12:27 AM
anyone happen to be here?

12:39 AM
maybe?

i have a real nice problem here. Windows goes black screen right before login. Only way to boot up is Safe Mode. Plain safe mode is the only one that actually boots, everything else shows black screen

@DemCodeLines Restore or Rebuild.

some new driver added? if it works in safe, you can slowly add stuff back. autoruns might be way to much stuff to deal with but %windir%\system32\msconfig.exe would be a more simple way to disable startup stuff, and enable it slowly.

Bob
1:39 AM
@allquixotic The S6 battery is smaller too
Smaller battery + QHD = no. just no.

2:00 AM
I wonder what the most expedient way to deal with the 1K close vote Que that Super User has would be.??

@KD8NXH Get high and go to town on it?

@MichaelFrank What if I dont have the needed 3K rep?

@KD8NXH Then you don't need to worry about it yet. ;)

@KD8NXH: There isn't ;p

@MichaelFrank What if I care about Super User and want to help keep it clean?

2:13 AM
@KD8NXH Then you earn the rep to be able to reliably make those decisions.

@MichaelFrank Not because I wish to spam the site, but I personaly think that with the amount of close vote reviews that there are, the 3K rep should be lowered to something like 500 or 1K rep.

I'm sure @JourneymanGeek can explain why you need 3K rep.

@JourneymanGeek Why do I need 3K rep to help with Close votes?

Its so you have a good idea of how it works.
As a mod I have unlimited closevotes, and I've tried chipping at it a few times.

Bob
Because we have enough 3k+ close-voters who apparently don't know any of the site rules.
Lowering the limit will only make that worse.

2:23 AM
@Bob @JourneymanGeek That is really sad, Because personaly I think that I understand SE and Super User well enough to be able to make those decisions. I just don't have the time to be able to get myself 3K rep.

Bob
You, maybe. But what about the majority?

@Bob and no way to do the ZeroLemon battery because you can't fucking replace it. ugh.

@allquixotic ZeroLemon?

@KD8NXH 3k isn't that hard

@JourneymanGeek Yea, It's only taken me like 4 years to get to 2K. ;D

2:29 AM
@MichaelFrank Agreed!

@MichaelFrank: True

I lied, it's actually only been 2 years.
...and 10 months.

And I don't have that much on SF (where I've not been on long). I did get that amount on SR in a year ;p

@JourneymanGeek SR?

I've had to cut back tho, work, and this week I literally have zero free time outside sleeping.
Software Recs

2:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek OK... SR is in Private Beta right?

Nope. Public/open beta.
I think we have a decent chance of graduating too.

I haven't been on SR for a while...

augh, my knee is fucked today.
I got home and spent half an hour scrubbing dog piss out of a carpet.

our dog is pretty good about that these days.

Oh, my brother was late from work, and he's home alone all day. He generally holds it in till he can go do it on grass.
Not his fault, his schedules are messed up cause my parents took a vacation, and couldn't find daycare for him that fit our work schedules.
I park/feed him before I leave for work at 9, my brother's supposed to park him and feed him at 6-6.30

2:43 AM
@Bob beautiful gravatar

@allquixotic ._.
That's a pretty big battery.
0_0

3:05 AM
That bird isn't happy. lol

3:23 AM
The battery is fixed on the Galaxy S6, not great.
A powered case could help by reducing the number of cycles the phone's own battery gets, though.
At least Lollipop is more efficient than Jelly Bean...

@DragonLord Lollipop is super buggy on my Nexus 5. :(

3:45 AM
LOL
Nexus 6 logo coming off
In all seriousness, this is not okay and it indicates bad workmanship.
I would be upset if the branding on some electronic product I own came off like that
Shoddy workmanship, that's what this is.

Bob
4:27 AM
@allquixotic Thanks :D
@DragonLord The bigger issue, as discussed above, is the lack of SD support

4:41 AM
@Bob: I'd almost say its not that bad, but I end up clearing up my google music cache everytime I have a big set of app updates ;p

5:02 AM
I just turned this old question into :
4
Q: My keyboard is typing by itself, could there be a ghost in it?

DragonLordThe keyboard on my laptop seems to be typing by itself: It sometimes types characters like 134, whether by itself or when I hit certain keys. Repeating characters may appear unexpectedly. The system volume may change by itself, or windows like the Print dialog or Web browser may appear. This ...

There's plenty of duplicates of this out there.

5:21 AM
Anyone with at least 3000 reputation should close these questions as appropriate.

Just VTC and let the close queue handle them?
They did get seriously pruned down.

Q: Help us close duplicates of two new Community FAQ questions

DragonLordI've recently added two questions to the Community FAQ because they were found to have many duplicates: USB flash drive not working or is appearing as an empty disk drive, Disk Management reports "No Media" with 0 bytes size My keyboard is typing by itself, could there be a ghost in it? Pleas...

A call to action.

5:58 AM
cough
I should probably not bother to respond then XD
"Yea, but maybe asking a meta question may work better?" Might be an appropriate response. Also, I did mention before, pinging me for non time critical things is uncool, since I have a system on most of the time, but I may not be free for moderation tasks... and my phone vibrates when I am atted on SU.

Feb 3 at 14:38, by Journeyman Geek
In your shoes, I'd throw them a closevote first post on meta, and let the community handle it ;p

oh
meh, my bad
wait
See the second line XD

I'll try not to do that again (as in pinging a moderator directly)
This is something best handled on Meta.

6:15 AM
Yeah.
or through the newly pruned close queue

1 hour later…
7:24 AM
Damn it. So sleepy ><
And I went to sleep early, woke up not much earlier than usual and I'm all grrrrrrzzzzz

8:16 AM
Never heard of SD cards heating up

Bob
@JourneymanGeek always happens with benchmarking
I've had it happen just copying photos off the camera card

8:53 AM
@Bob: tho, it is a cheap shitty machine, and they might have cheaped out on cooling.

Bob
9:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek Have you ever seen a cooled SD slot?

@Bob: I mean the machine as a whole ;p
But clearly that's the next big thing. Water cooled SD card slots.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That has nothing to do with an overheating SD card, though

@Bob: The entire machine could be overheating. and dumping all that heat through the SD card and such ;p

Bob
...wut

9:58 AM
Just a guess? ;p
Maybe the *entire system* is running hot?

10:27 AM
We finally got our own branded RFID cards. Yay :D

Bob
11:02 AM

11:21 AM
@Bob Those .com bastards >:(
But we have fair-manager.com ;P

Ugh, I'm working on such a nasty bug right now. It happened all the time last night. Then I tried to repro here at work, copied dev database from dev server to local, reproduced the issue right away. Then I added a log statement to get a better idea of what leads to the bug, now it's gone. Can't repro anymore no matter what I try
And the worst part is, the issue is related to our meeting management module. So to repro, I have to schedule and re-schedule a ton of events, all of which send meeting invitations to my inbox. So all of the phones on my desk go nuts, Outlook goes nuts and, as a result, I go nuts O____o

11:41 AM
Mm nuts

12:14 PM
I may have just fixed it
Jeeze, wtf, SourceTree doesn't detect that there are updated versions of the software available when the installed version is too old...
I mean, is it just me or is that kind of the whole idea with having an updater in your application?
And I reported that issue in Sep 2014 :\
Either I'm dealing with tons of seriously broken software recently or I simply attract these failures

1 hour later…
1:22 PM
Whoa
UE4 is free to use now unrealengine.com/blog/ue4-is-free

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Doesn't the latter imply the former?

@Bob Maybe, I still believe that the software is simply broken and it's someone else's fault

to (early) bed with me. Hopefully I won't be so tired and worn out tommorrow.

@DragonLord Nice, customized laptops going mainstream will be nice ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 'night!

2:32 PM
@Bob Nice idea

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Think we should hold one? :P
Hm. Actually... any word on if there's going to be a Win10 competition? :P

@Bob Worth a shot

Bob
Unfortunately, it's not as drastic a change as Win8, so not as many questions...

@Bob None that I'm aware of

3:08 PM
@Bob looks ... bland ;p

1 hour later…
4:37 PM
ugh

Bob
@allquixotic ?

@Bob I've been invited to a wedding I really don't want to go to, but I'm going anyway

Bob
o.O

4:53 PM
it's just an expense and a waste of time imo

5:11 PM
Hi folks.
Sorry to request your help in a somewhat emergency.
My sister copied a big bunch of pictures from her smartphone to her PC. After performing some undo functions, the pictures no longer exist. Is there anyway to recover them photos?
Yeah no, she also deleted the photos from the smartphone.
I'll try to list the events she did in order.
1. Created a new folder and named it 'something'.
2. Copied photos from the phone and pasted it wrongly in the master folder of the newly created 'something' folder.
3. Deleted the photos in the master folder and copied it again to the 'something' folder.
4. Deleted the photos in the phone.
5. Presses Undo option (a bunch of times) and the folder is back to its classic 'new folder' name and the photos are gone missing.

@jokerdino TURN OFF HER COMPUTER NOW
power it down immediately

Bob
@allquixotic s/TURN OFF/UNPLUG/

pls?

Bob
Don't even try for a "safe" shutdown

hold down the power button or unplug it

Bob
5:19 PM
Prevent all further writes to that disk

well, she did a bunch of recovery software stuff

Bob
@allquixotic just unplug it; holding the button can initiate a hibernate or shutdown
@jokerdino welp, it's toast

@Bob probably partially toast
depends on the amount of free space

Bob
and luck

Is it possible to recover photos from the phone side?
it has mtp / ptp

5:20 PM
@jokerdino much harder

Bob
@jokerdino nope. You need mass storage, at the very least
mtp/ptp is far too high-level

Goddamn, if I dont recover it, I starve for the night.

you could probably still get them off the disk if you have powered it down now like I said, unless you have very little free space

Bob
if you can mount it as mass-storage, you might be able to dd it and recover from the image

the computer has a ton of free space.

5:21 PM
then power it down and stop talking! :P

Bob
@jokerdino there's a reason they pop up a warning when you undo, y'know

and what else are we doing?
after the power down

Bob
@jokerdino UNPLUG IT RIGHT NOW
WORRY ABOUT THAT LATER

once it's powered down, boot up a linux live cd and try an ntfs recovery program

She says nothing popped up when undoing

5:21 PM
are you typing on her system?!

nope

Bob
every second you leave it, the chance of meaningful data being overwritten increases
2

thank god

this is mine

Bob
@allquixotic s/try an ntfs recovery program/take a disk image/

5:22 PM
@Bob ^ this.

how do I make an image?

Bob
just rip out the power cable
you don't want the system shutting down and writing to the disk

yeah, she has done it now.

Bob
next, boot into a livecd

ok let me get my live USB

Bob
5:23 PM
how big is the drive?
do you have enough free space to create a full clone?
you need an alternative destination to recover to, at the very least

more than 200GB she says
i have a portable 1TB drive I can clone it to

Bob
normally, I recommend creating a full disk image; it's the safest option
if you can't, then you can try mounting the disk as read-only (this is also faster if you're actually pressed for time)

Do you think I can clone it to my unpartitioned 1 TB hard drive?
I dont think we are pressed for time. Just the files <3

Bob
@jokerdino better to format the drive and clone to an image file. but if you want it done faster, mounting read-only and chucking an undelete utility (followed by testdisk/photorec) at it should be safe-ish, since the hardware isn't failing

OK now, I boot it on my LiveUsb and then clone it using which software?

Bob
5:26 PM
actually, this is pretty much a textbook case for photorec :P
though I don't know how that deals with fragmentation, so if you can get an undelete utility working then that might be better
I'd try the latter first; it's faster since it doesn't have to scan everything
@jokerdino identify which drive (partition, really) it's on

Its on the C drive

Bob
...in Linux

oh yeah
let me boot first

Bob
dd if=/dev/sdX of=/path/to/your/external/drive/myimage.img bs=2M conv=noerror,sync
something like that (@allquixotic?)

now I have to figure how to boot from the liveUsb. :S

Bob

@Bob looks good

we got some problem.
I cant mount the windows from linux side. It claims windows is not in a safe mode

Backup question. If I use differential backup of 111GB whole SSD on a partition level, how is it my backup size is 334GB?

you aren't mounting windows from the linux side

windows 8.1 is in a bitch mode

5:31 PM
...at all

Bob
don't mount the internal drive

Bob
the whole point of taking an image is to preserve the current state

good :)

Bob
the NTFS partition will be in a dirty state because you pulled the plug

5:32 PM
so i just take an image of it.

Bob
Windows will automatically fix that up on next boot

do i need to sudo the dd?

Bob
probably
normally if I'm running from a live cd/usb I'm already running as root :\

ok.
after taking the image, what should I be looking at?

Bob
4 mins ago, by Bob
then chuck testdisk at it => http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Undelete_files_from_NTFS_with_TestDisk
really, you don't need an image for this particular operation
it's just become habit at this point to always take one
testdisk shouldn't be modifying the source

5:36 PM
I cant seem to find the address to my hard drive :/

Bob
...you need to mount it first
and yes, that does mean formatting it first
don't format the internal drive!

the only interaction you should be having with the internal drive is passing it as the if= parameter to dd
and I mean the only
you need to mount the external drive

my external is not being recognised
wtf
hold on. i am going to have to format my external?

Bob
to store the image on it? yes.
you also need space to store the extracted data

what if I have a fedora installed in it
and some critical data

Bob
5:41 PM
16 mins ago, by jokerdino
Do you think I can clone it to my unpartitioned 1 TB hard drive?
"unpartitioned" normally implies unformatted

oh yeah

Bob
if it already has a filesystem on it, and that filesystem supports files > 4 GB, then just mount and use that fs

hit me hard on mu head

@jokerdino if you have enough disk space free on the external to contain the entire internal disk, you can make it an image (as a file) on your existing drive
no need to lose any data

@allquixotic you said I need to format it

Bob
5:42 PM
though, as I mentioned a couple times, you can use testdisk directly on the internal hdd if you want
it's not that risky in this case

@jokerdino it's your choice
you have 2 options

Bob
@jokerdino that was with the assumption that it was unformatted based on your earlier statement

....3 options

i have my sister's laptop running on liveusb

option 1: dd if=/dev/internaldisk of=/mnt/yourmountedexternal/somefile.img will not lose any data on external
option 2: dd if=/dev/internaldisk of=/dev/yourunmountedexternal WILL LOSE DATA ON EXTERNAL
option 3: don't dd at all, just use photorec/testdisk directly on /dev/internaldisk
not literally internaldisk; I mean whatever the device name is

5:44 PM
wasn't there some parameters on option 1?

@jokerdino yeah, don't take it literally, I'm giving you the outline

i am going to take an image and run photorec on the image right?
am going with option 1 :O

how big is the internal drive?

thank you guys for your help.
its not bigger than the free space in my external

then you should be fine

5:46 PM
whoo

just mkdir /mnt/external; mount /dev/sdc2 /mnt/external to mount the largest partition of your external drive, replacing sdc2 with the appropriate partition number

Bob
13 mins ago, by Bob
4 mins ago, by Bob
then chuck testdisk at it => http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Undelete_files_from_NTFS_with_TestDisk
run testdisk first
if it doesn't work, run photorec
testdisk parses the NTFS metadata and should be able to recover whatever is still available
photorec is really only useful over testdisk when the metadata is completely stuffed; since it treats the disk as one giant stream, it will not recover fragmented files correctly

i cant detect my external in my sister's laptop
guess, its option 3 then

Bob
@jokerdino you still need a recovery destination!

@jokerdino how are you determining this?
try gparted

5:55 PM
@allquixotic I plug in and plug out. Nothing shows in Disks

@jokerdino what distro is this liveusb?
and version

fedora 20

don't rely on Disks
try gparted

Q: HP Switches in a ring

Steve TaylorIm struggling to find an answer to limitations of spanning tree in a ring network. We have a network covering a large area that is in a ring format, Each node is fibre in and out and possibly one device on each switch. They cannot be cabled back to a single point as this covers such a large area...

wow, ring networking in 2015?
I thought packet switched networks made that obsolete

5:59 PM
@allquixotic parted doesnt print my external
no difference between plugged in and plugged out

@allquixotic It's TCP/IP, only that packets need to be routed through a ring network.

@jokerdino what does dmesg | tail -f print when you plug it in? (start in a plugged out state, then dmesg | tail -f, then plug it in)
@DragonLord hmm... odd... guess I'm too used to hub and spoke topology...
mesh networks also have the same problem as that ring network, where you have a bunch of intermediate nodes that each become a SPOF

Bob
@allquixotic a mesh theoretically has more alternative paths
but the processing latency could be problematic

@Bob in practice though, most mesh networks are pretty thin, especially in "the middle" between end clients and the central routing infrastructure
e.g. wifi mesh networks in Africa

Bob
ya

6:12 PM
I think traceroute is the answer
Wireshark can be useful for deeper analysis
I've personally used Wireshark to diagnose network issues before.
PCWorld has more on using Wireshark as a diagnostic here

@allquixotic thanks for the pointer. I got messages like 'couldnt allocate port 1 usb_device' and stuff.

did you try another port?

on further digging, I realise it could be outdated kernel in fedora 20.

I didnt try all 3 of the ports.

6:23 PM
try fedora 21? ;p

and my sister just kicked me out of her room.

currently running fedora 21 and loving it on my laptop in a vm

Is Fedora 21 out of beta yet? -- OK It's out.
Gonna have to download it and prep a live media.
Do you have any idea how this could have happened?
Does undo function overwrites earlier paste action?

@Sathya hahaha

now you know why our questions are so crappy.

A: HP Switches in a ring

DragonLordThe primary limiting factor is the number of nodes each packet must go through. In any network, each TCP/IP packet must go through a series of hosts. The packet header contains a value called time to live (TTL), which limits the maximum number of nodes each packet may go through. The initial TT...

Q: Is it possible to include switches in traceroute hops?

dannymccI was wondering if it's at all possible to make a Dell Powerconnect 2848 switch show when running internal traceroutes. This would help with diagnosing issues and make it far easier to see where issues occur. According to the datasheet, this particular switch is Layer 2 and 3 aware. I'm not comp...

Seems I'm wrong. I actually know very little about networking...

Q: Safe aerosols for de-stinking laptop

WutnautI'm refurbishing some laptops that came from a hospice and they smell absolutely terrible. I'm very confident the stench is coming from inside the computer itself. I have no problem opening them up and cleaning them out, but the stench remains. What is a safe scent-spray or technique I could use...

What's with the trend towards hard games? Am I missing out because I'm not skilled enough?
I'm aware games like Dark Souls are not for everyone (just look at the retail return rates for the Souls series)

@DragonLord confusion say: One who play games for living, seek new challenges (reviewers). One who reviews displays to the world thier experience. They that review set the trend , even though, one with job pay the way.
What amazed me way back when , they made a good but easy to control and play game, it would reach the top of the charts, but was rejected by "gamers" and "reviewers" as being lame panty waiste game.

9:11 PM
There needs to be a "Your answer is shit." option when recommending deletion in the low quality review queue.

@MichaelFrank they rejected my flag for that , indicating that is what the downvoting is for, not to be flag as improper for the site, just wrong.

@Psycogeek Then give me a downvote option on the review screen. ;/

well you know you can link right into the whole thing. being paranoid that any review is some sort of evil machine audit test i often do "open in new tab" to see what i am dealing with.

For example:
0
A: Merging two incoming broadband lines for faster internet

JoeLook at FatPipe and see if this is what you want

similar to link only answer.

9:17 PM
@Psycogeek But it's not. And the whole idea of using that option is that it will comment from me telling them not to post link only answers.

Low Q answer has severe formatting or CONTENT :-) problems.
but again it could be rejected , because it really does not qualify as a "wake up a moderator at 2am, to beat a user" kind of problem

I'm not flagging, I'm dealing to them in the queue.

9:37 PM
(at least not before I get dressed , this time :-)

9:48 PM
There is a secondary way to address the problem. Comment to the user "This is all well and good , but how would a person go about doing this? did it work for you? can you explain a bit more about your flash recommendation, because as it stands the answer says nothing. if you have something to contribute, then lets read about it."

@Psycogeek Still not doable from the review page. That's my issue.

Q: Changing Desktop Notification sound in Iron/Google Chrome

NoviceLinux-WindowsGeekI am wondering how I would go about changing the Desktop Notification sound in Iron which is based of off of Google Chrome. I have done some Googling but have so far found nothing. I am using Iron V 40.0.2150.0.

any ideas anyone?

11:02 PM
Is it the same as doing it in chrome?
but then, how do you do it in Chrome?

11:17 PM
when normal searching comes up with nothing, try searching with the sound itself described Ding doink bonk boing. superuser.com/questions/811996/…
Any sounds that are complely built into a program (dont know chome) are often found in a dll (library for resources) and can be found with "resource hacker" type tool which can find play and remove and recompile the resource with a changed picture or sound.
