ok

unix i'd suggest more for multi user setups, but if it's just for you then superuser.
this is just my opinion

It appears I may have forgotten to connect my power button
It also appears changing my graphics settings in Star Trek Online has caused me to fall through the floor of the level
Being in space however it's odd that the space station's artificial gravity continues working the same once I've fallen through the bottom of it...

5:35 PM

@djsmiley2k GIVE KITTEH

you'd have to fight my daughter

5:53 PM
@djsmiley2k Is that the same cat/kitten as in the other picture?

yup

@djsmiley2k It's not obvious seeing different sides of his face :)

@DavidPostill oh? seems obivous to me but he's here so yeah,
2 kittens, one completely black, the other tabb

@djsmiley2k One side has a lot more white fur than the other?

they don't stay still long enough for me to notice XD

5:57 PM
lol

Hello!

@Rahul2001 A stranger joins the room ... ;p

now they play flightingheh

Haven't seen you for a while ...

@DavidPostill I'm so proud of my first Code Golf answer (it's in batch): codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/102084/63023
@DavidPostill yeah, studies and stuff going on

6:00 PM
What's amazing is how quickly they are changing

Golfing Languages spoil all the fun :/

yesterday they would jump at everything, today they only jump if you're moving towards them
and this evening they almost don't care.

@Rahul2001 Hmm. Nice try but "every 0.25 seconds"? ;p

We fit... no. you do not.

@djsmiley2k That's good. It means your new owners are less afraid of you :)
@Hennes lol

6:03 PM
@DavidPostill eh, timeout doesn't work for fractions of seconds
Could work some magic with ping though

@Rahul2001 Exactly!

Hello @Hennes. I have tagged you in a comment.

@Rahul2001 No. Ping will only do 1 second timers as well :)

Guess what can delay with millisecond precision ;)

@DavidPostill meh...

6:06 PM
`lspci` will list all PCI (or PCI-e) devices. Chipsets should show up on them.
I got no thorough well defined answer yet though

@BenN POWERSHELL... Yes we know, we know :)

@Hennes I just don't know what to look for.

With the PCI ID you can look up which device it is (like this post does under win7: superuser.com/questions/657879/…)

@BenN Someone already did the Powershell answer. Can you improve it? :)

@Hennes Where do I find the ID?

6:08 PM
Most of the time though I simply look in the manual of the motherboard.

lshw

lspci shows you the ID,

lspci -vvv iirc

@djsmiley2k Yes, those kinds of commands. Depending on OS and distribution

0
A: Loading... Forever

jyaoPowerShell 57 Bytes for(){'|','\','-','/'|%{"loading...$_";sleep -m 250;cls}}

6:09 PM
or is it lspci -k D:

I have not used Linux in 1 or 2 years though, so assume I am not up tp date wioth that

wow i don't have lspci on this server

@djsmiley2k -k gives me kernel modules associated with the PCI devices.

ah it's -v or -vv or -vvv then

going from memory, -v was more verbose
Including showing names rather than IDs

6:11 PM
How do I find the ID then? @Hennes
Oh wow. There's clippy in this chatroom. :-)

[root@dragon ~]# lspci -v

wheres the id in that output tho?> :/

Intel Corporation 5100 Chipset Memory Controller kind of gave it away (I already knew it was an 5100 chipset, so that made it easy for me)
Which motherboard do you have?
And which OS is running?

Arch Linux
mobo is Gigiabyte Gaming something something 3
Gigabyte G1 Gaming 3 (Full Atx)

For some reason, my laptop's USB 3.0 ports tend to drop connections during large, high-speed transfers. Is there an explanation for this? This is not specific to the device: it happens with any USB 3.0 device capable of moving more than 100 MB/s.
Is this a USB controller issue or what?

@timotree Just based ont hat, probably Z170 chipset

@Hennes I already know the chipset! I want to know the northbridge and southbridge names/IDs.

6:30 PM
I got the gaming 7
It is a Skylake setup with 100 series chipset. There is no Noth and south bridge
Let me backtrack with some history
Way in the past CPU where box boxes and computers full of chips
in due time the CPU could be put in a single chip (micro processor)
And most of the lectronic condensed into about 3 big chips

Our car is the Impala. We are far from home. We need help. Can you make our tree go?

(about 286/386 era)
A few gnerations later we got this down to twi big chips.
One for high speed (NB) one for the rest (SB)
Today we managed to cram a lot of the NB functionality on the CPU die, and the remaining stuff on a single chip.
In your case the Intel-GL82Z170-PCH chipset
in short: Z170

Intel desktop processors aren't SoCs. The upcoming AMD Zen processors, though, will all be SoCs.

VBS might be able to help out
@DavidPostill Notice how instead of >nul I've just used >l
Which also works

I kinda think this is a USB signal integrity issue. Some devices are better than others but the issue happens independent of port.
...okay, this is a signal integrity issue. A different cable is not giving the same issues.
The new USB 3.0 cables I just bought are doing this constantly.
My laptop seems to be abnormally picky about USB 3.0 signal integrity.
Perhaps some clip-on ferrite beads might help...
My laptop's USB ports have always been abnormally sensitive to interference.

bwDracoFor some odd reason, my Roccat Kone XTD gaming mouse likes to disconnect by itself when I plug in, disconnect, or otherwise manipulate other devices that are attached to my computer. Q: How can I improve USB EMI insensitivity?

jippieI have several devices and some long cables on my PC's USB buses and every now and then I get a message like hub 6-0:1.0: port 2 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling... on my Linux machine. Especially the devices on my desk (keyboard, mouse, 2 Arduino's) are being disconnected and reconnected. The...

@bwDraco you sure they aren't just bad cables?

It happens with other USB 3.0 devices.
My laptop's USB ports are just abnormally sensitive to EMI.
I'm wondering where my laptop may be coupling noise...
Tried disconnecting other peripherals, didn't help.
I'm going to have to add a ferrite bead.

7:16 PM
You know who's a bad cable? I'm a bad cable!

Yet another reason to get a new PC.

Any ideas on how to resolve USB 3.0 EMI issues?
Will ferrite beads help?
@allquixotic, any ideas?
(yes, I measured my cables)

I am not an electrician, but they might actually hurt.
There are ferro magnetic. So they act on different in voltage causing difference in magnetic field which .....

@bwDraco I have a bunch of various sized ferrite beads, which I've found to be tremendously useful to cancel out EMI in analog 3.5mm audio cables, but on one occasion actually caused my USB cable to stop working altogether until I removed the bead

They should npot blocl DC, but will block a range of AC

Will they interfere with USB 3.0 signals?

And at 5GHz signal rate I have no idea is that is mostly ignored or blocked.

7:39 PM
@bwDraco don't know, they might

I want the cable to reject outside noise.

It does not differentiate between outside or inside (is that evena thing?) noise
It just damps alternating signals in a certain frequency range.

the data signal produces a strong enough magnetic field in some cables that installing a ferrite bead will affect the magnetic field enough to damage the signal to the point that it's just indecipherable noise to the other end

I guess the problem is my laptop, though cables can exacerbate it.

Yes, finally someone else but me who uses exacerbate
Last time I used it I was asked to explian what it meant.

7:42 PM
These aren't exactly low-quality cables.
They're just longer than most (6 ft); this is increasing susceptibility to EMI.
The higher the data rate, the more likely the hub is going to drop the connection.

are they running alongside other cables?
You might be able to mitigate the interference by just moving the cables.

Doesn't seem to be alien crosstalk, already tried disconnecting other devices.

cfl bulbs?

@djsmiley2k I doubt this is the issue. I've even unplugged my laptop.

eco lights be bad man

7:49 PM
Linux has this message: port X disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling...

So you're plugging a hub into your laptop and the data rate from hub to laptop is poor?

It disconnects at USB 3.0 data rates. The higher the data rate, the more likely it is to disconnect.
It even caused my USB 3.0-capable camera to freeze during transfer, perhaps due to the unexpected response from the laptop (though I normally remove the card and use the media reader)
Not a hub, but pretty much any USB 3.0 device.

Could be a dodgy hub?
Oh. Internal hub, got it.

@Hennes So my mobo just has a chipset? (No north or south bridges?)

Your chipset consists of one chip.
It weird to call a set of 1 a set, but hey, historical reasons.

7:55 PM
Ungrounded USB ports?

Okay, so that means the coreboot chart is just out-of-date.
Than you!
s/han/hank/

Coreboot had a long way to go when I last head them at FOSDEM (2015 IIRC)
A nice firmware, fast, but still limited to a few chipsets.
And with only a handfull of developers there is not that much they can do to keep up.

why are apple chargers so expensive?

> apple

Because they have a monopoly on the chargers so they can charge whatever they want to. No competition.
(Also nobody wants to compete for lightning cables when they're inferior to type-c)

8:10 PM
@allquixotic Would a ferrite bead impact the signal being transmitted within the cable?
I thought they just help reject noise going in and out of the cable.

Is it better to accept a worse answer from someone with less rep to help them climb the ranks or accept a better answer from someone with high rep?

a signal is noise
accept the best answer

@timotree Always accept the best answer.
You can always upvote an answer you like, but don't accept.

ferrite beads don't differentiate between signals, other than on frequency
As per wikipedia 'A design that uses a ferrite bead to improve noise filtering must take into account specific circuit characteristics and the frequency range to block. Different ferrite materials have different properties with respect to frequency, and manufacturer's literature helps select the most effective material for the frequency range.'
so, just clipping a bead on may or may not do what you want.

@bwDraco Did you place the cable straight through the bead, or wrap it around once?

8:20 PM
@MichaelFrank I just found out you can upvote multiple answers.
That's great. Then I can do both!

I'm not going to wrap it around. One ferrite bead will be placed at each end of the cable (I have not yet ordered).

but it might actually be the cables
or the laptop

8:45 PM
Start with one bead at the end of a cable.
Test, if it does not improve feel free to try with a second bead.

@Hennes I would try one bead, once on each end first.

^---- amazing answers there!

10:42 PM
Wrapping aluminum foil around the cable seems to be helping ._.
That just proves it's EMI.
(USB 3.0 cable hooked up to external SSD)
I previously could never get the Anvil's Storage Utilities benchmark to run to completion; the connection would just drop in the middle of a transfer.
Having to shield the cable like this is no fun :\
(SSD in enclosure only supporting up to SATA 3 Gb/s)

So, new cable time I suppose?

10:58 PM
This is my old, short cable, which would still drop the connection at very high transfer speeds.
The new cables are worse because they are longer and therefore more likely to couple noise onto the line.
I'm getting ferrite beads and will determine whether they address the issue.
My laptop is abnormally sensitive to interference.

11:14 PM
What is the proper flag for something that should be on stackoverflow?

@Bob up?
Yyup apparrently so
So guess what, turns out my Xperia Z3 Compact does quick charge too, 9v 1A. However it charges at full speed nomatter whether the screen is on or off, so it seems to be OEM specific rather than Android-wide
Either that or Sony has specifically turned it off - which wouldn't be surprising
AFAIK Sony are the only ones to implement a "Do not connect automatically" flag in Wireless settings

@timotree There's an option to migrate under close, I believe.

@timotree

bleh... besides turning off animations, is there no way to permanently fix this?

@DavidPostill I don't think I'm allowed to do close votes.

11:22 PM
Samsung of course, are doing the exact opposite, making it impossible to not connect to a network -_-

It seems every answer is to either kill dwm.exe or turn off the context menu animations.

@MichaelFrank why are you using IE?

@timotree Hmmph. I don't have a low rep sock to test with.

@Burgi Because corporate environment?

What do I do if someone keeps editing my answer to remove formatting?
I've rolledback once but they rolledback the rollback.

11:24 PM
@MichaelFrank fair enough

@timotree link?

chrome has some nice Group Policy extensions
@timotree the changes are valid

@timotree you can often flag to migrate but on a busy site like this, chances are someone who can close would have voted.

@timotree I found it. The edits are okay. Headings should break up entire sections, not codeblocks.

11:25 PM
My problem is not that it's on superuser
Somebody told me that's fine
@MichaelFrank I use headings for anything that's not prose or code and then structure my formatting accordingly.

@timotree That edit looks OK to me - your text doesn't have to be that large :)

Okay.
It feels so empty without an headers though :-)

@timotree Use headings sparingly - they really stand out :)

But my message needs to stand out to get the checkmark and get that oh so important rep :-)

@timotree You could use ### headers (they are the smallest) ...

11:30 PM
@timotree standing out is less important then having the correct answer

I guess.

Rep isn't the objective here either. It's like going for kills over playing the objective in Overwatch. ;)
@Burgi Oh, also that screenshot wasn't mine. Just the first one I could find to show the problem. :P

@MichaelFrank: Preparing to deploy CM14.1 on phone and tablet...

@MichaelFrank Difference being that in SE for someone as low rep as me I need to gain rep in order to unlock features that allow me to make a bigger difference.

@MichaelFrank I thought that's bounties :

omg..... my dad is turning into a proper grumpy old man

Hmm. Only on phone right now.

Tho at this point I play for badges

@JourneymanGeek tbh, I only played Overwatch twice during a free weekend.

11:37 PM
i play for stars on the starwall

I mostly play Destiny.

@timotree tbh as long as you're consistent, you will get there

btw guys NMS, the updates are really good

@JourneymanGeek Bounties are nice. I got one today :) No competition from Harry though ...

@DavidPostill I've been trawling that part of the site for my 100k and legendary badge :p
Good fun trying to remember apps with generic names.

11:42 PM
you are already legendary in our eyes @JourneymanGeek

I think I have a certain bounty in the bag but I won't link you because you might compete with me. :)

@timotree lol - there aren't many to look through ...

you mean this one?

@timotree you're welcome to it. That said, if you can steal a bounty off Harry, it's cool.

It has a vote but the OP already said it doesn't fit their needs.
Lol thank you

I'm pretty certain you need something clever like a lock file with today's date. I don't do Macs tho

@timotree You are safe from me. I mostly only answer Windows questions and more general *nix questions. Not Macs.

Bootloader, baseband, and vendor images updated.

Oh. I've actually answered 24 questions. That's a surprise :)

11:54 PM
...nope. My phone no longer boots up. Reverting to the last bootloader image...

@bwDraco You're brave.

Reverted vendor and baseband as well, device now starts. Obviously, something is wrong.
Besides, preferred kernel is not available for CM14.1 so I'm going to wait.
