12:00 AM
Knwoing there is a new "method" this CatchWord HTML5 to do extensive things, i was trying to find buttons and methods by which to control or stop any of that from occuring. I assume at this point that stopping all scripting still would stop HTML5 things?

ahh the super laptop to desktop docking cooler :-) now they just need to add in the super GPU 8x 3.0 usb and disk tower.
I am not even sure how useful it would be, not being a laptop user. that a person could COMPLETELY replace a desktop with a full features dockable laptop. One system to take care of, 2 purposes to it.

Bob
1:02 AM
@JourneymanGeek that seems completely pointless
Why not just use a typical heat pipe?
More compact.
Oh, docking.
So it's not so much a water-cooled laptop as it is a water-cooled dock.

1:22 AM
@Bob It looks like the dock connects to the ports at the back of the laptop and... does heat things to it? o.O
I guess those are either heat transfer pipes... I wouldn't be super thrilled with having a dock potentially start squirting liquid at my laptop.

1:51 AM
@Bob: as I said 0_0

1 hour later…
Bob
2:54 AM
ok
pebble replaced and working

3:17 AM
oh, that was quick. What did they end up doing?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek just replaced it at the store I bought it from :P
the charger pisses me off
stupid magnetic crap keeps disconnecting

3:47 AM
Well, decided to monetize my YouTube videos today.
Not much on the account, but AdSense application was approved within a couple of hours and ads are already shown on videos.
This is in anticipation for a new video I'm currently uploading (and will still need a while to finish).
(Sadly, cable internet installation has been postponed for two weeks due to an issue with my father—not going into more detail.)

@DragonLord I got 15k views and 6 subscribers from the one video I ever uploaded.

Five videos and about 2200 hits over the last 28 months.
This next one is probably going to generate a lot more hits.
Hopefully, it'll be up in a few hours.
It's my first 1080p video, shot on my new DSLR.
Posted the link as a placeholder. It's not yet live; wait about 2-3 hours.

4:18 AM
Well, my biggest fear with running ads is sabotage: somebody intentionally generating an abnormal number of clicks in an attempt to shut down the AdSense account due to excessive invalid activity.
YouTube should be more resistant to this as it's all managed by Google on their end, but sabotage isn't impossible.

meh, who'd want to sabotage you?

YouTube provides analytics data and I should be able to readily see any abnormal click activity on any video and reduce or remove ads if necessary to stop it.

Bob
4:42 AM
o.O
wtf are the clasps on this kind of band called? amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Watch-Double-Bracelet/dp/B00KBOQH8O
I've been looking for it everywhere
just about every metal watch band has a 'deployment clasp'. I hate those.
But these clasps seem to be associated with mesh bands...

To protect against clickbombing, I'll be checking my AdSense account state at the same level as I check Stack Exchange content.

1 hour later…
5:52 AM
ugh. Can a normal user edit his deleted question?

6:12 AM
eh. work quietens down a lot in the afternoon.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek if they can find it. It's not listed

guys any of you are any good with PF rules?

ask. Don't ask to ask. At worst we'll bite point you at the main site ;p

6:31 AM
@Bob: ahh, user knows about it.
I've been 10K+ long enough that I don't remember :/

1 hour later…
Bob
7:46 AM
ohhhhhhhh "sliding clasp"
fml

Hello to all! Who are you? :D

Bob
'cept at this point I have adblock permanently enabled on yt. if I hear about that joker's lamborghini just one more time...

@PaulVargas: DO I HAVE ANY IDEA WHO YOU ARE?
@Bob: Did you hear about that joker's lamborghini?

Bob
... -_-

7:53 AM
No? Neither did I!
I think I got ipv6 on the VM, yay.
Can't test it properlike till I get home tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ping6 ipv6.google.com

Yeah, did that.

Bob
wget -O- ipv6.google.com

I do also need to play with enabling ipv6 services on the server tho.
Next to try spinning up an ipv6 only server

Bob
I should prolly give my znc server an ipv6 address
but I should probably find a good channel to sit in first :P

7:56 AM
lol.
for some reason my znc server isn't connected over ipv6.

Bob
speaking of which, any suggestions?
hm, looks like I stuffed up the private message buffers

er . Most of the really fun channels I'm on are private as heck ;p

Bob
noted :P
(the two I originally set this up for are more-or-less inactive now)
might hop into the mozilla users channel actually

Yeah, that's a thing. Let me put it this way. I'm here now. I'm not on freenode, or slashnet ;p

Bob
first one I really cared about (steam monster game coordination, actually, which evolved into a semi-active general discussion) was on quakenet

8:11 AM
I think my first IRC channel/server was a local battletech community.
I've followed around another one across 3 servers. Amusingly I found it again after 2 years by accident

8:36 AM
hm. joy. Looks like the ipv6 setup on the main server didn't survive a reboot.

Bob
o.O
@JourneymanGeek How did you set it up?
Some sysctl settings are actually sensitive to init order.
iirc sysctl doesn't play nice with network init

@Bob: according to the instructions. superuser.com/questions/945347/setting-up-ipv6-dhcp-with-duid is my exact setup

Bob
the one I remembered was an issue with bridging: serverfault.com/questions/431590/…
oh, network-manager
runs away

Yeah ;p
Meh. I should be working but its quiet ;p

2 hours later…
10:42 AM
Bah, my graphics card keep making more and more noise.
Maybe I should clean its fans.

Clean it? ;p

A: Some start menu shortcuts are missing on Windows 10

Quinton M.At the current moment the start menu is limited to 500 entries in the database. This also affects search and Cortana as they both rely on that DB. There is currently no known fix other than going to your start menu folder and deleting links and folders to apps not used.

wat?

A hardcoded limit to start menu entries. Why? Why ?

This is the most frustrating part about 10 for me
I have to use Everything to start applications, instead of the start menu

0_0
(I don't think I have more than 500 apps ._.)

10:45 AM
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-StartApps | measure
Count : 601
Is this one of those "500 apps is enough for everyone" decisions?

Presumably.

Bob
o.O
I still haven't moved to 10 yet, but I'm feeling less like it recently.

Open case, fan does not look to dirty.
Run fan speed up to 100%.... and my cat comes over to sniff at the suddenly noisy desktop

hm. Can't be a worn baring?

It only ran for 5 1/2 years at 8-10 hours per day
So yes, I guess it could be

10:55 AM
hm. That's plausible then

Bob
urgh
everything I have uses micro usb for charging... except the pebble
nope, it needs its own magnetic connector

lol
There's a reasonable chance my next phone will be my only USB C device ;p

Almost everything I have used mini-uBS for charging... which is fun if you forget the mini usb cable and go on a business trip.
Took me an hour to find the right cable in the US

Unless I somehow end up on the myrepublic trial
@Hennes: I stash tiny ones everywhere

'no sire, this is a DFATA cable. it is not for charging. And it is stored nowhere near the charging cables

Bob
10:57 AM
hm apparently it charges at ~60mA, so I should be good with a random cheapo cable off ebay
no need to worry about voltage drops
@Hennes mini?
I haven't seen a mini usb connector in half a decade
on a new device, anyway

Phone: miniUSB and mini SD
External keyboard/laserpointer for the cat: mini USB
External HDD caddy : eSATA or mini-USB
...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I might end up actively avoiding c, considering I have somewhere between 20 and 200 micro usb cables o.O

(MR would give me a phone if I use it for ~5 minutes to talk, put facebook photos up etc. Its only in a limited, test area but meh, I can put photos of random crap up ;p
@Bob: Its the future ;p

Bob
@Hennes mini usb phone? mini sd phone?!?!
what phone is this? :S
mini sd... haven't seen in a decade

MDA vario (#1, the classic)

Bob
10:59 AM
at least

Might be a tad old, but still works

Bob
the last mini sd card I saw was for a gameboy flash cart

Also, I carry a charged up powerbank in my backpack. Need to check on it soon ;p

This is from 2005 or 2006. Not sure when I got it
I got that Naomi powerbank. Needs two cables. One to charge itself (USB to microUSB), one to charge the phone or to power the rPi (USB to miniUSB)

Bob
@Hennes huh. 2.5mm audio connector
brings back memories of old nokia phones :P
nokia navigator ~2007

11:02 AM
My work phone (handed in this Monday) still had a 2.5 jack.

Bob
then before that was the funny nokia proprietary connector

And matching headset

Bob
@Hennes naomi? xiaomi?

Yes that

Bob
@Hennes ...but the pi is micro usb
not mini
o.O

11:03 AM
It is? hmm.
Shows how much I used it

Bob
ok, just measured the pebble as charging at 90mA
probably ~100mA
low enough that my power bank actually shuts off :S
well it only has a 130mAh battery
yea, any cable should be able to handle this

Hmm, AMD 5870 benchmarks with 2600....Lets see what is afforable and has at least same performance.

Bob
@Hennes define affordable

100-150 Euro.... between jobs atm.

Bob
@Hennes GTX 560 beats it (benchmarked at ~3000 passmark). costs <$70 second hand if you're lucky
though if you're going nvidia I'd recommend at least a 6xx so you can get the fancy hardware video encoding
dunno which amd model has what
generally, if you're happy with second-hand go 1-2 gens back
if you want new, don't bother getting previous gen unless it's especially cheap
e.g. current-gen gtx 950 beats everything before by a large margin

11:11 AM
My current card is still fast enough.
But I like at least one DVI connector and at least two DP connectors.
And a lower power usage then my current card would be nice

Bob
but blows your budget :P
@Hennes ah, yea, DP you're looking for a more modern card
dunno if 6xx had DP (@JourneymanGeek?)
7xx should
again, I don't know amd so I'm just gonna throw out nvidia models

5870 had 2x DP.. Though I only have one DP monitor atm.
Not interested in getting ancient VGA, and DVI only where needed.
Also, no HDMI needed

Bob
@Hennes the point isn't really raw speed (as you say, fast enough), the point of those special features like hardware accel encoding and decoding is, well, lower power usage and better multitasking

DP seems common enough, even my work laptop from 2009 has two DP out ports on its dock

Bob
e.g. if you ever want to record gameplay videos, you can now encode in realtime without sacrificing gaming performance
@Hennes my 2011 GTX 560 card doesn't have any

11:13 AM
I never (re) encoded anything yet. I doubt I will start with that

Bob
business machines (especially docks expected to have lots of ports) is probably the exception
@Hennes well, if you ever record gameplay you basically have to encode

Dell Dock. E series. 2x DP, 2x DVI (use at most 2).

Bob
raw video takes a ridiculous amount of space
DP is only recently becoming more common on the lower end

A new Gforce 620 (1 or 2GB) is about 60 euro new.

Bob
looks like asus gtx 660 has one dp port: asus.com/Graphics-Cards/GTX660DC22GD5
@Hennes !!no
stay far far away from x20
it's literally worse than the haswell IGP
in fact, I'd say stay from GT in general

11:16 AM
All these nvidia terms mean nothing to me. Nor do current AMD terms.
I will have to look around a bit before I buy

Bob
@Hennes @allquixotic can probably fill you in on recent amd
if power consumption is important, then I think nvidia still leads
but if price is the biggest factor some recent amd cards are damn cheap
R7 260 looks to be around your performance expectations
actually, lower TDP than GTX 660
though somewhat lower performance too
though, GTX 750 beats it in performance and TDP
looks to be a bit more expensive, depending on where you buy it
wait, no, about the same price in the US
GTX 750 is more expensive in Aus (~$20 more than R7 260X) for some reason
@Hennes Yea, GTX 750 might be a good bet depending on local availability: amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Dual-Link-Graphics-01G-P4-2751-KR/dp/…
'bout 100 eur
1x dvi 1x hdmi 1x dp
huh, asus went with 1x hdmi, 2x dvi-d, 1x vga for god knows what reason: amazon.com/GeForce-750Ti-GDDR5-Graphics-GTX750TI-OC-2GD5/dp/…
hm, might want a bit more graphics memory: amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Dual-Link-Graphics-02G-P4-3751-KR/dp/…
oh look msi is worse than asus in terms of ports... amazon.com/MSI-OC-PCI-Express-N750TI-2GD5/dp/B00I6DLIB8/…

Trying tweaker.net atm for cards with at least 1GB GDDR5, at least DP and at least DP version 1.2 (MST)

Bob
@Hennes Between GTX 750 and R7 260, I'd recommend the nvidia (similar price, nvidia better perf and power consump). But they're pretty close. And of course you could pick other options, but this is probably the better stuff in that price range
unless you go second hand

One of the 750 I just bookmarked

Bob
750 Ti... even better :P
R7 260X passmark benchmarks below normal GTX 750
but only a little, within margin of error/game-optimisation

11:31 AM
Most of my games are a few years old. As in, I wait until they are 80% off on steam
Any semi recent graphics card can problably handle all of them
hmm, fan speed minimal 42% and audible....

crl
@Jet I cleaned it, and put a window7 on it, did a full memory check and it says it's fine, good news
Guys how do you get the size of a folder from command line (in windows)? (I'm on a boot usb command line)

12:00 PM
I tend to consider the Gforce x60s a great option on the midrange.
Pity you arn't local @Hennes. I have a spare I wouldn't mind parting for a reasonable price ;p
And yeah, the 660 had one, one HDMI and 2 DVI

Bob
@JourneymanGeek depends a lot on the card manufacturer
evga seems to like putting in dp ports
asus and msi don't

Oh, mine did. Was an asus.
Current card's a zotac
Funny thing is I forgot where I buried the old card ._.

12:23 PM
/me prefers Sapphire
:P

I'll am just reading up on tons of stuff like Maxwel -> Kepler (slightly faster, way less power)
Etc etc
If I game it will be on a 2560x1440 screen, so I guess memory bandwidth is relative important
Also, where did the sun go? I read a bit, take a shower and succenly it is dark outside (at 14:30 local)

:O
the end of days!

Ah, first drops of rain.

or that I guess :/

Though I rather liked the end of days when I considered Nvidia
All my old cards have been Matrox and ATI
I had some nividia's but those never worked, crashed, etc etc

Bob
12:36 PM
@Hennes Could just set the res lower if you game fullscreen.

Aye. And bandwitdh seems higher than before, even with the small 128 memory interface

@Hennes Linux here, nvidia is still pretty much spawn of the devil when it comes to open source properness.

Aye.

It's getting really warm here

Same for FreeBSD ofc.

12:39 PM
Which is odd, this room is meant to be cooled as a mission crit room
Normally it's freezing.....

12:50 PM
A 660 would happily handle 2560x1440 in most cases

1:42 PM
@Bob THEY SUCK!
The Fury X2 might beat the 980 Ti in raw FPS in benchmarks, but that remains to be seen, and somehow I doubt it will. Outside of that, AMD is grossly inefficient, overpriced, and underpowered.
And their drivers are back to being buggy, unstable and eager as all hell to TDR over and over and over.
also, if the Fury X2 beats the 980 Ti, it'll end up costing around twice as much for the privilege of doing so.

;p
@allquixotic: and that's only in DX12. Kinda curious what nvidia's response to that would be tho.

@JourneymanGeek a dual-GPU Titan X, maybe?
not sure if that's possible without stacked HBM though - might not be able to make it all fit on one board
and Nvidia doesn't have HBM for this generation

Oh, I mean the general trend of the performance difference being smaller.

1:57 PM
I'm really tempted to hold out for one more generation, because I think the next generation is going to be an absolutely huge performance breakthrough (die shrink)
might lowball a GTX 980 for now, then sell it next year when Pascal comes out

lol
I was VERY seriously considering it

a GTX 980 would be faster than one of my R9 280X cards, and since most games I play are either windowed mode or too buggy to play on crossfire, it would be a significant upgrade

(of course, my original plan was pascal + skylake. I'm putting off a GPU cpu upgrade for a few more years)
and of course, thanks to the nature of my job, I'll be lowballing laptops ;p

I'm getting a cash infusion this fall so I might be able to afford Skylake if I go cheap on the GPU

ahh. My ivy bridge desktop is holding up ok

2:00 PM
I really want a 2 TB 850 Pro, though, and that's a grand

I want to wait for DDR4 to go mainstream and common before a major system upgrade
lol. ~250 gb is still the sweetspot for me

and I'm not going to upgrade my phone because fuck Samsung for having the gall to produce a Note 5 that is not water-resistant, does not have a removable battery, and does not have a microSD card slot... I really feel like punishing them for that decision

lol
I'm not sure what my next phone will be yet :/

I wish Microsoft would hurry up and make ReFS a bootable system partition filesystem, and available as such on client OSes
two 850 Pro 2 TB in RAID-0 with ReFS... O_O

lol
(The best thing about my 850 pro is... my 840 is in my x220, and the hard drive in that is in my dad's old r61. EVERYTHING IS FASTER)

Bob
2:04 PM
@allquixotic ...well, that's one way to sum up

Well, the furies are kinda transitional
they're on the high end, testing seriously new ideas.

Bob
@allquixotic Can I buy it? :P
(kidding, kidding... mostly. even second-hand 980 would break my budget)
I don't value top-end video cards enough to sink $800 into one.

@Bob the 980 is a $500 card in the US, and by the time Pascal comes out it won't even be worth that much, especially used

Bob
@allquixotic ~$730 here, which is about right taking into account exchange rate and GST

2:06 PM
ouch

Bob
Actually, that's mostly exchange rate. It's even cheaper after considering GST.

@Bob: and dropbear tax.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's part of GST
@allquixotic AUD exchange rate is now shit :P

yeah, since I have that $178 credit on my corporate discount site, I can get the $650 980 Ti for about $500 (tax drives it up to about $690)

Bob
I can stop complaining about the price differences now.
oh wow it hit 0.7
when'd that happen

2:07 PM
but if I scrimp on the GPU and go for the 980 -- which, by all accounts, should be great for 2015-2016 games at 1080p60 -- that leaves more money for Skylake

Bob
@allquixotic Not going for the 16 TB?

what do you need 16TB for?

@Bob 16 TB SSD?
that's a thing?

Bob
@CurtisJ.Malainey Linux ISOs? :P
2

I think I paid the equivilent of 760 USD for my 980TI
Wasn't a reference model tho

2:09 PM
Could make best multiboot ever

@CurtisJ.Malainey I record a lot of gameplay videos. That said, 16 TB is way more than I need. My current 8 TB array is more than sufficient in terms of capacity.

I have a 4TB media storage array and im not even at half on it

I have a 3tb hard drive I ought to clean up a little
most of my media sits on a 1tb drive tho ;p

Bob
@allquixotic I think I'm up to over 20 TB of total storage capacity
At least half of that is used by backups and redundant data.

2:11 PM
between all my machines i think im close to 10TB

(A storage server's one of those things I've been planning on for years but never quite get around to building)

Bob
That said, I'd steer well clear of such a large SSD, even disregarding cost.

I have 4 x 4 TB disks in my primary desktop, then a few smaller capacity backup drives sitting in a drawer

Bob
It doesn't sound like the most reliable device.

I have a VM host server then share storage from one of the vms

2:12 PM
Work has close to a petabyte ;p
maybe more

Bob
They go on and on about how packing more NAND into a smaller space is such a great thing, while glossing over how badly that affects data retention.
Smaller gates = less reliable NAND.

@Bob: I think its also a thicker server form factor 2.5 inch drive

@Bob and price. :P

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm mostly talking about the 256-Gbit dies. We've seen the issues with 840 EVOs.

2:14 PM
@CurtisJ.Malainey yup, old news around here... and most of us are very cynical that anyone here will be able to get our hands on it before 2020 due to cost and rarity
organizations like the NSA and DoE will be buying them all up

Bob
Normally, I'm all for advancement. But this is putting people's data at risk, without warning them, and touting how it's more reliable than HDDs - implying it won't fail.

@Bob: It may also be that they're stacking MORE dies into the paxkage

Bob
Then we get people asking questions on data recovery.
I hate questions on data recovery.

Bob
Because the only real answer is "you're screwed. take backups next time."

2:14 PM
I love those

I look forward to it though. And yea i figured it would be old

and heh
redundant backups of GTFO ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek nah, it specifically mentions doubling capacity per-die

I tell CrashPlan to start uploading everything when I go to bed.

Bob
which will also make its way into consumer drives, presumably

2:16 PM
superuser.com/questions/966839/minimal-desktop-to-centos-7 cries I remember when 128mb was 'low memory'

Bob
@allquixotic if I did that it might finish some 5 years worth of bedtimes later

thank god for LTE's mostly symmetrical uplink

@allquixotic: My backups start when I go to work, and incidentally put my computer to sleep afterwards ;p

internet makes me sad
I just wasted an hour speaking to someone who thinks that bible is a theory

Argueing with an idiot is like mudwrestling with a pig....
You'll get muddy and the pig may enjoy it.
or was that engineer. I forget.

Bob
2:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek Playing chess with a pigeon? :P

> <@Gachr> I quote my science teacher, wonderful Michelle: "Theory can be only proven wrong".
> <@Gachr> But yeah, near the end of the world (which we might observe now) everyone has a number, and that destroys the freedom.
> <@Gachr> teresko: Bible's theory of creation of the world. I'm being objective here and not saying that it's a fact.

@Bob: Better than playing poker with a cheetah.

@JourneymanGeek oh snap :D
@JourneymanGeek or Counter Strike with a fox... oh wait

Do not ever ask the fox what he said.

well Cavil's up now so he can totally respond accordingly

Bob

what game is ill-suited for playing with a crafty wauzer?

lol
I have no idea ;p
(we end up playing "catch me if you can" when its pilling time)

playing Star Trek: Starfleet Battles with a dinosaur?
(had to, jokerdino came in)

2:53 PM
;p
(at the moment trying to play MGS V. And biting people's ankles. I mean sneaking up and knocking them down)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek There's apparently at least one really weird scene/concept in there.
But I don't say anything to spoil it for you yet :P

Bob
(I haven't played, but it's come up elsewhere...)

I was playing through the first proper mission where I need to save miller

Bob
Let's just say it starts off looking like fanservice and gets... weird. Don't play with parents around :P

2:57 PM
but mom kept distracting me, so prolly will continue over the weekend
I don't generally care about spoilers XD

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh? Should I link the video? :P

Bob
@JourneymanGeek youtube.com/watch?v=3qvJx0p2eu4 (NSFW - as before, fanservice involved but no nudity - MGSV gameplay video w/ spoiler)
