@Burgi Mergers and aquisitions rather than bankrupt - virgin media is telewest + ntl (who both gobbled up the smaller local cable companies).

what's the windows tool that lets you 'reinitalise the install' ?

@djsmiley2k reset/refresh

We get a load of HP laptops, want to remove all the crap, image it, use that image on the rest
but obv. diff keys (windows 7)
Ah sysprep

Bob
@djsmiley2k sysprep
gah, I really should read the rest before responding

hehe
@Bob will it nuke the product key?

Bob
12:12 PM
can't remember :\

I think it will.

Running Sysprep will cause Windows Welcome to prompt you for a product key. You can use an answer file with Sysprep to prevent Windows Welcome from prompting you for a product key. If you specify a valid product key in the ProductKey setting of the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component during the specialize pass, then Windows Welcome will not prompt you for a product key.
drat

Bob
apparently it won't if you had an OEM key baked into the image
you'd have to remove the key first

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I finally found a use for my second monitor :P

12:15 PM
oh?

Bob
(chucked one of those slideshow music video things on it. looks pretty.)
now if only they were 4k... and my net could handle it...

looool
@Bob working with a single screen feels like missing a paw

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I never really do anything at home where a second screen would help
at work, sure, having devtools open on a second window is occasionally useful

@Bob researching answers ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek happens on main screen for me

12:23 PM
right now, I'm watching youtube on one screen and talking to you lot on the other

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...funny that, I'm 'watching' (read: listening to) yt on one :P
left one for the video here

My right screen is usually my primary
._.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yay! :P

I can't share the full extent of the WTFery but

Bob
@JourneymanGeek by that do you mean that's a legit ISP rep? o.O

12:30 PM
you didn't fix the grammar @JourneymanGeek

@Bob er no.
@Burgi going to delete it
its actively harmful

Was that answer suggesting you just cut it out?

....
Yes

Bob
@djsmiley2k s/cut/break/
s/break/broke/

12:32 PM
ok,i'm so confused :D
So, take 1 'imaged' windows laptop, OEM install. (i.e. it's delivered to us, with some software preinstalled by our suppliers.)
It also has all the HP crap. I want to remove said crap, image it, apply that image to futher laptops they supply us

that's how its supposed to work

ok
cept keys/activation?

If its a HP OEM install, chances are simply removing the crap and throwing it in should work
assuming its the same model

yup, i know I can't go switching up models, that's fine

o.O

12:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, therein lies the problem
'testing' this isn't going to be easy

Q: Stack Overflow returning HTTP error code 418 (I'm a teapot)?

caesayFirst a little background: I recently wrote a reverse proxy which I have found to work wonderfully so far, and being an avid Stack Overflow user, I thought I would try it out there. I was just playing around and everything was working perfectly, until I hit one page that suddenly returned HTT...

@JourneymanGeek ooo yah that's a possiblity
I don't even have the laptops yet, but interesting idea

@djsmiley2k I used to have the same laptop my dad did and used to yonk the recovery disks from him since I'd install things like linux
same idea

@JourneymanGeek I expect I maybe able to generate hp recovery media before starting any of this
all depends what they give me to play with.

12:42 PM
@djsmiley2k one set of recovery media would be a very good idea
imaged, and stored in a few places

one good set.
At the mo the person in charge admits they don't really know what they are doing, and just do enough to get it done
i.e. plug it into network, get windows updates for 3 days, done
ah ha!

.... One is none.

my brain hurts
volume licencing, blah blah
it'll be easier hopefully to put something together to remove all the crap :D

Also... Get updates for 3 days what?

yeah don't ask, I don't know why it takes the laptops 3 days to get up to date
Though I am wondering if they come with a volume licenced key on there already... because they are all coming from one master image that someone here, made, long ago

12:59 PM
@JourneymanGeek Uh, windows 7 compatible updates. Yeah, no magic tricks means 3+ days

Wsus offline updates is very nice if you want to have that speeded up

TIL...

i just checked my fivers and i only have AE60 numbers...

what is it with trump and walls? bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-38228037

@Burgi I don't know, but he is the Person of the Year for reinventing the wall, apparently

Bob
@Burgi maybe he meant wors?

@Bob Oh, but his business "organization" can acknowledge that it exists when it's convenient for them

lol

he just can't stand in front of his lunatic supporters and tell them that global warming is a thing, because he'd never get elected that way
if he said that during his campaign, Hillary would have won
he is the ultimate panderer to the stupid

do you think the furry alien that lives on his head and controls him realises what damage it is doing?

1:37 PM
@Burgi yes
@Bob he clearly had trouble getting the sea to pay for it

@JourneymanGeek or the snails

@allquixotic sadly I can't blame him

Legs of different lengths?!

1:41 PM
i had to google what "thigh-gap" was

" legs of different lengths"
Thats discrimination against haggis

o_O?

@djsmiley2k do you not know of the wild haggis? The scrouge of the deserts of scotland?

nods
their mating call sounds like a bagpipe

I mean, how is a haggis supposed to be makin a livin if ye go discrimininatin against them laddie.
@Burgi I don't know of anyone who has heard that sound, and lived to tell the tale.

1:47 PM
'twas a dark an' stormy night!
the hoots of a haggis rang out across the glen sending fear deep inae the hearts o' men
ye cannae know tha terror of...
THE NIGHT OF THE ENRAGED HAGGIS!!!!
in cinemas July 2017

we should get @Annaduh to do the sacred haggis prevention dance
my revelations appear to have frightened the room into stunned silence

@Burgi I wonder if @Annaduh will be able to follow the instructions :)

its taught in school in scotland

Bob
2:04 PM
I opened chat to find... haggis.

THE INVASION HAS BEGUN!

Points finger -> @JourneymanGeek He started it!

This is entirely plausible yes.

it might be too late for @Annaduh to do the dance
as the most northern person here i might have to attempt it

Bob
*backs away*

2:09 PM
can we get the room message changed to include haggis?

thinking to buy a microphone which decrypts any cipher-text by listening to the sound of processor.

@Burgi me hides and refuses to dance (I'm Northerer than you)

how much it costs?

@Burgi Done :)

2:11 PM
lol

@AlanWatch er. A lot of money.

@DavidPostill I don't have backup. What should I do?

and chances are the mossad would be after you.

@AlanWatch More than you can afford! ;)

You could probably buy sufficiently sensitive instrumentation for a not-too-insane amount, but the decryption would be up to you

2:13 PM
@arda buy more haggis

@arda Make one RIGHT NOW! :)

@DavidPostill just messin with ya

here's the paper

@arda I'm shocked! You lied! :)

people having backups is indeed (unfortunately) shocking

2:17 PM
lol
I'm looking at my backup folder
and I don't remember what one of these machines is

Ugh after a month of (partial - /home/ only) backups, the backups folder in external drive is already taking 100gb :/

100GB is still tolerable

OMFG!!!! ROFL!!!! my minion just put on a northern accent and tried to say "our kid"

Worst thing is that I can't limit this backup thingy to only keep like 3 backups. It'll keep at least 6 months of backups, at least until the drive fills up - then it'll remove somestuff

my old laptop was damaged..I took the hard disk out for external storage..now I'm wondering what to do with its CPU and network adapter.

2:25 PM
Which part was damaged?

wtf? You can buy a notepad++ thong!
2

Doing something with CPU might not be easy, but you can probably use the network adapter elsrwhere.

actually only graphic card has stopped working which could have been repaired but then the laptop was old so I bought the new one
it happened 2 months ago

I'll probably need to buy a new pc too soon :/
Ram is dying, network card is dying, ssd is dying (not really, it's at like %25 of max write, but hell, that's a lot).

@arda not much you can do with a laptop CPU
wifi cards ... you can get a adaptor, but usually not worth it

2:29 PM
in laptops even dedicated graphic cards are soldered unlike in desktop where you can plug it out very easily so I was left with 2 options..either to make it work without GPU or replace it with extra cost
isn't your ssd dying too early?

I had it for about 1.5 years and I do abuse storage devices.

you should still prefer hard disk..it's not a right generation for a ssd

Not really.

@AlanWatch modern SSDs last quite a bit
@arda 1.5 years isn't that long

compare ssd with hdd..except speed, hdd wins in all other categories

2:32 PM
Not really.

..... lolwhut?
HDD's are only better in terms of cost/gb

long life?

My laptop has 8gb of ddr3l ram, some haswell i5, and well, it used to take a lot to boot, open programs... anything, really. I got a cheap samsung ssd and it's really much, much faster.

@arda my last laptop was a sandy bridge

@AlanWatch HDDs last around 10 years. SSDs do too.

2:33 PM
still works fine other than the battery

Oh yup, my keyboard and battery are also dead.

@JourneymanGeek lul

my hdd is 6yrs old..spent 5yrs in old laptop and now using it as external

A: How damaged is my SSD disc

Journeyman GeekThe idea that SSDs are fragile snowflakes that will melt under the white heat of data is a bit of a mistake. Many tests have been done where drives have been torture tested - tech report did one with last generation drives, here's an ongoing one and basically its PRETTY hard to kill a modern SS...

I have an answer for this toooooo

@arda what will you do with your internal wifi adapter?

2:35 PM
My old SSD is about 4 years, moved it from my desktop to my laptop tho
@arda what exactly do you do to your laptops? ._.

I kept my old laptop so that I can use its screen as external monitor but for that I've to buy a connector which is not that much cheap

@AlanWatch I took out the HDD from this one and I also use it as external. I ran speed test on that before switching to SSD, and well, even after 1.5 years of abuse on that (my laptop is 3 years old, used HDD on first 1.5 years, moved to SSD after that), it was around half the speed compared to the time I first got my pc. In my case, SSD is much, much more durable.
Also I accidentally washed a solid state storage device (I picked this naming as well, it was a USB drive. I had to open it up and clean the water, but it survived.) a few days ago, and well, it survived without rice treatment. Try that with a spinning drive!

where can i ask questions about osticket?
webapps?

@AlanWatch they aren't necessarily hard to find or expensive, so nothing much.

@arda 30-40 dollars?
@arda Also, kinda annoying when you have to work out what sorta adaptor you need

2:40 PM
one can use screen, storage, ram again..but what about internal wifi adapter , speakers and cpu?

@JourneymanGeek I used to be a hardcore gamer. I have over 3500 hours of play time on this pc. That, as you can guess, damaged the ram, keyboard and battery a lot.

@AlanWatch speakers eh, usually not worth it
CPU is tricky
@arda eh, I guess
wifi adaptors are mini pcie or m.2 these days, used to be mini pci
the adaptors for desktops are cheap but there's few situations where that makes sense
and if you buy a new laptop, except in a few cases, its likely to have a better card
and some brands have a whitelist
Even ram, depends on age

IT COMES OFTEN AND THEN SOON THE COMPUTER HANGS
OFTEN!

I've done major swaparoos with ddr3l boxen
My beebox came with 2gb. I bought 2x4, installed that, moved the 2gb to my old gigabyte nuc (the third one, I had 2 fail under warranty) and moved the 4gb from that into my old laptop for 8gb....
but would be tricky with a new machine if it used DDR4

so, uh, any good pcs coming up?

2:49 PM
I'm kinda loving my blade stealth
Not a gaming box, and I bought it at the tail end of this model (the new one has more ram, longer battery life and a newer processor)

2:59 PM
Uh

lul talk talk

can someone please link some good reading material?

y u so bad
@Rahul2001 any perticular subject?

I need to get my mind of things
@djsmiley2k Not really
Anything will do

Strč prst skrz krk ( listen ) is a Czech and Slovak tongue-twister meaning "stick your finger through your throat". The sentence is well known for having a total absence of vowels, the nucleus of each syllable being a syllabic r, a common feature amongst many Slavic languages. It is often used as an example of such a phrase when learning Czech or Slovak as a foreign language. In fact, both Czech and Slovak have two syllabic liquid consonants, the other being syllabic l. (There is also the syllabic bilabial nasal m in sedm in Czech.) As a result, there are plenty of words without vowels. Examples...
