12:02 AM
Ironically the wifi between my phone and laptop is now the most unreliable hop, necessitating I switch to bluetooth
But with 2G it's really just as fast anyway

Dog
Basically takes about the same amount of time to display the BBC desktop site over RDP as it does to load the mobile site on my phone
It's even faster when it comes to more complex site slike Arstechnica. That said, once you've loaded it on your phone, you can scroll the entire page without any further latency
Also this 2G experiement is getting kinda painful now with Windows update and windows error reporting both hogging the connection -_-
Thanks to Microsoft in their infinite wisdom making it impossible to mark a bluetooth tethered connection as "Metered"
@JourneymanGeek CDMA is... 3G no?

No
I don't think its even 2g
Its basically what the americans invented instead of using GSM

Dog
CDMA2000 (also known as C2K or IMT Multi‑Carrier (IMT‑MC)) is a family of 3G mobile technology standards for sending voice, data, and signaling data between mobile phones and cell sites. It is developed by 3GPP2 as a backwards-compatible successor to second-generation cdmaOne (IS-95) set of standards and used especially in North America and South Korea. CDMA2000 compares to UMTS, a competing set of 3G standards, which is developed by 3GPP and used in Europe, Japan, and China. The name CDMA2000 denotes a family of standards that represent the successive, evolutionary stages of the underlying...
> CDMA2000 1X (IS-2000), also known as 1x and 1xRTT, is the core CDMA2000 wireless air interface standard. The designation "1x", meaning 1 times Radio Transmission Technology, indicates the same radio frequency (RF) bandwidth as IS-95: a duplex pair of 1.25 MHz radio channels. The 1X standard supports packet data speeds of up to 153 kbit/s with real world data transmission averaging 80–100 kbit/s in most commercial applications.

heh
Looks about right

Dog
12:10 AM
From the looks of your question your biggest problem there was latency and really really shitty provider
My guess would be super congested satellite backhaul

Dog
I had something similar back in China many years ago, pings of 1500-3000 to anywhere useful

I was smack in the middle of ... nowhere important, and cell phones weren't that much of a thing then
Now its great

Dog
Lots of places here are going straight from 90's generation 2G to 4G/4G+
Basically going from the likes of 20kbps mobile connectivity to 20,000 to 200,000kbps

makes sense

Dog
12:13 AM
When I went to Singapore there was basically no time I was ever outside LTE coverage
(The exception of when I was in the swimming pool of the hotel with a boat on the top)
Water blocks microwaves and RF signals better than a faraday cage :-/

lol
I work there
tho apparently if we go to the skypark without something to do there, they'll fire us :(

Dog
aka you're not allowed to use the job as a free pass to use the skypark... makes sense

more or less

Dog
tbh there's so many staff there (hundreds to low thousands?) I wouldn't be surprised if some would take advantage

and people sneak in pretending to be guests

Dog
12:15 AM
Well that's why there's access cards and what not

Dog
Mind you we used to use our staff rail passes a bit like that
Casual, part-time, contractor staff, who maybe did 4 hours a week... signed up just to get the staff rail pass to go anywhere in the country for free
By we I mean not me of course cough

Of course not ;p

Dog
I did like 16 hours a day

In theory I'm also not supposed to gamble at the casino
Not that I would anyway

Dog
12:18 AM
Using the pass to get home after a 16 hour shift dropping you off over 100 miles from home is hardly abusive >_>
@JourneymanGeek I'd have assumed they'd be more strict about the casino than the skypark

not at all

Dog
After all locals have to pay huge fees to enter the casino anyway, no?

@Dog wierdly? If I can be arsed to go through the queue for my casino pass, no one cares

Dog
Huh

I've gone into a few places my pass dosen't officially allow me for work by wagging my tail asking nicely
BUT if I tried to pay the money to go into the casino, they'd reject me and I'd be fired

Dog
12:20 AM
lol
That makes... zero sense

;p
In theory, I believe the idea is if I was an employee, I could collude with another employee, fix games and win mucho dinero.

Dog
> The possible ninth planet could explain a tilt in the Sun
Calculations suggest a Solar System oddity could be due Planet 9.
God dammit it was way cooler before Pluto got de-planeted, since then the unknown mystery planet was Planet X

Dog
Also I just accidentally quit chrome and closed 500 tabs by pressing comma?! :-/
Thankfully 6-cores at 4Ghz + 64GB RAM makes relaunching 500 tabs a breeze
> SINGAPORE - Police have arrested five people, including a dealer at the Marina Bay Sands casino, for cheating at casino table games.
Is that how you lost your last job?

@Dog why take your phone into the swimming pool? that is just asking for trouble

12:23 AM
Nope

Dog
@Burgi Because I wanted to imitate those youtubers with their underwater selfies and videos and shit

I'm working there now, least till nov

Dog
Sadly neither i or my friends were nearly as good looking as the models featured on Youtube and my video editing skills are certainly not up to par for making something that ends up being a promo shot for the hotel
I did however manage to get some decent shots of the corals while snorkelling, but obviously had to resurface above the water in order to upload them to Facebook since no signal underwater
Surprisingly got 4G though, despite the fact we were like 10 miles out to sea

In singapore or thailand?

Dog
That bit was in Thailand
Singapore
Thailand
Thailand was so serene...
Though I still preferred the food in Singapore

12:35 AM
;p
blah. I hate being expected to go for grocery runs
Even if I can't think of anything I actually need to do today

Dog
<== never goes on grocery runs, ever

eh. I live with my parents. The problem is my brother was never asked to when he was living here

Q: Can I reset D-Link router using a connected device

Ben ShajiI hacked one of my neighbours WiFi using Kali.Anyway,I tried to enter to the router administration page and tried to add Mac address.Suddenly, the page says 'can't load'. Now the router signal had lost.I'm getting only one point signal even I stand nearby. But I can connect. Is there any way I can f...

@Dog That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: triplefacepalm

@ChatBotJohnCavil Is that not what I wrote?
Oh wait it wasnt
Wrong picture
Cooooooooooooooooore!
Core i32

12:53 AM
That might.... take a while

Dog
That was exactly the description I wrote on the photo's comment on Facebook
Ah yes, that's the EC2 GPU box I got for a ridiculously cheap (mis)price
FUUUUUUUUUUUCK my life.
Bye

2 hours later…
2:45 AM
I'm looking at a truly wtfish thing.
that appears to be a clay dog with a propeller in its arse

Bob
3:09 AM
@Dog ? o.O

Might be a misshapen horse
Yeah, the picture is reasonably potato quality. Those CFLs are messing with things and I'm zoomed in

Bob
4:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...as opposed to a real dog..?

If it was a real dog...
Science would have gone too far...
they did have a winged pig tho

8:22 AM
Looks like it was a quiet night for a change. :)

8:40 AM
Lol. Most of the excitement happens here

@JourneymanGeek That's what I meant. There wasn't any ;p

Bob
@Dog :\
yay, taxes

Dog
11:22 AM
Yay antidepressants
Weird things happen when dogs take antidepressants meant for cats and vice versa

Bob
o.O
felling better now?

Man, my current antidepressants made me terrible in like last 2 days

11:51 AM
i.imgur.com/eaalm4w.jpg this RAM is only 1133MHz? sorry a bit blurry
written: "2GB 1Rx8 PC3 - 10600S - 09 - 11 B2" then "M4....- CH9 1133"

Bob
@caub that number is irrelevant - PC3-10600 is always DDR3-1333, which runs at 666 MHz.
(DDR, double data rate, transfers 'twice' per clock tick)
Pretty sure the "1133" is just some random model, etc., number
also, "1333 MHz" is a common misnomer for DDR3-1333.

ah ok thanks, and then best one are 1600MHz I think

@caub for most uses high frequency matters little.
Unless you run a APU

ok

Bob
@caub favour capacity over frequency, usually. also, please stop calling it "1600 MHz" - DDR3-1600 has an I/O clock of 800 MHz.
Also, don't spend more for RAM with a higher frequency than the CPU/mobo supports...

12:06 PM
ok :)) thanks

Anyone play GOW4 on PC with an Xbox One Controller?

Dog
@Bob I thought it was 333Mhz

Bob
@Dog I/O bus clock 666, memory clock 166

Dog
Ah 166
Yeah, quad pumped I/O
x2 for DDR giving 1333MT/s
So much easier back in the days of DDR1 when it was just clock x2
We should all go back to DDR1

12:28 PM
@Ramhound that's awefully specific
has never really been comfortable with controllers, nor has he played any of the GOW games

I have this weird problem my 360 and One controllers navigate the menus differently
my google skills are failing me

ah
might be a question for arquade?

Bob
@Ramhound Look up DirectInput and XInput
(I have no idea what all this is about :P)

12:45 PM
@JourneymanGeek I think it'd fit, ask away

1:17 PM
lol
@Bob or a toilet roll holder from ikea
tho, the one I believe @Sathya has is VERY nice
@Bob is the BL game on hiatus? ;p

1:40 PM
@Bob - That's not my problem on Windows 10, native support, for both controllers. My problem is I am autopicking up weapons on my 360 controller, and I can't navigate the menus with my one controller with the d-pad

Bob
@JourneymanGeek uh... idk?

ah ok ;p
(I was actually busy today, but usually you ask ;p)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol. my psychic powers worked? :P

Yeah, mom needed someone to carry stuff
We went to ikea to hunt down a small tabletop

Bob
@Ramhound DirectInput and XInput are both native, but can have different mappings IIRC

1:49 PM

@Bob - All I know Mafia III works fine. I suspect its some setting or something else is going on the sensitivity of the aiming is also weird.

Dog
Urgh, Truecrypt/Veracrypt performance is terrible
It's still basically worse than single threaded
@Bob No
Worse
But meh
!!caaaaaaaaat

Bob
@Dog :(

Dog
Urgh and bitlocker is a pain to find on a vm?!
@Bob Meh, same old same old. I've been this way for years

Dog
2:19 PM
On the plus side, Bitlocker is a million times faster than Veracrypt, is multithreaded, and basically transparent performance wise.
On the negative side, re-encrypting 5TB drive is going to take forever

0_0
Why do you need the whole drive encrypted?

Dog
2:35 PM
@JourneymanGeek As opposed to what, just the filenames?

er, I donno, seperated encrypted containers, maybe?
or not at all, depending...

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Well it's one partition with one giant folder, so I dunno how you'd containerize that...
I think I'll just reformat it, and re-transfer all the data over
Quicker than decrypting and re-encrypting in place, when it's only 1/3rd full, plus I only copied over the data yesterday
Just found a one inch long white hair on my arm, wtf

A: What is a mutex?

XetiusWhen I am having a big heated discussion at work, I use a rubber chicken which I keep in my desk for just such occasions. The person holding the chicken is the only person who is allowed to talk. If you don't hold the chicken you cannot speak. You can only indicate that you want the chicken an...

Dog
So what exactly is a mutex

Bob
@JourneymanGeek now I'm considering the Acer monitor again... now $400 :P chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/118?m=30942393#30942393
which is actually less than Crossover

Its getting colder outside, and even the copmms room froze again.

4:16 PM
@Dog You really don't know? It's a magic token allowing you to do something. If you don't have the token you can't do it and you have to wait for the token. For example, use to prevent two threads accessing the same resource at the same time.

what is latex?

On Windows, it also works across processes

LaTex is the deity of text writing.

LaTeX (/ˈlɑːtɛx/ LAH-tekh, also pronounced as /ˈlɑːtɛk/ LAH-tek or /ˈleɪtɛk/ LAY-tek, a shortening of Lamport TeX) is a document preparation system. When writing, the writer uses plain text as opposed to formatted text, as in WYSIWYG word processors like Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. The writer uses markup tagging conventions to define the general structure of a document (such as article, book, and letter), to stylise text throughout a document (such as bold and italic), and to add citations and cross-references. A TeX distribution such as TeX Live or MikTeX is used to produce an output...

Hint: do not search for latex images at work.

4:23 PM
lol
@jokerdino Think rubber gloves :)

4:38 PM
@Hennes you just made me want to do that

Success! :)

<fired

Not at work.
Doing something and wanting to do something are different things.

Except I did do that

On your own device and not on a work laptop?

4:40 PM
@Hennes Every computer is a work computer when you don't have a job :/

4:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek I have a pretty low cost Brainwavz one.. does the job well :D
/cc @Bob

Dog
5:19 PM
> A Mutex is a mutually exclusive flag. It acts as a gate keeper to a section of code allowing one thread in and blocking access to all others.
Well that explains it better than the rubber chicken

But the rubber chicken has more votes.

Dog
5:39 PM
Votes for funny does not a good answer make
Dammit I have another party to go to

6:32 PM
Nov 7 '12 at 14:38, by allquixotic
well it DOES kind of impact the rest of the world because one of the things where the presidential candidates differ slightly more is on foreign policy

also, your election is flooding every newspaper/site
It's been 4 years already!!

After close to threr years, it seems the thermal compound on this laptop's GPU needs to be replaced. It's running progressively hotter and hotter even with moderate loads. 🙁

Q: Does heat sink compound degrade with time?

Lord Loh.Does heat sink compound degrade with time? How long isv it recommended before I replace my CPU heat sink compound? I have a DELL Studio 17" notebook with core i7 from the lastv one and av half years and it is making more fan noise now than when it was new. Is it time to clean up the heat sink an...

It's IC Diamond and I'll probably get a pro to replace it.
CPU is still fine.
Temperature spikes up higher (and exhaust temperatures lower) when load is applied indicating heatsink is less able to remove heat than before.
I'm not confident enough to do it myself.
So, let a pro do it or try it myself?
I have a copy of the service manual on me...
Warranty expires in less than three months.

7:52 PM
if you're not comfortable, just get a pro to do it.
It's not worth maybe getting it wrong

8:19 PM
...it's not worth saving ~$50 to potentially damage the system.
Found a good local repair shop, will bring it in at an appropriate time.

@bwDraco you already cleare dthe dust out?

Yes. It's not an airflow issue.
