A: System Image Backup & Recovery - on a new Disk

Journeyman GeekTLDR: Yes it will work, and you can restore an image of windows 10 to a new hard drive with the " Backup and Recovery (Windows 7)" tool The whole point of a system image is to be able to restore if your disk dies or otherwise goes nuts. Yes, it should work, assuming the backup's fine. As for th...

In computing on Microsoft platforms, WoW64 (Windows 32-bit on Windows 64-bit) is a subsystem of the Windows operating system capable of running 32-bit applications that is included in all 64-bit versions of Windows—including Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, IA-64 and x64 versions of Windows Server 2003, as well as 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. In Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core, it is an optional component. In Nano Server it is not present. WoW64 aims to take care of many of the differences between...

It's got infected folders

reinstalling really is the only way to be sure
That said, have you tried an AV/Anti malware livedisk?
How do you know its infected?

multiple scans on different anti-malware show files called trojan.dll

delete it from a linux livecd (after a backup)
Reinstall, cause its the only way to be sure
Pick one ;)

Q: How can I remove malicious spyware, malware, adware, viruses, trojans or rootkits from my PC?

GnoupiWhat should I do if my Windows computer seems to be infected with a virus or malware? What are the symptoms of an infection? What should I do after noticing an infection? What can I do to get rid of it? This question comes up frequently, and the suggested solutions are usually the same. Th...

Folks, would this be on-topic for SuperUser? I'm inclined to migrate it, because it's a wrong kind if search engine bait for EE.SE, and a right kind for SuperUser.

Q: How to attenuate a (seemingly) overdriven VGA signal

Geo...I own an 8 port Belkin OmiPro2 KVM switch, which is a device used to connect multiple computers to a single display/mouse/keyboard. I've owned this KVM for years and it has exhibited the same symptom since I purchased it, so this is not a new behavior. Basically, when I connect this KVM to a CR...

WHAT THE WHAT THE WHAAAAAAT?
@NickAlexeev the answer seems out of our scope

@JourneymanGeek Too much math for yall, eh? It could make a nice diversion.

@NickAlexeev the answer is "build a thing"
which is MOSTLY out of our scope

5:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek Fine, we'll keep the whole thing on EE.SE then.

Q: All computers and smart phones in one house break down within a few days

Candida WileyThe computers and smart phones in my brother's house have all broken down even a few days after purchase. THere is no internet connection. His wife believes he is inserting malicious code into everything and is divorcing him. He has not done this thing.

when Amazon Prime Now's app updates claiming "performance improvements", does that mean the packages get delivered faster? :)

No, it means its employees are paid less, optimising for Amazon. :)

and bug fixes = firing bad employees who keep packages and mark them as delivered?

4:21 PM
@Hennes Next on your workplace's firewall: "LaTeX image rendering" blocked as NSFW

This question was closed as a duplicate of one that's now deleted. Can we reopen it and close it as a dupe of the canonical recovery one?

6:30 PM
IMO it is BS that anyone should have to read through that canedical answer to figure out how to unformat a quick formatted drive.

The last non-deleted answer on the canonical uses TestDisk, which seems fairly straightforward

used to be that "unformat" was a (3rd party) cmd line the size of a few K, and you could blink a drive back again in seconds, back in XP where it was low likely that a person had also zeroed.

@BenN Done - nice opportunity to make use of my dupe hammer to reopen and then immediately close again :)

Thanks!

Any ideas on how I could use an old 250GB hard drive?
(Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, single-platter version.)
The drive's been secure-erased and I could format it at any time.

maake a pov device?

7:13 PM
I could get an SSD of the same capacity for less than $100...

...my router can act as a file server if I plug something into the USB or eSATA ports, but not sure if I want to do this.
I don't have an unused hard drive enclosure or dock right now.

ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Heh.

I called vodafone a minute ago to complain
and guess what? Speed was back to acceptable levels
Just a few minutes after call ended, I did the speedtest above, the 1.47mbps one.

I've dealt with bad Internet connections before.

MY LIFE IS A BAD INTERNET CONNECTION AT THIS POINT
I used an acceptable internet only once
I can't even stream anythin
I can't game

@bwDraco the project that most of us are more likely to actually use: a hard drive turned cell phone charger that also functions as an LED desk lamp and hidden flash drive.

I can't even torrent ubuntu isos in less than a day
I don't even have the mood for streaming some movies anymore. I love my ISP.

7:57 PM
well if you do manage to stream a few movies, try "Need For Speed" and "Wired" :-)

I wanted to stream The Wind Rises (for the third time), the last movie of Hayao Miyazaki. I don't really like watching movies, but I really like miyazaki's movies.
They are pieces of art, not just movies.

1 hour later…
9:10 PM
Netflix is giving me a really weird Android bug.
I can login on any PC and mobile device I have at home.
Except on my wife's brand new Xperia Z3. Which was logged on until a few hours ago.
No errors, nothing. Suddenly started complaining generic "server errors".
While I was watching cartoons on my own computer (yes, I watch cartoons, judge me).
I disconnected just to check, and now the login circle spins forever.
Cleared app data, reinstalled Netflix, rebooted Android... Nothing.
No, wait. Now it returns to the "intro" screen from the login dialog.
I know it talks to the server because if I enter the wrong pass it complains.
Correct pass => back to the intro screen.

@ThatBrazilianGuy consider yourself judged; and we, the people, find you guilty!

Dog
!!doge guilty

    wow
so guilty

Bah. Whatever.

9:57 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy did you see if youtube streaming works (even though your not even close to streaming) ?

Not yet. Android is updating again for the 3rd time (that I know of). I think in three days it's experienced all versions from 4.4 to 5.1.1 so far.

what is the method that device connects with Wi-Fi? did you try the LTE junk?
oh updating that'll fix it NOT! :-)

@Psycogeek I have a b/g AP. I did try with LTE. Same result.
> I think in three days it's experienced all versions from 4.4 to 5.1.1 so far.
Just the current download is 1.2 GB... +_+"

10:55 PM
@bwDraco I use my old drives as 'scratch' storage
for things like download

So I called Netflix support and told them "I already did this and that and that".
"Ok sir, so there's a few steps to solve this issue, I'm sending them to your inbox"
The steps were exactly what I told him I'd already done.
But now the phone got updated to Android 6.1 and Netflix works again.

Q: How do I "Install" Linux?

VaylTaking my first Linux course and, ironically, I think I've hit a problem that could be fixed by someone proficient in Linux! Q: How to put a External Attena on a wireless card

epicdig07I have a USB wireless card and the listing said the following (If any use) "Mini 150Mbps USB WiFi Wireless Adapter Network LAN Card 802.11n/g/b 2.4GHz". I am wondering how I could put an external Antenna (like the picture below) on this card or a similar one. Can I just solder leads to the Ant...

. . . press 27 to speak to our robot in English
@NickAlexeev why cant you tell him how to wire in and tune the antenna , and use a meter to test it and all?
complete with wave theory diatribe copied and pasted from the web, and how to assemble a $50 signal booster, from a kit and add it to a $2 dongle :-)

@Psycogeek Does that fellow strike you like someone who has got skills or equipment to do that? A person with skills and equipment would not ask that question in the first place.

ahh just tell em to find a squiggly line on the green board, and stuff it on there.

11:54 PM
@NickAlexeev eh. Not really something I consider worth migrating
