazon does think I read shitty romance novels tho

@JourneymanGeek thank me after you watch the video.
There's a part in there where I wrote "bla bla bla click subscribe bla bla". With literal blah blahs

Also the last translated phrase is an easter egg a complete fabrication poetic licence an unfunny joke.

I need to figure out how to activate that then ;p
lol

12:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek Activate what where how what?

"diy" 'subs?

@JourneymanGeek What you don't know how to produce .srt s?

Nope, or how to load them on youtube

IIRC you can only load them on youtube on videos you published yourself.

12:41 AM
To create them you need something like gnome-subtitles or similar

yeah I read your subs and used that to make my instructions better ;p
ah

tl;dr: download the video and use a srt-capable player locally
^

hmm. Replacing all the cat commands with dogs...
except catshaman.
cause catshaman is cool
!!catdrop

!!catshaman

12:46 AM

@ThatBrazilianGuy pong

ahh
cavil was a little slow on that

1:21 AM
pretty. Also, them coloured chip sockets

1:59 AM
welp. Broke my compact camera battery (will not communicate with camera, protection failed short so battery allows unbounded output current :/). A replacement has been ordered.
How do I safely discharge the battery and prepare it for disposal?
(Battery has just under 4V on it so it's nowhere near discharged.)
I'm going to call Nikon. This is not okay.
A battery's protection circuit cannot be allowed to fail in such an unsafe manner.

2:29 AM
Morning!

@bwDraco that does not make a lot of sence. the protection curcuit keeps shorts from happening indeed, but given that it is still showing voltage, or that the protection is locked closed, the battery should still provide "voltage" to the unit, and the ammount of current would be determined by the draw from the unit.
To discharge it for disposal you would toss a resister on it, or just shoot it through, it will discharge fast enough :-)
If it is a battery that did a lot of communications to the camera, that is a failed way to make a battery :-) but it could just be the data connection is not being made from the device to the battery pack.

Bob
@Psycogeek I've heard a bucket of salt water is a good way to discharge them :P
Just do it somewhere away from flammables and don't stand next to it, to be safe

start with a reset, and hope. Pull the battery, and any backup battery that exists, wait till the internal capacitors discharge fully, then clean the battery connections, and stuff it back in for a cold boot .
@Bob works for me, while lithium metals react in water, it is rather booooorrrring to even break one open and put it in water.

Bob
@Psycogeek lithium metals react in air too

I just leave them outside on the gravel, till they are surely dead.

Bob
2:38 AM
in practice, if your case is damaged to the point that water ingress is likely then it'd probably be on fire already :P

Bob
salt water bath => medium resistance discharging with a lot of heat capacity for cooling (in theory)
I normally just chuck em in the mobile phone recycling bins (they take batteries too)

3:09 AM
0_0
@Bob that sounds dangerous
and I've never heard of discharging batteries pre disposal

it's soes your trash can doesnt burst into flames :-)
catch the house on fire at 2am, and die of smoke inhalation, and all that other fun stuff.

Bob
3:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek you're generally not supposed to throw away li-ion batteries at all
also, garbage trucks have compactors... compactors crush things... yea.
@JourneymanGeek Still, I'm not actively recommending it. Just something I've heard here and there :P

@Bob We hold them for recycling.

Bob
45 mins ago, by Bob
I normally just chuck em in the mobile phone recycling bins (they take batteries too)

The standard procedure is to tape up the terminals to prevent short-circuit and drop the batteries off to a recycling point.

that makes sense

3:38 AM
ola ola ola
looks like my internet outage is bigger than anticipated
sigh

The mola, mola mola.
@HackToHell what internet outage?
Has civilisation collapsed with men and women outside their homes, phones in the air, groaning brains whaaaatsaaaappppp faaaacceeeeboooolkkkk yet?

Unfortunately it's just one ISP
Some idiot dug up the road and along with it, a cable that feeds half of my city,

And pairing opticial fibre cables is a bitch apparently
and they don't work on sundays .-.

@HackToHell noooo, because it would be smart to work on roads sundays when the roads are less used. we wouldnt want anyone to be smart, it ruins the whole ambiance we are working towards

3:44 AM
Yes, working on it on a working day makes perfect sense of course.

@HackToHell it is

4:11 AM
Man... MUNs are weird...

Bob
4:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek ozbargain.com.au/node/254833 damn that went fast :P

damn
@Bob what I consider the best great reasonably priced monitor, at nearly half price... yeah, makes sense ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea... if I saw that a bit earlier it would've been very tempting

@Bob I'm internally debating ordering a one plus three from the US one plus store

Bob
5:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek do they ship internationally?

5:23 AM

O_O

PowerColor teases upcoming Devil card. If history is any indication, this will likely be a dual-GPU (Devil 13) card with a pair of RX 480s on it.

AGH the spoilers!
Nvidia Cards can do this:
RED SCREEN OF GRAPHICS
\

@Bob nope, I'll use CGW

Man, @ChatBotJohnCavil really needs a cowsay feature...

5:34 AM
I know
Lets make it chat like a human

!!do you know how to speak like a cow?

@Rahul2001 Certainly

@Bob I'm cranking -_-

@Rahul2001 Nope

5:35 AM
:O ubuntu mate

@Edity I donno, cavil sometimes seems to hold a decent conversation sometimes.

Unless you abuse him

@Edity you're getting the cold shoulder, clearly

yep
@JourneymanGeek for your refrence, !!ban is banning people and !!unban is unban.

Bob
5:41 AM
@allquixotic you're what? o.O

@Edity I do think I'm fine with the status quo.

ok :D

@Bob working on the dedi
stuck on libvirtd hang atm -_-

Bob
ah
:S
@allquixotic You running virt-manager inside the server?
I just did virsh :\

@Bob yep!

5:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek Doesn't seem that bad. ;p

@Bob OH - hey - did you know that recent libvirtd now supports sparse zvols?

Bob
@allquixotic what does support mean? I've been using sparse zvols this whole time

I have a 200 GB "capacity" zvol (as the libvirtd backend for storage) with a starting allocation size of 4 GB that will grow over time

Bob
do you mean it clears out zeroed bytes?
wouldn't that depend on the guest OS doing the same?

@Bob the pool-define / pool-create virsh commands and the equivalent APIs support actually creating ZFS zvols that are sparse as of like April 17 2016

Bob
5:46 AM
@allquixotic remind me to send you a copy of my VM creation process sometime
literally the first step is to create a sparse zvol :P
@allquixotic oh, creating...

you don't have to create a sparse zvol with this patch

Bob
I create them manually, load an image into them, and run it via libvirt
libguestfs-tools for that

I need to install Windows Server, that's the problem

Bob
what part is hanging?

creating the domain I guess

Bob
5:48 AM
o.O
that's... weird.

Jun 27 05:24:56 kobol libvirtd[24685]: internal error: failed to get number of host interfaces: unspecified error - errors in loading some config files

Bob
is it running native or within another VM/container?

libvirtd? on bare metal Ubuntu 16.04, not in a VM or container

Bob
that really sounds like something that should 'just work'
@allquixotic installed from repo?

Windows server 2015

5:51 AM
@Bob actually using the latest point release of libvirtd from a PPA

Bob
2014 though
> Since this didn't come up again I assume it's resolved. Please reopen if
not.
@allquixotic Does ncftool list work? :P

@Bob it would be hilarious if that fixes it

Bob
ouch, could be a config just about anywhere: bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=8278
> I have this line in /etc/modprobe.d/bonding.conf
‘alias bond1 bonding max_bonds=3'
With this line when i do ‘virsh iface-list --all' I get an error:
yay generic errors

iface-list --all works, but I don't know if that's what was hanging it to begin with
guess all I can do is try to create it again

Bob
:\

6:01 AM
(Lol)

@Edity a good idea would be to assume people know what they are doing here. Mostly

erm

Why would he want to run a beta OS on a VM?

ok

Does anyone know how to write good unit tests? :D
and helo o pencil
Am I allowed to spoil GoT here?

@allquixotic but they kinda had a challenge and all

@HackToHell I'm not watching it. I however will be the one who might have to inform your next of kin....

besides nobody is using it for secret stuff
@JourneymanGeek hehe
So unit tests means I pass along the edge cases
To the said function/action
Hm

I want to play "Escape from XP"
OH CLIPPY
I FOUND A EASTER EGG
O holy easter egg
I want to play "Escape from XP"
(nope)\

Why am I doing this to me
k

6:15 AM
lol

6:30 AM
@HackToHell cause you like pain, and were into beastiality, necrophila and sadism, until you realised you were beating a dead horse?

@JourneymanGeek we are going on a list

everyone's on a list.

Random people taking selfies in the middle of conferences :/
I think I've gone mad

Which conference @Rahul2001 ?

tomorrow? the AMD RX480 is "launched"

@HackToHell Model United Nations
@JourneymanGeek ?

@Psycogeek don't we have all the leaked benchmarks
@Rahul2001 ah

@JourneymanGeek and they will make thier money back by opening the "freedom store" because none of the previous software is compatable :-)

@JourneymanGeek it obviously sucks... it could be better, but they don't tune the hardware properly

6:56 AM
is it legal to hex-edit binary of gplv2 software without publicizing it?

@Rahul2001 zat pricepoint is crazy

@HackToHell yes there are some benches that look real enough. enough to know that the 1070 walks all over it.

@Unknown123 Might I point you at law.stackexchange?

@Psycogeek for that price, it's a killer

@HackToHell question is what's it going to kill?

6:58 AM
Let's put on tin foil hats

Its cheaper than a dumbphone, and they've got a loss leader with no profit centre. They're selling razer handles, with fixed blades.

We must bust the case

cause I'd totally buy one at that price, just for the lolz.

I don't get how sheer volume -> profit
If they make a loss for every phone they sell

@HackToHell i mostly want to know for "normal" gaming how it does on power consumption. But then i am reading how there are games out i am playing already that desire more than 4 gig of memory already.

6:59 AM
@HackToHell high volume would mean fixed costs are spread out
but this is so low they can't even match fixed cost

Yeah, there's only so much you can go low

lets see how high AMD can stack RAM :-)

Hell if you scraped it for metals, you might turn a profit

yup
cheap has a market
but india has a bunch of 'cheapest in the world' 'shoddy' and no one has ever seen one
wasn't there a cheap tablet promised?

yeah
I preordrerd
shit came too late
and the price also increased

7:02 AM
ahh, to?
and shouldn't they rename it then? ;p

Bob
@Unknown123 you're never required to publish GPL software. However, if you give someone else the software, you must also include the source - and that includes the modifications made (which Stallman says should be embedded in a script that performs the modifications...)
If you just use the software yourself, you don't need to do any of this.
Non-lawyer's interpretation.

@JourneymanGeek These are all started by university students to get government scholarships, then abandoned after they pass out

Aakash a.k.a. Ubislate 7+, is an Android-based tablet computer promoted by the Government of India as part of an initiative to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in an e-learning program. It is produced by the British-Canadian company DataWind. It is manufactured by the India-based company Quad, at a new production centre in Hyderabad, with a planned trial run of 100,000 units. The tablet was officially launched as the Aakash in New Delhi on 5 October 2011. The Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development announced an upgraded second-generation model called Aakash 2 in April 2012. The Aakash...

Yeah, I bought a ubislate for Robotics... it sucks

Bob
@JourneymanGeek there was some speculation that they're planning to sell cheap-ish TVs later and are using this as alternative marketing - with fixed volumes so it fits within budget
not the craziest thing I've heard

7:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek No play store
Some stupid alternative

@Rahul2001 see "cheap/shoddy"
@Bob that might make sense

Bob
> 4-inch 960 x 540
...that's better than some of the phones I have here

What should I name my remote application launching utility?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Heck, if that cheap Firefox OS phone had those specs, it might've actually succeeded O_O
Intex Cloud FX
> The phone comes with a 3.50-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 pixels by 480 pixels

The Intex Cloud FX is powered by 1GHz Spreadtrum SC6821 processor and it comes with 128MB of RAM. The phone packs 46MB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 4GB via a microSD card. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Intex Cloud FX packs a 2-megapixel primary camera on the rear.
> 46 MB of internal storage
wut.
And it was priced at $35...

I tried installing a few 3d vision game drivers and now all games are showing in Red, Blue.
I don't know what app or driver is doing that
I need stereoscope display.

7:16 AM
46mb?
lol
I think you have anaglyphic cd turned on

I'll check in Nvidia control panel
There seems to be no analygryphic in NVIDIA. I'll google

hm. There used to be before
now, seems not. Odd

@JourneymanGeek @Bob Thank you very much for your answers

"Eventually I found that disabling the 3D anaglyph function in the Nvidia control center fixed the problem, something i've not had to mess with previously. No other game or program was affected, and I didn't do anything except update drivers. I wish I had more to say, but there it is, hope it helps someone."
(Stereoscopic mode )

@Psycogeek All I see is Sterecope settings. No analygraphic

7:28 AM
i donno what about in the openGL settings?

Turning off Stereoscopic seems to work. Nvidia 3d driver doesn't seem to support SBS.
I checked on one game.

looks like you can profile the game/program itself, and set the stereoscopic for only when that program is running. google.com/… i was trying to use a image search like this to find where they all are. I didnt realise that the nvidia control center has more buttons and switches than the amd.

ahh
my guess is it checks for a stereo monitor and/or glasses and switches to anaglyphic otherwise
annoyingly I can't check cause nvidia control panel crashed

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's ridiculously low
as in, I had more in a flash drive in 2005
as in, my watch probably has more
heck, my mouse might have more

@Bob I'm sure tomtom's phone toaster has more

Bob
7:39 AM
though to be fair consumer routers often have less somehow
ah, no, my watch has 4 MB :P
Pebble Time has 16 though

Bob
and plenty of smartwatches are up to 4 GB iirc

I don't wear a watch.
yup

Bob
@JourneymanGeek heh, I've always worn one, and it's been a Pebble for the last half year
used to be an old analogue one
the Pebble is bulky, but great battery life and I find the phone unlock and the ability to quickly read notifications extremely useful

I nearly got the razer nabu watch ._.
(decent battery life, notifications....)
kinda failed the 3 month test ;p

Bob
7:45 AM
huh, my watch actually has 8 MB... it's the new version

morning

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's more a band than a watch :P
but 6 days is good
oh they have a watch version
o.O 12 month battery life
and 7 day lipo
weird
and pricey O_O

ok so.... this second screen has crazy colours

...
that moment you accidentally double click while shift-clicking a bunch of folders.
2

7:49 AM
@Bob eh, nicer digital watch price.
also, zat screen.
but yeah, the price/utility made no sense to me.

cpx
So today I learned about Linux and I am going to install my first Linux OS on a VirtualBox. I think I will go with Fedora.

@cpx I have a bias, but I prefer the KDE remix of it over the default gnome.
and there's a few things different (dnf over yum for package management)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek wait apt? fedora?
thought it was yum

its dnf now
my bad

cpx
8:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ah, from the screenshots I am seeing that KDE looks more like Windows.

@cpx I have a deep seated hatred of gnome s

cpx
I am very new to these GNOME/KDE terms but I think coming from Windows I'd prefer KDE as well.

and fedora has a 'better' kde respin at the moment.

first you complained about not being on the starwall. Then you complained about being on it

@DavidPostill xD
@JourneymanGeek I'm not complaining, it was merely an observation

Bob
@Rahul2001 look on the bright side, it's not about your sudden human-toilet transformation. Or a chmod disaster.

Lol

9:19 AM
@Bob It wasn't a disa... wait what? Human-toilet transformation what?!

;p
toilet bowl more precisely

Some human transformed into a toilet bowl? What?

why am I a toilet

I don't see a bowl mentioned
Did he ever explain?
Ah yes he did

Hm... this app is going to be pretty awesome

9:53 AM
@Rahul2001 whcih one

@HackToHell the remote control one...

uhm
the app huh
no idea .-.

10:20 AM
@HackToHell a simple command line utility I'm building. Let's you remotely run apps and commands on a PC

@Rahul2001 ah cool link ?

@HackToHell still working on it... maybe in a few hours?

cool

Q: Accidentally knocked a capacitor off a laptop motherboard seemingly related to USB

fpghostI accidentally knocked off a capacitor from my laptop motherboard (Lenovo Thinkpad S540, VIUS6 LA-A171P board). According to the circuit diagram, this capacitor (C2434) was something to do with the USB 3.0 circuit (perhaps the VBUS). See the pics attached. The C2434 capacitor is toward the top-ri...

HOW?!
should I be worried? If you find yourself in a position where you random knock components off of the motherboard of your laptop, yeah, you should - in general - be worried. :) — pipe 8 hours ago

Such flavors.

amen.

surface mount caps need... a certain degree of talent to 'accidentally' knock off
especially if its a single cap

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol
screwdriver-related talent? :P

hmm
Actually I was thinking a flathead
heavens knows why you need one

Bob
@JourneymanGeek pretty much why I moved on to plastic spudgers

11:54 AM
large crosshead eyeglass screwdrivers would get you into a thinkpad
and there's precious little that needs you to open up a thinkpad totally unless they mucked with the old design of having little hatches for everything
