12:42 AM
@NickAlexeev I hate to say it, but what I'd do/did was restore for my last pre windows 10 backup, work out what update did it, and disable it.

morning

Good evening!

Bob
Looks like Google support is a bit of a crapshoot o.O

had my interview today

How'd it go?

12:52 AM
dunno
I was asked about Nessus, PowerShell, Server 2012, PII protection, and a number of other things
and then the interviewer destroyed my resume.
but that format got me into my current position
and an interview for another one.

Bob
1:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek I seem to be getting into the habit of finding one good support guy and then getting a whole stream of script-followers after o.O

Lok
Lol even

1:16 AM
most of tonight will be a waiting game

@JourneymanGeek Would you keep the Windows update running? (Would you still trust it?)

@NickAlexeev also askvg.com/… might be worth a look
@NickAlexeev In this case, I'd suggest prompting before updates until june

bad update released?

and/or one of the many gwx disablers
@Rikai @NickAlexeev's windows install was upgraded without prompting.

ah
a few people have mentioned that
although 10 isn't that bad

1:20 AM
Oh, he got upgraded to Win10?!

(This message sponsored by the National Security Agency)

@JourneymanGeek Almost. I was nearby and pulled the plug [literally] before the Win 10 got auto-installed.

10 wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to agree to let quite a few people see your data.

I'm ok with 10
but I upgraded my systems on my own, and I didn't have any specific software that needed older versions

I've used it since TP
is the current release of 2016 viable for use?

1 hour later…
2:37 AM
Just came back from a final exam, did much better than expected.
Not much more to say except that I'm about to graduate with a MS in Computer Science.
Time to start hunting for a job...

@bwDraco Congratulations!

Departmental honors, too.

ugh, I'm feeling so worn out today
I woke up at 9, probably nuking lunch for myself from the emergency prepacked stuff.

@JourneymanGeek I feel you. Work is slowly killing me I think so im wide awake but very exhausted

Bob
2:45 AM
@bwDraco Nice.

Six years in the making. It's finally over.
Despite having just one course this semester, I had to fight harder than anticipated to stay on track.
This easily ranks as one of the hardest semesters I've gone through.
To spend hours a day working on a massive paper and not be able to make real progress on it is unbelievably frustrating. #GradSchoolProblems

masters or doctoral?

MS.

in?

Computer Science.

Bob
2:49 AM
Heh. I stopped at BSc. Wasn't too interested in the theory.

I stopped at Assoc
well, before actually.

Bob
But more power to you - should be good for a career, or research if you prefer.

I had a hard time grasping CS in school - I taught myself enough at home but lost interest

Bob
Procedure to log in to YT Music app: log in to different Google account, switch accounts, delete extra account from phone.
C'mon Google, get your crap working amongst your own services...
It's like Microsoft all over again.

I might get a general IT Associate degree and stick with certs
aiming for my CASP this summer

Bob
2:51 AM
No, scratch that. Microsoft support was more clueless but at least I could get support.
Google has support for YT Red but none for the app... bleh.
@SimonSheehan Was it the math? :P

the music subscription service wasn't very good
imo.
a lot of the videos that said I could save them to the phone failed.

Bob
@Rikai Eh. I'm about to find out.
I don't mind streaming. I just want to stream without the video.

how much is Red a month? $10?

Bob
There's lots of music on YT that I can't get elsewhere, let alone on Spotify.
@Rikai Yea, current promo seems to be a perpetual 9.99 AUD/month.

you can save music from YT to MP3

2:53 AM
@Bob Surprisingly not - I just found myself bored, not something i got into well

US$9.99 a month.

Bob
Will be 11.99 AUD/month for those signing up from next month onwards.

eh. I pay for Kindle Unlimited.

Bob
@SimonSheehan Ah. It was the math for me.

rather spend $10 on that

2:54 AM
No ads, offline watching, exclusive access to original shows.

@Bob I could see that, it does get a bit crazy!

Bob
I think I'll be keeping the Spotify subscription...

@bwDraco I has Netflix, and a YouTube-MP3 download site

Big fan of Spotify, I use the web player and I've never had a single ad and can skip anything?

Bob
@bwDraco tbh I usually don't care about the original shows, and offline watching isn't much of an issue for me - I rarely watch videos outdoors
But being able to play when the phone is locked could be useful.
And audio-only will definitely be useful, if it's implemented right. I still need to test it.

2:56 AM
hm
there's an app I had that added a button to YT to download the MP3 of a video
I think it was a Wanam module

I'm not a fan of Youtube to Mp3 - I REALLY dislike the quality

there's one that was really nice
forgot what it was

Yeah, would have to be VERY high quality for me to really enjoy it. Always notice it the most in the car

same with heavy-bass music

Bob
They haven't worked well since DASH
Most downloaders don't support it

2:58 AM
@SimonSheehan heh, I feel the same way about coding and CSey stuff
I NEED to know it, but I don't have the same passion I do for hardware and such

Bob
And that's what gets the highest bitrate

DASH?

@JourneymanGeek Now that I'm back in school for media, I'm definitely always all about hardware again

Bob
Adaptive bitrate streaming

I do like mashups, and they aren't the highest quality

3:00 AM
As for being worn out, being without work a while + waiting on the results of an interview + basically two weeks with just me and the dog does that

Bob
The highest bitrates are only available with DASH enabled

I should go make some ramen

Surprisingly, I'm just eating chips and sitting on the couch right now - an extremely rare occurrence

Amusingly my parents turn the lights on and off if they need my attention and I have headphones on
@SimonSheehan I woke up at 9, walked the dog, realised the leftovers from yesterday had gone bad, put another batch of rice for lunch, cooked some peas for the dog
not quite arsed to have breakfast or to shower yet

3:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek haha night time here so I went to work today, been relaxing tonight

I only work 3 instead of 4 days these next three weeks
two are comp days, one day is off is for a holiday

I'm 3 days on, 3 off, every other weekend

I'm usually 4x10 every week

not bad at all

Yeah, that sounds roughly like the work schedule at the job I interviewed for

3:08 AM
it's overnight so it's pretty cool

Apparently they'll be discussing it today, so I'll know soonish

good luck
I interviewed for another position

I hope it isn't 3 months before my next interview if not ;)

I think the schedule for that is 9 hours for 8 days, 8 for one, and off every other Friday
good luck @JourneymanGeek

:(
I didn't get it

3:20 AM
how do you know
did they contact you already?

ouch.
did they say why?

they felt someone else they interviewed was a better fit

:\
did they mention specifics, or nah

nothing too specific
They have the very same job with a different title so
Applied again ;p

Bob
3:36 AM
Ow. That's just plain bad luck.
@JourneymanGeek I wonder if you might be better off asking your current contact rather than going through the whole process again?

@Bob maybe, but chances are its the same team
and I want to see what happens

what exactly is it?

Oh. Datacenter tech job.

sounds cool
you'd take care of the servers as far as power, temp, humidity, etc?

Bob
Temp and humidity would probably be the A/C guys :P

3:45 AM
some of the jobs I've seen offered for DC are all-in-one

3:58 AM
@Bob Coordinating the AC guy will be a core responsibility.

4:37 AM
typically from what I've seen, AC's facilities
dc techs generally deploy, maintain, and retire servers

4:49 AM
http://siyge.com/2016/05/14/the-evolution-of-forums/
Seriously, leave a comment. There's a disqus box down on that page.

@Nick discourse is great technology but the barrier to entry is a little high
You can run phpbb on any shitty shared hosting
discourse needs docker

and a lot of RAM

@JourneymanGeek It's worth it to provide a better experience for the end-user. I never said it was easier for developers.

@Nick and the admins.

@JourneymanGeek Oh yeah, ofcourse them.

5:02 AM
docker should not be a replacement for documenting your install process correctly

@JourneymanGeek sounds like you've seen stuff like that go down.

yup
In the case of discourse, its cause there's a fair number of rerequisites, and its easier to support
but I've attempted a few installs from docs that failed cause 'it works for the developer' who maintains a docker container, not documentation

Bob
o.O when did Worldbuilding graduate?

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. That's interesting. Would you mind commenting that on the article page. My editor has been goofing around with Discourse for a while. Sounds like something everyone should be aware of.

github.com/aleks/HappyFeed here's an example. There's a LOT more prerequisites than that.

5:06 AM
@Bob long ago I believe.

@Nick its nothing to do with forums tho
its more of a wider 'disconnect' between the developer, enthusiast and admin mentality

Bob
@Nick Better question: when did it get a massive redesign?
Answer apparently is "8 hours ago".

@Bob they've been ploughing through graduations

Q: Site Design Launched!

Kurtis BeaversCongratulations! As you can see, the new site design just went live. Thanks to everyone for your patience. Also updated are the newsletter template and chat room based off of the new design. If you see any CSS/styling bugs, please start a new post and tag it with design and bug. Congrats again...

yup

@Bob Oh wow. Yea, that's way different from the last time I went there

@JourneymanGeek Discourse was the main topic really. I turned it into a fluff piece because I got lazy. I'd like to encourage discussion about discourse on that page...ironically, on disqus

Bob
5:09 AM
@Nick You wrote that?
(there needs to be a bit more spacing between the text and images...)

@Bob Site redesign happened after I wrote it. Can't edit till next month until maintenance is over. We're on a hiatus now. (Editor told me the same thing)
@Bob It looks cool now. Kind of an Isaac Asimov on Tatooine kind of feel.

@Nick commented.

@JourneymanGeek That is actually a pretty great project. I'm sure there are lighter alternatives. Do you actually run that?

@Nick no
I run ttrss
I wanted to trial that tho
I got too frustrated trying to pull in prerequisites to document what I was doing ;p
ttrss is 'traditional' you can run it on LAMP
I run it on lighttpd, and postgres rather than apache and mysql tho

@JourneymanGeek that docker renting service sounds like a lucrative startup right now :D

5:18 AM
;p
Actually makes a ton of sense...
pity I have very poor programming skills, (You'd need a control panel) and 0 business skills

@JourneymanGeek that's an interesting alternative. Are those easier to work with?

@Nick lighttpd is lighter weight
postgre is the 'recommended' database for ttrss
and many people prefer it to mysql

@JourneymanGeek Hmm, I might pitch that to some people. Lemme see if I can get one started. Students would be really happy to try making something like that just for the fun of it.

essentially though I guess this would be a 'simple' wrapper for docker commands. The 'fun' stuff is in how you handle connecting containers together and of course users.
Could built it atop say coreos
hmm
all great ideas, alas

@JourneymanGeek Now, that sounds like a learning experience.

5:30 AM
lol

@JourneymanGeek I thought Realm was the trending thing in DBMS right now.

@Nick I'm not talking trends ;p
looking at realm, its a replacement for sqlite...
and sqlite isn't really something designed for bigger DBs

Bob
@JourneymanGeek sqlite doesn't care if your DB is big or small
Big sqlite DBs aren't a problem
The problem with sqlite is when you want concurrent access.

that too?

Bob
It's perfectly happy with a single process using it. More than one process? Not too happy...
I mean, it works.
Consistency should be fine.
Performance will suffer.
196
Q: What are the performance characteristics of sqlite with very large database files?

SnazzerI know that sqlite doesn't perform well with extremely large database files even when they are supported (there used to be a comment on the sqlite website stating that if you need file sizes above 1GB you may want to consider using an enterprise rdbms. Can't find it anymore, might be related to a...

Can push it over 50 GB pretty easily according to some of those... needs a bit of tweaking though.

5:38 AM
hey guys...

Bob
> An SQLite database is limited in size to 140 terabytes (247 bytes, 128 tibibytes). And even if it could handle larger databases, SQLite stores the entire database in a single disk file and many filesystems limit the maximum size of files to something less than this. So if you are contemplating databases of this magnitude, you would do well to consider using a client/server database engine that spreads its content across multiple disk files, and perhaps across multiple volumes.
heh.
> SQLite supports an unlimited number of simultaneous readers, but it will only allow one writer at any instant in time. For many situations, this is not a problem. Writer queue up. Each application does its database work quickly and moves on, and no lock lasts for more than a few dozen milliseconds. But there are some applications that require more concurrency, and those applications may need to seek a different solution.

@Bob ...and PostgreSQL is that different solution?

Bob
Potentially.

@Nick in the case of ttrss, postgres is the supported database ;p
(also, I have a mysql db on that box as well)

Yeah, You might want to fix your keyboard @RahulBasu

dude, that was my sister! :/

"Your sister, I hardly knew her"

sorry, anyways...

@RahulBasu hence just a kick, to give you time to wrest back your computer?

6:20 AM
She did that when I went to get some toast...
I have no idea why...

6:36 AM
@RahulBasu Siblings are like that. How old is she 26? Yeah, you can expect stuff like that for a while. It's a phase.

@Nick 12 ;p
I say, I think I could become the youngest SE mod in history ;)

@RahulBasu Twelve is old enough to be smarter than .././././/.. It's when people reprogramme themselves that they become that kiddish.

I think it was revenge
I sometime post stuff on her groups
she uses my phone so...

@RahulBasu Good bro.

lol :P
um... someone help me out...
Am I wrong here? http://deepweb.stackexchange.com/a/175/48
see the comment thread

Bob
6:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek IIRC kicks actually increase in severity though I don't know the reset time

what happens if I get too many upvotes in a day?

@Bob typically if I need to kick someone more than once in a day....

do I not get more than 200 rep?

Bob
"deepweb.se"
yea no I'm not clicking that at work

lol

6:47 AM
Unless you get bounties or accepted answers after that

oh...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek @allquixotic You guys alright for this weekend?

@Bob I'll have to confirm later in the week.

Bob
Ah, k.

@RahulBasu As long as the site is not indexed by standard search engines for any reason, then it's part of the deep web. I think there are some precautionary measures you need to make to ensure that. I don't know what but this whole deep and dark semantics issue...that's a potential pothole for that entire SE.

Bob
6:49 AM
For some reason you keep getting the unlucky spawn in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the hard AIs o.O

lol
that's not quite the reason but yeah
I might just end up vegging out with a bunch of movies and junk food ;p

@Bob hollywood called. they need the screenplay for that story.

@Nick we play SOASE. I need to play the tutorials, at some point. I also seem to attract getting curbstomped.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's half the terrible spawn (making backup difficult) and half not being aware of half the game concepts cause you haven't run the tutorials yet :P

Bob
6:53 AM
Though I kinda learned about the whole culture thing the week before when I lost that asteroid to hostile culture -_-

Yeah ;p
But nahl I'm not chickening out cause I'm constantly dying

@JourneymanGeek There are curbs to get stomped at in space?

@Nick space curbs.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Nah, just didn't want you to get overly bored by effectively getting kicked out of the game early :S

6:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek That's so inspirational.

Bob
Also, we need to start keeping a backup colony ship or two in each others' empires :P

lol

Story of my life.
Knock me down, I keep getting back up

Bob
Pretty sure there's a song for that.

yesterday, by allquixotic
I would argue that Root Access is a personality cult built around JourneymanGeek for the most part

6:58 AM
@Nick having a positive outlook reinforced by occational TV show binges is always useful ;p

Bob
@Nick Tubthumping.

@Bob Nice hook. The hook of this one is nice too - "If the world breaks your legs, go beat it with your crutch": youtube.com/watch?v=nzfjGK8dWA8

Bob
I can't actually watch any of those right now :P

7:13 AM
even if I don't drink, and have never gotten into a barfight

8:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek And I was born in a state of innocence Estonia...

Its funnier if you don't reuse that.

Anyone else has their frequently used folders in a startup after PC boots-up? I have a few of them but the path is not as I want it to be affecting navigation:
This folder should be in Users/[User]/Downloads
What's the fuss about this HDR thing? bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1086203-REG/…

It makes photos look more 'real' though most people overdo it

8:28 AM
hmm ... this is actually an interesting article regarding GTX 1080: overclock-and-game.com/news/pc-gaming/…

@tereško I see a bit of a bias and a lot of speculation

lol
my nerd score is 96
;)
@JourneymanGeek what's your's?

8:46 AM
I do not believe in assessment. ;p
Some are born. Other are thrust into it. Some stumble facefirst into it
2

lol
I am sooo proud of myself...
I have the highest rep on deepweb.se
;p

@JourneymanGeek TBH, it's really hard to find unbiased news regarding GTX 1080
... I guess the TekSyndicate was the closest I found

@tereško I'm inclined to wait a bit for things to settle down.

same here
what got me worried is the DX12 related stuff from that article

9:01 AM
I do find the complaints about 3 card sli and bridges silly.

yeah, that one is pointless and only people with 10k rigs worry about it
but if it has any grain of truth to it, that Pascal hasn't actually improved async compute, it will suck for the entire industry

Stuff like that typically takes a while to come out. Like the ram on the 970s
also, they need to use spellcheck
and they're entirely basing it off cherrypicked external benchmarks.

Bob
@tereško The problem is how much bashing there is.
It's just hard to take seriously.
Ok, present the data, present an analysis... but once you go into full-on paranoid speculation I'm gonna go find another source.
> Nvidia influence aka money talks louder than words
> Fanboy Edition
Just reads as a rant...
How can I trust this to be unbiased reporting? cough

9:19 AM
you cant
especially since it's not made by a reporter to begin with

Bob
Eh. An unbiased review. etc. etc.
Doesn't have to be a reporter, they're reporting apparent issues.

@tereško The titles don't help
An interesting article to me would have comparisons, benchmarks...
He's also not taking into account that dx12 lets you run more than one video card without sli/crossfire

hmmm .... strange
did a little search around in the available reviews
in almost all games (except Tomb Raider), the GTX 1080 experiences a performance hit in DX12 (when compared against DX11), for resolutions higher than 1080p

Bob
Sounds like it needs driver optimisations
I'll look again in a month or two

Bob
9:54 AM
I saw AotS performance take a massive jump after a driver update :\

and we do know nvidia does optimise for specific games

10:16 AM
!!caat

!!google aots
Ah

google blocked our serverz :'(

10:35 AM
hello
got a second stage interview from this morning

Bob

11:27 AM
Quick - add some amusing comments before the question gets closed ;)

Q: What are the most basic Linux commands every developer should know?

David romDefine what are the basic Linux commands. Like as a five basic commands: ls cd mv mkdir rm Additional basic commands: echo, cat, man, pwd, cp, ln, less, grep, tail, ssh, reboot, poweroff. Define more commands.

lol
in my experience? Whatever the package manager commands are

i was trying to think of something witty about installing windows but failed

also no rm? rm -rf /? ;p

@JourneymanGeek lol. that would be too cruel. I think I've made enough witty comments ;)

11:48 AM
@Bob AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH‌AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA‌HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH‌AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA‌HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH‌AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA‌HAHA
@Bob That's so funny
I wish mine would update. :-(

^^ Updated with a small batch tool I made
Nothing adavnced, just makes life easier

12:12 PM
@DavidPostill that's one of the things I find funny
Everyone's expected to be a dev
yet many developers don't have fundamental sysadmin skills

12:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek since POSIX defines that you cannot delete your "current location" directory, that command is actually invalid :P

Geeze. I wouldn't link an actually dangerous command....

riiiiight ..
on a more serious note - the most important shell commands are: cat , grep & tail

@JourneymanGeek Huh? Estonia is as neutral as Singapore is. Have you visited there?

it's not neutrality, you are just slow to react

:p
We aren't neutral either.

12:36 PM
@tereško The most important shell commands are:
look; gawk; find; sed; talk; grep; touch; finger; find; flex; unzip; head; tail; mount; workbone; fsck; yes; gasp; fsck; more; yes; yes; eject; umount; makeclean; zip; split; done; exit:xargs!!

@Boris_yo O-0 An Estonian? On the internet? I've never seen that before
